Happy Birthday to ~
RHP Jorge de Leon (27)
Originally signed by the Astros as a NDFA out of the Dominican Republic, de Leon is in his ninth season in the Astros system, but only his fifth season as a pitcher as he was originally signed as a shortstop. De Leon started the season in Corpus Christi, but was promoted to Oklahoma City at the end of May. In a combined 39 appearances out of the bullpen in those two venues, he is 4-4 with a 3.19 ERA and a 1.274 WHIP. De Leon did get his feet wet in the major leagues last season with 11 appearances for Houston in which he had a 5.40 ERA and a 1.900 WHIP.

Class debuts!
Omaha 4, Oklahoma City 1
W- Sugar Ray Marimon (3-1)
L- Rudy Owens (2-1)
S- Kameron Loe (1)
OKC home runs: Andy Simunic (1, solo in 7th)
The OKC offense has really hit a rut; this was the 6th straight game in which they've scored 3 runs or fewer, and they've scored just 10 runs over their last 6 contests.
Andy Simunic went 2-3, and his solo homer (1) in the 7th inning accounted for the RedHawks' lone run. Jon Singleton also went 2-3 with a double and a bunt single.
Rudy Owens threw 6 innings and allowed 4 runs (both on 2-run doubles) on 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Jason Stoffel walked 2 in the 7th, but also struck out 2 in the inning. Josh Zeid worked around a walk to strike out the side in the 8th.
The series finale will take place later this morning, as Mike Foltynewicz will face Ramon Troncoso at 11:05 A.M.
San Antonio 6, Corpus Christi 4
W- Devin Jones (4-1)
L- Kyle Smith (0-1, 4-1 season)
S- Johnny Barbato (7)
CC home runs: None.
The Hooks fought back from an early 6-0 deficit, but ran out of steam.
All 4 Hooks runs came in the 5th. Matt Duffy ignited the rally by drawing a walk, and he scored the first run of the game on a double from Preston Tucker. An error allowed Jio Mier to reach while Tucker took 3rd; they both came home on Tyler Heineman's 2-run triple. Heineman would score on an M.P. Cokinos groundout. Duffy and Heineman had 2 hits apiece.
The Missions greeted Kyle Smith rather rudely in his AA debut. He went 5 innings and gave up 6 runs on 9 hits (3 solo homers) and struck out 6. Alex Sogard allowed 3 hits and struck out 1 over 3 scoreless, and Jorge De Leon worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 9th.
Game 3 of this series has Tommy Shirley on the mound, and he'll be taking on John Hussey. First pitch is at 7:10.
Lancaster 8, San Jose 6
W- Dan Minor (2-1)
L- Jorge Bucardo (0-2)
S- Mitch Lambson (2)
Lancaster home runs: Teoscar Hernandez (4, solo in 2nd)
The power of the 7th-inning stretch. The JetHawks erased a 5-2 deficit with a 6-run bottom of the 7th to take the series finale and 2 of 3 in the series.
Roberto Peña went 2-4 and hit an RBI single in the 4th to put the JetHawks on the board, down 3-1. Teoscar Hernandez went 3-5 with a solo homer in the 5th (4). After seeing his average drop to .234 on April 30, Hernandez has responded by going 7-12 with a couple of 3-hit games in the series to raise his average to .269.
Danry Vasquez, Ruben Sosa, and Tony Kemp all walked to begin the 7th, and Hernandez promptly sent them all home with a double that tied the game. Teoscar was credited with 2 RBI, as an error was committed on the play. Carlos Correa then hit a single and advanced to 2nd on a throw to 3rd. Rio Ruiz walked to re-load the bases. After Dan Gulbransen and Peña became the first 2 casualties of the inning, Carlos Perdomo came through with a 2-run single. Vasquez, who went 2-3 with a double and started all of this with a leadoff walk, came back up and hit an RBI single. Carlos Correa was 2-5 with 2 runs scored.
Kent Emanuel went 4.2 innings and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3 in his High-A debut. Dan Minor threw 2.1 scoreless, allowing a walk while fanning 2. Mitch Lambson was taken deep by Mitch Delfino to begin his outing... but no matter. After the homer, Lambson struck out the side in the 8th, and worked around a hit batter to close it out. He struck out 4 in 2 innings, and Delfino's home run was the only hit he gave up.
The JetHawks will now hit the road to begin a 4-game series in Lake Elsinore. Lance McCullers gets the start in the opener; his opponent will be Joe Ross. First pitch is at 6:05.
Beloit 6, Quad Cities 3
W- Junior Mendez (1-2)
L- Adrian Houser (0-1)
S- Sam Bragg (2)
QC home runs: None.
Well, the crooked-numbered inning bit Quad Cities once again, as a 4-run 5th was the difference for the Snappers.
Chan-Jong Moon hit a 1-out single in the top of the 1st, stole 2nd (8), and came around to score on a Conrad Gregor single. That would be QC's only run until Chase McDonald hit a 2-run single in the 8th. Jack Mayfield was the only River Bandit with a multi-hit day, going 2-5 with a double and a run scored. Mayfield is now on a 6-game hitting streak. Brett Phillips extended his hitting streak to 5 with a single in the 3rd.
Adrian Houser pitched 3.2 innings and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits, walked 5, and struck out 2. 4 of those 5 runs came in the 5th and came in the form of a Tyler Marincov grand slam. Tyler Brunnemann struck out 1 over 1.1 perfect innings, and Gonzalo Sañudo allowed a run on a force out in the 8th, a hit, and walked 2 in 3 innings.
The River Bandits will return home to open up a 3-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. TBA (was Kent Emanuel's spot in the rotation) will take on Ethan Mildren at 7:00.

W- Joe Kelly (2-1)
L- Jerome Williams (0-1)
S- Trevor Rosenthal (2)
Astros home runs: None.
Again, the Cardinals stormed out of the gate and mauled an Astros starter in the process.
Starting Pitcherr: Jerome Williams
Let's just say that Williams had some difficulty in keeping the ball in the park and leave it at that.
Final line: L (0-1), 4 IP, 9 H (3 home runs), 6 ER, 2 K
Bullpen
Astros relievers were solid once again as they combined for 4 scoreless innings to finish off the game. Anthony Bass allowed a hit and struck out 1 in 1.2 innings, Raúl Valdés allowed a hit and struck out 1 in 0.2 innings (final out of the 6th and first out of the 7th), and Jorge De Leon retired all 5 Cardinals that he faced, striking out 2 in 1.2 innings.
Offense
The Astros only managed 3 hits, but still put up 3 runs. Alas, the early hole proved to be too deep to dig out.
They didn't have a hit until the 6th, when Jonathan Villar led off with a triple. They didn't have to wait very long for their 2nd hit (and first run, for that matter), when Robbie Grossman legged out an infield single to bring Villar home. Grossman would later score on a wild pitch from Jorge Rondon/Matt Dominguez walk.
Adron Chambers walked to lead off the 7th and would score on a double from Jesús Guzmán.

2014 Grapefruit League Recap, Game 16
Washington Nationals 4, Houston Astros 3
2014 Grapefruit League record: 7-9
W- Gio Gonzalez (1-1)
L- Scott Feldman (0-1)
S- Manny Delcarmen (2)
Astros home runs: None.
After getting run out of Lakeland, the Astros returned back to their home base in Kissimmee to take on the Nats.
Starting Pitcher: Scott Feldman
The Opening Day starter got taken deep twice by Steven Souza in the 2nd and the 4th. He also pitched the 5th, but was lifted after allowing a leadoff single. A run ended up being charged to him. Feldman didn't walk anyone, and got his usual quota of groundouts (7 groundouts, no flyouts) in 4 innings of work.
Final line: L (0-1), 4 IP, 8 H (2 solo HR), 3 ER (1 inherited), 5 K
Bullpen
Jorge De Leon came on to relieve Feldman and got 2 quick strikeouts. That final out proved to be a little more elusive (isn't it always) than he would've liked. De Leon allowed a single, then uncorked a wild pitch to allow the runners to advance. He then walked Souza to load the bases, and Brian Goodwin made him pay (well, he also made Feldman pay too) by spraying an RBI single to score a run.
Brad Peacock pitched the final 4 innings and got dinged in the 7th by an RBI triple hit by... Steven Souza. Other than that, he was excellent in those 4 frames, striking out 4.
Offense
8 players had 1 hit apiece.
L.J. Hoes put the Astros on the board (down 3-1) in the 5th with an RBI single. They got a pair of RBI doubles from Jose Altuve in the 7th and Jon Singleton in the 8th. Unfortunately, the Astros couldn't get the breakthrough as Carlos Correa struck out with the tying run on 2nd to end the game.
On a more somber note: These strikeouts (1 BB, 9 Ks yesterday). Yuck. If they threaten their own record for strikeouts again this season, we could be in for some sad times.

Roster Moves
The Astros have re-signed free agent RHP Jorge de Leon. De Leon was a shortstop in the Astros system out of the Dominican Republic for the first few years of his career until he converted to pitcher in 2010 and was eventually placed on the 40-man roster.
In 2012, the Astros used de Leon as a starter for a portion of the season, a proposition that did not go well and was eventually scrapped. De Leon was starting to regain his effectiveness late in the season after being moved back to the bullpen. He was removed from the 40-man roster after the season and became a free agent, but recently re-signed with the team he's played for since 2006.

Minor League Recaps
Sunday's Results
Greeneville Astros 0 Princeton Rays 1
Let's call this what it was, a pitcher's duel—with an
emphasis on the plural. There were a
total of 8 pitchers used in the game by both teams and Greeneville used 4. Lance McCullers (0-1) got the start for the
Astros and after going 4 innings took the tough loss after allowing 1 run on 2
hits, walking 1 and striking out 2. Joseph Musgrove came on for the next 3 and
a third frames with just 4 hits and 6 Ks.
Even though there wasn't much going at the plate for Greeneville on
Sunday Carlos Correa (2X3, 2B, BB) and Ariel Ovando (2X4) both managed
multi-hit games. Correa collected his
12th double all year and the first since his Greenville call-up.
Tri-City ValleyCats 6 Staten Island Yankees 5
Tri-City was in control of this game almost the entire time
even though the score might suggest otherwise.
Jamaine Cotton worked an okay sixth inning but had an
uncharacteristically bumpy time after coming out for the seventh. Cotton ended up being charged with 4 runs
(3ER) on 2 hits, walking 4 and striking out 1.
Brady Rodgers (6-2), who started the game, pitched 5 innings, allowed 1
run on 3 hits, walked 1, struck out 3 and earned his sixth win of the year. Travis Ballew came on for the ninth and
earned his second save, giving up a lone hit.
M.P. Cokinos continued to swing the bat well Sunday, going 2 for 4 with
a double, triple, 2 RBI and a walk.
Preston Tucker was hot on his heels, batting 2 for 5 with a double and
his 5th homer of the season.
Lancaster JetHawks 3 San Jose Giants 2
Lancaster didn't get on the board until later in the game
Sunday, but when they did it forced the opposition's starting pitcher out of
the game. Coupled with the fact that
Lancaster pitching allowed no runs outside the second inning, it made for a
significant win on the road at Municipal Stadium. David Martinez (7-4) got the start and the
win, pitching seven strong innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, walking 1 and
striking out 5. Jorge De Leon picked up
his fourth save after coming on for the last out in the ninth, an inning that
saw 3 pitchers for Lancaster. De Leon
fanned the 1 batter he faced, moving his season K total to 52.
Springfield Cardinals 9 Corpus Christi Hooks 20
It's baseball 101. If
there's a chance the opponent might hang 9 runs on your team, bring 20 of your
own to the ballpark for good measure. The
Hooks scored 12 runs in the sixth inning but the offense didn't start
there. With 2 outs in the bottom of the
first, Jonathan Singleton and Drew Locke homered back-to-back to get Corpus
Christi on the board. Singleton would
homer again in the eighth inning, this time a 3-run shot to left center
field. Ben Orloff went 5 for 5 with a triple,
double and 4 RBIs. Austin Wates came
into the game in the sixth inning and ended up 3 for 3 with a double and 2
RBI. Alex Sogard (BS 2, 3-1) picked up
the blown save and the win after giving up a run on a hit in the sixth
inning. Matthew Heidenreich started the
game and through 5 and third was charged with 5 runs on 5 hits (3ER), K-ing
3.
In case your curious what the box looked like after a game
like this, here it is:
Sacramento River Cats 3 Oklahoma City RedHawks 1
The RedHawks offense was stifled a little on Sunday and they
went down for their ninth loss in a row.
Not stifled however, was Julio Daniel Martinez, who batted 4 for 5 with
a double. Overall, the RedHawks left 13
on the bases and the team RISP was 0 for 7.
Matt Downs (2X3) scored the lone run with a long ball over center field
as the first batter in the fourth inning.
Downs also drew a walk. Ross Seaton (0-1) took the loss but had a good
outing despite it. Seaton was charged
with 2 runs (1ER) on 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 3.
Player of The Day:
Ben Orloff is the man today for his work yesterday. Orloff went 5 for 5, which isn't nearly as
easy to do as it is to say. It also
marks 6 consecutive hits for Orloff and ties the team record for hits in a
game.
Pitcher of the Day:
I'm going to go slightly against convention and give the honor to Jorge
De Leon today. Here's why: the two Lancaster pitchers that preceded him
in the ninth inning Sunday both walked a batter, meaning the go ahead run was
already on base when De Leon came into the game with 2 outs. De Leon, unfazed, then finished it out for his team in style,
striking that last batter out swinging.
