Another Tough Goodbye
I woke up this morning to find out that another player who I came to know as a person and for whom I grew to care will no longer be a part of our Astros minor league family. The downside for me in getting to know these young men is that I do become attached to many of them. The upside is that knowing them makes my life richer.
I'm glad I got to see Jason Chowning in action when I was in Lexington. When he was on, he was simply unhittable. I'm also glad I got to see him off the mound as well. He was the guy in the clubhouse that kept things loose. When I asked the ubiquitous question, "Who on the team makes you laugh?" the answer was invariably "Chowning."
But Mike Foltynewicz also told me that he looked up to Jason. When Folty first came to Lexington for his first full season, Jason "took him in" and helped him make the adjustments to the daily grind of baseball. And they became good friends.
Which I can understand. Jason is one of those people who is just easy to connect with. When I'd tweet him about a good performance, I'd generally get back a breezy, "Thank ya mama, I'm tryin." I don't know whether Jason will stay in baseball or whether he will now pursue his other dream of a career in law enforcement, but either way, I wish him the best. I'll be watching, son.

SUNDAY'S RESULTS
Springfield over Corpus Christi 10-1
After a good start last time around, Brett Oberholtzer reverted to form as he continues to struggle to find his way pitching in the Texas League. In six innings, he gave up five runs on six hits, including two home runs. Henry Villar followed with his third perfect inning since coming off the DL. Erick Abreu was not perfect, however, as he gave up four runs (2 earned) on two hits in only one inning. Alex Sogard got touched for a run in his one inning as well. The Hooks were held to six singles and one double (hit by Brett Oberholtzer) with no one player having a multi-hit game. Jonathan Villar stole two bags and is now at 21 for the season with five caught stealing.
Lake Elsinore over Lancaster 6-5 in 14 innings
This one was a heartbreaker as Lancaster scored one in the top of the tenth, only to have Gabriel Garcia give up a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to tie it back up. Bobby Doran had a good start, but was the victim of a throwing error that caused two of his four runs to be unearned over his 7.1 innings. Kirk Clark pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief despite walking three batters, Garcia was charged with a blown save and Jose Trinidad got the loss. Domingo Santana was three-for-six with a triple and two RBIs. Jonathan Meyer also had three hits.
Albuquerque over Oklahoma City 11-9
This was another heartbreaker as Oklahoma City scored eight runs in the final two frames only to fall short in the end. Paul Clemens (L, 5-4) is still struggling to find consistency on the mound as he gave up eight runs on 11 hits, five runs courtesy of the long ball, although he did have eight strikeouts. Juan Abreu and Jonnathan Aristil gave up the final three runs in relief. The Redhawks really battled in the eighth and ninth getting all eight runs playing small ball. Scott Moore was two-for-four with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored; Landon Powell was one-for-one with a double and two RBIs; and Angel Sanchez was two-for-two with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Brandon Barnes was one-for-four with an RBI and a walk in his season debut for Oklahoma City.
GAME OF THE DAY

What went right: Just a good old-fashioned team win.
Nick Tropeano wasn't exactly overwhelming the hitters in this one, but he kept Lexington in the game. Murilo Gouvea kept things under control in 1.2 innings and Jason Chowning sealed the deal in the ninth for his ninth save of the season. Zach Johnson hit a solo shot for his 52nd RBI of the season. Chris Epps hit a two run double.

TUESDAY'S RESULTS
High Desert over Lancaster 12-8
Tyson Perez (L, 3-1) wasn't able to recreate the phenomenal success of his first three starts as he went to the mound for the fourth time for Lancaster. In 5.1 innings, he gave up six runs on nine hits. Five of Perez' runs came via the long ball. Brian Streilein and Kirk Clark also struggled to be effective, allowing another six runs over the next 2.2 innings. Brad Dydalewicz was the only pitcher not to get mauled as he pitched the final frame. The ball was flying out of the park as the teams combined to hit eight home runs for the day. Down 12-3 going in to the bottom of the eighth, the JetHawks at least made it interesting, scoring five runs in the eighth, including back to back to back solo home runs by George Springer, Adam Bailey (3x5) and Domingo Santana (his second of the day) but the deficit proved to be too great to overcome.
Lexington over West Virginia 3-2
Nick Tropeano deserved a better fate than a no decision, but that's what he got with the blown save from Carlos Quevedo (who went on to get the win). Tropeano pitched 6.1 innings, giving up four hits and a run (on a runner Quevedo allowed to score) with no walks and eight strikeouts. The pitching staff didn't have much room for error as Lexington only had three hits. Thankfully one of those hits was a two run home run by Drew Muren which proved to be the game winner. Five walks and two stolen bases (including Delino Deshields 29th) helped the Legends cause; Zach Johnson got an RBI (his 48th) on a ground out thanks to two walks, a wild pitch and a stolen base in front of him. Jason Chowning got his eighth save, giving up one hit with three strikeouts.

What went right: Long balls from Jimmy Paredes, Brett Wallace and Brad Snyder.
Paul Clemens wasn't exactly overpowering in his start, but it didn't matter as his offense came to the rescue with three-run home runs from Brett Wallace and Brad Snyder and a solo shot by Jimmy Paredes. The bullpen only allowed one run over the final four innings. In addition to some great hitting, Paredes stole a pair of bags and Fernando Martinez added a couple of outfield assists to the mix. It was a solid team effort.

SATURDAY'S RESULTS
Reno over Oklahoma City 14-9
I always say that if you have to lose, you might as well do it in spectacular fashion. Dallas Keuchel (L, 4-3) did just that as he gave up 12 runs on 13 hits and raised his ERA from 2.09 to 3.75 in one fell swoop. I didn't watch the game and have no idea exactly why Keuchel was instructed to intentionally walk someone with one out and one on IN THE FIRST INNING, but apparently he was. I wouldn't intentionally walk Josh Hamilton in the first inning with the bases loaded, much less in that situation, but I digress. Despite Keuchel having an off night (vast understatement), the Redhawks tried to battle back, scoring eight runs in the last four innings but fell short. Jimmy Paredes (2B, 3B, 4R) and Brett Wallace (HR, 3RBI) were both 3x5 for the night. Mike Hessman and Carlos Corporan homered as well.
Corpus Christi over Midland 5-4
Ross Seaton (W, 3-3) continued his progress as he put up his third quality start in a row, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Jason Stoffel pitched two innings for his fifth save. The Hooks came from behind in this one with Jake Goebbert's RBI double in the eighth giving them the lead. Goebbert was 2x3 for the night; Kody Hinze was 2x4 with an RBI; and Jon Singleton was 1x3 with two walks and two runs scored. Austin Wates was back in the lineup so apparently there are no lingering problems from being hit by a pitch the other night.
Lexington over Kannapolis 7-5
Mike Foltynewicz (W, 5-1) wasn't at his sharpest, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over six innings, but he kept the Legends in the game. He started the seventh inning, but was pulled with runners on first and third and no outs. Murilo allowed one of Foltynewicz' runners to score before getting out of the inning. Jason Chowning had a two inning adventure while getting his seventh save of the season. In the eighth inning, Chowning struck out the side working around a base runner who reached on a fielding error and THREE passed balls by Mike Kvasnicka to allow only one unearned run in the frame. The ninth inning was thankfully a bit more routine. Jordan Scott and Chan Moon each had two hits. Zach Johnson, Scott and Moon each had two RBIs. Johnson now has a league-leading 44 RBIs on the season and Delino DeShields stole his 26th base.
GAME OF THE DAY
Lancaster over Inland Empire 8-4
Ruben Alaniz pitched a solid six innings for his fourth win. Except for a bit of a hiccup from Brad Dydalewicz in the ninth, the bullpen pitched strongly. Ben Orloff and George Springer were the stars of the night, but everyone in the lineup either got a hit or drew a walk. The win, Lancaster's fifth in a row, put them in sole possession of first place in their division.

SATURDAY'S RESULTS
Reno over Oklahoma City 14-9
I always say that if you have to lose, you might as well do it in spectacular fashion. Dallas Keuchel (L, 4-3) did just that as he gave up 12 runs on 13 hits and raised his ERA from 2.09 to 3.75 in one fell swoop. I didn't watch the game and have no idea exactly why Keuchel was instructed to intentionally walk someone with one out and one on IN THE FIRST INNING, but apparently he was. I wouldn't intentionally walk Josh Hamilton in the first inning with the bases loaded, much less in that situation, but I digress. Despite Keuchel having an off night (vast understatement), the Redhawks tried to battle back, scoring eight runs in the last four innings but fell short. Jimmy Paredes (2B, 3B, 4R) and Brett Wallace (HR, 3RBI) were both 3x5 for the night. Mike Hessman and Carlos Corporan homered as well.
Corpus Christi over Midland 5-4
Ross Seaton (W, 3-3) continued his progress as he put up his third quality start in a row, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Jason Stoffel pitched two innings for his fifth save. The Hooks came from behind in this one with Jake Goebbert's RBI double in the eighth giving them the lead. Goebbert was 2x3 for the night; Kody Hinze was 2x4 with an RBI; and Jon Singleton was 1x3 with two walks and two runs scored. Austin Wates was back in the lineup so apparently there are no lingering problems from being hit by a pitch the other night.
Lexington over Kannapolis 7-5
Mike Foltynewicz (W, 5-1) wasn't at his sharpest, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over six innings, but he kept the Legends in the game. He started the seventh inning, but was pulled with runners on first and third and no outs. Murilo allowed one of Foltynewicz' runners to score before getting out of the inning. Jason Chowning had a two inning adventure while getting his seventh save of the season. In the eighth inning, Chowning struck out the side working around a base runner who reached on a fielding error and THREE passed balls by Mike Kvasnicka to allow only one unearned run in the frame. The ninth inning was thankfully a bit more routine. Jordan Scott and Chan Moon each had two hits. Zach Johnson, Scott and Moon each had two RBIs. Johnson now has a league-leading 44 RBIs on the season and Delino DeShields stole his 26th base.
GAME OF THE DAY
Lancaster over Inland Empire 8-4
Ruben Alaniz pitched a solid six innings for his fourth win. Except for a bit of a hiccup from Brad Dydalewicz in the ninth, the bullpen pitched strongly. Ben Orloff and George Springer were the stars of the night, but everyone in the lineup either got a hit or drew a walk. The win, Lancaster's fifth in a row, put them in sole possession of first place in their division.

Jonas Dufek simply hasn't gotten into a groove as a starter at Lexington yet; his 5.1 innings were unimpressive. Evan Grills got the win in relief despite making things a little more exciting than they needed to be, and unsurprisingly Jason Chowning pitched two dominating innings (no hits, no walks, four strikeouts) to get his fourth save of the season. Delino DeShields hit his second home run of the season and stole two bags to bring his season total to 18. Matt Duffy (2x3, RBI, BB), Alex Todd (2x3, 2B, RBI, 2BB), and John Hinson (1x4 2B 2RBI) also had good nights.

Austin Wates and Jake Goebbert hit back to back solo homers. Jonathan Singleton (2B, RBI) and Jonathan Villar were both 2x4, and Andy Simunic had an RBI double.
Omaha over Oklahoma City 4-2

David Martinez, in his first start since coming off the DL, pitched a strong six innings but it was Kirk Clark who got the win in relief with three terrific innings in which he allowed only one single. Adam Bailey was practically a one man wrecking crew, scoring two of Lancaster's three runs via an inside the park home run and a solo home run.

MONDAY'S RESULTS
Savannah over Lexington 10-9 in 12 innings
The fact that Lexington came back and tied this one up was quite a feat considering starting pitcher Kyle Hallock gave up five home runs in only 3.1 innings pitched. Carlos Quevedo and Jason Chowning each pitched very well (each pitching three innings of relief) and allowed the Legends some breathing room to catch up. Jason Chowning, in particular, dominated in a longer role than his normal one to two innings -- he has yet to give up an earned run this season. After getting some good swings in on Saturday with little to show for it, Kvasnicka broke through in a big way on Monday with a 3x6 game, including a three-run home run. Several players had good days at the plate (Matt Duffy has hit home runs in his last three games) and Delino DeShields was a terror on the basepaths with three stolen bags, but Lexington couldn't capitalize on a couple of late opportunities, and a wild pitch by Dayan Diaz allowed Savannah to score the winning run in the 12th inning.
Frisco over Corpus 9-4
Erick Abreu (L, 2-1) struggled, giving up three home runs in his four innings pitched. And the bullpen (in the guise of Alex Sogard, Josh Zeid and Jason Stoffel) couldn't shut Frisco down either. Corpus was limited to three hits and one walk, with one of the hits being a three-run homer from Kody Hinze. T.J. Steele was 0-4 with two strikeouts and is hitting .149. Overall, not a day to remember so let's not.
Albuquerque over Oklahoma City 5-0
Brett Oberholtzer (L, 0-1) pitched very well through his first five innings, but started to struggle in the sixth. Adalberto Flores and Juan Abreu finished things off. Fernando Martinez, Scott Moore and Justin Ruggiano all hit doubles, but J.B. Shuck was the only player to get multiple hits with his two singles. The team was 0-10 with runners in scoring position. Another forgettable game to put behind us.

None today. Partly because none of our boys won, but mostly because my flight got delayed and I didn't get home until almost one in the morning.

Matt Duffy and Drew Muren had two hit nights, with Duffy and Zach Johnson getting doubles. Johnson's two RBI's give him 26 over just 20 games.

As a matter of fact, everyone got in the hit column except for the recently torrid Brandon Barnes.
Rancho Cucamonga over Lancaster 5-4
Jorge de Leon made a spot start in place of the injured David Martinez and it took six pitchers to get through this one. Brad Dydalewicz and Kirk Clark were both charged with blown saves. No one really let it get out of control, but Pat Urckfitz was the only pitcher putting up a clean outing. Kike Hernandez had a terrific night with a triple and a home run. Erik Castro also homered, George Springer and Domingo Santana had doubles and Rafy Valenzuela was 2x4.
GAME OF THE DAY
Oklahoma City over Round Rock 11-5
What went right: Offense, Offense, Offense. Henry Sosa got the win despite giving up five runs on eight hits. But it was the offense on this one -- three doubles and three home runs, including a grand slam from Mike Hessman, that put this one out of reach for Round Rock as OKC scored eight runs in the third inning.

Okay, it was 10-0, but it might as well have been 1000-0 as the pitching staff in the form of Jose Cisneros, Erick Abreu and Jonnathan Aristil did their impression of the 2011 Astros in meltdown mode. Adalberto Flores had a clean inning. Jonathan Singleton, Brandon Barnes (2B) and Jair Fernandez were the only three players to get a hit and they only got one each. Austin Wates stole his first base. That's about it. The Hooks have now lost five in a row.

Jordan Lyles got his third win and Xavier Cedeno his first save in the 7-inning 1st game. Brian Bixler really, really, really doesn't want to be in Oklahoma City. Game 2 - Oklahoma City over Nashville 4-2
Sergio Perez got the spot start in place of an ailing Paul Clemens (back spasms). He and Mickey Storey pitched the first five, giving up one run each. Fernando Abad pitched the final two innings and earned the win as he gave up only one hit (with four strikeouts) and preserved his ERA at 0.00. Jimmy Paredes was practically a one-man wrecking crew as he went 2x3 with a home run and a two-run single in the 9th. J.B. Shuck contributed the other RBI.
Lake Elsinore over Lancaster 8-1
After playing much better fundamental baseball the last several days, Lancaster regressed in this one with a fielding error by Castro, two passed balls by Heath and two wild pitches by Doran helping to seal their fate as Bobby Doran was charged with the loss. Andrew Robinson continues to struggle in the bullpen as he gave up one hit, three runs and two walks in only one inning pitched. The offense consisted of singles by Jio Mier and Adam Bailey and a triple by Domingo Santana. Jio also stole two bases, his first of the season.
GAME OF THE DAY
Lexington over Kannapolis 2-0
What went right: Pitching and one very timely double. Nick Tropeano dealt for eight innings and Jason Chowning closed the door. Between the two of them, they had 12 strikeouts. There wasn't much in the way of offense in this one as the game was tied at 0-0 going into the top of the 9th, but a Matt Duffy walk, an Alex Todd single and a two-run double for Roberto Pena turned out to be all that they needed.

I'm going with co-pitchers of the day because both Nick Tropeano and Jason Chowning are deserving. Tropeano had nine strikeouts on Thursday - eight swinging and one looking. He now has a total of 27 over 19 innings. Chowning only faced three batters and got three strikeouts - two swinging and one looking. As his tweet indicated, that is indeed a great one two punch.
PLAYER OF THE DAY
Jimmy Paredes earns the honors for getting hot at just the right time to allow Oklahoma City to sweep the doubleheader.

THURSDAY'S RESULTS

Okay, it was 10-0, but it might as well have been 1000-0 as the pitching staff in the form of Jose Cisneros, Erick Abreu and Jonnathan Aristil did their impression of the 2011 Astros in meltdown mode. Adalberto Flores had a clean inning. Jonathan Singleton, Brandon Barnes (2B) and Jair Fernandez were the only three players to get a hit and they only got one each. Austin Wates stole his first base. That's about it. The Hooks have now lost five in a row.
