Arizona Fall and Winter League Recaps - 10/23
ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE
Mesa at Phoenix tied 7-7 in 11 innings
CF George Springer was 1-for-5 with two strikeouts and DH Jon Singleton went 0-for-4 with a walk and three strikeouts. RHP Nick Tropeano pitched the sixth inning and gave up no hits, no runs, one walk and recorded one strikeout. In five appearances, he has a 2.57 ERA and a 0.714 WHIP. LHP Alex Sogard came in to pitch the seventh inning with a 6-2 lead. A walk, reached on error, single and a blast later, he was charged with a blown save as Marlins prospect Kyle Jensen took him deep. RHP Chia-Jen Lo pitched the 10th inning and gave up no hits, one walk and struck out two.
Today's Game - Scottsdale (6-7) at Mesa (3-9) at 2:35 CST
VENEZUELAN WINTER LEAGUE
I saw this tweet from Gabriel Garcia before I saw the Zulia-Caracas boxscore. Even with my limited Spanish comprehension, I figured this one out.
Zulia over Caracas 8-5
Zulia came back from a 5-1 deficit to score seven runs in the top of the ninth to win ... all runs scoring on two outs. As Garcia tweeted, it is not over until the final out. The beneficiary of this scoring largesse was Astros RHP Arcenio Leon who was awarded the win in relief. He pitched the eighth inning and allowed one hit, no runs and one walk. For Caracas, Brandon Barnes was 0-for-3 with a strikeout and an RBI sac fly.

Minor League Results
Thursday's Result's
DSL Astros 0 DSL Dodgers 1
The low score doesn't necessarily reflect a pitcher's
duel. Juan Hernandez (0-3), the Astros
starting pitcher, allowed 7 hits and a walk in the first 5 innings. A triple followed by a sac' fly sealed the DSL
Astros, and Hernandez's, fate in the 2nd inning.
Cristian Murillo was the only Astro to reach base multiple times
Thursday, he had a double and a walk.
GCL Cardinals 3 GCL Astros 4
The GCL Astros used 6 pitchers yesterday and the third,
Michael Feliz (4 IP), was charged with all three runs. Alan Abreu, who was the fourth Astro on the
bump, picked up the blown save and the win after coming on in the 7th. Jose Solano and Luis De La Rosa both had a
stolen base Thursday and both managed to convert them into trips across the
plate. Darwin Rivera went 2 for 4 with 2
RBIs rasing his average to .383 in 22 games.
Elizabethton Twins 12 Greeneville Astros 1
There's nothing to see here, move along. All joking aside,
it was a rough one at Pioneer Park on Thursday. The Astros had 2 hits all night and the pitching
was on par with that. The Astros also committed
3 errors. Christopher Lee, who came on to pitch in the 7th, gave up 3 runs (2 ER),
walked two, tossed a wild pitch and failed to record any outs. D'Andre Toney got on a couple times (2B, BB)
and scored a run in 4 trips to the plate.
Tri-City ValleyCats 8 Williamsport Crosscutters 1
The ValleyCats victory on Thursday started on the
mound. Brady Rodgers pitched a scoreless
6 and a 1/3, allowing 7 hits. Kenny Long
finished that inning with perfection and Jamaine Cotton kept it scoreless in
his inning of work. The ValleyCats
pitchers didn't issue a walk all day. On
the offensive side, Tri-City was productive as well. Every ValleyCat batter got at least a hit and
6 had multi-hit performances. Most
impressive was Andrew Aplin who had a double, triple and a walk in 5 plate
appearances. Dan Gulbransen also had an
impressive game at the plate Thursday.
Gulbransen hit 2 for 5 with a double and 4 RBIs.
Kannapolis Intimdators 5 Lexington Legends 6 (15)
This turned into a really exciting game of baseball. Lexington was down most the entire game by at
least a run. In the bottom of the 9th
the Legends rallied to tie the game, scoring 4 runs to make it 5-5. They went
on to win after 6 more innings of play. The final 3 pitchers for Lexington
threw a hitless 7 innings to keep Lexington in the game. Gabriel Garcia picked up the win after
pitching the final two frames with a walk and a strikeout. Lexington also had
17 hits on Thursday and nearly a 1/3 of them came from Delino DeShields. DeShields went 5 for 7 at the plate with a
double and a run scored. Jordan Scott
also had a very productive night at the plate, hitting 3 of 6 with a walk and
the game winning single in the 15th inning.
Lancaster JetHawks Visalia Rawhide

Frisco RoughRiders 7 Corpus Christi Hooks 8 (11)
This was another game that got interesting as it went on
Thursday. The Hooks were getting shutout
at home until the 9th inning when Jair Fernandez hit an RBI single. This was followed by Austin Wates tagging a
3-RBI double to tie the game at 4. Both
teams picked up a run in the 10th and after Corpus Christi fell behind by 2 more in the 11th,
Austin Wates jacked a 3-run homer to win the game. Wates ended up 3 for 5 at the plate with 6
RBIs. Jake Goebbert went 3 for 4 at the
dish with a double, a walk and two runs scored on Thursday. Ross Seaton started the game and got another
quality start, pitching 7 and allowing 2 runs, 2 walks and 4 strike outs. Henry
Villar (3-2) picked up the win after coming on for the final 2 outs in the
11th.
New Orleans Zephyrs 3 Oklahoma City RedHawks 4
Oklahoma City didn't come alive offensively until the 7th
inning, when they scored all 4 RedHawks runs. Once they did
that on Thursday though, they effectively shut the door on New Orleans. Fernando Martinez went 2 for 4 with a pair of
RBI's Thursday. Angel Sanchez got on 3
times, hitting 2 of 3 and drawing a walk.
Paul Clemens took all the damage early, collecting 3 runs on 4 hits
through the first 4 and 2/3. After that,
the RedHawks kept it scoreless and only Hector Ambriz, who picked up the win,
allowed a hit. David Carpenter came on
for a perfect final frame of work.
Player of the Day:
The Zen-Master, Austin Wates collects the honor today. Wates collected 6 RBIs, tied the game in the
9th to force extra innings and then hit the game winning 3-run long ball in the
11th. That, my friends, is a meritorious
performance.
Pitcher of the Day: I'm
itching to give it to another ValleyCat, but since I've done that a few time in
a row now I'll get outside of my comfort zone.
Honestly, three guys deserve it today: Nathan Pettus, Murilo Gouvea and
Gabriel Garcia. All three are pitchers
for the Lexington Legends and they combined for the final 7 innings on
Thursday. These 3 guys kept it
scoreless, hitless, struck out 4 and allowed just a pair of walks. They are a very big part of that win and kept
the Legends in it through the 15th.

Happy Birthday - 5/11
LHP Gabriel Garcia (23)
A non-drafted free agent signing out of Venezuela in 2007, Garcia had a solid season in Lexington in 2011 with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.212 WHIP and an excellent SO:BB ratio. I had thought that he would be a bad fit for Lancaster with his extreme flyball tendencies, but he's actually doing just fine at home. In six appearances so far this season, he is 1-0 with a 7.04 ERA and a 2.608 WHIP, but at home he is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA and a 2.052 WHIP.

Non-Prospect Prospects to Watch - Part 2
Since everyone was coming up with lists of top prospects, I decided to dig a bit deeper and find a few players who don't appear on any top prospect list anywhere, but whose upside could land them there eventually. In case you missed it, I covered the position players in Part 1 here. This week I will be looking at the pitchers.
LHP MITCHELL LAMBSON
In 22 games with Tri-City, the 6'1" 198 lb. lefty went 2-6 with 2 saves, a 4.33 ERA, a 1.160 WHIP and a .248 batting average against with 39 strikeouts and 8 walks in 35.1 innings pitched. What first caught my notice with Lambson was his 9.9 SO/9 and his 4.88 SO:BB ratio so I decided to dig a little further.
He was projected by Baseball Prospect Report to work mostly around 86-88 with the ability to bump 90, but it wasn't his fastball that they wanted to talk about:
Finally, I looked at his splits. He had a 2.25 ERA and a 1.167 WHIP against lefties and a 5.40 ERA and a 1.157 WHIP vs. right-handed hitters. Of his 8 walks and 4 home runs allowed, all were against right-handed batters, and although he struck out right-handed batters at a higher rate and kept them to a lower batting average, those walks and home runs came back to hurt him. He will have to find consistency against right-handed batters to avoid being pigeonholed as a LOOGY, but if he continues to miss bats at his current high rate, I will keep watching this 21-year old.
RHP LUIS ORDOSGOITTI
Ordosgoitti spent most of his 2011 season at Greeneville where he was 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.227 WHIP in 9 appearances (7 starts) over 44 innings pitched. The then 18-year old also had an 8.6 SO/9 and a 6.00 SO/BB ratio for Greeneville. If that's not enough reason to watch him, Orodosgoitti will be 19 for the entire 2012 season and at 6'4" 180 lbs. has plenty of room to fill out and increase velocity.
There's not a great deal of information out there on the big Venezuelan right-hander. Nathaniel Stoltz of Seedlings to Stars calls him "a really intriguing sleeper arm" who he wouldn't be shocked to see on some top 100 lists next year. I asked Jeff Luhnow about Ordosgoitti. He wasn't familiar with him, but after looking him up, said that "reports are very positive as are his numbers," and went on to cite a good fastball, developing curveball and change-up ... "a possible major league starter."
Luis is another pitcher that will miss a lot of bats. His biggest problem in 2011 were his road numbers. While he had a 1.59 ERA at home for Greeneville, his road ERA was 6.33. If he can get his road numbers under control and continues to fill out that 6'4" frame, Ordosgoitti could be going places quickly. I look forward to seeing what he can do in 2012.
LHP REYMIN GUDUAN
Guduan wasn't on my original list of three until I saw a tweet from Jeff Luhnow when he was in the Dominican Republic that Guduan had an "impressive arm" and "was up to 97 in fall." And he might still not be on my short list had I not delved a little more deeply on his numbers.
Guduan was definitely on my "watch list" with his 2.16 ERA and 12 SO/9 for the DSL in 13 starts, but there was the matter of 42 walks to go with 61 strikeouts and the 13 wild pitches and the 4 hit batters that gave me pause. But hitting 97 on the radar gun will get you a little more leeway, particularly for a 6'4" 185 lb. lefty who still has time to fill out since he doesn't turn 20 for a couple of weeks.
So I looked for improvement and I found it. In 2010, he had a 0.61 SO/BB ratio and 8.40 SO/9. Here is how he fared last summer:
June 3.24 ERA 1.740 WHIP 0.95 SO/BB 9.72 SO/9 10.26 BB/9
July 1.47 ERA 1.582 WHIP 2.08 SO/BB 13.25 SO/9 6.38 BB/9
Aug 0.93 ERA 1.138 WHIP 2.50 SO/BB 13.97 SO/9 5.59 BB/9
Sure, I'd still like to see less wildness, but "effectively wild" can work too. Did I mention that he's a lefty that can throw 97? Yeah, that will get you on the short list every time.

In other words, don’t sleep on Lambson."They go on to mention his plus command and plus control.

Final Winter League Recap
DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE FINALS
Escogido over Aguilas 6-5 to win the Championship
Aneury Rodriguez pitched 3.2 innings in relief in game nine of this best of nine series. He gave up three hits, no runs, no walks and had three strikeouts to end the playoffs with a 1.29 ERA. And he gets bragging rights at Spring Training, along with the Arizona Fall League Astros who won their championship, and Jimmy VanOstrand who won a gold medal in the Pan-Am games.

Sergio Escalona - 5 games with an 0.00 ERA

The Hardest Working Pitcher in Winter Ball
[NOTE: Garcia appeared in another game last night after I had written the following and was charged with two runs.]
He may not technically be the hardest working pitcher in winter ball, but no Astros pitcher has appeared in more games this winter than LHP Gabriel Garcia. In regular season play this winter, Garcia appeared in 28 games for the Magallanes team in his native Venezuela. Through January 16th, he had pitched in 7 post-season games as well. It appears that he has been used primarily, but not solely, as a situational lefty with very good results.
