Monday's Games
DSL Astros over DSL Rays 4-3 in 10 innings
Rayderson Chevalier pitched a very strong six innings as he allowed only one unearned run on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts, but Luis Abad couldn't hold the lead so Javier Saucedo got the win in relief. Frederick Serrano was three-for-three with an RBI, but it was Randy Cesar who was the hero with an RBI double in the bottom of the 10th for the win.
GCL Astros over GCL Cardinals 5-4
Chia-Jen Lo pitched another two innings as a part of his rehab and has still not given up an earned run. A total of six pitchers pitched in this one, with Reymin Guduan and Jandel Gustave struggling with both control and effectiveness as they each allowed two runs. Jose Montero, Alan Abreu and Ambiorix de Leon (W, 1-2) had very good outings keeping the game close and allowing Brett Phillips to hit a walk-off single to win it in the ninth. But it was a three-run home run from Teoscar Hernandez in the fourth and a Rio Ruiz RBI double scoring Carlos Correa in the fifth that put them in that position. In Carlos Correa's first game back in 10 days, he was hitless and only reached base once on a hit by pitch.
Greeneville over Bristol 6-2
Adrian Houser had a nice start with two runs on five hits and six strikeouts over five innings, but the win went to Zach Dando in relief. Dando, Jordan Jankowski and Andrew Walter pitched four innings of scoreless relief. Jean Batista was the hero of the night with a two-run home run. Ricky Gingras also homered. Jimmy Howick and Angel Ibanez were each two-for-four with an RBI.
Tri-City over Jamestown 3-0 in 7 innings (Game 1)
Brian Holmes took a no-hitter through 5.2 innings before allowing a single in the combined one-hit shutout as Blake Ford got his ninth save. Austin Elkins was the offensive star as he went two-for-three with two triples, an RBI and a run scored.
Tri-City over Jamestown 4-1 in 7 innings (Game 2)
This time it was Lance Day and Travis Ballew holding Jamestown to two hits and one run. And once again, it was Austin Elkins that stood out, going two-for-four with a double, a run scored and a stolen base.
Lexington over Hagerstown 11-1 (Game 1)
This was the continuation of the game started by Mike Foltynewicz on Sunday which was suspended in the middle of the fourth with Lexington leading 8-1. Folty pitched four innings and allowed Hagerstown's sole run. Mitch Lambson took over Monday and gave up only one hit and three walks over his four innings to qualify for the win. Lexington scored six runs in the first inning Sunday and chased out the starting pitcher. There were several good offensive performances. 2B Ruben Sosa was three-for-five with three runs scored; SS Jose Fernandez was two-for-four with two doubles and three RBI; and Nolan Fontana was two-for-two with three walks. Matt Duffy, Ryan McCurdy and Zach Johnson each had two RBI. Delino DeShields stole his 66th bag on Sunday; he sat out the continuation of the first game on Monday.
Lexington over Hagerstown 8-4 in 7 innings (Game 2)
Luis Cruz pitched extremely well until he got into a little trouble in the sixth, but still got the win, his seventh, after allowing four runs (two earned) over 5.2 innings. Murilo Gouvea took it the rest of the way. Delino DeShields had an incredible night, going three-for-three with a double, RBI, walk and three runs scored. Nolan Fontana and Mike Kvasnicka both hit two-run bombs. And Zach Johnson retook the league RBI lead with three RBI bringing his season total to 76 as he went two-for-four with two doubles. Luis Alvarez was two-for-two with a triple and two runs scored.
Lancaster over Modesto 2-1 in 10 innings
Starter Tyson Perez managed to give up only one run, a solo home run, on 10 hits and three walks in 6.2 innings, but it was Carlos Quevedo who dominated in a 3.1 inning relief performance, allowing only one hit with five strikeouts for the win. The JetHawks were held to seven singles, but Grant Hogue and Domingo Santana managed to make their singles count as they drove in the only two runs.
Corpus Christi at Midland - Postponed
Oklahoma City over Omaha 16-6
Starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel had to feel pretty confident about getting the win when his team turned their 4-2 lead into a 14-2 lead in the top of the sixth. Keuchel walked five, but only gave up two runs on four hits. You might think that a 10-run inning would rely heavily on home runs, but the Redhawks had already scored seven runs in the frame (thanks in large part to two errors and three wild pitches) before Jimmy Paredes put an exclamation point on it with a three-run bomb. Brad Snyder hit two home runs for four of his five RBIs. There were several offensive standouts in the game (enough that Brett Wallace's and Mike Hessman's 2-hit nights don't even make the short list):
Brandon Barnes - 3x4 2B RBI 3BB SO 2R
Jimmy Paredes - 3x6 HR 4RBI 2R
Matt Dominguez - 2x5 2B BB SO 3R
Brad Snyder - 3x5 2B 2HR 5RBI BB 3R
Landon Powell - 2x6 3RBI 2SO R
J.B. Shuck - 3x6 SO 2R
Player of the Day: There were tons of great performances, but I'm going to single out two. In the two games of the double-header, Austin Elkins was four-for-seven with a double, two triples, an RBI and scored two runs. That's pretty impressive any way you look at it. And Brad Snyder was hot at the plate with his two home runs and five RBIs.
Pitcher of the Day: If you take a no-no into the sixth inning and allow only one single, you too can be my pitcher of the day. Brian Holmes it is!

FRIDAY'S RECAPS
DSL Astros 3 DSL Indians 0
The DSL Astros played a relatively quiet game Friday until
the 6th inning. Juan Hernandez allowed only 3 hits over 5 in his 3rd, and
longest, outing of the season. Javier
Saucedo (W, 1-1) allowed just 3 hits as well and the duo combined for 9 shutout
innings. Until the 6th the Astros only had two base runners, Jarico Reynoso in
the 1st and Brian Pena in the 3rd, on with a walk and single respectively. They loaded the bases in the 6th with no outs
but failed to get any runners home. In the 7th the Astros had the bases juiced
again, with 1 out, after the Indian's Juan Garcia intentionally walked Brauly
Mejia. Yoel Silfa drew a walk and Randy Cesar
scored. After a pitching change by the Indians, Mesac Laguna scored the final
run of the inning on a wild pitch. The
bats clearly weren't very hot Friday morning; Brian Pena (.357) went 1 for 3 and
Brauly Mejia (.286) went 0 for 3 at the plate.
Asheville 5 Lexington 3
This is one of those games that the boxscore doesn't do
justice. After falling behind Asheville 2-0 in the 2nd, Luis Cruz pitched 6
more scoreless innings for Lexington and didn't leave the game with a bad line.
Cruz allowed 2 runs on 7 hits over 8.
However, he did have 2 wild pitches.
Delino DeShields went 2 for 4 at the plate, scored a run and swiped
stolen bases number 44 & 45 for the season. DeShields also picked up his
29th RBI and Justin Gominsky, who also went 2 for 4, picked up his 7th
RBI. In the bottom of the 8th, the
Legends came alive with 3 stolen bases and 2 runs aided by a couple throwing
errors by Asheville catcher Ryan Casteel.
Lexington had 4 stolen bases in the game. The bottom fell out in the top of the 9th, as
Carlos Quevedo, who came in to replace Cruz, gave up the tie and a 3 run homer
to Rosell Herrera. The final out of the
game was a fly out to deep center by Chan Moon that was 2 feet short of being a
2 run homer.
Corpus Christi 2 Frisco 3
This was another close game that was decided in the final
innings on Friday night. Ross Seaton
pitched 7 innings allowing only 2 runs.
Seaton also struck out 7 Frisco batters, his best this season. Carlos Lee, in his 2nd rehab game with the
Hooks, went 2 for 3 (both singles) before coming out in the 7th. Jon Singleton
went 1 for 4 and picked up his 41st RBI. Kody Hinze went 1 for 4 and hit his
7th home run (and 25th RBI) to tie the game at 2 in the top of the 7th inning. Kevin Chapman came on to pitch in the 8th and
hit the first batter he faced. This was
followed by a single and a walk to load the bases (it is worth noting that
after reaching this point in the game Chapman gained about 2 mph on his
fastball). With one out, Frisco's Ryan
Strausborger then grounded into a force out, the go-ahead run scored and then
the 5-4-3-2 double play was completed at home to end the inning (it was just as
odd to watch as to read, I assure you).
Oklahoma City 0 Round Rock 2
There's not much to say about this game except there's always
tomorrow. Oklahoma City was shut out for the 2nd time in the last 3 games and
the 4th time this season. Brian Bass
started the game for the RedHawks and after allowing 2 runs in the first, kept
his remaining 5 innings scoreless. He
finished the 6th inning with 9 hits, 4 walks and 1 strike out. Mickey Storey came on to pitch in the 7th and
threw a couple of 1-2-3 innings while collecting 2 strike outs. The bats were quiet as the RedHawks only
collected 4 hits the whole game, 2 of which came in the top of the 9th. The last hit belonging to Brad Snyder, allowing
him to continue a 13 game hitting streak.
GAME OF THE DAY
Inland Empire 4 Lancaster 14
David Martinez got the win (2-3) and threw 7 shutout innings,
giving up only 2 hits while striking out 5 Inland Empire batters. Brad Dydalewicz replaced him in the 8th
inning and Inland Empire finally got on the board with 4 runs. That wasn't nearly enough however, as the
JetHawks already had 13 runs by that point in the game and would score one more
in the bottom of the 8th. George
Springer and Domingo Santana both went 3 for 4 with 4 RBI's between them. Erik
Castro and Chris Epps both went 3 for 5 and collected 7 RBI's combined. Epps hit the only home run of the game, his
2nd of the season for Lancaster (he also had 2 for Lexington this year). Every JetHawk starting player got at least
one hit, 6 had multiple hit games and all but Enrique Hernandez scored a
run. Lancaster scored in every inning
except the 7th.
What went right: What didn't? A season high 19 hits, 4
players with 3 hit nights, a shutout performance by the starting pitcher, Stormtroopers in attendance, and to top it all off, Lancaster defeated the "Empire"
on Star Wars night.
What went wrong: Brad Dydalewicz did give up 4 runs in one
inning. He has now allowed 11 earned runs over 11.2 innings pitched for a 8.49
ERA this season.

Pitchers of the Day
David Martinez gets the honor for throwing 7 shutout innings
and allowing only a pair of hits.
Honorable mention goes to Juan Hernandez and Javier Saucedo for the
combination shutout in the DSL.
Players of the Day
Hats off to Brad Snyder for extending his hitting streak to
13 games and Delino Deshields for adding 2 more steals to bring his total to
45. A tip of the cap to Jon Singleton as
well for collecting his 41st RBI.

TUESDAY'S RESULTS
DSL Astros over DSL Cardinals 5-2
RHP Harold Arauz shone in his Astros debut as he pitched four innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Returning RHP Victor Mesa (W, 1-0) pitched five innings giving up one unearned run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. 2B Luis Reynosa (two hits and two RBIs), 3B Randy Cesar (three hits with a double), and RF Tomas de la Cruz (solo home run) were the offensive stars of the day.
Lakewood over Lexington 5-4
Starter Luis Cruz just didn't have it on Tuesday as he lasted only two innings and gave up five runs on four hits and five walks. Gabriel Garcia, in his first appearance since being sent down from Lancaster, pitched four very strong innings giving up only three hits and striking out three. Euris Quezada and Murilo Gouvea finished it off without giving up a run. Unfortunately, Lexington couldn't overcome the early deficit. Drew Muren hit a solo home run; Brandon Meredith was two-for-four with a double and an RBI; and Mike Kvasnicka was two-for-two with two walks and two runs scored in a rare start in right field (he hasn't started there this season). Delino DeShields stole his 37th base of the season and was caught for the fifth time of the season.
Lancaster over San Jose 10-6
A nice come from behind win kept the Jethawks within striking distance of first place. David Martinez got hit around a little (four earned runs on ten hits) but his ultimate demise after 4.1 wasn't helped by a passed ball and catcher's interference call by Rene Garcia. Jose Trinidad (W, 5-2) allowed one inherited runner to score, but after that the bullpen in the form of Trinidad, Andrew Robinson and Jason Chowning shut down San Jose, but not without a little extra drama as Chowning walked the bases loaded on two outs before bearing down to get a strikeout for the final out in his HiA debut. Lancaster fell behind in the fourth inning, but came back with four runs in the seventh on five singles, two walks (one intentional) and two errors. Grant Hogue (two RBIs) and Rene Garcia (RBI) both had three hits; Telvin Nash hit his 15th home run; and Ben Orloff (two RBIs), Jonathan Meyer (two runs) and Kike Hernandez (run, RBI) contributed two hits each for the night.
Corpus Christi - Off Day
GAME OF THE DAY
Oklahoma City over Iowa 4-3
What went right: A two-out three-run walk-off home run by Brad Snyder, baby!
Oklahoma City has won eight in a row, thirteen in a row at home, but it looked like their luck had finally run out until Brad Snyder took things into his hands and knocked in the winning runs. Wes Musick had another solid start, giving up three runs (two earned) in six innings. Sergio Perez, Chris Hicks and Enerio del Rosario (W, 1-2) combined to provide three innings of hitless relief. But it all came down to Snyder in the end.

Happy Birthday - 5/25
RF Brad Snyder (30)
Originally drafted by Cleveland in the first round in 2003, Snyder signed with Houston as a free agent in the offseason in 2011 after playing with both the Cleveland and Chicago organizations. He is currently hitting .295/.391/.589 for Oklahoma City.
RHP Jarred Cosart (22)
Cosart was a 38th round draft pick by the Phillies in 2008, going in the lower rounds primarily because of signability issues. He came to Houston in July 2011 along with Jon Singleton, Josh Zeid and Domingo Santana in the Hunter Pence trade. In seven starts at Corpus Christi, Cosart is 3-2 with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.684 WHIP.
Former Astros with birthdays today ~
LHP Bob Knepper (58)
A second round draft pick by the Giants in 1972, Knepper came to Houston in December of 1980 as a part of the Giant's trade for Enos Cabell. He pitched for Houston from 1981 to 1989 with a 93-100 record, a 3.66 ERA and a 1.306 WHIP in 284 games (267 starts). His best season for the Astros was in 1986 when he went 17-12 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.140 WHIP. He was an All Star for Houston in 1981 and 1988, and let the National League in shutouts in 1978 and 1986 (for the Giants and Astros, respectively).
SS Miguel Tejada (38 as far as I know)
Originally signed by Oakland out of the Dominican Republic in 1993, Tejada came to Houston in a December 2007 trade with the Orioles for Luke Scott, Dennis Sarfate, Matt Albers, Troy Patton and Mike Costanzo one day before being named in the Mitchell Report in connection with steroids. He played in 316 games for Houston in 2008 and 2009, hitting .298/.327/.435. He was an All Star six times, won the Silver Slugger two times, was American League MVP in 2002, among many other notable achievements during his career.

Lancaster - Off Day
TUESDAY'S RESULTS
High Desert over Lancaster 12-8
Tyson Perez (L, 3-1) wasn't able to recreate the phenomenal success of his first three starts as he went to the mound for the fourth time for Lancaster. In 5.1 innings, he gave up six runs on nine hits. Five of Perez' runs came via the long ball. Brian Streilein and Kirk Clark also struggled to be effective, allowing another six runs over the next 2.2 innings. Brad Dydalewicz was the only pitcher not to get mauled as he pitched the final frame. The ball was flying out of the park as the teams combined to hit eight home runs for the day. Down 12-3 going in to the bottom of the eighth, the JetHawks at least made it interesting, scoring five runs in the eighth, including back to back to back solo home runs by George Springer, Adam Bailey (3x5) and Domingo Santana (his second of the day) but the deficit proved to be too great to overcome.
Lexington over West Virginia 3-2
Nick Tropeano deserved a better fate than a no decision, but that's what he got with the blown save from Carlos Quevedo (who went on to get the win). Tropeano pitched 6.1 innings, giving up four hits and a run (on a runner Quevedo allowed to score) with no walks and eight strikeouts. The pitching staff didn't have much room for error as Lexington only had three hits. Thankfully one of those hits was a two run home run by Drew Muren which proved to be the game winner. Five walks and two stolen bases (including Delino Deshields 29th) helped the Legends cause; Zach Johnson got an RBI (his 48th) on a ground out thanks to two walks, a wild pitch and a stolen base in front of him. Jason Chowning got his eighth save, giving up one hit with three strikeouts.
Corpus Christi - Off Day
GAME OF THE DAY
Oklahoma City over Colorado Springs 9-5
What went right: Long balls from Jimmy Paredes, Brett Wallace and Brad Snyder.
Paul Clemens wasn't exactly overpowering in his start, but it didn't matter as his offense came to the rescue with three-run home runs from Brett Wallace and Brad Snyder and a solo shot by Jimmy Paredes. The bullpen only allowed one run over the final four innings. In addition to some great hitting, Paredes stole a pair of bags and Fernando Martinez added a couple of outfield assists to the mix. It was a solid team effort.
Paul Clemens (W, 5-3) - 5IP 8H 4R 1BB 4SO
Sergio Perez - 1IP 2H 1R 1BB
Xavier Cedeno - 2IP 0H 0R 3SO

Scott Moore - 3x3 2B 2RBI BB R
Brett Wallace - 1x4 HR 3RBI 2SO 2R
Brad Snyder - 1x1 HR 3RBI R
Landon Powell - 2x3 BB SO
What went wrong: Brian Bixler was 0-for-6 with three strikeouts, but since he is still hitting .331, I'll overlook it.
PITCHER OF THE DAY
I'm going to declare a tie. Nick Tropeano pitched extremely well and should have gotten the win. Jason Chowning got his eighth save; he has no walks and 19 strikeouts in his last seven appearances.
PLAYER OF THE DAY
Brad Snyder gets the glory for a pinch hit three run jack.

Xavier Cedeno - 2IP 0H 0R 3SO
David Carpenter - 1IP 1H 0R
Jimmy Paredes - 2x5 HR RBI SO 2R SB
Fernando Martinez - 1x4 2B BB 2SO 2R

MONDAY'S RESULTS
West Virginia over Lexington 3-2
Lexington took an early lead with a two-run Matt Duffy home run in the first but they weren't able to scratch across any more runs when they needed them. Mike Foltynewicz pitched five innings, giving up one run (in the first) and two walks with six strikeouts. Nathan Pettus was charged with the blown save and the loss after giving up two runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Murilo Gouvea took it the rest of the way with another good outing. None of the Legends were able to get more than one hit in the game as they were held to six total hits.
Corpus Christi and San Antonio 1-1 suspended after 8 innings
This rain-interrupted game will resume in the top of the ninth at 6:05 this evening followed by the regularly scheduled game. I watched a bit of this one and Ross Seaton looked good despite some shaky defense behind him (one play in particular deserved an error but I guess the official scorer couldn't decide which of the three Hooks involved to charge it to). The big knock on Seaton is that he's not a big strikeout pitcher, but not everyone has to be. The pitcher I saw last night was very effective at pitching to contact. He is showing improvement this year, despite a couple of shaky starts and now has his ERA down to 3.65 with a 1.351 WHIP. If he can limit the long ball, I think he'll be just fine as a contact pitcher. I will post a full recap of this game tomorrow after it has been completed.
Rancho Cucamonga over Lancaster 5-1
Ruben Alaniz (L, 3-1) got his first loss of the season. He didn't allow any big innings or any walks, but he didn't strike out a single batter either. Andrew Robinson allowed one run in 1.1 innings of relief. Domingo Santana was 2x4 with a double and a home run, but none of the other Hawks hitters managed more than one single for the night.
GAME OF THE DAY
Oklahoma City over Tucson 4-3
What went right: A good start by Keuchel and timely hitting.
Dallas Keuchel gave up one run in the first and then cruised until the top of the eighth. He ended the night with three runs over 7.1 innings pitched. Juan Abreu was pulled after allowing one of Keuchel's runners to score and issuing two walks without recording an out. Adalberto Flores took it the rest of the way and earned the win as Jimmy Paredes hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to tie it and Brad Snyder hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth.
Dallas Keuchel - 7.1IP 6H 3R 1BB 5SO
Juan Abreu - 0.0IP 2BB
Adalberto Flores (W, 2-0) - 1.2IP 0H 0R 0BB 1SO
Jimmy Paredes - 2x4 HR 2RBI 2R SB
Brett Wallace - 1x4 RBI 3SO
Brad Snyder - 2x3 2B HR RBI BB R CS
What went wrong: Juan Abreu has yet to show any consistency out of the pen this season and tonight wasn't any different.
PITCHER OF THE DAY
Despite good starts by both Foltynewicz and Keuchel, I'm going to go with Ross Seaton. I enjoyed watching him pitch last night and I hope that he is turning the corner in his development.
PLAYER OF THE DAY
I'll send Brad Snyder a little love for his walk-off home run.

Roster Moves - 11/12/11
Houston signed OF Brad Snyder to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. He has decent minor league numbers (except for the strikeouts) but it looks as though he's never gotten much of a chance beyond that. Zachary Levine has the story here.
