And now let's check in on the pitchers from the WTH 25-man roster. [Note - The What the Heck 25-man roster was compiled through reader votes throughout the off-season.]
Fernando Abad was our lefty reliever. He has since gotten promoted to Houston and is now on the DL. Jason Chowning was promoted from Lexington to Lancaster. Alex Sogard was promoted from Lancaster to Corpus Christi. And Chris Hicks was activated from the DL at Corpus and promoted to Oklahoma City.
Jason Chowning leads the WTH roster with a very impressive 13 SO/9. Chowning and former teammate Dayan Diaz both still sport sub-1.00 ERAs. Chowning and Chris Hicks also have sub-1.000 WHIPs although Hicks' is based on far fewer appearances. And finally, Chowning leads this roster with 10 saves and is tied in number of appearances with Juan Abreu at 20.
Of the starting pitchers, Paul Clemens leads the crew in wins with six. Nick Tropeano leads the WTH Roster in ERA and WHIP. Mike Foltynewicz, who was not voted to be on the WTH Roster, actually has more wins than Clemens with seven and a lower ERA than Tropeano (2.14). Dallas Keuchel leads the crew in innings pitched (75.1).

WTH 25-Man Roster Update - Position Players
It has been far too long since we've checked in with the WTH 25-man roster to see how they're doing. [Note - The What the Heck 25-man roster was compiled through reader votes throughout the off-season.] First the position players ~
Jon Singleton still leads the WTH crew in on-base percentage and slugging percentage, but Austin Wates is now our leader in batting average. George Springer is the WTH RBI leader with 41 while Jon Singleton is a close second with 38. Adam Bailey leads in doubles with 16, George Springer in triples with six, and Springer and Singleton are tied with 11 home runs each. Delino DeShields has the most walks (35) and stolen bases (37), while Springer has the most strikeouts (73). The worst strikeout to walk rate belongs to Jonathan Meyer, the best to Brandon Wikoff with Jordan Scott a close second.
Since we last checked in, Adam Bailey has been promoted from Lancaster to Corpus Christi and Brandon Wikoff was activated from the DL. Chris Wallace spent most of May on the DL as well, and hasn't gotten into a groove at the plate since his return.
Jonathan Villar's batting average has improved vastly since we last checked in on him and he is hitting .279 over his last ten games as well. Roberto Pena is also showing slow but steady improvement in his hitting. Kody Hinze continues to struggle and Chase Davidson has yet to make his season debut.

WTH 25-Man Roster - Position Player Update
As promised, let's check in with the position players from the WTH 25-man roster and see how they're doing. [Note - The What the Heck 25-man roster was compiled through reader votes throughout the off-season.]
100 AB's into the season Jonathan Singleton leads the WTH crew in average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. With a minimum of 100 AB's, only three players in the Astros system have higher averages - Brandon Barnes, Matt Duffy and Fernando Martinez; no one has a higher on-base percentage; and only Brandon Barnes and Telvin Nash have higher slugging percentages.
George Springer leads this group with 23 RBI's. Zach Johnson leads all Astros minor league players with 31 RBI's. No one has more stolen bases than our one-two punch of Delino DeShields and Jonathan Villar.
Jonathan Meyer has continued to hit well after his strong start. Kody Hinze and Roberto Pena have continued to struggle. And Jonathan Villar is showing signs of improvement. I've not seen any word about Brandon Wikoff's DL status so we'll leave him on the roster for now.

WTH 25-Man Roster - Pitching Update
It's been a while since we checked in on the pitchers from the WTH 25-man roster. Let's see how they're doing. [Note - The What the Heck 25-man roster was compiled through reader votes throughout the off-season.]
Note that since Jack Armstrong is out for the season recovering from Tommy John surgery, Jason Chowning will take his place on the roster as the runner up in voting for that position. Jason has had an excellent start and has one of the highest SO/9 in the entire Astros minor league system (behind only Kevin Chapman for pitchers with at least 15 innings).
Our collective staff has slipped a bit since we last checked in on them, but are still performing better than the system average. The WTH pitchers have a 3.59 ERA and a 1.330 WHIP with 8.0 SO/9 (as compared to 4.68 ERA, 1.431 WHIP and 7.8 SO/9 for the system as a whole). Our starting pitchers are 10-11. Jason Chowning and Fernando Abad (minor league numbers only) have yet to give up an earned run. Jason Chowning also leads the staff in saves.
The only other pitcher not on the WTH roster with a 0.00 ERA is Xavier Cedeno. The most impressive starting pitcher missing from our roster is Lexington's Mike Foltynewicz (4-1, 1.60 ERA and 1.220WHIP). The most impressive relief pitchers missing from our roster are Lancaster's Kirk Clark (1-1, 1.74 ERA, 0.968 WHIP, 2 saves in 10 games); Corpus Christi's Jason Stoffel (0-1, 2.13 ERA, 0.868 WHIP, 2 saves in 10 games); and Oklahoma City's Jose Valdez (0-0, 2.84 ERA, 1.105 WHIP, 5 saves in 13 games).
Tomorrow we'll check in on our WTH Roster position players and see how they're doing.

WTH Roster - Position Player Update
Now that we're two weeks into the minor league season, let's check in on the position players from the WTH 25-man roster and see how they've done so far. [Note - The What the Heck 25-man roster was compiled through reader votes throughout the off-season.]
Everyone who thought that, two weeks into the season, Jonathan Meyer (who had a .264/.343/.399 batting line in 2011) would lead this roster of studs in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS, raise your hand. I see one hand there in the back and it appears to belong to Meyer's gammy. With our lack of depth at third base, it's nice to see Meyer showing some encouraging signs although it's obviously too early to read much into his numbers.
The results are a mixed bag with strong starts from Wates, Singleton and Scott and slow starts from Villar, Wallace and Hinze. Santana hasn't been off the DL all that long so his numbers are an extremely small sample size. Other than Meyer, Delino DeShields (who only hit .220 last season) has had the most encouraging start at the plate, plus he already has eight stolen bases to boot. Springer doesn't have flashy numbers, but he does lead this roster in RBI's with 11.
Two players not on the WTH Roster who have had really great starts are Telvin Nash (who really should have been our DH instead of Chase Davidson - no offense intended, Chase) and Brandon Barnes. These two lead all of the minor league players in OPS (minimum of 50 plate appearances) with Telvin Nash having a 1.062 OPS and Brandon Barnes having a 1.046 OPS.
Other Astros minor leaguers with notably good starts at the plate are Zach Johnson, Fernando Martinez, Jose Martinez, Erik Castro and Jake Goebbert.

WTH Roster - Pitching Update
Now that we're two weeks into the minor league season, let's check in on the pitchers from the WTH 25-man roster and see how they've done so far. [Note - The What the Heck 25-man roster was compiled through reader votes throughout the off-season.]
Congratulations! You picked a great pitching staff. The WTH pitchers have a 2.86 ERA and a 1.124 WHIP with 8.3 SO/9; our starting pitchers are 4-1; and Fernando Abad and Dayan Diaz have been perfect in relief. Despite Juan Abreu's continued command issues, he somehow has two saves already. Alex Sogard started out slowly but was terrific in his last two appearances. Unfortunately, Chris Hicks had one terrific outing followed by a terrible outing followed by a trip to the DL.
Other pitchers who are not on the WTH roster who are currently sporting a 0.00 ERA are Sergio Perez, Jose Valdez, Kirk Clark, Jose Cisnero, Jason Chowning and Xavier Cedeno. There are also a total of 16 pitchers on the minor league clubs with a WHIP of 1.200 or under.
Quite a number of pitchers are having very strong starts to the season, but the Oklahoma City staff is really a cut above the rest. Their staff ERA is 2.27 with a WHIP of 1.181. I would love to see that dominance continue.
Tomorrow we'll check in on our WTH Roster position players and see how they're doing.

WTH 25-Man Roster Change
Boy, do I hate this. I've been putting it off, but I'm just going to rip the bandage off and do it. We're going to have to replace the recently released Jordan Comadena on the WTH Roster. I knew that it was likely that we would have to replace a player due to injury or being called-up at some point, so I compiled a list of the runners-up in the voting for that eventuality.
So without further ado, Roberto Pena is now a member of the WTH Roster, and I feel like a total rat fink. Sigh.

WTH 25-Man Roster
After 27 rounds of voting (including a couple of rounds to winnow down our pitching choices) over 27 weeks, the WTH 25-Man Roster is at long last complete. I hope that my readers have enjoyed getting to know the players a little bit better, one position at a time, as much as I have. Now we'll get to see how we did as I track their stats as a group over the season. First, let's see how they did in 2011 ...
First the pitchers (stats include prior organization if applicable) ~
And the position players (also includes stats for prior organization if applicable) ~
As a composite, the pitchers on this team had a .519 win percentage with a 3.68 ERA, 1.260 WHIP, 7.65 SO/9 and 2.53 SO/BB (as compared to a .408 win percentage, 4.87 ERA, 1.490 WHIP, 7.6 SO/9 and 2.03 SO/BB for the 2011 average for the entire organization).
As a composite, the position players on this team batted .282 with an approximate OBP of .361+ and a slugging percentage of .437 (as compared to .258/.334/.379 for the entire organization in 2011).
SOME FINAL THOUGHTS ON THE WTH ROSTER ~
I am encouraged by this roster. Yes, we still lack depth in the Astros farm system, but we do not lack talent. In addition to the players that made the roster, there are many more waiting in the wings. Adrian Houser, Brett Oberholtzer, Kyle Hallock, Vincent Velasquez, Mike Foltynewicz, Tanner Bushue, Telvin Nash and Jio Mier are already on the radar screen. And there others out there on the cusp. Will Luis Ordosgoitti, Tommy Shirley, Ernesto Genoves, Emilio King, Roberto Pena, Mitch Lambson, Matt Duffy and Teoscar Herrnandez be the next wave to prove themselves? And don't forget about Mike Kvasnicka; with his move back to catcher, he could really come into his own this season. With a new front office (and a new philosophy) in place, a first round draft pick coming soon and some very talented players already making progress through the system, I'm excited about the Astros future for the first time in a long time.

WTH 25-Man Roster - Final Infielder
As posted over the weekend, Austin Wates became the 24th player and final outfielder to be named to the WTH Roster. Runners-up were Jacob Goebbert, Teoscar Hernandez, Emilio King and Neiko Johnson. For more on the WTH 25-Man Roster, go here.
Next, let's pick our final infielder. This list is comprised of all those receiving votes in the last rounds of voting for utility infielder and for designated hitter. Your choice for this position will probably depend on what you want in that last infield spot. If you're looking for another utility infielder who can play at multiple positions, Jean Batista is your candidate, having played 2B, 3B and SS. If you're looking for on-base skills, Kody Hinze would be your man. If you're looking for power, Kody Hinze would be your man. If you're looking for someone who can draw a walk, Kody Hinze would be your man. If you're looking for someone who can drive in runs, Kody Hinze would be your man. Are you sensing a theme here? But I don't want to unduly influence your decision. It's totally up to my readers. Really. So ...
With that said, here are the 2011 stats for the players. Look them over and vote.

WTH 25-Man Roster - Final Outfielder
As posted over the weekend, RHP Jack Armstrong became the 23rd player and final relief pitcher to be named to the WTH Roster. Runners-up were Jason Chowning, Jorge de Leon, Mitchell Lambson, Pat Urkfitz, Jason Stoffel, Ebert Rosario, Xavier Cedeno and Josh Zeid. For more on the WTH 25-Man Roster, go here.
Next, let's pick our final outfielder. This list is comprised of all those receiving votes in the last round of voting as runners-up to winner Domingo Santana. My choice for this position would be Austin Wates, hands down. Not only did he have a great, consistent season, but he also played at all three outfield positions. A case could also be made for Emilio King who is rumored to have an outstanding arm (although he has to cut down on the strikeouts) and Jake Goebbert, a left-handed bat with numbers that are very similar to Austin Wates, who has played both left field and right field. And, of course, we shouldn't forget about the up and coming Teoscar Hernandez, a possible five-tool prospect!

As posted over the weekend, the 22nd player added to the WTH 25-Man Roster was Designated Hitter Chase Davidson. Also receiving votes were Telvin Nash, Kody Hinze, Matt Duffy, Jimmy VanOstrand and Tyler Burnett. For more information on the WTH Roster, go here.
This week we're going to pick our 6th and final relief pitcher. This list is compiled of those who received at least one vote in the last round of voting for relief pitchers. Jack Armstrong, with his mid to high-90's fastball, probably has the upper hand in winning this one as he was actually tied for the lead during the last round of voting. But you should probably at least consider Jorge de Leon with the stingiest WHIP and batting average allowed of the group (plus his 16 saves), Jason Chowning with his 2.45 ERA, Jason Stoffel with his 10.69 SO/9 and Mitchell Lambson with his 4.88 SO/BB.

The 22nd player selected for the What the Heck 25-Man Roster was DH Chase Davidson. We had another case of "stuffing the ballot box" with Davidson, but since he was essentially tied with Telvin Nash before the ballot stuffing began, I will let the results stand. However, just like Miss America, if for any reason Chase Davidson can't fulfill his duties, Telvin Nash will be called on to DH for him. Also receiving votes were Kody Hinze, Matt Duffy, Jimmy VanOstrand and Tyler Burnett. (For more information on the WTH 25-Man Roster, go here.)

WTH 25-Man Roster - Designated Hitter
As posted over the weekend, RHP Nick Tropeano became the 21st player and final starting pitcher to be named to the WTH Roster. Runners-up were Adrian Houser, Tanner Bushue, Tommy Shirley, Luis Ordosgoitti and Kyle Hallock. For more on the WTH 25-Man Roster, go here.
Next, let's pick our Designated Hitter (yeah, I hate it too). This list is comprised of those who received votes in earlier rounds of voting for first base and for third base (since those are traditionally power positions) and two players (Rafael Valenzuela and Erik Castro) who were used extensively in the DH position in 2011. The two obvious choices would be Chase Davidson and Kody Hinze. Chase Davidson had 11 home runs and 44 RBI's in 44 games before being derailed by an injury, whereas Kody Hinze was just shy of 100 RBI's and led all Astros minor-leaguers in home runs and was second in doubles in 2011. The edge for me goes to Kody Hinze since he had a far better walk rate than Chase Davidson. But let's not forget about Telvin Nash. It will be interesting to see what this top 10 prospect can achieve in a full season in 2012 after recovering from his 2011 hand surgery (hamate bone).

WTH 25-Man Roster - Final Starting Pitcher
As posted over the weekend, the 20th player added to the WTH 25-Man Roster was OF Domingo Santana. Also receiving votes were Austin Wates, Jacob Goebbert, Emilio King, Neiko Johnson, Teoscar Hernandez, Collin DeLome and Jay Austin. For more information on the WTH Roster, go here.
This week we're going to pick our 5th and Final Starting Pitcher. This list was compiled of those who received votes in the last round of voting. Personally, I would like to have another lefty in the rotation and Kyle Hallock with his 8.90 SO/9, 3.59 SO:BB ratio, 2.63 ERA and 1.216 WHIP would be the most logical candidate. But I also really like Nick Tropeano (10.63 SO/9, 2.36 ERA, 1.181 WHIP); Nick has recently gotten some love from Baseball America and from Jonathan Mayo as he landed on their prospect rankings. But we can't forget about the 19-year olds ~ Adrian Houser with one of the best fastballs in the system and Luis Ordosgoitti with his 10 BB to 49 SO in 2011. Finally, I'm looking forward to seeing what a healthy Vincent Velasquez, Tommy Shirley and Tanner Bushue can do, and I'm expecting improvement from Ross Seaton this year as well.
With all that said, here are the 2011 stats for the players. Look them over and vote.

WTH 25-Man Roster - Outfielder
As posted over the weekend, LHP Alex Sogard became the 19th player and 5th relief pitcher to be named to the WTH Roster. Runners-up were Jack Armstrong, Xavier Cedeno, Jason Chowning, Jorge de Leon, Ebert Rosario, Evan Grills, Murillo Gouvea, Mitchell Lambson, Pat Urkfitz, Jason Stoffel and Josh Zeid. These players will be recycled as candidates as we fill our final relief pitching spot. For more on the WTH 25-Man Roster, go here.
Next, let's pick our 4th Outfielder. This list is comprised of those who received votes in earlier rounds of voting for the three outfield positions, those who have been used in utility infielder/outfielder roles (such as Neiko Johnson), and a couple of utility outfielders who haven't been nominated yet (such as Collin DeLome). My choice for this position would be Austin Wates, hands down. Not only did he have a great, consistent season, he played at all three outfield positions and his right-handed bat would complement the lefty hitting Jordan Scott and Adam Bailey who are already on the WTH Roster. A case could also be made for Emilio King who is rumored to have an outstanding arm (although he has to cut down on the strikeouts) and Jake Goebbert, a left-handed bat with numbers that are very similar to Austin Wates, who has played both left field and right field. And, of course, we shouldn't forget about the up and coming Domingo Santana and Teoscar Hernandez!
