Astros home runs: None.
The Astros concluded their time in Florida with a victory on the strength of a 7-run 7th. Mark Appel made his long-awaited debut in an Astros uniform, pitching a scoreless 7th for the victory. It won't be long before he makes his Astros debut for real.
Starting Pitcher: Scott Feldman
Feldman pitched into the 6th in what should be his final tune-up before Opening Day. He was taken deep for a 2-run shot by Anthony Recker in the 5th and gave up 1 more run in the 6th. Feldman did not issue any walks and struck out 6.
Final line: 5.2 IP, 6 H (2-R homer), 3 ER, 6 K
Bullpen
Brad Peacock only faced one batter; he got the out to end the 6th.
Mark Appel pitched the 7th and worked around a leadoff single to retire the side, striking out 2.
Kevin Chapman got 2 outs (1 via strikeout) in the 8th, but also gave up 3 runs (1 inherited) in the process. Anthony Bass got the final out of the inning with a strikeout, and closed it out by striking out the side in the 9th.
Best stat of the night: Zero walks!!!
Offense
Carlos Corporán led the way with 2 hits. He and Chris Carter scored 2 runs apiece. So... there's an unlikely source of runs scored. The Astros had been shut out for 2/3 of the game until stretch time. I guess that's what they needed to get themselves going.
3 walks loaded the bases in the 7th. At that time, Jose Altuve was the lone casualty of the inning, as he was called out on strikes. Carlos Corporan worked a full count, then stroked a 2-run double to put the Astros on the board, down 3-2. They'd take the lead on another 2-run double from L.J. Hoes, and a 3rd consecutive double from Matt Dominguez brought Hoes home. Marwin Gonzalez continued the assault with an RBI single, and Preston Tucker chipped in with an RBI single of his own to finish off the big inning.
In the 8th, Carter scored on a wild pitch, and Hoes added a sac fly for the Astros' final run of the night.

Zzzzzz.... oh. Sorry. I didn't watch all of this game, and this happened to be one of the rare baseball games that put me to sleep.
Starting Pitcher: Scott Feldman
This year's Opening Day starter labored through 5 innings, and the defense behind him was shaky, as the Astros committed a pair of errors. Garrett Jones took him deep for a 2-run shot in the 1st. Feldman did record his usually healthy amount of groundball outs.
Final line: L (0-2), 5 IP, 7 H (2-R HR), 5 R (4 earned), BB, 3 K
Bullpen
Josh Zeid was the first reliever out of the bullpen and gave up a run in the 6th on a couple of singles, but responded by striking out the side in order in the 7th.
Matt Albers struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 8th, and Chad Qualls gave up a single to Austin Nola to begin the 9th, and uncorked a wild pitch to allow him to score. Qualls struck out 1 in his inning of work.
Offense
The Astros got their 2 runs on a pair of RBI singles from L.J. Hoes (in the 4th) and Carlos Corporán (in the 5th).
Robbie Grossman's double was the only extra-base hit, and Jose Altuve drew 2 walks.

As the old adage goes, one big inning can change the complexion of a baseball game. The Astros got a 5-spot in the 6th to blow this game open.
Starting Pitcher: Lucas Harrell
Lucas Harrell threw 4 fine innings as he is trying to stake his claim to a rotation spot. The Nationals' only run off of him came on a Bryce Harper groundout. The only hits they managed off of him were doubles.
Final line: W (1-1), 4 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, K
Bullpen
Mike Foltynewicz was the first man out, and the only run he allowed was a solo homer to Steven Souza to lead off the 6th.
Josh Zeid also allowed a run in the 7th; his outing got a bit hairy, but he escaped a bases-loaded situation without suffering further damage.
Alex Sogard struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 8th, and Josh Fields surrendered the Nationals' final run on a force play in the 9th.
Offense
After George Springer legged out an infield single in the 2nd, he stole 2nd base, then Carlos Corporán put the Astros on the board and gave them the lead with a 2-run homer.
They seized control in the 6th, as Corporán hit a 1-out double to get the assault going. He would score on a single from L.J. Hoes, who was lifted for Adron Chambers. After Gregorio Petit was hit by a pitch, Delino DeShields got on with a bunt single to load the bases. Jonathan Villar was next up, and he promptly cleared them with a double. After stealing 3rd, Villar came home with the Astros' final run of the evening on an RBI infield single from Japhet Amador.
Corporán and Petit both went 2-3. Corporán also had a multi-run game.

This game was on the verge of getting ugly early, but the Astros clawed their way back into it with a 5-0 run from the 3rd to the 5th to get within 1. Alas, they couldn't find the breakthrough, and the Nationals got 2 more in the 6th to gain just enough separation from Houston.

Let's just say that the 1st was an absolute mess for Obie and leave it at that. He responded with a 1-2-3 2nd.

Astros Winter League Cumulative Stats - Position Players
The regular seasons are over for all of the winter season leagues except for the Australian Baseball League so let's take a look at how your Astros did. On Monday, we looked at the pitchers. Today, let's look at the position players. There were several outstanding performances.
OF George Springer (Arizona Fall League)
Springer had a particularly good fall campaign. In 21 games, he hit .286/.412/.600 with four doubles, three triples, four home runs and five stolen bases. His OPS was fourth in the league and his SLG was third in the league. He was the only Astros winter league player with an OPS over 1.000.
SS Jio Mier (Arizona Fall League)
Jio Mier was designated as a taxi squad player (only intended to play twice a week), but ended up working his way into regular playing time later in the season and played some third base as well as shortstop. I was very pleased to see Kiké build on his 2012 comeback season. In 39 games in the regular LBPRC season, he hit .320/.379/.469 with 12 doubles, two triples, two home runs and four stolen bases. He was sixth in the league in BA, 13th in OBP, eighth in SLG and fifth in OPS. Watch out Altuve, Kiké is catching up to you (and he's just as big a hit with the fans!). Although he primarily played second base, he also played several games at third.

And speaking of fan favorites, Brandon Barnes quickly wowed the LVBP fans with his style of play. Brandon only played in 28 games and was back in the States in time to spend Thanksgiving with his wife and daughter, but the Caracas crowd had already adopted him as one of their own. He hit .292/.353/.491 with three doubles, three triples and four home runs.

C Carlos Perez hit a more than respectable .324/.398/.500 with 13 doubles and two home runs in 32 games in the Liga Paralela. And last, but certainly not least, C Luis Alavarez not only hit a robust .340/.398/.474 in 28 games in the Liga Paralela, he also went 6-for-7 with two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored in the playoffs as his Magallanes team won the Liga Paralela crown.
OF George Springer (Arizona Fall League)
Springer had a particularly good fall campaign. In 21 games, he hit .286/.412/.600 with four doubles, three triples, four home runs and five stolen bases. His OPS was fourth in the league and his SLG was third in the league. He was the only Astros winter league player with an OPS over 1.000.
SS Jio Mier (Arizona Fall League)
Jio Mier was designated as a taxi squad player (only intended to play twice a week), but ended up working his way into regular playing time later in the season and played some third base as well as shortstop. Oklahoma City Redhawks Season Recap
So far we have looked at the DSL Astros season, the GCL Astros season, the Greeneville Astros season and the Lexington Legends season. Now let's take a look at the AAA Oklahoma City affiliate. Here's a quick look at how the 2011 and 2012 teams compare.

It's hard to truly judge a AAA affiliate because those teams are generally a mix of lifetime minor leaguers who may get an occasional MLB callup to fill a hole, struggling major leaguers who have been sent down to work on things and a few true prospects. With that said, it's difficult to read too much into the results and season comparisons at this level.
So which players had standout seasons in Oklahoma City?
There were several position players whose 2012 seasons resulted in a call-up to the Astros, such as OF Brandon Barnes (.321/.381/.514 39-2B 1-3B 12HR between Corpus Christi and Oklahoma City), 3B Matt Dominguez (.298/.347/.398), IF Scott Moore (.318/.410/.555 26-2B 1-3B 10HR), OF Fernando Martinez (.314/.367/.507 23-2B 2-3B 13HR) and C Carlos Corporan (.286/.349/.447 15-2B 6HR).
But probably the most noteworthy of those getting call-ups was OF Jimmy Paredes. In 124 games, the 23-year old hit .318/.348/.477 with 28 doubles, seven triples, 13 home runs and 37 stolen bases (tied for second in the league). He was third in the league in hits with 161 and fifth in runs scored with 92.
Of the position players left behind, the best seasons belonged to SS Angel Sanchez (.320/.390/.407 13-2B 1-3B 5HR), OF Brad Snyder (.304/.375/.550 23-2B 3-3B 20HR) and the ever dependable albeit not flashy OF J.B. Shuck (.298/.374/.352 with 11-2B 3-3B). Sanchez ranked in the top 20 in the league in batting average and on-base percentage. Snyder was seventh in slugging, eighth in OPS and was tied for 11th in home runs.
The 34-year old journeyman IF Mike Hessman deserves his own paragraph. Although he only hit .231 with a .301 OBP, he was 13th in the league with a .515 slugging percentage, first in home runs with 35 (and third in strikeouts with 136), and was tied for 11th in the league in RBI.
Several relief pitchers shuttled back and forth from Oklahoma City to Houston and back again, such as Fernando Abad (now starting), Xavier Cedeno and Enerio del Rosario. But it was RHP Mickey Storey that opened some eyes with his performance at Oklahoma City and merited an August 3rd call-up. In 38 appearances, including two spot starts, Storey was 7-4 with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.169 WHIP. Another standout was RHP Jose Valdez who ranked third in the league in saves with 21. His season numbers do not impress at first glance, but if you throw out his June numbers when he was nursing an injury that would eventually land him on the DL, his ERA drops to 2.84 with a 1.237 WHIP for the remainder of the season.
LHP Dallas Keuchel (6-4 in 16 starts, 3.90 ERA, 1.213 WHIP) had a good season with OKC before his call-up and RHP Edgar Gonzalez (1-0 in 2 starts, 0.69 ERA, 0.615 WHIP) barely saw the inside of the clubhouse at OKC before his call-up.
Of the pitchers left behind, three in particular made that crucial step from AA to AAA during the season and showed good progress in their development. LHP Brett Oberholtzer (10-10 in 38 starts, 4.37 ERA, 1.356 WHIP combined) actually got stronger as the season progressed and ended the season at Oklahoma City with a 2.02 ERA and a 1.121 WHIP over his final five starts. RHP Jarred Cosart only made six appearances (five starts) with Oklahoma City, but had a very impressive 2.60 ERA and 1.410 WHIP. His combined numbers for the season were 6-7 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.395 WHIP. RHP Jose Cisnero was 4-1 at Oklahoma City and ended the season with a 3.70 ERA and 1.409 WHIP (combined), and a 4.54 ERA and 1.764 WHIP at Oklahoma City -- not the most impressive of numbers but a decent first step.
I will continue with my look at the final three teams' seasons when they finish post-season play. I hope I have to wait a good long while!

Friday's Results
DSL Astros 6 DSL Mariners 11
The DSL Astros combined for 4 fielding errors, 1 throwing
error and 4 wild pitches Friday. The DSL
pitching staff allowed 11 runs (7 earned), but found a way to strike out 8
batters. Brauly Mejia, who leads the DSL Astros in BA (.269), stole 2nd and 3rd
in the 2nd inning and went 2 for 5 at the plate with 2 RBI's. Juan Hernandez is still looking for his first
win this season after collecting his 2nd loss in 6 starts.
GCL Nationals 1 GCL Astros 6
Michael Feliz pitched a solid 8 innings for the Astros Friday and picked up his 3rd win of the year. The Astros got on the board early, scoring 2 runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings. The combination was too much for The Nat's. So far, over 4 games and 23 and a 1/3 innings pitched, Feliz has a 1.16 ERA. Friday, Feliz allowed 1 run on 4 hits, struck out 4 and walked 1. Yonathan Mejia and Juan Santana both went 2 for 4 at the plate. Santana had 3 RBI's.

with a double and scored a run. Zachary Dando picked up his 2nd "W"
of the year after pitching the final 2.

The second game of the doubleheader Friday wasn't decided until the last inning. The Astros only had 5 hits in the game. 2 of those hits came on Terrell Joyce singles. Adrian Houser had a nice start, but is still searching for his 1st win. Houser allowed 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 6 over 7 innings. Mike Hauschild picked up the loss after coming on to close out the 8th inning. Hauschild struck out 2 and walked 1 over 1 and a 1/3 innings.

The ValleyCats seem to be falling into a bit of a funk as they completed the series with State College Friday by being swept in 3 games. This comes on the heels of an 11 game ValleyCats winning streak. They also committed 3 errors Friday night. The only run of the game came on a Jesse Wierzbicki solo HR. Wierzbicki went 2 for 3. Andrew Aplin also got a couple of hits (2-4) with a double. Vincent Velasquez gave up all 3 of Spikes' runs in the game by the 3rd inning, walked 3 and struck out 4 over 5 innings. Velasquez also had a wild pitch and a balk.

Lexington is still having a rough go of it lately. This is the 3rd time (of 3 games) that the Legends have fallen to a come-from-behind win by Hagerstown. Not all was glum Friday for the Legends though. Delino DeShields picked up stolen base number 61 Friday and went 3 for 5 at the plate. Justin Gominsky got on base every trip up, going 2 for 3 with a walk and a run. Matt Duffy also had a notable night at the plate hitting 2 of 4, walking once and jacking a HR. Duffy also scored 2 and had an RBI. Luis Cruz didn't have a bad start for Lexington, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and striking out 5 over 7. Murilo Gouvea was charged with his 4th blown save of the year but still found a way to strike out 4 batters over 2 innings.

the final 2 batters of the night and struck out 1, collecting his 14th save in
15 save appearances. Drew Muren went 3 for 3 at the plate, walked once and
scored a run. Jon Singleton drew 3 walks
in 4 AB's and scored a run as well.

Come-from-behind wins are always fun, especially when they snap a losing streak and avoid the sweep. Lancaster scored 5 runs starting in the 7th (3 runs in the 9th) to take this one back. Jonathan Meyer went 2 for 5 at the plate with 2 RBI's Friday night. RBI number 2 being the game winner on a walk off single. Domingo Santana also went 2 for 5 with his bat and had a couple of RBI's. Nicholas Tropeano had a rough outing for the JetHawks Friday, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits, 2 of which were long balls. Tropeano also threw 4 wild pitches Friday night. Jose Trinidad picked up the win after coming on for the final 3. Trinidad walked 2 and struck out 4, not giving up a single hit. Trinidad's solid performance allowed Lancaster back in the game.
Game of the Day
Oklahoma City RedHawks 5 New Orleans Zephyrs 4 (11)
The only thing more fun than a come-from-behind win is a you-ain't-coming-back-on-us-tie extra innings game on the road. That's exactly what Oklahoma City had Friday night. Carlos Corporan even got in on the fun by going 5 for 5 and batting in the game winning run in the 11th after the game reached a 4-4 stalemate in the 7th. Angel Sanchez went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI's and J.B. Shuck went 2 for 4 too with a couple of RBI'S and 2 walks. All 4 of New Orleans' runs came on Armando Galarraga's watch and he left the game in the 7th. Juan Abreu and Mickey Storey combined for 8 strikeouts over the final 5 innings. Storey gave up 2 hits; Abreu gave up none. Mickey Storey picked up the win moving him to 7-2 on the season.
What went right: Abreu and Storey took over last night and with their strong outings allowed Oklahoma the opportunity to get the win.
What went wrong: It took the RedHawks 4 innings to seize the opportunity. Oklahoma City left 5 runners on over the 8th, 9th and 10th innings. For example, the RedHawks had 2 on with 1 out in the 10th and failed to score.

In the minor leagues for Houston, he hit .250/.330/.413/.742, but only managed a .188/.253/.253/.506 batting line at the major league level.

Roster Moves - 11/16/11
C Carlos Corporan was removed from the 40-Man Roster, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Oklahoma City. He can chose to become a free agent.
The 40-Man Roster now stands at 37 in advance of the Rule 5 draft. I still believe that Houston will protect Kody Hinze, particularly after showcasing him in the Arizona Fall League. And I've noted previously that I would take a good long look at protecting Dayan Diaz after his comeback from injury that caused him to be named an Organizational All-Star by MiLB.
