Roster Moves
There were another two minor league cuts this morning, OF Adam Bailey and C Ben Heath. These things are never easy, but this one feels a little personal for me. I've never had the opportunity to meet Ben, but I did have the privilege of getting to know Adam just a little. He is a tremendous person - funny, smart and a great friend to his teammates. I wish the best for both players, but a little piece of my heart will be leaving with Adam.

Astros Minor League Depth - Catcher
As Spring Training approaches, I've been looking at the Astros minor league depth, position by position. Today, we look at the catchers in the organization who had the best seasons in 2012.
One thing strikes me immediately when looking at this list -- youth. Except for Ben Heath and Chris Wallace who are each 24 years old, the rest of these players range from 20 to 22.
Tyler Heineman leads the list in his first year with the organization. The 2012 eighth round draft pick also leads this list in batting average and OPS. He was the New York-Penn League batting champion for 2012 as well. But Heineman isn't just a good hitter. He's also a great defensive catcher and had one of the top caught stealing percentages in the Astros minor league system at 41%. M. P. Cokinos would certainly have gotten much more attention for his offensive output had he not been playing alongside Heineman.
Another catcher who has everyone excited since he came into the system as a part of the 10-player Houston-Toronto trade in July is Carlos Perez. Much like Heineman, he looks to be the complete package offensively and defensively and boasted a 47% caught stealing rate at Lancaster (34% overall).
Also relatively new to the organization is Jobduan Morales who came to the Astros organization in the Justin Ruggiano trade with Miami. Morales' bat was valuable enough that he frequently appeared as a DH when he wasn't used behind the dish. That was true of his winter season in Puerto Rico as well.
Max Stassi just came in to the Astros organization this week as a part of the Jed Lowrie/Fernando Rodriguez trade with Oakland. He ranks in the middle of the pack with his on-base skills. It is his power potential that sets him apart from the rest of the group as he hit 18 doubles and 15 home runs on the way to a .468 slugging percentage. In 2012, he had a 24% caught stealing rate.
There are a couple players on this list whose playing time was very limited and many might question their inclusion. Luis Alvarez didn't see a great deal of playing time during the season, but put up some very good numbers. He followed up with an outstanding winter season with the Liga Paralela in Venezuela. That is enough to keep me interested in Alvarez. Pedro Coa was one of the few offensive bright spots on the DSL team in 2012. That, coupled with a 60% caught stealing rate, has me looking forward to seeing what he will do in 2013.
Heath and Rene Garcia were both having good years when injuries shortened their seasons. Roberto Pena was promoted to Lancaster largely due to injuries putting a strain on the catching staff throughout the system. Pena is widely regarded as a premium defensive catcher, but he struggled offensively after the promotion. I think the 20-year old will start to catch up with the more advanced pitching in the coming season if he is given regular playing time.
Chris Wallace had an uneven season offensively, but overall hit extremely well in the second half of the season. What he needs to focus on most, though, are base runners. He only managed a 12% caught stealing rate in 2012.
Ernesto Genoves' offensive output fell off from the prior season, but reports (from Appy Astros) are that he became much more solid defensively. I'm still intrigued by Genoves' potential, but he is going to have to show me that he is capable of getting to the next level developmentally in the coming season.

Happy Birthday - 10/7
RHP Mike Foltynewicz (21)
Folty was drafted in the first round in 2010 out of high school in Illinois. After a somewhat uneven season at Lexington in 2011, he repeated the level and this time he dominated. His 14-4 record with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.362 WHIP in 27 starts (152 innings) led to his being named as the minor league pitcher of the year for the Astros organization as well as the South Atlantic League's most outstanding pitcher. He was also named a mid-season and post-season All-Star for the league.
C Ben Heath (24)
This Virginia native was also drafted in 2010, in the fifth round out of Penn State. He spent the bulk of his season at Lancaster before getting called up to Corpus in late July. He played in only nine games with the Hooks before his season was derailed by injury. His combined batting line was .290/.335/.411. Heath also boasted a 29% caught stealing percentage, his best season thus far in that category.
RHP Yoiner Angulo (21)
Signed as a NDFA out of Columbia, Yoiner only pitched in two games for the DSL Astros at the end of this season, his second in the system. Since he last pitched in May of last season, I am assuming he was coming back from an injury. In two innings, he gave up two hits and one run with no walks and no strikeouts.

LHP Floyd Bluford "Butch" Henry (44)
If my name was Floyd Bluford, I'd go by Butch too! Originally drafted by the Reds in the 15th round in 1987, Henry came to Houston in September 1990 as a part of the Bill Doran trade with the Reds. Two years later, he was drafted from Houston by the Rockies in the 1992 expansion draft. In 28 starts in 1992, he went 6-9 with a 4.02 ERA and a 1.364 WHIP.
Manager Grady Hatton (90)
Hatton managed the Astros in 1966, 1967 and part of 1968, with a record of 164-221.

The Lancaster team must delight in making me try to recap some of these ridiculously high-scoring games without writing a Victorian novel. Here goes. Jorge de Leon (W, 1-5) finally got that elusive first win as he pitched five innings and allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while Zachary Grimmett pitched the final four allowing five runs on eight hits (including two home runs). Rafy Valenzuela (3x4, 2B, 2R) and Ben Heath (2B, HR, 3R) accounted for 10 of the runs as they had five RBIs each; Ben Orloff added another three. Erik Castro (2x4, 2B, 3R), Jonathan Meyer (2x4, 2B, RBI, 2R) and Grant Hogue (2x3, 2-2B, 2R) also had great days at the plate. Lancaster had 12 hits, but they were also helped out with ten walks, two wild pitches, five hit batters and an error from Rancho Cucamonga.
Oklahoma City over Iowa 6-5
Dallas Keuchel gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Sergio Perez was charged with a blown save as he allowed one of Keuchel's runners to score while failing to record an out against his two batters. Enter Enerio del Rosario (W, 1-1) and Jose Valdez (S, 13) to save the day. Mike Hessman literally supplied half of the offense with three solo home runs. [Note: Before you get terribly excited about Hessman, keep in mind that his career minor league average over 17 seasons is .232 and his career major league average over 109 games is .188. He's doing great right now, but he's 34 and should not be taking a lot of playing time away from younger players who are going to be a part of the future.] The other big hitter of the day was Dallas Keuchel who had two hits for the day and is now batting .263.

Corpus Christi managed to get within one run in the top of the eighth only to have the wheels fall off in the bottom of the frame. Starter Jarred Cosart (L, 3-3) pitched well through five innings, but gave up three runs in the sixth for a total of four runs on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts over six innings. The bullpen imploded in the eighth with Alex Sogard and Arcenio Leon allowing four runs between them and sealing the Hooks fate for the night. Jordan Kreke was the owner of the only extra base hit of the game, a double. Jonathan Villar, Jake Goebbert, Ryan McCurdy and Kreke all had multi-hit games.

Unfortunately, the one hit was a solo homer, but I'll take that any time. Carlos Quevedo pitched a perfect ninth to record his first save. Zach Johnson got his 55th RBI of the season on a ground out. The other runs came on a two RBI double by Chan Moon and a single from Delino DeShields. Deshields stole four bases to increase his total to 36.

Rafy Valenzuela and Ben Heath get to share the honors with their 5 RBI days. Valenzuela got his on two singles, a double and a bases loaded one-out force out. Heath got his with a two-run double and a three-run home run. Different approaches, but equally effective!
