Drafted in the 45th round in 2011 out of Clemson, this Georgia native split his time in 2012 between Lexington (.226/.311/.338 in 36 games) and Lancaster (285/.376/.589 in 46 games). In the post-season for Lancaster, he hit .353 with three doubles, a triple, a home run, four RBI and a stolen base.
C Jair "Jay" Fernandez (26)
A native of Colombia, Fernandez signed with the Astros organization as a free agent prior to the 2012 season. Fernandez spent the vast majority of his season with Corpus Christi where he hit .269/.341/.419 with ten doubles and six home runs in 56 games. He is currently a free agent.

RHP Doug Henry (49)
Originally drafted by the Brewers in the eighth round in 1985, Henry came to Houston as a free agent in November 1997. In 139 games for the Astros from 1998 to 2000, he was 11-8 with 5 saves and had a 3.88 ERA and a 1.372 WHIP. In four games for Houston in the NLDS in 1998 and 1999, he had a 1.88 ERA and a 1.125 WHIP.
RHP Dan Wheeler (35)
A 34th round pick by Tampa in 1996, Wheeler came to Houston in an August 2004 trade with the Mets. In 205 games for the Astros from 2004 to 2007, he was 6-12 with 23 saves and had a 3.02 ERA and a 1.088 WHIP. In the NLDS in 2004 and 2005, he pitched in four games with a 1.69 ERA and a 1.313 WHIP. Since it's his birthday, we'll just say that he didn't fare quite that well in the World Series and leave it at that. He was traded to the then Devil Rays in 2007 for Ty Wigginton. He played for Cleveland in 2012 and is currently a free agent.
2B Bob Fenwick (66)
A first round pick by the Giants in 1967, Fenwick was drafted from the Giants in the Rule 5 draft in November 1971. In 36 games for the Astros in 1972, he hit .180/.226/.240. According to Baseball-Reference, Fenwick was the only major leaguer born in Okinawa when it was under U.S. control.

Corpus Christi Hooks - June 2012
Over the last couple of weeks, I've attempted to cull through and organize hundreds of photos I took at the various minor league venues during the 2012 season. Here are a few you may enjoy. I have also uploaded photos to Flickr. You can find my Corpus Christi photos from June 2012 here and from the September 7th playoff game here. Unfortunately, I haven't tagged the photos yet, but hope to do so at some point during the off-season. I'll be posting photos of my August trips to Lancaster and Greeneville tomorrow.

Minor League Recaps
Wednesday's Results
DSL Astros over DSL Athletics 4-1
Johan Arias pitched five strong innings but Yonquelys Martinez earned the win (his first) in relief as the Astros scored late. Martinez only allowed three hits in his three scoreless innings and Victor Mesa nailed down the save, his second of the season. Johan Tomas de la Cruz hit a two-run shot, while Frederick Serrano contributed a solo homer to provide the bulk of the offense. Jarico Reynosa and Arturo Michelina both collected two hits for the day.
GCL Cardinals over GCL Astros 6-1 in 7 innings (Game 1)
Chia-Jen Lo got another couple innings in but was pegged with the loss as he gave up two unearned runs on one hit while recording four strikeouts. Darwin Rivera continues to hit well, going two-for-three to bring his average to .346 over 13 games. Juan Santana doubled and had the Astro's sole RBI.
GCL Cardinals at GCL Astros suspended after 1 inning 0-0 (Game 2)
Johnson City over Greeneville 6-4 in 11 innings
Daniel Minor got the start and allowed three runs on three hits over five innings. Four pitchers later, Euris Quezada got the loss as he gave up two unearned runs in relief. D'Andre Toney was three-for-six with two RBIs and Angel Ibanez was two-for-five with a double and an RBI.
Hagerstown over Lexington 3-2
Lexington is in a serious funk right now. They are 4-10 since the All-Star break and just can't seem to gain traction. Carlos Quevedo got his second start in a row after pitching in relief most of the season and was very effective as he gave up no runs in 4.2 innings. Neither team scored until the seventh inning, and the Hagerstown bullpen gave up one fewer run than Lexington's bullpen. Lexington was held to four hits and scored their two runs on a bases loaded walk by Mike Kvasnicka and a solo home run by Brandon Meredith. Spending Tuesday night on a bus probably didn't help. Look for them to rebound tomorrow.
State College over Tri-City 7-2
Alas, the streak is at an end with 11 wins. Not too shabby. The Tri-City pitchers allowed more home runs (three) than Tri-City actually scored runs of any kind, so there's that. Joe Bircher (L, 0-1) got the start but only lasted 3.2 innings as he was ejected for hitting a batter, but he hadn't been very effective having already given up three runs on ten hits. John Neely and Brad Propst each gave up two runs as well. Other than an Austin Elkins solo home run, there wasn't much excitement from the offense.
Oklahoma City over New Orleans 10-9
The Redhawks pulled this one out, barely, as Hector Ambriz decided to make things interesting by turning a 10-6 lead into a 10-9 lead in the bottom of the ninth. Paul Clemens got the start and gave up four runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings. This is the ninth time out of his last ten starts that Clemens has given up four or more runs. Marwin Gonzlez is ready to be activated from the DL. He was three-for-five with three doubles and three RBIs. Landon Powell was three-for-four with a double, a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Jimmy Paredes (home run) and Fernando Martinez were both two-for-five.
Visalia over Lancaster 5-2
David Martinez (L, 2-4) allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings, and Pat Urckfitz pitched the final three, giving up one run. Lancaster scored one in the first and one in the second, and although they threatened a couple of times, they weren't able to score again. Chris Epps hit his fifth triple of the season but otherwise the offense was held to six singles.
Game of the Day

Jose Cisnero got his sixth win thanks to a three-run Jay Fernandez home run and steller relief from Josh Zeid and Jason Stoffel (S, 13). Jon Singleton is continuing to show signs of coming out of his slump as he was two-for-four with a double.
What went right: Terrific relief pitching and a good old-fashioned bomb for the 4th.
What went wrong: The Hooks only got four hits. Thankfully they made them count.

Pitcher of the Day: Not only did Josh Zeid have a great relief outing on Wednesday, he's been having a pretty good stretch (understatement). Over his last nine appearances (since I met him and talked to him in Corpus in early June) he has a 1.50 ERA and a 0.583 WHIP. Coincidence? I don't think so.

SUNDAY'S RECAPS
Corpus Christi over Frisco 14-5
This game got a late start due to a rain delay and I had to get up early so I missed the 11th inning in which the Hooks scored nine runs off an outfielder and a shortstop. There was no indication in the game story as to why an outfielder who had pitched three times in his career and a shortstop who had never pitched in his career were summoned in to what had been a tied ballgame. So there's that.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Brett Oberholtzer was pitching a beauty as he no-hit Frisco through 4.2 innings before giving up two runs (both unearned) in the fifth and a solo home run in the sixth. That was Oberholtzer's fourth quality start in a row. In his last four starts, he is 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA and a 1.090 WHIP. Henry Villar and Josh Zeid combined for scoreless relief over the next two before Jason Stoffel had his first blown save in the ninth to force extra innings. Erick Abreu (W, 7-2) pitched the final two.
The Hooks hitters got it done against Barrett Loux who was 11-0 coming in to the game and had three wins against Corpus already this season, getting three runs off him in the third inning to take the early lead. In the top of the 11th, the Hooks batted around (and then some) as 12 batters came to the plate and Drew Muren (single, double) and Jonathan Villar (double, home run) both had two hits in the inning. In all, the Hooks had a walk, two doubles, three singles and three home runs (Villar, Kody Hinze and Jay Fernandez) in the frame. Jose Martinez, Adam Bailey, Fernandez and Muren all had three hits for the night. Villar, Martinez, Hinze and Fernandez all had three RBIs.
Round Rock over Oklahoma City 4-2
Paul Clemens (L, 8-5) found out what happens when he doesn't get a ton of offense behind him. He loses. Clemens got lucky in that he only gave up four runs because Round Rock had 13 hits off of him in six innings. He's going to have to start putting up some quality starts to get to the next level. (By contrast, Roy Oswalt in a rehab start gave up two runs on six hits and a walk over his six innings.) Enerio del Rosario allowed only one hit over his two innings, but the Redhawks offense wasn't able to get any traction against the Round Rock bullpen. Angel Sanchez got three of the Redhawks eight hits.
GAME OF THE DAY
Lexington over Asheville 2-0
Nick Tropeano had a no-hitter going through five innings and ultimately allowed only three singles over seven innings. Murilo Gouvea's one single allowed in relief and Dayan Diaz' perfect ninth capped off the day as the Legends threw a four-hit shutout to take them into the All-Star break. Lexington was shut out through eight as well in the pitcher's duel. A triple by Brandon Meredith driven in by Justin Gominsky and a double by Chan Moon driving in Gominsky accounted for all the scoring. One other highlight of the game was the ouster of Asheville Manager Joe Mikulik. Although his ejection was fairly calm, he is still known in Lexington for this extraordinary meltdown back in 2006.
What went right: Nick Tropeano's pitching and timely hitting. And amazingly enough in a shutout through seven innings, there was only one strikeout for Legend's hitters in the entire game.
What went wrong: Lexington was held to five hits, and Murilo Gouvea made an error on a pickoff throw but got out of the inning unscathed, and Nick Tropeano issued five walks.

Jose Martinez, Adam Bailey, Fernandez and Muren all had three hits for the night. Villar, Martinez, Hinze and Fernandez all had three RBIs.
Round Rock over Oklahoma City 4-2
Paul Clemens (L, 8-5) found out what happens when he doesn't get a ton of offense behind him. He loses. Clemens got lucky in that he only gave up four runs because Round Rock had 13 hits off of him in six innings. He's going to have to start putting up some quality starts to get to the next level. (By contrast, Roy Oswalt in a rehab start gave up two runs on six hits and a walk over his six innings.) Enerio del Rosario allowed only one hit over his two innings, but the Redhawks offense wasn't able to get any traction against the Round Rock bullpen. Angel Sanchez got three of the Redhawks eight hits.
GAME OF THE DAY
Lexington over Asheville 2-0
Nick Tropeano had a no-hitter going through five innings and ultimately allowed only three singles over seven innings. Murilo Gouvea's one single allowed in relief and Dayan Diaz' perfect ninth capped off the day as the Legends threw a four-hit shutout to take them into the All-Star break. Lexington was shut out through eight as well in the pitcher's duel. A triple by Brandon Meredith driven in by Justin Gominsky and a double by Chan Moon driving in Gominsky accounted for all the scoring. One other highlight of the game was the ouster of Asheville Manager Joe Mikulik. Although his ejection was fairly calm, he is still known in Lexington for this extraordinary meltdown back in 2006.
What went right: Nick Tropeano's pitching and timely hitting. And amazingly enough in a shutout through seven innings, there was only one strikeout for Legend's hitters in the entire game.
What went wrong: Lexington was held to five hits, and Murilo Gouvea made an error on a pickoff throw but got out of the inning unscathed, and Nick Tropeano issued five walks.
