The Grizzlies ended their longest roadtrip of the season on a positive note, staving off a rally from the Chihuahuas to earn a split in the series.

Brady Rodgers went 6 innings and allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 5. Chris Cotton was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen; he allowed a run on a groundout, a triple, and struck out 1 in the 7th inning. Albert Minnis recorded 2 outs in the 8th; he allowed a run on a sac fly, 2 hits, and struck out 1. Brendan McCurry pitched the final 1.1 innings to get the save; he allowed a run on a sac fly, 3 hits, and struck out 3.

Fresno scored 2 runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and the 4th innings. Their 2 in the 2nd came courtesy of a Teoscar Hernandez double. Max Stassi drew a bases-loaded walk and Jon Singleton added a sac fly in the 3rd, and in the 4th, Teoscar scored on an error, and D.J. Fisher hit an RBI single. Fisher hit another RBI single in the 6th, and one batter later, Jon Kemmer launched a 3-run home run that effectively turned out to be the difference in this game.

Kemmer (2B, 3-R HR) and Nolan Fontana (2 R, SB) finished with 3 hits apiece, while Fisher (2 RBI, R) and Teoscar (2B, 2 RBI, R) both finished 2-5.

The Grizzlies have today off; they'll start a 4-game series with the Iowa Cubs on Friday.

Corpus Christi 5, Northwest Arkansas 4

The Hooks drew even in the series thanks to a 4-run 2nd inning and 3.1 scoreless innings from the bullpen.

Kent Emanuel went 5.2 innings and allowed 4 runs on 9 hits and struck out 1. Kevin Comer allowed 2 hits and fanned 2 over 2.1 scoreless, and Ryan Thompson worked around a hit to close out the game.

James Ramsay opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 2nd. They weren't done just yet; Chase McDonald and Alejandro Garcia followed with singles to load the bases, and Mott Hyde promptly cleared them with a double. Hyde got thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple, but the damage was done. Garrett Stubbs drew a bases-loaded walk in the 4th. Hyde went 2-3 with the big double, while Garcia finished 3-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Yulieski Gurriel went 1-4; he started at third base and played 7 innings.

In the rubber game of this series, Cy Sneed will face Josh Staumont. First pitch is at 7:05.

Inland Empire 4, Lancaster 2

The JetHawks' bats went quiet and they couldn't muster up a response to a 3-run 1st inning from the 66ers.

Drew Ferguson opened the scoring with an RBI infield single in the 1st inning. Jamie Ritchie hit a single in the 6th, and an error on the play allowed Aaron Mizell to score. Bobby Boyd, who scored the first run of the evening, had a double, which was Lancaster's only extra-base hit of the night.

Rogelio Armenteros went 6.2 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 7. Ryan Deemes allowed a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings.

The series finale is at 7:05 Pacific. Lancaster's starter is TBA; whoever he is, he'll take on Jake Jewell.

Quad Cities was off

The River Bandits will begin a 4-game series in Peoria tonight at 7:00. Matt Bower gets the start.

Tri-City and Lowell was postponed

Due to rain. A doubleheader is scheduled for today, with game 1 starting at 4:05 Eastern. Enrique Chavez (game 1) and Edgardo Sandoval (game 2) will start for Tri-City today.

Johnson City 7, Greeneville 3

The Cardinals took sole possession of the division lead from the Appy Astros by taking the opener of this crucial series.

Jorge Guzman went 4.1 innings and allowed 5 runs (3 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 8 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Carlos Sanabria tagged in for 3.2 innings and allowed 2 runs, both of which scored on a home run. He allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 4. Lucas Williams threw a 1-2-3 9th inning,

Stijn van der Meer hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning. Frankeny Fernandez scored on an error in the 6th, and Oscar Campos scored on a wild pitch in the 9th.

Colin McKee will start game 2 of this this series. He'll face Levi MaVorhis at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Mets 10, GCL Astros 3 in 6 innings

The Kissimmee Stros got buried by a 10-0 deficit in a game that was shortened by rain.

Their 3 runs came in the 4th inning and all of them scored on a triple from Joan Mauricio.

Hansel Paulino and Edwin Fidel both bore the brunt of the Mets' assault in the first 2 innings. I'll leave it at that. Ian Hardman pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 2. Leovanny Rodriguez got 2 outs in the 6th and allowed a hit and walked 1 before play was halted.

This game was tied at 3 when it was suspended due to rain.

The Blue team scored 2 runs in the 7th on an RBI single from Enmanuel Valdez and a sac fly from Angel De Leon. They finished this game with just 4 hits.

Jesus Bernaez came on after play resumed, and he allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5. Angel Matos allowed 2 hits in a scoreless 9th.

The regularly scheduled game ended up getting suspended by rain as well, with the Blue team leading 3-2. Anibal Sierra's 3-run homer, his 2nd, is currently the only scoring play for the Blue team, but it gave them the lead.

Jose Bravo went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 7 hits and fanned 4.

The Grizzlies had the only crooked-numbered inning in this game, and that turned out to be the difference.

Tony Kemp opened the scoring with a 2-run single in the 2nd, and Jon Kemmer led off the 3rd inning with a home run. Kemmer finished 3-4 on the night.

César Valdez went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 9 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. Jandel Gustave struck out 2 over 2 scoreless innings, and Jordan Jankowski worked around a hit to earn the save.

Edison Frias will face Josh Zeid in the series finale. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 3, Midland 2 in 11 innings

The Hooks scored a run in the top of the 10th inning to break a 1-1 tie. The Hounds managed to respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the 10th, but Corpus re-took the lead in the 11th and held on for the win.

Ramon Laureano led off the game with a home run. This would be the Hooks' only run until the 10th inning, when Mott Hyde scored on an error following a bunt single from Tony Nuñez. Hyde finished 3-5 and hit an RBI single in the 11th that gave the Hooks a 3-2 lead.

Cy Sneed has had a rough go of it in the second half after a fine first half, but it appears that he's getting himself back in the saddle. In 6 innings, he allowed an unearned run on 5 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3. Kevin Comer and Ryan Thompson both followed with 2 innings out of the bullpen; Comer allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2, while Thompson allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Eric Peterson struck out 2 in a scoreless 11th to get the save.

In game 3 of this series, Trent Thornton will face Corey Walter. First pitch is at 7:00.

Lancaster 13, Modesto 8

The JetHawks used a 5-run 8th inning to put this game out of reach.

Trent Woodward started things off with a bang in the form of a 2-run home run in the 1st inning. Lancaster added 2 more runs in the 3rd on a single from Drew Ferguson. Johnny Sewald launched a home run to lead off the bottom of the 5th, and Ferguson led off the 6th by adding a solo homer to his ledger. Later in the inning, Brooks Marlow whacked a 2-run home run, his second in as many nights. In the 8th, Bobby Boyd drew a bases-loaded walk. Osvaldo Duarte followed by grounding into a double play, but Keach Ballard was able to score. Ferguson capped off a huge game by sending a Colin Welmon pitch into the Antelope Valley night for a 3-run home run.

Everyone in the starting 9+1 reached base for the JetHawks. Ferguson finished 3-5, and all three of his hits resulted in runs for the JetHawks. Marlow (2-R HR, 2 R) and Sewald (solo HR) both finished with 2 hits in the game. In addition to his 2-run shot, Woodward drew 3 walks and scored 2 more times.

Akeem Bostick went 6 innings and allowed 7 runs on 10 hits, walked 5, and struck out 3. Scott Weathersby pitched the final 3 innings, and the one run he allowed came on a solo homer hit by Josh Fuentes in the 9th. Weathersby allowed 4 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 6.

The JetHawks and Nuts will continue their series at 6:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 11, Peoria 4

QC home runs: Kyle Tucker (6, solo in 1st)

The Banditos used three big innings to take their series with the Chiefs.

Myles Straw singled to lead off the game and scored the first run of the game on a triple from Ryne Birk. Dex McCall brought Birk in with a sac fly, and Kyle Tucker capped off the 1st inning with a solo homer. Birk cleared the bases with a double in the 4th.

In the 6th, Straw hit an RBI single, and Birk brought him home with a single. Stephen Wrenn followed by drawing a walk, and McCall proceeded to rip a 2-run double. Straw drove in Quad Cities' final run of the evening with a triple in the 9th inning.

Straw (2 RBI, 3 R) and Birk (5 RBI, 2 R) both finished a home run shy of the cycle, while McCall went 2-3 with 3 RBI.

Framber Valdez had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 6 hits, walking 2, and striking out 3. Chris Murphy allowed a run on 4 hits and struck out 3 in 3 innings for the save.

The River Bandits are back home tonight, where they'll start a 4-game series with Burlington at 6:00. Hector Perez will face Austin Robichaux.

Tri-City 5, Aberdeen 4

More like Alex De Goat-i, am I right? With the ValleyCats down to their final out, Alex De Goti snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a go-ahead 3-run home run.

The leadoff and #9 hitters provided the offense for Tri-City. Rodrigo Ayarza, who was at the top, finished 3-5 with a pair of RBI singles. De Goti also finished with 3 hits; the third proved to be the difference in this game.

Makay Nelson allowed 4 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 4 innings. Carlos Sierra was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen, and he struck out the side in order in the 5th inning. Edgardo Sandoval tagged in for 3 innings and allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 4. Nick Hernandez worked around a hit to get the save, striking out 2.

Tonight, the ValleyCats will welcome the Brooklyn Cyclones to The Joe. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Bristol 10, Greeneville 6 in 10 innings

Greeneville home runs: Luis Payano (4, solo in 10th)

The Appy Astros couldn't hold a 4-0 lead, and then it all unraveled on them in the first extra frame.

Greeneville opened up the scoring with 3 in the first inning: Abraham Toro hit a sac fly, and Ray Henderson smacked a 2-run double. Jonathan Arauz hit an RBI single in the 4th, and Luis Payano pulled a run back in the 10th with a solo homer, but the damage was done.

Arauz finished 4-6 with a run scored from the top of the order. Stijin van der Meer went 3-6 with a double and scored a run. Henderson (2B, 2 RBI) and Payano (solo HR, 2 R) had 2 hits apiece.

The one run that Carlos Sanabria allowed in his 6 innings came on a solo homer hit by Julio De La Cruz in the 5th. Sanabria allowed two other hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Devin Raftery pitched 3 innings and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (3-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 3. Devon Carr bore the brunt of Bristol's assault in the 10th; he allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1.

Fresno 3, Albuquerque 1

Fresno home runs: Matt Duffy (6, solo in 8th)

The Tacos took the first of 4 from the Isotopes behind a strong pitching performance from Brad Peacock.

Peacock pitched 8 innings and allowed an unearned run on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. Kevin Chapman retired the only man he faced in the 9th, and Jordan Jankowski recorded the final two outs of the game to get the save.

A.J. Reed opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st, and Tyler White drove in another run with a groundout later in the inning. Matt Duffy provided a crucial insurance run in the 8th inning with his solo home run. Reed finished 2-4 with a double, and Colin Moran finished 2-4 as well.

César Valdez will start game 2 of this series. He will face Harrison Musgrave at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 5, San Antonio 1

W- Evan Grills (2-1, 5-2 season)
L- Aaron Northcraft (1-1)

CC home runs: None,

The Hooks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the 1st inning, and Evan Grills and two relievers handcuffed the Missions offense.

Grills pitched 6 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. In his Texas League debut, Ryan Thompson walked 1 and struck out 3 over 2 scoreless innings, and Eric Peterson worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 9th.

Corpus Christi immediately threatened when they loaded the bases to begin the game; Teoscar Hernandez walked, stole 2nd base, and advanced to 3rd on a Mott Hyde single. D.J. Fisher joined them on the bases after getting hit by a pitch. J.D. Davis drove in the first run of the evening with an RBI single. Nick Tanielu followed with an RBI single of his own, and then Fisher scored on a wild pitch. Tanielu eventually scored on an error that allowed Alfredo Gonzalez to reach base safely. Hyde, who finished 3-5, ripped an RBI double in the top of the 9th to drive in the final run of the evening. Davis finished 2-5, while Hernandez walked twice and stole 2 bases to give him 28 on the season. Teoscar now leads the Astros organization in stolen bases.

The Hooks will look to complete the sweep today as Edison Frias gets the start. He'll take on Kyle Lloyd at 11:05 AM.

California/Carolina League All-Star Game

Bobby Boyd got the start in center field for the California League All-Stars; he tripled in the 4th inning and scored the California League's first run on a C.J. Hinojosa groundout. Garrett Stubbs entered in the 6th inning and caught the remainder of the game. The California League attempted to mount a rally in the bottom of the 9th, and Stubbs chipped in with an RBI double. However, their comeback bid fell short, as the Carolina League All-Stars emerged victorious, 6-4.

Lancaster returns to action tomorrow by welcoming Lake Elsinore to The Hangar for a 4-game series.

Midwest League All-Star Game

Kevin McCanna got the final two outs of the 4th inning, one via strikeout, but not before he allowed a couple of inherited runners to score. The East All-Stars came out on top, 11-10.

The River Bandits will kick off the 2nd half of their season tomorrow as they begin a 4-game series in Wisconsin.

Brooklyn 8, Tri-City 3

TC home runs: Randy César (1, solo in 2nd), Ronnie Dawson (1, solo in 3rd)

The ValleyCats led 3-0 after 3 innings, but the Cyclones finished this game on an 8-0 run to take the series.

Stephen Wrenn tripled to lead off the game and scored on a Marcos Almonte groundout. Tri-City's other two runs came on solo homers from Randy César in the 2nd and Ronnie Dawson in the 3rd. Rodrigo Ayarza finished 2-4.

Sebastian Kessay pitched 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Framber Valdez threw 2 scoreless innings, but the wheels fell off for him in the 8th inning. Ultimately, Valdez pitched 2.2 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. Edgardo Sandoval allowed 1 hit and struck out 1 in 1.1 innings.

The ValleyCats are back home tonight, where they'll begin a 3-game series with Vermont. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

DSL Astros Blue 2, DSL Dodgers2 0 through 4.5 innings

This game was suspended with 2 outs in the top of the 5th due to rain. Orlando Marquez opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 4th, and Ronny Jimenez hit an RBI single of his own in the 5th inning.

Juan Corniel struck out 4 over 4 perfect innings.

I presume that they'll finish this game and then play the regularly scheduled game today, weather permitting.

DSL Astros Orange 7, DSL Phillies2 4

The Orange team seized control of this game with a 6-run 4th inning.

Anthony Rodriguez walked to lead off the 4th. It looked as if the rally would be snuffed out before it even began, because Hector Martinez and Alvaro Alvarez followed by striking out. However, Bernardo Heras and Jose Miguel Hernandez were both plunked to load the bases, and Kendy Moya promptly cleared them with a triple. Ronaldo Urdaneta followed that with a single, and Ramiro Rodriguez ripped an RBI double to bring Moya home. Gilberto Celestino capped off the scoring in the 4th by smacking a 2-run double. Heras drove in Team Orange's final run of the day with an RBI single in the 7th. Ramiro Rodriguez and Celestino both finished 2-5 on the day.

In a battle of Joes, it was Wieland who came out on top. The Grizzlies scored 3 in the 7th inning to make it a 6-4 game, but the Rainiers put this one out of reach with 4 runs in the 8th.

Fresno's Joe, Musgrove, pitched 5 innings and allowed 6 runs on 6 hits (2 2-run homers), walked 1, and struck out 3. Reymin Guduan was the first man out of the bullpen and walked 1 in 2 scoreless innings. Jordan Jankowski pitched the 8th and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1.

Jack Mayfield put the Grizzlies on the board with an RBI single in the 4th. Matt Duffy hit a 2-run single in the 7th inning and came around to score on a triple from Preston Tucker. Tucker finished a home run shy of the cycle. Duffy finished 2-4 and scored twice.

The Hooks emphatically broke a 3-3 tie with 7 runs in the 7th inning. Mott Hyde and Danry Vásquez made their returns to the Corpus Christi lineup after they were involved in a nasty collision last month that put both of them on the disabled list.

Alfredo Gonzalez scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch that was also ball 4 to Danry in the 3rd inning. In the 5th, Chan-Jong Moon scored on an error, and Danry hit an RBI single. The Roughriders scored a run in the 6th to tie the game at 3, but that scoreline would be short-lived.

James Ramsay led off the 7th rather painfully as he was hit by a pitch. Gonzalez ripped a double to put runners in scoring position for Moon, who broke the tie with an RBI single. Alejandro Garcia was plunked to load the bases. Alfredo was forced out at home, but Danry reached safely to keep the bases loaded. Nick Tanielu followed with an RBI single, but Garcia was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning. Teoscar Hernandez walked to re-load the bases, and Conrad Gregor drew a walk to bring in Danry, resulting in a pitching change for Frisco. Hyde promptly greeted the new pitcher, Jason Richman, with a grand slam.

Not everyone in the lineup had a hit, but they all scored a run. Moon scored twice, while the other 8 players in the Hooks lineup scored once. Moon and Alfredo had 2 hits apiece; both of Gonzalez's hits were doubles.

Cy Sneed pitched 5 innings and allowed a 2-run home run to Ryan Cordell, which were the only runs that he allowed. Sneed allowed two other hits, issued a walk, and struck out 7. Kyle Smith tagged in for 3 innings and allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Gonzalo Sañudo struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th.

David Paulino will start the series finale. He'll take on Connor Sadzeck at 7:05.

A 10-1 deficit after 4 innings doomed the JetHawks. They were also held to just 4 hits in this game.

Both teams scored a run in the 2nd inning; Lancaster's run came in the form of a sac fly from Tony Nuñez. In the 5th inning, Garrett Stubbs scored on a wild pitch and Jason Martin whacked a 3-run home run, his only hit of the evening. Trent Woodward's double was the JetHawks only other extra-base hit.

Matt Bower went 3.2 innings and allowed 10 runs (6 earned) on 10 hits (solo, 2-run, and grand slam), walked 1, and struck out 6. Yeyfry Del Rosario pitched 3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Kevin Comer was the next pitcher to appear; he allowed a hit, walked 3, and struck out 2 in 1.1 innings, and Ryan Thompson struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Osvaldo Duarte's solo home run in the 3rd inning was the River Bandits' only scoring play. Kristian Trompiz finished 2-4 with a stolen base (4, 8 season). Duarte also walked twice and stole his 11th base of the season.

Franklin Perez went 5 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits and struck out 6. Kevin McCanna and Ralph Garza Jr. followed with 4 scoreless innings; McCanna allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 3, while Garza allowed 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Adam Whitt pitched the 14th inning and allowed the go-ahead run on an RBI double from Luis Arraez, which was also the only hit that he allowed. He struck out 1.

The ValleyCats greeted their fans by romping to an Opening Night victory.

In his first professional plate appearance, Stephen Wrenn smacked a solo home run. Randy César doubled to lead off the 2nd, and he scored on a sac fly from Brauly Mejia. Tri-City scored 5 runs in the 5th on 4 doubles: Daz Cameron smacked a 2-run double and came around to score on a Taylor Jones double. Jones scored on Jake Rogers' two-bagger, and Rogers came home on a double from Mejia. César hit an RBI single in the 6th, and in the 7th inning, Carmen Benedetti hit an RBI single, and Jones followed with his first pro home run, a grand slam.

Everyone in the lineup had a hit except for Kolbey Carpenter, who still drew a walk and scored. Mejia was the only person to not score a run. Wrenn (solo HR, 4 R), Benedetti, Jones (grand slam, 5 RBI, 2 R), César (2B, RBI, R), Rogers (2B, RBI, R), and Mejia (2B, 2 RBI) all had 2-hit nights.

Akeem Bostick threw 6 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. Sebastian Kessay pitched the final 3 innings and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7.

Felipe Tejada went 4 innings and allowed a run, a hit, walked 2, and struck out 4. Carlos Perdomo allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Juan Cuevas got the win after throwing 5 scoreless innings; he allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6.

Astros Farm Report: 5/17

It was a good news, bad (terrible) news day on the Astros minor league front. Bad news first.

It was a terrible scene last night in San Antonio last night as Mott Hyde dove for a ball in shallow left field and collided with Danry Vasquez. Hyde was taken to the hospital with a head injury while Vasquez's left leg was splinted and he was carried off the field. I saw no subsequent reports about the extent of their injuries, but send your good thoughts and prayers their way for a quick recovery. Oh, and by the way, Hyde got the out!

In much, much better news, the Astros announced that OF/IF Tony Kemp was being called up to Houston. Kemp, a 5th round 2013 draft pick out of Vanderbilt University, was drafted as a second baseman but has also been playing the outfield the last couple of seasons since second base in Houston is currently occupied by Jose Altuve. Kemp is probably a better second baseman than he is an outfielder at this point (he won the MiLB Gold Glove at second in 2014), but do not discount his abilities. Kemp gets the absolute maximum out of his body that he can, is incredibly smart and will continue to improve.

I first talked to Kemp shortly after he was drafted in 2013 in this interview and again in 2014. At a listed 5'6", he is a huge personality in a little package. He works as hard as anyone I've seen to keep improving. And he always has a smile and a kind word for everyone he meets. There are some players I've met over the years that I root for just a little bit harder than others. Kemp is one of those.

The Grizzlies walked off with a loss as old friend Marc Krauss whacked a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th for Vegas, as they scored 4 unanswered runs in the final 3 innings.

Both teams scored a run in the 1st and the 4th; A.J. Reed opened up the scoring with an RBI groundout, while Colin Moran added a sac fly. Danny Worth finished 2-4 with 2 runs scored and broke the tie with a 2-run homer in the 6th.

Originally, Chris Devenski was the scheduled starter, but now that he's with the Astros, Brad Peacock got the nod, and he delivered 5 solid innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits (solo homer), walking 2, and striking out 5. César Valdez was first, and he allowed a solo shot to Travis Taijeron in the 7th, one other hit, and struck out 1 in 1.1 innings. After Valdez surrendered the homer to Taijeron, Kevin Chapman came on, and he got the final 2 outs of the 7th via strikeout. Roger Bernadina took him deep to begin the 8th, but he recovered by getting a groundout. Jordan Jankowski came on and got the final 2 outs of the frame.

Jankowski came on for the 9th and worked around a leadoff single to get 2 outs. However, he ended up getting the loss as Krauss ended the game by taking Juan Minaya deep. One of those 2 runs was charged to Jankowski, who allowed just the single and struck out 2 in 1.1 innings. Krauss was the only batter Minaya faced.

Asher Wojciechowski will take on Seth Lugo in game 2 of this series; first pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 2, Tulsa 0

CC home runs: Mott Hyde (1, solo in 3rd)

Corpus opened up 2016 with a dazzling duet on the mound as Joe Musgrove and Keegan Yuhl joined forces to throw a 2-hit shutout; in the process, they dispatched the Drillers in a mere 116 minutes.

Musgrove started it off, and in 5 innings, he allowed a hit and fanned 4. Yuhl put the finishing touches on this one, allowing a hit and striking out 3 over the final 4 frames. Together, they faced one batter over the minimum.

The first Astros farmhand to hit a home run in 2016 was Mott Hyde, who opened up the scoring with a solo blast in the 3rd inning. Hyde reached in all 3 of his plate appearances (2-2, BB) and also drove in the other Corpus run with an RBI single in the 7th.

Evan Gattis, who's in Corpus on a rehab assignment, served as the DH in this game and in 4 at-bats, he had a pop-fly double. At the top of the order, D.J. Fisher finished 2-4.

David Paulino makes his AA debut in game 2; he'll take on Chris Anderson at 7:05.

San Jose 4, Lancaster 3

Down 4-2 in the 9th, the JetHawks managed to pull a run back in the final frame, but their comeback bid fell just short as they stranded the tying run on 2nd.

Garrett Stubbs drove in Lancaster's first run of 2016 when he grounded into a force out in the 4th that scored Ramon Laureano. Jason Martin finished 2-4 and smacked an RBI double in the 5th. Jose Fernandez, who also went 2-4, hit a 1-out single in the 9th, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a Kristian Trompiz single, and wound up scoring on a passed ball/Bobby Boyd strikeout.

Akeem Bostick went 3 innings and allowed a run on 6 hits (all singles) and walked 1. Dean Deetz tagged in for 3.1 innings, allowing a run on 3 hits and striking out 3. Kevin Comer pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed 2 runs (on a triple) on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3.

In game 2 of this 4-game set, Andrew Walter will take the mound for the JetHawks. He'll take on Sam Coonrod at 7:00 Pacific.

The Banditos stumbled out of the gate to open 2016 as they committed 5 errors and ultimately got buried by a 10-3 run from the Kernels, which included a 6-run 8th, to close out the game.

Johnny Sewald put Quad Cities on the board with an RBI groundout in the 3rd. They did not score again until the 8th, when Kyle Tucker added an RBI groundout of his own. Sewald added a 2-run infield single in the 9th. Anthony Hermelyn reached base in all 4 of his plate appearances; he went 2-2 with a double, drew a couple of walks, and scored twice. Sewald stole 2 bases.

Rogelio Armenteros went 4 innings and allowed 2 unearned runs on 5 hits and struck out 5. Ryan Deemes faced a bases-loaded situation in the 5th thanks to 2 walks and a single, but he was able to avert disaster and got himself out of the jam. The wheels fell off from under Alex Winkelman and Adam Whitt in the 8th inning, unfortunately. Winkelman allowed 6 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 3, and struck out 1 over 2.1 innings. Whitt got the final 2 outs of the 8th, but not before allowing 4 runs of his own (in addition to the 2 runners he inherited from Winkelman) on 3 hits and walking 1.

Matt Duffy's homer to lead off the 2nd inning was the only Fresno run, and was one of just 4 hits. Domingo Santana hit a double in 2 at-bats and drew a walk.

Brady Rodgers went 6 innings and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits (2 homers hit by Stefen Romero), walked 2, and struck out 7. Richard Rodriguez struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 7th, and James Hoyt worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 8th.

The Grizzlies will try to avoid the sweep at 1:35 Pacific. They have yet to announce a starter for this game.

The Hooks held the Roughriders to just 2 hits, but they still ended up with the loss. Baseball.

One mistake really can decide the outcome, and in no sport is this more obvious than in baseball. One pitch that Lance McCullers would absolutely love to have back... sunk him in this game. He allowed a 2-run homer to Royce Bolinger in the 2nd, which turned out to be the difference. McCullers pitched 6 innings and allowed just one other hit (a single before the homer), walked 2, and struck out 7. The 2-run home run represented the first earned runs that Lance has surrendered this season.

Angel Báez was the first man out of the bullpen; he walked 1 and struck out 2 over 2 scoreless, and Travis Ballew struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Corpus had 6 singles on offense, 2 of which were hit by Conrad Gregor. Despite the power outage, the Hooks still threatened as they put 2 runners on in the bottom of the 9th, but sadly, Teoscar Hernandez lined out to end the game.

The Hooks are looking to get on the board in this series as Kyle Westwood takes the hill. He'll face Andrew Faulkner at 2:05.

Modesto 8, Lancaster 6

Ugh. The JetHawks bullpen suffered a horrible meltdown as they gave up 6 in the bottom of the 9th and walked off with a loss. Ugh.

A.J. Reed opened up the scoring with an RBI groundout in the 1st. Jose Fernandez extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single in the 4th. After the Nuts tied the game in the bottom half of the 4th, the JetHawks quickly re-took control with 2 in the 5th coming on a J.D. Davis single. They got some insurance in the 9th on an RBI single by Brett Phillips and an RBI double by Jack Mayfield.... but in the California League, no lead is truly safe, and the JetHawks found that out in a painful fashion.

Michael Feliz went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Zach Morton tagged in and threw 3 scoreless. He came out for the 9th, and that's when the trouble began. Wilfredo Rodriguez tagged him for a 2-run homer. Albert Minnis came in, but only got 1 out (via strikeout) and allowed 3 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 2 hits. Gonzalo Sañudo got the 2nd out of the 9th, but he was unable to extract the JetHawks from this perilous situation, allowing the game-winning 3-run homer to Jordan Patterson.

The JetHawks will look to avoid the sweep this afternoon. Troy Scribner gets the start at 1:05 Pacific.

The best in the Midwest notched their 4th consecutive victory as they got the jump on the Timber Rattlers.

Nick Tanielu finished 2-4 with 2 doubles; the first one came in the 1st and drove in the first 2 runs of the day. He later scored on a single from Alex Hernandez. After Mott Hyde hit his 2nd double of the game in the 3rd, Tanielu traded places with him by cracking another double. And, in the 7th, Alfredo Gonzalez added an RBI single. Hyde finished 3-3 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored; both runs came off of Tanielu's doubles.

Kevin Comer went 4.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5. Reymin Guduan got the win in his season debut as he allowed 2 hits, and walked 1 while striking out 3 over 2 scoreless. Eric Peterson got the 7-out save, allowing 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 1.

The Grizz got 2 in the 4th inning on a Max Stassi RBI single and a sac fly from Nolan Fontana.

Jake Buchanan went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 9 hits (solo homer) and struck out 2. Darin Downs struck out 2 over 1.2 near-perfect frames; he hit a batter. Jordan Jankowski got the final out of the 7th and the first out of the 8th inning. He allowed a hit, walked 1, struck out 1, and uncorked a wild pitch. Despite facing a bases-loaded situation in the 8th, Kevin Chapman was able to seal the win as he walked 1 and struck out 2.

Their 2 runs came in the 5th inning on a Preston Tucker sac fly and a Domingo Santana RBI triple. Ronald Torreyes led off the bottom of the 9th with a double, but he was thrown out at home trying to score the tying run on a Nolan Fontana fielder's choice. Alex Presley and Preston Tucker walked to load the bases, but sadly, Jon Singleton flied out to end the game.

Dan Straily pitched 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Richard Rodriguez struck out 2 over 3 perfect frames, and James Hoyt struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Fresno has a day off as they head up to Tacoma; they'll finish up April and begin May there.

The Hooks walked off with the loss as Carson Blair took Kent Emanuel deep to tie the game at 8, and Matt Olson hit a sac fly to bring home Chad Oberacker with the winning run.

Carlos Correa got things started when he cracked an RBI triple in the 1st inning. He drove in another run with a single in the 3rd inning. Two batters later, Tyler White added a 2-run single. Leo Heras hit an RBI single in the 4th. After the Rockhounds took a 7-5 lead into the 7th inning, Corpus went back to work as Conrad Gregor made it a 1-run game with an RBI double, and then in the 8th, they took the lead thanks to a Tony Kemp RBI groundout and a Colin Moran RBI double.

Kemp went 1-3 with the RBI groundout, 2 walks, and scored 3 times. Moran, who stretched his hitting streak to 5 games, finished 3-5 with 2 doubles and a run scored; he's ripped 5 doubles during that streak. Tyler White finished 2-4, and Telvin Nash went 2-3 with a run scored.

Aaron West went 5 innings and allowed 5 runs, all on 3 home runs; he allowed 2 solo homers and was taken deep for a 3-run homer. He also allowed 4 other hits and struck out 3. Kent Emanuel tagged in for 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits (solo homer), walking 2, and striking out 1. Mitch Lambson got 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, allowing a hit and walking 1.

Rough day for Hooks pitchers, who walked 7 and allowed 13 hits. They also gave up 8 runs.

The Hooks got on the board first with a Conrad Gregor sac fly in the 1st. Unfortunately, they would not score again until the 8th; in between, Midland scored 7 runs. Carlos Correa finished 2-2 with a double and a solo homer in the 8th inning. Corpus got 2 more in the 9th on an RBI double from Telvin Nash and an RBI single from Teoscar Hernandez. Tyler Heineman went 2-4. Correa's 2-2 day raised his average to an even .400. Be still, my heart.

Kyle Westwood allowed 4 runs on 10 hits and walked 2 over 4.1 innings. Jonas Dufek tagged in for 2.1 innings; he allowed 3 runs on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2. He had all the strikeouts for the Hooks in this game. Angel Báez pitched 1.1 innings and walked 2; the only hit and run he allowed came off a solo homer from Colin Walsh in the 8th.

In this battle for first place, the Quakes fired the first shot as they doubled up the JetHawks.

Jack Mayfield's first homer of the year put Lancaster on the scoreboard in the 2nd and tied the game at 1. Unfortunately, that would be the only run they would score until the 7th, as the Quakes built up a 9-1 lead on the strength of a 6-run 6th inning. In the 7th, though, the JetHawks got a bases-clearing triple from Chan-Jong Moon, who ended up scoring himself on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, that outburst wouldn't be enough in this one. Moon and J.D. Davis finished with 2 hits apiece.

Evan Grills went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 3. Tyler Brunnemann worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 5th, striking out 2. Troy Scribner tagged in for 3 innings and allowed 7 runs on 6 hits (5 singles and a solo homer), walked 3, and struck out 3. Gonzalo Sañudo walked 1 in a scoreless 9th.

In game 2, Blaine Sims will face Jeff Brigham at 6:30 Pacific.

Well, that stunk...

Joe Musgrove probably would've liked to have that 11th inning back as the first 3 Kernels to bat in the inning reached base on him; 2 of them reached on errors that he committed, and Cedar Rapids ended up getting the only run (which was unearned) of the game off of him on a sac fly. That was a tough end to an otherwise fine outing for Musgrove, who went 6 innings and allowed 4 hits while striking out 1. Bryan Radziewski was absolutely stellar in his start as he allowed just 2 hits and struck out 4 over 5 shutout innings.

The River Bandits outhit Cedar Rapids 9-6, but they were unable to get a run across. Mott Hyde went 3-5 with a double, while Sean McMullen finished 2-4 with a triple.

In game 2 of this series, Dan Mengden will take on Mat Batts at 7.
