Jarred Cosart, Kiké Hernandez, and Austin Wates traded to Marlins
Today, we saw a big trade go down. Jarred Cosart, the hometown kid, Enrique "Kiké" Hernandez, who quickly established himself as a fan favorite here even though he's only played a month in the Majors, and Austin Wates, the Astros' 3rd-round pick from 2010, were all traded to the Miami Marlins.
Coming to the Houston Astros are Colin Moran, Jake Marisnick, and Francis Martes. The Astros also recieved a competitive balance lottery pick in the deal. Here is a brief intro to all 3 players.
Moran, a 21-year-old 3B, is the nephew of longtime MLBer B.J. Surhoff and was the 6th overall pick in 2013 from North Carolina. He entered the 2014 season as the #2 prospect in the Marlins organization, according to Baseball America. He has spent the entire season with Jupiter in the Florida State League. He will be reporting to Corpus Christi.
Marisnick, 23, is an outfielder who was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the 3rd round from high school in Riverside, California. He is reporting to the Astros. Marisnick was BA's #3 prospect entering the year. He made his Major League debut last July 23.
Martes, an 18-year-old RHP, has been with the Marlins' Gulf Coast League team. This is his first season in the United States.

Well, it was great to see Jarred Cosart bring it for his hometown team. You could tell that he was proud to wear the H every time he took the mound. His results were a bit uneven, but he wanted to improve himself each and every day. Would it have been nice to see him stick around? You bet. I'll still wear his jersey. I won't speculate on what precipitated his departure here.
Kiké's a ballplayer. As a player who was largely overlooked by the rankings, he rose up and fought his way to the Majors even if the scouts and the pundits had already capped him as a utility player. I won't be surprised if he plays in the Majors for 10 years doing everything on the field and injecting some energy into a lineup.
Austin Wates, I believe, was simply a victim of the numbers game. He posted solid lines year in and year out, but he was never viewed as a hot prospect. I also think that he would have played in Houston had it not been for injuries that have kept him off the field, most notably the wrist problem that kept him on the shelf for most of last season.
Happy trails, Jarred, Enrique, and Austin. All the best as you continue to live your dream (or in Austin's case chase your dream) of being Major League Baseball players. No matter where your careers take you, I hope you hold Houston, Texas dear in your hearts and always remember that the Astros gave you your first Major League opportunities.

RHP Jarred Cosart (24)
Cosart was a 38th round draft pick by the Phillies in 2008, going in the lower rounds primarily because of signability issues. He came to Houston in July 2011 along with Jon Singleton, Josh Zeid and Domingo Santana in the Hunter Pence trade. Since his fantastic debut on July 12, 2013, he has gone 4-5 in 20 games with a 3.12 ERA and a 1.370 WHIP.
Two former Astros celebrate today as well ~
LHP Bob Knepper (60)
A second round draft pick by the Giants in 1972, Knepper came to Houston in December of 1980 as a part of the Giant's trade for Enos Cabell. He pitched for Houston from 1981 to 1989 with a 93-100 record, a 3.66 ERA and a 1.306 WHIP in 284 games (267 starts). His best season for the Astros was in 1986 when he went 17-12 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.140 WHIP. He was an All Star for Houston in 1981 and 1988, and let the National League in shutouts in 1978 and 1986 (for the Giants and Astros, respectively).
SS Miguel Tejada (40 as far as I know)
Originally signed by Oakland out of the Dominican Republic in 1993, Tejada came to Houston in a December 2007 trade with the Orioles for Luke Scott, Dennis Sarfate, Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Mike Costanzo one day before being named in the Mitchell Report in connection with steroids. He played in 316 games for Houston in 2008 and 2009, hitting .298/.327/.435. He was an All Star six times, won the Silver Slugger two times, was American League MVP in 2002, among many other notable achievements during his career. It was reported last week that he was signing a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins.

What a dominating performance from Astros pitching. The 4 pitchers combined to hold the Nats to 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 15.
Starting Pitcher: Jarred Cosart
Oh my. Cosart absolutely mowed down the Nationals for 5 innings. That curve to strike out Jayson Werth.... good Lord.
Final line: W (2-1), 5 IP, 9 K
Bullpen
3 relievers put the finishing touches on a shutout.
First up was Raúl Valdés, who came on in the 6th. He allowed a pair of singles and issued the only walk, which resulted in a bases-loaded situation, but he emerged from the inning unscathed when he got Ryan Zimmerman to fly out for the 3rd out.
Mike Foltynewicz tossed 2 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 4, as he continues to make a strong impression on the big league coaches. And finally, Josh Zeid closed the door, giving up a hit and striking out 2 in the 9th.
Offense
Well, in a game where the pitchers were absolutely filthy, 2 runs turned out to be enough.
Jason Castro opened the scoring in the 1st with an RBI groundout....
...and Jesús Guzmán went the other way to send one out in the 8th.
Marc Krauss had a multi-walk game; in fact, he drew both of the Astros' walks. This game wasn't without a tinge of bad news, though, as Carlos Correa was plunked on the left hand by Tyler Clippard in the 8th inning.

Astros Minor League Recaps
Thursday's Games
Oklahoma City over New Orleans 4-1
Jarred Cosart got six shutout innings, eight strikeouts and the win. He gave up four hits and didn't walk a batter. Rhiner Cruz and Alex Sogard took the next two innings with Sogard giving up the lone Zephyrs' run. Josh Zeid got his fifth save in style, striking out the side. The game was scoreless until OKC put up three in the sixth on a Carlos Perez RBI single (2x5 R) and a two-run double from Che-Hsuan Lin. Perez drove in the final run in the seventh inning as well. Brett Wallace was four-for-five with two doubles and scored two runs; Jon Singleton was one-for-three and walked twice; and Brandon Laird was two-for-five with a run.
Frisco over Corpus Christi 2-0
Jake Buchanan got the start, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk before giving way to three perfect innings from Carlos Quevedo and Sergio Escalona. The Hooks were held to three hits in the shutout with two of those hits belonging to Erik Castro.
Lancaster over Rancho Cucamonga 11-3
David Rollins got the win in commanding fashion, allowing only one hit over five innings while striking out nine. Tyson Perez (5H 1BB 5SO 1HR) allowed three runs in his four innings of work. The JetHawks wasted no time in getting their second half off to a good start by scoring five in the first inning on a wild pitch, a Telvin Nash (1x3 2RBI BB R) double and a Tyler Heineman home run. They added on one in the third with Andrew Aplin scoring on a throwing error. And then they went a little bit crazy in the fourth inning with doubles from Matt Duffy, Delino DeShields and Joe Sclafani, and two-run home runs from Chris Epps and M.P. Cokinos (2x3 BB 2R).
Quad Cities over Kane County 5-3
Juan Minaya allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four in four innings to start the game and was followed with a scoreless inning from Richard Rodriguez. Vincent Velasquez (5H 1R 3SO) pitched the next three frames and was awarded the win, and John Neely got his 11th save of the season. Rio Ruiz (3x4) doubled in the first run in the second before scoring later in the inning on an error. The next three came across on a Jesse Wierzbicki RBI single in the third, a Teoscar Hernandez (1x2 2B BB R) sac fly RBI in the fifth and a Rio Ruiz RBI double in the eighth. Roberto Pena was one-for-two with two walks and scored two runs.
Tri-City over Lowell 8-5 in 11 innings
Edison Frias got the start and allowed two runs on six hits and a walk in four innings and Charles Basford allowed another three in his two-thirds of an inning. Kyle Westwood only allowed one walk in his three and a third and Albert Minnis only allowed one hit in his two innings (and got the win). Chia-Jen Lo struck out the side in the 11th to earn his second save. It looked as though the Tri-City win streak might come to an end as they were shutout through seven, but they put up three in the eighth and two in the ninth to tie it and three more in the 11th to win it. Tony Kemp was two-for-five with a walk and scored two runs; Conrad Gregor was two-for-six with three RBI and a run scored; and Jose Fernandez was two-for-five and scored a run. Michael Martinez had the only extra base hit, a double. Martinez, D'Andre Toney and Jon Kemmer all had RBI.
Bluefield over Greeneville 5-0
Starter Enderson Franco allowed two runs on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts over five innings and was followed by two scoreless innings from Frederick Tiburcio and Jordan Mills. Gerardo Ramirez pitched the eighth and allowed three additional runs. Despite being shutout, Marc Wik (2x4 2B) and Wallace Gonzalez (2x3) had good outings.
DSL Red Sox over DSL Astros 4-3
Starter Juan Hernandez gave up three runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out three, but Junior Garcia (3.1IP 2H 1R 1BB 4SO) was charged with the loss after giving up a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. The Astros were held to four hits with one of them being a Brian Pena home run. Jarico Reynoso was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.
Player of the Day: Rio Ruiz is slowly getting up to speed. I really think he's going to be a very special player and his two RBI doubles last night give us a glimpse of that.
Pitcher of the Day: I've got to give the WTHB love to Jarred Cosart today. It wasn't simply the six shutout innings or the eight strikeouts, it was also the zero walks. If he can limit those walks, he'll be in Houston very, very soon. Honorable mention to a great performance from David Rollins and a dominant save from Josh Zeid.

Starter Juan Hernandez gave up three runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out three, but Junior Garcia (3.1IP 2H 1R 1BB 4SO) was charged with the loss after giving up a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. The Astros were held to four hits with one of them being a Brian Pena home run. Jarico Reynoso was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored.
Player of the Day: Rio Ruiz is slowly getting up to speed. I really think he's going to be a very special player and his two RBI doubles last night give us a glimpse of that.
Pitcher of the Day: I've got to give the WTHB love to Jarred Cosart today. It wasn't simply the six shutout innings or the eight strikeouts, it was also the zero walks. If he can limit those walks, he'll be in Houston very, very soon. Honorable mention to a great performance from David Rollins and a dominant save from Josh Zeid.

An Interview with Astros RHP Jarred Cosart
I caught up with Jarred Cosart in Oklahoma City on Sunday, the day after he got his sixth win of the season for the team. I had talked with his OKC Pitching Coach, Steve Webber, the day before to get his take on how Cosart has progressed this season, "I think he's developing a consistent delivery and being able to throw downhill more, use his secondary pitches more ... his curveball , his changeup. He's got three quality pitches so it's just a matter of him commanding the strike zone." And according to Cosart, that is precisely what he's working on and he feels good about his progress.

Cosart was a 38th round draft pick by the Phillies in 2008, going in the lower rounds primarily because of signability issues. He came to Houston in July 2011 along with Jon Singleton, Josh Zeid and Domingo Santana in the Hunter Pence trade. In 10 games (9 starts) at Oklahoma City so far this season, Cosart is 4-2 with a 2.55 ERA and a 1.196 WHIP.

His best season for the Astros was in 1986 when he went 17-12 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.140 WHIP. He was an All Star for Houston in 1981 and 1988, and let the National League in shutouts in 1978 and 1986 (for the Giants and Astros, respectively).

Originally signed by Oakland out of the Dominican Republic in 1993, Tejada came to Houston in a December 2007 trade with the Orioles for Luke Scott, Dennis Sarfate, Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Mike Costanzo one day before being named in the Mitchell Report in connection with steroids. He played in 316 games for Houston in 2008 and 2009, hitting .298/.327/.435. He was an All Star six times, won the Silver Slugger two times, was American League MVP in 2002, among many other notable achievements during his career.

Tuesday's Games
Quad Cities River Bandits
-Off day. The River Bandits will begin a seven-game home
stand today, playing the first three games against the Midwest League-leading Cedar
Rapids Kernels (21-8).
Lake Elsinore Storm 8, Lancaster JetHawks 5
Lancaster lost the lead twice on Tuesday and couldn't muster
the bats for a third comeback, recording only one hit after the seventh frame.
The second comeback though, was spearheaded by Andrew Aplin (2X5 R HR RBI) in
the seventh with his homer to lead off the inning. That homer also marked
Aplin's 27th RBI (tied for the most in the California League). David Rollins
led things off on the mound and through his five innings, allowed 4 runs (1ER)
on five hits while striking out half a dozen. Rollins saw scoring against him
in the second and fifth frames, but every other inning he pitched in was a
1-2-3 set. Tyson Perez (1-1) came on to pitch next and kept things scoreless
through the sixth and seventh, allowing one hit each inning. Perez only made it
one out into the eighth however and finished with three runs (2ER) on six hits,
one K and the loss. Kenny Long finished out the game for the JetHawks and
allowed a hit that scored an unearned run in the ninth, while striking out a
pair. Tyler Heineman also went two-for-five at the plate Tuesday, with a
double, run scored and RBI.
Corpus Christi Hooks 5, San Antonio Missions 10
The Hooks jumped out to a four-run lead in the bottom of the
first but that was erased by the end of the inning. Eight innings, five
pitchers and one scored run later, Corpus Christi was moving on to their off
day. Matt Heidenreich (2-3) got the start on the hill and one and a third
innings later his night was at a close, having allowed six runs on seven hits
with a walk and the loss. Jorge De Leon was the fifth and last pitcher of the
game for Corpus, working the bottom of the eighth and also was the only hurler
to not see a run scored during his shift. De Leon faced 5 batters, allowed 2
hits and struck out the same. Austin Wates quietly hit two-for-three Tuesday
while George Springer hit one-for-three with a walk, two runs scored and swiped
two bags. Springer now has nine stolen bases this season.
Tacoma Rainiers 1, Oklahoma City RedHawks 6
Oklahoma City nearly won this one in shutout fashion at home
on Tuesday, thanks in large part to starting pitcher Jarred Cosart (4-0) who
struck out 10 in his five and two thirds innings of work. Cosart also walked a
trio while giving up six hits-all singles. Josh Zeid (1.1 IP 2SO) and Rhiner
Cruz (1IP SO) followed on the mound, respectively and combined for two and a
third innings of perfect pitching. Kevin Chapman came on to finish out the game
on the rubber and after giving up a homer to the first batter he faced, retired
the final three batters in order, striking out one. Jake "The
Lumberjack" Elmore was a homer short of the cycle Tuesday, finishing
three-for-four with two runs scored, a double and a triple. Brett Wallace
batted two-for-four with a run scored and three RBI-two on his eighth-inning,
two-run homer. Marc Krauss hit one-for-four in the game with a run scored and
RBI on his seventh homerun of the year-a solo shot to lead off the fourth
inning.
Player of the Day: Jake "The Lumberjack" Elmore is
at it again and gets to wear the WTHB crown today. Any time you have a 3X4 game
and end up a just a homer short of the cycle you've had a special game. So
here's to the Elmore and his lumber, good job.
Pitcher of the Day: It's obviously Jarred Cosart. So obvious
in fact, I couldn't even think of a way to be witty about it. This guy threw
five and two thirds innings of shutout ball while striking out 10 in front of
the home crowd. If he has any room left on his back to pat, here's another for
the honors of the day.

Spring Training Update
On Wednesday, the Astros loudly announced that they welcome American League competition with a total smackdown of the Blue Jays. Yeah, yeah, it's only Spring Training, but it was a sweet win nonetheless. Offensively, it was a good day for Carlos Corporan (2-2B, RBI, R), J.D. Martinez (2x3, 2B, RBI), Matt Dominguez (2x2, 2B, RBI, 2R), Fernando Martinez (1x3, 2B, 2R, 2RBI) and some lad by the name of George Springer (more on him below). Wesley Wright was the only one of seven pitchers to allow more than one hit in his outing and the only one of the seven to have an ERA north of 0.00 right now.

Game 6 Minor League Standouts: George Springer got his first start of Spring Training and responded with a two home run, five RBI game. According to a tweet from GM Jeff Luhnow, the second home run hit the scoreboard. It's still early, but if he keeps this up, he will be starting the season at AAA instead of AA. Jarred Cosart pitched two innings and allowed one hit and one walk with one strikeout and is trying to make a case for breaking into the Astros starting rotation sooner rather than later. Jose Cisnero and Chia-Jen Lo also had good outings.
