The Grizzlies had to settle for a split as they were edged by the Chihuahuas in the series finale. Fresno has split all three of their home series so far.

Both teams scored twice in the 2nd inning; Fresno's 2 came in the form of an RBI double from Jon Kemmer and a Nolan Fontana RBI single. Jon Singleton hit a sac fly in the 3rd that gave the Grizz a 3-2 lead. Colin Moran went 2-4 with a run scored.

The Grizzlies did threaten in the bottom of the 5th, but they left 2 runners in scoring position to end the inning, and Tony Kemp was on as the tying run in the 8th, but he too was stranded.

Tommy Shirley dropped his first decision of the year, as he allowed 4 runs on 9 hits and struck out 3 in 6 innings. Jordan Jankowski worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 7th, striking out 1, and Kevin Chapman allowed a hit and struck out 3 over 2 scoreless.

Tonight, the Grizzlies welcome Reno to town for a 4-game set. Brad Peacock will take on Archie Bradley in game 1; first pitch is at 6:35 Pacific.

The Hooks got on the board in the series as they got 2 in the top of the 7th to nip the Roughriders.

Keegan Yuhl went 5.1 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits (2 solo homers), walked 3, and struck out 6. Chris Cotton tagged in and got the win in relief; he walked 1 over 1.2 scoreless, and Aaron West shut the door with 2 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2.

Corpus couldn't get much going against a rehabbing Yu Darvish, but they got themselves going once he left. Chan-Jong Moon put the Hooks on the board with a solo shot in the 3rd. Danry Vásquez hit an RBI single in the 6th, then stole his way to 3rd. The big hit of the evening belonged to D.J. Fisher, who cracked 2-run double to put Corpus on top 4-3. Moon reached base in all 4 of his plate appearances; he finished 2-2 with a stolen base (2), 2 walks, and 2 runs scored.

Joe Musgrove will start the series finale; he'll face Sam Wolff at 7:05.

Lake Elsinore 3, Lancaster 2

The JetHawks got 2 in the 8th to make it a 1-run game, but they weren't able to extend the game.

Nick Tanielu drove in those 2 runs in the 8th with a single. He went 2-3 and was the only player on either side to have a multi-hit game.

Scott Weathersby went 4.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Yeyfry Del Rosario followed with 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 4.

Lancaster will now start a 4-game series with Inland Empire and their eardrum-breaking train horn. In game 1, Elieser Hernandez will take on Tyler Carpenter. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

West Michigan 3, Quad Cities 2

The Banditos had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th and they managed to make it a 1-run game, but the Whitecaps were just able to escape with game 1 of the twinbill.

Three 1-out singles from Brooks Marlow, Aaron Mizell, and Daz Cameron loaded the bases for Quad Cities in the 7th. Marlon Avea went down on strikes for the 2nd out, but Tony Nuñez and Johnny Sewald both drew walks to bring in 2 runs. Unfortunately, the threat ended when Osvaldo Duarte was called out on strikes to end the game. Daz finished 2-3.

In his season debut, Justin Ferrell went 4.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3. Zac Person allowed 2 hits and struck out 4 over 2.1 scoreless.

The rain came again and wiped out game 2 of the doubleheader. Game 2 will not be made up.

Quad Cities will now hit the road for 6 games; their first stop is Midland, Michigan. They'll be visiting the Great Lakes Loons for 3 starting tonight at 6:05. Albert Abreu will get the start in game 1, and he'll take on Isaac Anderson.

- Cotton and West came out with fine relief outings as they picked up Keegan Yuhl and sealed the win for the Hooks.

D.J. Fisher, OF, Corpus Christi: Go-ahead 2-RBI 2B in 7th
- Despite the unattractive .218 average, Fisher is still sporting a .774 OPS, which means that he's getting on base (16 BB, .351 OBP) and making some solid contact (9 XBH). Getting his bat going would be a massive boost to a Hooks offense that is still searching for a spark while Alex Bregman is on the shelf.

A pretty forgettable last couple of days on the farm.

Monday: Fresno 4, Reno 2

Fresno home runs: Preston Tucker (8, solo in 5th)

Another big night for Preston Tucker, who is sending baseballs out of ballparks with quite a bit of regularity. He finished 3-4 and opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st, then in the 5th, he bashed his organization-leading 8th homer of the year. The Grizz got 2 in the 4th inning on a Max Stassi RBI single and a sac fly from Nolan Fontana.

Jake Buchanan went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 9 hits (solo homer) and struck out 2. Darin Downs struck out 2 over 1.2 near-perfect frames; he hit a batter. Jordan Jankowski got the final out of the 7th and the first out of the 8th inning. He allowed a hit, walked 1, struck out 1, and uncorked a wild pitch. Despite facing a bases-loaded situation in the 8th, Kevin Chapman was able to seal the win as he walked 1 and struck out 2.

Tuesday: Reno 3, Fresno 2

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies threatened in the bottom of the 9th as they got some traffic on the basepaths, but.... no cigar. They were foiled in their bid to sweep the series.

Their 2 runs came in the 5th inning on a Preston Tucker sac fly and a Domingo Santana RBI triple. Ronald Torreyes led off the bottom of the 9th with a double, but he was thrown out at home trying to score the tying run on a Nolan Fontana fielder's choice. Alex Presley and Preston Tucker walked to load the bases, but sadly, Jon Singleton flied out to end the game.

Dan Straily pitched 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Richard Rodriguez struck out 2 over 3 perfect frames, and James Hoyt struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Fresno has a day off as they head up to Tacoma; they'll finish up April and begin May there.

Monday: Midland 9, Corpus Christi 8

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks walked off with the loss as Carson Blair took Kent Emanuel deep to tie the game at 8, and Matt Olson hit a sac fly to bring home Chad Oberacker with the winning run.

Carlos Correa got things started when he cracked an RBI triple in the 1st inning. He drove in another run with a single in the 3rd inning. Two batters later, Tyler White added a 2-run single. Leo Heras hit an RBI single in the 4th. After the Rockhounds took a 7-5 lead into the 7th inning, Corpus went back to work as Conrad Gregor made it a 1-run game with an RBI double, and then in the 8th, they took the lead thanks to a Tony Kemp RBI groundout and a Colin Moran RBI double.

Kemp went 1-3 with the RBI groundout, 2 walks, and scored 3 times. Moran, who stretched his hitting streak to 5 games, finished 3-5 with 2 doubles and a run scored; he's ripped 5 doubles during that streak. Tyler White finished 2-4, and Telvin Nash went 2-3 with a run scored.

Aaron West went 5 innings and allowed 5 runs, all on 3 home runs; he allowed 2 solo homers and was taken deep for a 3-run homer. He also allowed 4 other hits and struck out 3. Kent Emanuel tagged in for 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits (solo homer), walking 2, and striking out 1. Mitch Lambson got 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, allowing a hit and walking 1.

Tuesday: Midland 8, Corpus Christi 4

CC home runs: Carlos Correa (5, solo in 8th)

Rough day for Hooks pitchers, who walked 7 and allowed 13 hits. They also gave up 8 runs.

The Hooks got on the board first with a Conrad Gregor sac fly in the 1st. Unfortunately, they would not score again until the 8th; in between, Midland scored 7 runs. Carlos Correa finished 2-2 with a double and a solo homer in the 8th inning. Corpus got 2 more in the 9th on an RBI double from Telvin Nash and an RBI single from Teoscar Hernandez. Tyler Heineman went 2-4. Correa's 2-2 day raised his average to an even .400. Be still, my heart.

Kyle Westwood allowed 4 runs on 10 hits and walked 2 over 4.1 innings. Jonas Dufek tagged in for 2.1 innings; he allowed 3 runs on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2. He had all the strikeouts for the Hooks in this game. Angel Báez pitched 1.1 innings and walked 2; the only hit and run he allowed came off a solo homer from Colin Walsh in the 8th.

Mark Appel takes the hill in game 3 of this series; he'll take on Jake Sanchez at 6:30.

Tuesday: Rancho Cucamonga 10, Lancaster 5

Lancaster home runs: Jack Mayfield (1, solo in 2nd)

In this battle for first place, the Quakes fired the first shot as they doubled up the JetHawks.

Jack Mayfield's first homer of the year put Lancaster on the scoreboard in the 2nd and tied the game at 1. Unfortunately, that would be the only run they would score until the 7th, as the Quakes built up a 9-1 lead on the strength of a 6-run 6th inning. In the 7th, though, the JetHawks got a bases-clearing triple from Chan-Jong Moon, who ended up scoring himself on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, that outburst wouldn't be enough in this one. Moon and J.D. Davis finished with 2 hits apiece.

Evan Grills went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 3. Tyler Brunnemann worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 5th, striking out 2. Troy Scribner tagged in for 3 innings and allowed 7 runs on 6 hits (5 singles and a solo homer), walked 3, and struck out 3. Gonzalo Sañudo walked 1 in a scoreless 9th.

In game 2, Blaine Sims will face Jeff Brigham at 6:30 Pacific.


Tuesday: Cedar Rapids 1, Quad Cities 0 in 11 innings

Well, that stunk...

Joe Musgrove probably would've liked to have that 11th inning back as the first 3 Kernels to bat in the inning reached base on him; 2 of them reached on errors that he committed, and Cedar Rapids ended up getting the only run (which was unearned) of the game off of him on a sac fly. That was a tough end to an otherwise fine outing for Musgrove, who went 6 innings and allowed 4 hits while striking out 1. Bryan Radziewski was absolutely stellar in his start as he allowed just 2 hits and struck out 4 over 5 shutout innings.

The River Bandits outhit Cedar Rapids 9-6, but they were unable to get a run across. Mott Hyde went 3-5 with a double, while Sean McMullen finished 2-4 with a triple.

In game 2 of this series, Dan Mengden will take on Mat Batts at 7.

Once again, Fresno got some runs late, only to see Salt Lake walk off with a win. Joe Sclafani's error allowed Alfredo Marte to score the winning run in the 9th.

They were kept off the scoreboard until the top of the 9th, when L.J. Hoes ripped an RBI double to make it a 1-run game, one of his 5 hits on the night. After Jon Singleton was intentionally walked to load the bases and Matt Duffy became a strikeout victim, Preston Tucker tied the game at 2 with an RBI single. Unfortunately, Hoes was thrown out at home trying to score the go-ahead run.

Dan Straily went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Richard Rodriguez was the first man out; he allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 3 innings of relief. Kevin Chapman was saddled with the loss; the walk-off run was unearned. He allowed 2 hits and struck out 1 in 1.2 innings.

In tonight's game, Alex White takes the mound. First pitch is at 5:35 Pacific.

Corpus Christi was off

The JetHawks only scored in 1 inning, but that was enough for them to get the win. All 5 of their runs came in the 6th inning, and their lead held up despite allowing 2 runs in the 8th.

Troy Scribner was awesome in his 5 innings; he allowed a run on a wild pitch/strikeout, walked 1, and struck out 9. The only hit he allowed was a single to Tyler Ogle to lead off the 2nd. Evan Grills tagged in for 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, walking 3, and striking out 1. Chris Cotton closed it out, striking out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Brian Holberton kicked things off in that big 6th inning with a single. Jack Mayfield followed by reaching on an error on a force out attempt, and they both advanced a base on a Brett Phillips sac bunt. Chan-Jong Moon tied the game with an RBI single. After J.D. Davis struck out for the 2nd out, A.J. Reed put Lancaster ahead with a 2-run double. Chase McDonald delivered the haymaker in the form of a 2-run home run, his 4th of the campaign. Moon finished 2-4.

The JetHawks return to The Hangar tonight as they welcome the Modesto Nuts for a 4-game set. Blaine Sims will take on Harrison Musgrave at 6:30 Pacific.

Quad Cities 6, Peoria 2

QC home runs: Jake Nottingham (3, 2-run in 2nd), Ryan Bottger (1, solo in 4th), Jorge Martinez (2, 2-run in 5th)

The Banditos busted out the heavy artillery in this matinee as 5 of their 6 runs came off of the three home runs you see above. Alex Hernandez hit a double in the 6th for the only non-home run RBI. Kristian Trompiz finished 2-4 with a run scored; he's now on a 5-game hitting streak, and it's also the 3rd consecutive game in which he's recorded 2 hits. Mott Hyde went 0-2, but he drew 2 walks and scored 2 runs.

Joe Musgrove turned in another fine performance on the mound; he threw 5.2 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9, which tied a career-high he set last July 16 against Aberdeen. The two relievers, Keegan Yuhl and Ryan Thompson, finished it off with 3.1 perfect frames. Yuhl struck out 1 in 1.1, and The Closer fanned 2 in 2.

Quad Cities looks for the sweep as Austin Chrismon takes on Daniel Poncedeleon at 7.

Signed as a NDFA from South Korea in 2009, Moon split his 2014 season between Quad Cities and Lancaster. In 127 games, he hit .286/.341/.398 with 18 doubles, 10 triples, six home runs, 60 RBI and 35 stolen bases.

Two former Astros also celebrate today ~

LHP Danny Coombs (73)
Signed as an amateur free agent by the Colt .45's prior to the 1963 season, Coombs spent parts of seven seasons playing for Houston. In 90 appearances, he was 8-7 with a 4.22 ERA and a 1.551 WHIP. His best season for Houston was 1968 when he went 4-3 in 40 appearances (2 starts) with a 3.28 ERA. In 1970 he was used primarily as a starter for the Padres, compiling a 10-14 record with a 3.30 ERA. 1971 was his final year in the major leagues.

1B Lee "Big Bopper" May (72)
According to Baseball-Reference, here is how May came to Houston and how he left Houston:

• November 29, 1971: Traded by the Cincinnati Reds with Tommy Helms and Jimmy Stewart to the Houston Astros for Ed Armbrister, Jack Billingham, Cesar Geronimo, Denis Menke and Joe Morgan.
• December 3, 1974: Traded by the Houston Astros with Jay Schlueter to the Baltimore Orioles for Rob Andrews and Enos Cabell.

In between, he played in 448 games for Houston, hitting .274/.317/.471 with 81 doubles, five triples and 81 home runs and one All-Star appearance. All told, May played in 2071 games over 18 seasons for four teams, hitting 354 home runs and making three All-Star appearances.

Welp, the RedHawks were held to just 3 singles. L.J. Hoes had 2 of them, and Austin Wates had the other.

Rudy Owens had an excellent outing as he allowed just 4 hits and struck out 7 over 6.2 shutout innings. The Storm Chasers got to Josh Zeid for 1 in the 8th; he allowed 2 hits and walked 1. Omaha got 1 more in the 9th off Kevin Chapman; that run was unearned. Chapman allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 1.

Game 3 of this series has David Martinez taking on Ryan Verdugo. First pitch is at 7:05.

Arkansas 2, Corpus Christi 0

The Hooks bats were silenced in this one; they were also held to 3 singles. Delino DeShields, Joe Sclafani, and Chris Epps had 1 each. Sclafani has a nice little 5-game hitting streak going.

Brady Rodgers just can't seem to buy a break. He dropped his 6th straight decision despite pitching solidly. Rodgers got dinged by a solo homer from Zach Zaneski in the 5th. He allowed 2 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Travis Ballew went 2 innings and allowed a run on a single (the only hit he allowed), walked 2, and struck out 1. Andrew Robinson struck out 2 over 2 perfect innings.

David Rollins will get the start in the rubber game of this series; he'll face Michael Roth at 7:10.

Lancaster 6, Lake Elsinore 2

Lancaster home runs: Carlos Correa (5, 3-run in 7th)

The JetHawks busted this one open with a 4-run 7th inning. 3 of those 4 came off a ball that Carlos Correa just absolutely devastated. Lancaster and Lake Elsinore are now tied at the top of the California League South.

Kent Emanuel cruised through 5 innings; he allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 4, and his outing only required 55 pitches. Lance McCullers pitched the final 4 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 6.

The top three of Tony Kemp, Ruben Sosa, and Correa just terrorized Lake Elsinore's pitchers; they had 8 of the JetHawks' 11 hits in this game. Kemp had 2, while Sosa and Correa had 3 each. 2012's #1 opened up the scoring with an RBI ground-rule double in the top of the 1st. Tony Kemp led off the 5th with a single, moved to 3rd on a Ruben Sosa single, and scored Lancaster's 2nd run on a passed ball. Before Correa's blast in the 7th, Ruben Sosa hit an RBI single; Jordan Scott noticed Hunter Renfroe lazily tossing a ball back into the infield and took advantage. One batter later, Correa crushed that poor, poor ball. In his Lancaster debut, Conrad Gregor went 2-4.

The JetHawks will look for the sweep as they send out Chris Devenski. He'll take on Colin Rea at 7:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 9, Beloit 5

W- Pat Christensen (3-1)

QC home runs: Chase McDonald (2, 2-run in 5th), Ronnie Mitchell (5, solo in 7th)

Quad Cities got this series started off on the right foot as they went on a 6-3 run between the 4th-7th innings to take control. Their final 5 runs were unanswered.

The Bandits more than lived up to their name, as they swiped 8 bases without getting caught. 4 of those belonged to Chan-Jong Moon, who now has 23 on the season. Also joining in on Moon's spree were Brett Booth (1), Ronnie Mitchell (3), Jon Kemmer (2), and Thomas Lindauer (2).

Moon, who went 3-5 with a run scored, put QC on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1st. The River Bandits would score 3 in the inning to answer Beloit's 2 in the top of the inning. Moon scored on Brett Phillips' single, and Phillips came home on a sac fly from Chase McDonald. Lindauer hit an RBI double in the 4th. After the Snappers scored 3 in the top of the 5th to take a 5-4 lead, the Bandits responded with 3 of their own to retake the lead. 2 of those 3 came on a 2-run homer from Chase McDonald (2), and the other was a sac fly from Mitchell. Phillips, who went 2-4 with a couple of runs scored, hit a sac fly in the 6th, and Mitchell capped off a 3-3 night by hitting a solo shot (5) in the 7th.

Walter went 2 innings and allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 2.

As part of a league-wide off day in the Pacific Coast League. Tonight, they'll begin a 4-game series at home against Nashville at 7:05. Mike Foltynewicz and Rudy Owens will start the opener against Ariel Peña.

The Hooks were held in check as they couldn't muster up anything in support of Luis Cruz, who had a nice outing. He went 6 innings and the only blemish on his line was a solo homer from Jefry Marte in the 5th. Cruz gave up 3 other hits and struck out 3 in his outing. R.J. Alaniz, who was making his season debut, pitched the final 3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2.

Nolan Fontana's RBI double in the 8th accounted for the lone Hooks run and the lone Hooks extra-base hit. Leo Heras went 2-4.

Tommy Shirley and Matt Heidenreich will be the pairing for the series finale, and they will face Andrew Werner at 7:10.

The JetHawks walked off with a loss a half-inning after they spoiled a situation with 2 runners in scoring position and no outs.

Mark Appel, who is well below-form at the moment, labored through 2.1 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Juan Minaya was the first reliever out of the bullpen and struck out 2 over 1.2 perfect innings. Mitch Lambson worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 5th. Mike Hauschild came in to piggyback and threw 4 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 3. Tyson Perez was next up, and he went 2.1 innings and allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 3. He got the loss, as J.D. Osborne allowed one of the 2 runners he inherited to score, as Sherman Johnson delivered the game-winning single with 1 out in the 12th. Osborne faced 2 66ers and did not retire either of them.

Brandon Meredith drew a 1-out walk in the 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a Danry Vasquez single, and scored Lancaster's first run on a sac fly from Carlos Perdomo. The JetHawks tied the game with a pair of RBI singles from Meredith and Carlos Correa in the 6th. Roberto Peña went 3-4 with a double, and Rio Ruiz was 2-6 with a double.

In the series finale, Kyle Westwood and Vince Velasquez will take on Nate Smith at 7:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 7, Clinton 1

The River Bandits have put up 15, 11, and now 16 hits in the first 3 games of this series. The game was tied at 1 after the 1st inning, but QC scored the final 6 runs to win handily. Everyone in the lineup had a hit except for Jon Kemmer, who went 0-5 with a K.

Tanner Mathis led off the game with a triple and Chan-Jong Moon opened the scoring with an RBI single one batter later. Moon, who finished 4-5, hit a triple of his own in the 3rd and wound up scoring on the play, thanks to an error. Jobduan Morales went 3-3, and all of his hits were doubles. 2 of those (in the 4th and 7th) resulted in an RBI, and he also walked twice. Moon added a 2-run single in the 6th, and Chase McDonald finished 2-4 with an RBI single in the 8th. Conrad Gregor also had a nice night at the plate as he went 3-5 with a double. 3 straight multi-hit games for Gregor has raised his average to an even .300.

Chris Lee went 4 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits and struck out 2. Andrew Thurman also went 4 innings as he got the victory; he allowed a hit and struck out 5. And finally, Albert Minnis struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th. Thurman has really turned it up as of late; this was another outstanding stint on the mound after two rough ones to open the season.

In the series finale, Kent Emanuel and Jandel Gustave will take on Jake Zokan. First pitch is at 6:30.

SATURDAY'S RESULTS

DSL  Astros over DSL Dodgers 4-2
RHP Juan Hernandez got the start, going four innings and allowing a run, and was followed by RHP Rayderson Chevalier (W, 1-0) who allowed another run over his three innings. RHP Victor Mesa got his second save in a two-inning save opportunity as he allowed only two hits with one strikeout. PH Tomas de la Cruz was the hero of the day with a two run single in the seventh that put the Astros on top for good.

New Orleans over Oklahoma City 12-7
This one was much closer than it sounded despite four errors contributing to four of six runs allowed by Dallas Keuchel and Enerio del Rosario to be unearned. The bullpen was a bit dicey all evening, but in a rare implosion for Jose Valdez who has been having a very good year, the Redhawks' 7-6 lead turned into a 12-7 deficit in the ninth as Valdez allowed six runs with two outs. Sergio Perez came in to finally shoot the horse and get it out of its misery. Jimmy Paredes was on fire with a four-for-six night with two RBIs; Angel Sanchez was three-for-five with an RBI; Brad Snyder was two-for-four with two RBIs; and Brandon Barnes and J.B. Shuck had two hits as well. Brandon Barnes is hitting .415 since the callup.

Lexington over Greensboro 4-1 in 10 innings
A pitcher's duel with an unlikely hero gave the Legends their fourth win in a row. Luis Ordosgoitti, newly off the DL, pitched five innings and allowed only one run on five hits and a walk. He was followed by four solid innings from Evan Grills (W, 2-0). Dayan Diaz pitched the tenth inning for his fifth save. Until the tenth inning, Lexington's only run was 1B Zach Johnson's solo home run (his ninth of the season) which, by the way, gives him his 56th RBI of the season. The unlikely hero of the night, though, was none other than SS Chan Moon who picked this particular moment to hit the second home run of his entire career, a three run moon shot (pun intended).

Lancaster over Inland Empire 4-2
RJ Alaniz (W, 6-2) pitched eight innings of shut out ball on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Jason Chowning struggled to get through the ninth, allowing two runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning before giving way to Kirk Clark (S, 7) to get the final out. Telvin Nash clubbed his 17th home run of the season, but also added another two strikeouts to his already prodigious total. Kike Hernandez, Erik Castro and Jonathan Meyer all had two hit nights with doubles from Castro, Meyer and Chris Epps.

GAME OF THE DAY
Corpus Christi over Midland 6-5

What went right: Jonathan Villar's speed, Drew Locke's htting and Arecenio Leon's lockdown relief.

It was a wild one at Whataburger with the lead changing hands four times. Jarred Cosart gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks with six strikeouts over six innings. I would not call Cosart a "thrower" like some other unnamed individual <cough*Fred Nelson*cough>, but he does have issues commanding the fast ball. In the second inning he was frankly lucky to have only given up two runs as he missed location with the fast ball time and again and had to rely on his change up to bail him out. His command got better as the game progressed, but as impressive as a 98 mph fast ball is (and he did hit that on Saturday), you have to have good command or the Jeremy Barfields of the world are going to smoke that 97 mph heater, just like he did last night. Cosart was followed by Kevin Chapman (one walk and two strikeouts in an inning pitched) and Arcenio Leon (W, 1-0) who did a beautiful job keeping Midland in check with his two hitless, scoreless innings of relief.

On the offensive side, it was the Jonathan Villar and Drew Locke show. Villar had three hits and four stolen bases (28 for the season) and scored twice. Drew Locke was three-for-five in his triumphant return to the Hooks, including a two run 405' blast to left field. And both Villar and Locke were factors in the ninth inning rally as Villar singled and scored the tying run and Locke advanced Jose Martinez to third on a ground out which put Martinez in position to score the winning run on a wild pitch. It was a fun game to be a part of, particularly since it put the Hooks back at .500.

I haven't heard anything about the severity of Jio's injury yet, but he was being checked out in Houston on Tuesday.
