Astros Minor League Recaps

Sacramento 6, Fresno 4

Fresno home runs: None.

The Tacos bullpen faltered late.

Brady Rodgers had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 9 hits, walking 2, and striking out 4. Jordan Jankowski struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 7th. It was a rough 8th inning for Kevin Chapman, as Sacramento scored 3 runs on 4 hits against him to take the lead in the inning. Chapman struck out 2. Jandel Gustave worked around 2 hits to throw a scoreless 9th.

Preston Tucker opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 1st inning. Both teams scored 2 runs in the 5th inning; Fresno's 2 runs came on a pair of RBI doubles from Tucker and Tyler White. Tony Kemp hit an RBI single in the 9th to pull a run back. Tucker (2 2B, 2 RBI, R), Kemp (RBI, 2 R, SB [8]), and Teoscar Hernandez (R) all finished with 2 hits on the evening.

Joe Musgrove will take on Clayton Blackburn in the series finale. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Tulsa 14, Corpus Christi 6

CC home runs: Conrad Gregor (6, solo in 2nd), Jack Mayfield 2 (6, 8 season; solo in 8th, 2-run in 9th)

The Hooks dropped the series as they were buried by another late onslaught from the Drillers. Tulsa led 4-2 after the 5th inning, but they left Corpus in the dust afterwards, finishing the game on a 10-4 run.

In his first Texas League plate appearance, Garrett Stubbs hit an RBI single in the 1st inning to tie the game at 1. Conrad Gregor smacked a solo homer in the 2nd inning. Jack Mayfield led off the bottom of the 8th with a homer, and Gregor later added an RBI double to his ledger. Mayfield struck again in the 9th with a 2-run homer. Gregor and Mayfield both finished with 2 hits, as did Chase McDonald and Danry Vásquez.

Keegan Yuhl pitched 5 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits (solo homer) and struck out 6. Kyle Smith was the first man out of the Corpus Christi bullpen; he allowed 5 runs on 4 hits (3-run homer), walked 3, and struck out 1 in 2 innings. Michael Freeman and Aaron West both pitched an inning; Freeman allowed 3 runs in the 8th; all of them came on a 3-run home run hit by Cody Bellinger. Freeman allowed 3 other hits and struck out 2. West allowed 2 runs on 2 groundouts, a double, and walked 1 in the 9th.

After hosting Springfield and Tulsa, the Hooks will travel to those two cities for a couple of 3-game series. Their first stop is Springfield, and Cy Sneed will start the series opener. First pitch is at 6:30.

Visalia 10, Lancaster 6

L- Brock Dykxhoorn (5-3)

Lancaster home runs: Jason Martin 2 (15; solo in 5th, solo in 6th)

An 8-1 deficit proved to be too much for the JetHawks to overcome.

Johnny Sewald put Lancaster on the board by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the 2nd inning. Jason Martin led off the 5th with a homer, and Lancaster proceeded to add 3 more runs in the inning as Brooks Marlow hit a 2-run double and came around to score on a single from Aaron Mizell. Martin struck again in the 6th with his 2nd solo shot of the game. Martin and Mizell had 2 hits apiece.

Tough night for Brock Dykxhoorn, who felt the brunt of the notorious Lancaster Effect in his 5 innings. He allowed 8 runs on 11 hits (solo and 2-run homers) and struck out 1. Kevin McCanna pitched the final 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2.

Josh James will start game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 6:35 Pacific.

Quad Cities 2, Beloit 1

W- Ralph Garza Jr. (3-3)
L- Rob Huber (1-3)

QC home runs: None.

Beloit scored a run in the top of the 8th to tie the game, but the Banditos immediately un-tied it by scoring in the bottom of the 8th. That run turned out to be the difference.

Osvaldo Duarte doubled to lead off the 4th inning. He advanced to 3rd on a Kyle Tucker infield single and scored the first run of the evening on a single from Pat Porter. Tucker hit a 2-out single in the 8th, and Connor Goedert and Porter eventually joined him on the bases after singling and getting hit by a pitch, respectively. Christian Correa drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk. Little Tuck and Goedert had 2 hits apiece.

Jose Luis Hernandez scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 over 5 shutout innings. David Schmidt and Ralph Garza Jr. both pitched 2 innings; Schmidt faced 2 batters in the 8th, but did not retire either of them; the leadoff man singled and he also hit a batter. Schmidt had an inherited runner charged to him when Skye Bolt hit a sac fly against Garza. He walked 1 and struck out 1. Garza did not allow any runs of his own, although he allowed a single in the 9th inning.

In game 3 of this series, Yoanys Quiala will face Angel Duno. First pitch is at 7:00.

Tri-City 6, State College 5 in 12 innings

L- Max Almonte (0-1)

TC home runs: None.

According to the ValleyCats' game recap, this is the third time in the last four seasons that they've walked off with a victory on July 5. In this walk-off win, the ValleyCats erased a 5-1 deficit with 4 runs in the 9th and won it on a bases-loaded walk in the 12th inning.

Jake Rogers put Tri-City on the board with an RBI single in the 8th. The real fun began in the bottom of the 9th.

Ryne Birk led off with a double, and Daz Cameron and Ronnie Dawson joined him on the bases after hitting a single and getting hit by a pitch, respectively. Stephen Wrenn hit a 2-run single to cut the deficit to 5-3. Randy César laid down a sacrifice bunt, which allowed Dawson and Wrenn to advance a base, and Taylor Jones came through with a 2-run single to tie the game at 5.

Both teams were quiet in the extra innings, but Tri-City's top of the order sparked the winning rally in the bottom of the 12th. Birk reached on an error with 2 outs in the inning, and once again, Daz and Dawson loaded the bases with a walk and a single, respectively, and Wrenn won it by drawing ball four. César finished 2-3 and was the only player in the ValleyCats' lineup with a multi-hit game.

Ryan Hartman allowed 5 hits and struck out 1 over 4 scoreless innings. Dustin Hunt was the first man out of the bullpen, and in 3 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and fanned 1. Chris Cotton struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 8th. Luis Ramirez allowed a run on 2 hits and walked 2 in the 9th inning, and Sean Stutzman threw 3 perfect innings to get the win, striking out 4.

Erasmo Pinales will start the final game of this series. He'll face Bryan Dobzanski at 7:00 Eastern.

Greeneville 10, Kingsport 3

Greeneville home runs: Vicente Sanchez (2, 3-run in 6th), Ray Henderson (1, 2-run in 8th)

The Appy Astros earned the split with a show of force.

Greeneville seized control of this game with 4 runs in the 5th inning. Connor MacDonald led off the inning with a single, and then Ruben Castro and Chaz Pal followed with RBI doubles to give the Appy Astros the lead. Ray Henderson added an RBI single and eventually scored when Tyler Wolfe hit into a fielder's choice. Vicente Sanchez clubbed a 3-run homer in the 6th inning. MacDonald ripped an RBI double in the 7th, and Henderson capped off the big night with a 2-run homer in the 8th, his first as a pro. Wolfe (RBI, R, SB [3]), MacDonald (2B, RBI, R), and Henderson (HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) all finished with 2 hits in the game.

Nathan Thompson allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4 over 2.1 scoreless innings. Tyler Britton was the first man out of the Greeneville bullpen; he went 3 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 4 hits and fanned 4. Bryan Abreu allowed a run on 4 hits and struck out 3 in 1.2 innings, and Devin Raftery allowed 3 hits and struck out 3 over 2 scoreless.

Tonight, the Appy Astros will welcome the Burlington Royals to Pioneer Park for a 3-game series. Abdiel Saldaña will get the start; first pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Nationals 8, GCL Astros 4

GCL home runs: Troy Sieber (1, 2-run in 4th)

The Kissimmee Stros were behind the eight-ball early and could not recover.

Troy Sieber hit his first pro home run, a 2-run shot in the 4th inning. In the 9th, Jonathan Matute ripped an RBI double, and Joan Mauricio added an RBI single. Sieber finished 2-4.

Moreno Polanco got the start, but failed to record an out. He allowed 5 runs (4 earned, 3 inherited runners charged to him). a hit, and walked 2. He also hit 2 batters. Cris Santamaria technically pitched 2 scoreless innings, walking 2, but all 3 runners he inherited from Polanco scored. He plunked a batter with the bases loaded, and then he allowed an RBI groundout, but he committed an error that allowed another run to score. Jorge Alcala allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 5 over 4 scoreless innings, and Hansel Paulino pitched 2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 3.

The Kissimmee Stros will take on the Mets today.

DSL Astros Blue 7, DSL Marlins 1

W- Felipe Tejada (1-0)
L- Miguel De Los Santos (0-2)
S- Carlos Perdomo (2)

Blue home runs: None.

The Blue team stormed out of the gate with a 6-0 lead and tacked on the extra point with a run in the 8th.

An error in the 2nd inning allowed Angel Tejeda and Carlos Canelon to score the first runs of the day. Jose Miguel Hernandez added an RBI single, and Alfredo Angarita smacked an RBI double. Samir Caraballo added a 2-run single in the 3rd inning. Ronny Jimenez drove in the final run of the day with an RBI double in the 8th inning.

Felipe Tejada allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 over 5 shutout innings. Jesus Bernaez allowed a hit and struck out 1 in a scoreless 6th, and Carlos Perdomo allowed an unearned run, walked 2, and fanned 3 in 3 scoreless innings.

DSL Mets2 8, DSL Astros Orange 2

L- Diosward Gonzalez (1-2)
S- Miguel Ramirez (1)

Orange home runs: None.

The Orange team got buried by a 4-run top of the 9th.

Yeuris Ramirez's 2-run triple in the 6th was their only scoring play.

Diosward Gonzalez allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and struck out 1 in 3 innings. Michael Richez walked 3 and fanned 1 over 2 scoreless, and Kilvio Peralta allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3 in 4 innings.

  1. When a home run barely makes it over the wall, do you call that a 'bare minimum home run?' Or do you leave that for solo HRs?
