Happy Minor League Opening Day!
This was fun, hope it happens more often this year.
Round Rock and New Orleans was postponed
Well, it didn't take long before we lost a game due to the weather.
This game was postponed due to rain. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Weather permitting, the Express will try again at 7:00 as Brady Rodgers will take the mound against Zac Gallen.
Corpus Christi 5, Amarillo 2
W- Jose Hernandez-Urquidy (1-0)
L- Adrian Morejón (0-1)
S- Colin McKee (1)
CC home runs: Osvaldo Duarte (1, 2-run in 5th)
The Hooks handed the Sod Poodles a loss in their inaugural game as they only needed one inning to score the runs they needed to win on Opening Night.
After getting flustered by Amarillo starter Adrian Morejón in the early going, the Hooks finally got to him in the 5th. Chas McCormick smacked a triple to start things off and he came home with the first run of the evening on an Aníbal Sierra single. One batter later, Osvaldo Duarte launched a home run. Later in the 5th, Granden Goetzman hit a two-run single with the bases loaded. Corpus actually loaded the bases twice in the inning but they couldn't get anything across the second time around.
New name, same results. José Urquidy, formerly known as José Luis Hernandez, walked one and struck out seven over five shutout innings. Gabriel Valdez allowed a two-run homer to Brad Zunica in the 7th inning, which was the Sod Poodles' only scoring play of the evening. In three innings, Valdez allowed one other hit, walked three, and struck out one. Colin McKee worked around a couple of walks in the 9th to seal the deal, striking out two.
Brett Adcock takes on Jesse Scholtens in game two. First pitch is at 7:15.
Fayetteville 15, Potomac 0
W- Carlos Sanabria (1-0)
L- Kyle Johnston (0-1)
Fayetteville home runs: Jake Adams (1, grand slam in 4th)
The Woodpeckers' first game was a rousing success, to say the least.
Cristian Javier was all over the place in his two innings; he didn't allow a hit and struck out four, but he also walked four and threw a wild pitch as well. Carlos Sanabria was the first man out of the Fayetteville bullpen. He also went two innings and was also all over the place as he walked two, struck out two, and hit two batters. Parker Mushinski allowed the lone Potomac hit, walked two, and struck out four in four innings of work. Tommy DeJuneas completed the shutout with a 1-2-3 9th inning.
Things got a little out of hand in the 4th inning as Fayetteville turned this one into a laugher with eight runs in the frame. Seth Beer was the only player in the lineup to go hitless, but he did drive in a run with the bases loaded in the 3rd and then drove in another run in the huge 4th inning by getting plunked with the bases loaded yet again.
Game two starts at 7:05 Eastern. J.P. France will take on Jackson Tetreault.
Quad Cities 9, Burlington 2 in 7 innings
W- Nivaldo Rodríguez (1-0)
L- José Soriano (0-1)
S- Shawn Dubin (1)
QC home runs: Ross Adolph (1, 2-run in 3rd)
The first two games of this series were moved to Burlington due to flooding in the Quad Cities. And this game ended up getting called early due to rain.
Oscar Campos reached on an error in the 2nd inning and then made his way to third thanks to a wild pitch and a passed ball. He wound up scoring the first run of the Astros' minor league season on a Jonathan Lacroix groundout. One inning later, Ross Adolph hit the first home run by an Astros minor league player in 2019 to bring in two runs. The Banditos opened things up in the 6th as Trey Dawson hit a two-run single with the bases loaded. Scott Schreiber scored on a wild pitch that was also ruled ball four to Adolph, and then Dawson wound up scoring on another wild pitch.
Nivaldo Rodriguez turned in a strong debut as he allowed just one hit, walked one, and struck out eight over five shutout frames. Shawn Dubin pitched the final two innings and allowed two runs on two hits, walked four, and struck out three.
Cody Deason will get the start in game two. First pitch is at 6:00.
