Update on Adam Bailey
As you may recall, OF Adam Bailey was released by the Astros earlier this week. I have been informed that he was picked up by the Long Island Ducks in the Independent Atlantic League where he'll be playing with former major leaguers Ian Snell and Josh Barfield. We wish Adam only the best as he continues his baseball journey.

Roster Moves
There were another two minor league cuts this morning, OF Adam Bailey and C Ben Heath. These things are never easy, but this one feels a little personal for me. I've never had the opportunity to meet Ben, but I did have the privilege of getting to know Adam just a little. He is a tremendous person - funny, smart and a great friend to his teammates. I wish the best for both players, but a little piece of my heart will be leaving with Adam.
In addition, Brian McTaggart reported that Mike Kvasnicka, a first round pick from 2010, was traded to the Twins for minor league RHP Gonzalo Sanudo.

RF Adam Bailey (25)
Drafted out of the University of Nebraska in the 23rd round in 2010, Bailey spent roughly half the season in Lancaster and half in Corpus Christi with a couple of games at Oklahoma City. His combined batting line was .264/.309/.440 with 26 doubles and ten home runs in 98 games. Bailey was slated to be the DH of the first Corpus Christi playoff game, but instead ended up in the hospital with an emergency appendectomy.

Originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2000, Barmes was obtained in a trade with Colorado in November of 2010 for RHP Felipe Paulino. In one season with the Astros in 2011, he had a batting line of .244/.312/.386 over 123 games. Barmes signed with Pittsburgh as a free agent in November of 2011.

Catching up with Astros OF Adam Bailey
It's been a while since I first interviewed Astros OF Adam Bailey. As a matter of fact, it's been almost a year. But that doesn't mean I haven't been keeping my eye out for him. I wrote this post after watching him play in Corpus last June. Bailey's 2012 season was a bit more up and down than his excellent 2011 season, but he definitely held his own. He was scheduled to DH for the Hooks in the Texas League playoffs when a rather inconvenient bout of appendicitis landed him in the hospital.
I caught up with Adam via email to see how he spent his off-season and what his goals for Spring Training are. This is was he had to say.
"Well I spent my off-season lifting, following the program the Astros gave me ... sometimes haha. I found a nice place in Kansas to hit and throw. I do enjoy the off-season because I get to spend time with Mariah, my girlfriend, and my pets but I do begin to miss the guys and the competing in all aspects of the game. My goals for spring training are usually always the same but this year will be a little different. I am known for having a below average spring training according to me. I am going to prove to myself that I belong in the starting lineup for a team. I am going to try to roll with the punches, try and not get so frustrated when I fail, and above all else I am going to have fun."

Baseball is a Game of Inches
Some sayings become cliches because they're true. Baseball is a game of inches and boxscores don't usually tell us the full story of any game. There is no differentiation between a fabulous diving catch at short and a routine pop up to short when it comes to the boxscore. And a 399' smoked line drive that is caught in front of the 400' sign in centerfield is still an out no matter how well the ball was hit.
That's why I like to watch as many minor league games as I can, either in person as I've been able to do at Lexington and Corpus this season, or on the computer. I even try to listen to some of the Lancaster games out in the California league, but having to get up at 5:00 on many days doesn't really allow me that luxury very often. Watching or listening to a game tells you so much more than simply reading a boxscore can.
Last Friday, I was in Corpus for the beginning of four days of baseball. When I got back to the hotel, I started writing my minor league recaps for the next day. When I pulled up the Corpus Christi boxscore, I was struck by something. RF Adam Bailey was one-for-four with an RBI and an outfield assist. It was a respectable night on paper, but not something you would think about twice.
But that's not what I saw that night. Bailey crushed a ball 399' to dead center right in front of the 400' sign for an out. Inches. Bailey made an acrobatic diving tumbling attempt in right field that had the crowd around me literally gasping. Unfortunately, he didn't come up with the ball. Inches. And Bailey was caught off of third base on a fielder's choice that was actually a foul down the third base line. Keith Bodie argued the call to no avail. Inches.
Adam Bailey is an interesting player. Despite being second in the entire Astros minor league organization in RBIs in 2011, he has largely flown under the radar. But as Corpus Christi Manager Keith Bodie described him to me, "He's a gamer. He's a bulldog out there." That's what I saw.
Two games later, Bailey again crushed a ball 399' to the exact same spot in dead center. This time it was a double. Inches.

SUNDAY'S RESULTS
Oklahoma over Reno 10-9
Mickey Storey got a spot start for Oklahoma City and gave up five runs on five hits and two walks over three innings, but still managed to get seven strikeouts. Juan Abreu, Xavier Cedeno, David Carpenter and Jose Valdez combined to go the rest of the way, with Carpenter getting the win and Valdez getting the save. Xavier Cedeno gave up his first earned run of the season. There was a lot of firepower in this one with home runs from Fernando Martinez, Scott Moore, Brett Wallace and Landon Powell. Every starter except for Mike Hessman and Mickey Storey got at least one hit. J.B. Shuck scored what turned out to be the winning run in the seventh inning on a Brian Bixler double.
Midland over Corpus Christi 9-3
Jose Cisnero (L, 2-5) had yet another tough start, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over four innings. Henry Villar and Alex Sogard kept Corpus in the game, but Midland broke things wide open as Josh Zeid allowed five runs on four hits and a walk in one third of an inning and Erick Abreu had to come in to get the final two outs. Once again, the Hooks were limited to a handful of hits and Jake Goebbert was the only player to get an extra base hit, a double.
High Desert over Lancaster 11-4
David Martinez (L, 1-3) was yet another victim of a rough Sunday for most of the Astros starters. In 4.1 innings pitched, he gave up seven runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out eight. The bullpen in the guise of Jose Trinidad, Pat Urckfitz and Gabriel Garcia allowed another four runs. George Springer and Ben Heath were both 2x4, but it was Adam Bailey that really stood out going 4x4 with a home run and two RBIs.

What went right: Luis Cruz had an absolutely brilliant start and four Legends had multi-hit days.
Luis Cruz got the win to improve to 4-1 as he allowed only three hits over 7.2 innings. Euris Quezada took it the rest of the way, giving up one run over the final 1.1 innings. Jordan Scott, Zach Johnson, Matt Duffy and Drew Muren all had great days at the plate. Johnson got another two RBIs to bring his season total to 46 over 40 games. Delino DeShields was the only player not to get a hit, but he did draw a walk and score.
