LF Marc Krauss (27)
Krauss came to the Astros organization (along with Bobby Borchering) in a July 2012 trade with the Diamondbacks for 3B Chris Johnson. He started the season in Houston and ended it there, but in between he played in 42 games in Oklahoma City, hitting .289/.375/.459 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 38 RBI. In Houston, he played in 67 games, hitting .194/.279/.323 with six doubles, six home runs and 21 RBI.
RHP Joel Belboder (19)
Belboder, from the Dominican Republic, played his first season for the Dominican Summer League Astros in 2014. In 20 appearances (one start), he was 4-2 with two saves, a 3.38 ERA and a 1.325 WHIP. He walked 15 and struck out 25 in 40 innings of work.

RHP Felipe Paulino (31)
First signed by the Astros as a NDFA out of the Dominican Republic in 2001, Paulino was never quite able to put it together for Houston. In 34 starts over 47 appearances for the Astros in 2007, 2009 and 2010, Paulino went 6-21 with a 5.83 ERA and 1.598 WHIP. Traded to the Rockies for Clint Barmes in November of 2010, Paulino only spent a short time with the Rockies before being dealt to the Kansas City Royals. He is currently in the White Sox organization.
CF Al Heist (died October 2, 2006 at 78)
Drafted from the Cubs in the 1961 expansion draft, Heist played in 27 games for the Colt 45's in 1962, hitting .222/.263/.236. He played for three more seasons for Houston in the minor leagues, but never made it back to the majors.
OF Alex Diaz (46)
Diaz signed as a free agent with Houston in January 1999. He played in 30 games for the Astros that season, hitting .220/.264/.320.
RHP Brandon Puffer (39)
Originally drafted by the Twins in the 27th round in 1994, Puffer first came to the Houston organization in 2000 after pitching in the Atlantic League. In 68 games for the Astros in 2002 and 2003, he was 3-3 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.611 WHIP.

This game was on the verge of getting ugly early, but the Astros clawed their way back into it with a 5-0 run from the 3rd to the 5th to get within 1. Alas, they couldn't find the breakthrough, and the Nationals got 2 more in the 6th to gain just enough separation from Houston.
Starting Pitcher: Brett Oberholtzer
Let's just say that the 1st was an absolute mess for Obie and leave it at that. He responded with a 1-2-3 2nd.

Bullpen
Peter Moylan was the first man out, and he allowed a 1-out single to Ryan Zimmerman in a scoreless 3rd.
Jerome Williams threw 2 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 4, but got into a jam in the 6th. He got 2 outs in the inning, but left the bases loaded for Josh Zeid, who saw Zach Walters spray a 2-run single to left field to solidify the Nationals' lead.
Zeid got the first out of the 7th, then Kevin Chapman came on to finish the inning.

Yes, it's only Spring Training, but Marc Krauss has delivered when he has been given the opportunity to show what he can do. He opened up the scoring on Houston's end with his 2nd homer of the spring, a solo shot in the 3rd. Krauss was the only Astro with a multi-hit game as he went 3-4.
The Astros put up a pair in the 4th on a Marwin Gonzalez sac fly and a Robbie Grossman single, and Carlos Corporan ripped a 2-run double in the 5th.

Starting Pitcher: Dallas Keuchel
For a 3rd straight day, an Astros starter breezed his way through 2 innings. Keuchel allowed a 1-out single to Jeff Baker in the 2nd and promptly ended the inning by inducing a double play. It took Keuchel 17 pitches (14 strikes) to get through his 2 innings.
Final line: 2 IP, H
Bullpen
Peter Moylan tightroped his way out of a bases-loaded situation in the 3rd by gettingMike Giancarlo Stanton to fly out to end the inning.
Matt Albers' outing was much more quiet compared to his other appearance, when he was a bit shaken up against the Braves. All he did in the 4th was strike out 2 in a 1-2-3 inning.
Rhiner Cruz tossed a 1-2-3 5th. Ditto for Darin Downs in the 6th. As did Kevin Chapman in the 8th.
Josh Zeid allowed a hit in a scoreless 7th, and Chia-Jen Lo finished it off (no save), allowing a hit and striking out 1.

Robert Ford and Steve Sparks were briefly discussing the Oscars in the 4th inning and they brought up Matthew McConaughey winning Best Actor. They mentioned that he graduated from Clements High School in Sugar Land. (He was actually raised in Longview, and graduated from Longview High.)
We're only 4 games into Spring Training, and we all know that spring statistics don't matter in the grand scheme of things. But, if you are a player who is looking to win one of the final roster spots on the 25-man Major League roster for Opening Day, would you have a different mindset?

YEAH BASEBALL!
Well, the wait is finally over. At long last, a beacon of hope shining in the throes of Old Man Winter. Baseball season is upon us. The Houston Astros opened up Grapefruit League play at Disney World and topped those darn Braves in a pretty fun affair, which took a brisk 3:39 to play.
W- Matt Albers (1-0)
L- Jordan Walden (0-1)
S- Chia-Jen Lo (1)
Home runs: None for Houston.
Starting Pitcher: Lucas Harrell
Lucas Harrell got the nod for this first game of spring training as he is looking to put the debacle that was his 2013 season far, far behind him. He pitched the first 2 innings and allowed a run on a bases-loaded walk in the 1st. 3 of his 4 walks came in that 1st inning. Harrell's 2nd was much more quiet, as he induced 2 groundouts and a foulball out after a leadoff walk. His one strikeout was in the form of Chris Johnson in the 1st.
Final line: 2 IP, H, ER, 4 BB, K, 3 groundouts, 0 flyouts

Matt Albers began his 2nd tour of duty with the Astros by coming out for the 4th. He allowed a run on a Freddie Freeman single, but at the same time got out of the inning as Brett Wallace and Matt Dominguez threw out Joey Terdoslavich to end the threat. Albers was shaken up a little bit on the play but left under his own power.
The next man up was Paul Clemens, and he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits (all but one was a single), walked 1, struck out 1, uncorked a wild pitch, and was called for a balk in his 2 innings of work. He bowed out by inducing a rather slick 4-6-3 double play from Tyler Greene to end the 6th inning, which got him out of a bases-loaded situation.
Darin Downs made his Astros debut, walking 1 in a scoreless 7th inning.
Rudy Owens, fresh off a stellar winter campaign in the Dominican Republic, pitched the 8th. He shook off a solo homer from Todd Cunningham to retire the side and preserved a 6-5 lead.
Chia-Jen Lo shut the door in the 9th in impressive fashion, finishing off with 2 strikeouts after getting Greene to fly out to lead off the inning. This was the first 1-2-3 inning from an Astros pitcher in the spring.
Offense
The Astros scored a touchdown with 2 runs in 3 different innings and tacked on the extra point in the 9th inning.
In his first plate appearance as a member of the Houston Astros, Dexter Fowler flied out to center. He would give the Astros the lead with a 2-run single in the top of the 2nd. Fowler also drew a walk in the 5th before giving way to Delino DeShields. This substitution turned out to be a turning point in the game.
DeShields wasted no time in leaving his mark on the game as he stole 2nd on the first pitch to Jose Altuve and advanced to 3rd when Altuve grounded out. He eventually scored on a double from Marc Krauss, who then made way for George Springer. Springer didn't hesitate to get in on the action as he stole 3rd and scored on a double from Chris Carter. Preston Tucker then emerged to pinch-run for Carter. The Astros would not relinquish the lead again after their half of the 5th.
The bench was emptied in the bottom of the 5th inning, and the prospects got their chance to show a little something. From that point on, DeShields was in center field, Springer was in right, and Tucker DH'd for the rest of the game. In addition, Max Stassi, J.D. Martinez, Jonathan Meyer, Jonathan Singleton, Marwin Gonzalez, and Carlos Correa were subbed in.
Correa singled to kick off the 6th, advanced to 3rd on a Stassi double, and scored on a DeShields groundout. Marwin then sent a double down the left-field line to score Stassi. In the 9th, Springer drew a 1-out walk, swiped his 2nd bag of the night, and scored on a Tucker single to give the Astros that vital insurance run.
Marc Krauss went 2-3 and was the only Astro with a multi-hit night. George Springer notched his first 2 steals and scored his first 2 runs of this calendar year.
Dustin's Random Observations
Normally I would be freaking out over the pitchers issuing 9 walks, but... this is the 1st spring training game. It's way too early for me to be pulling my hair out over that.
The bullpen competition will be incredibly stiff and probably won't be settled until the very end. Lo delivered a very strong opening argument for his case, and I (am getting ahead of myself) would not be surprised if he gets a few chances to close games during the course of the regular season.
I forgot who was on the mound at the time, but this was how Steve Sparks described his breaking ball.
Carlos Correa seems like he's simply unfazed. He's not even 20 yet but he carries himself with the poise of a 10+ year MLB veteran. Selfishly, I'm hoping he earns a spot on the Corpus roster for Opening Day.

LF Marc Krauss (26)
Krauss came to the Astros organization (along with Bobby Borchering) in a July 2012 trade with the Diamondbacks for 3B Chris Johnson. He split his season between Oklahoma City and Houston, making his major league debut in June. In 78 games at AAA, he hit .281/.401/.478 with 16 doubles, two triples and 10 home runs. In 52 games with the Astros, he hit .209/2.67/.366 with nine doubles and four home runs.

First signed by the Astros as a NDFA out of the Dominican Republic in 2001, Paulino was never quite able to put it together for Houston. In 34 starts over 47 appearances for the Astros in 2007, 2009 and 2010, Paulino went 6-21 with a 5.83 ERA and 1.598 WHIP. Traded to the Rockies for Clint Barmes in November of 2010, Paulino only spent a short time with the Rockies before being dealt to the Kansas City Royals.
CF Al Heist (died October 2, 2006 at 78)
Drafted from the Cubs in the 1961 expansion draft, Heist played in 27 games for the Colt 45's in 1962, hitting .222/.263/.236. He played for three more seasons for Houston in the minor leagues, but never made it back to the majors.
OF Alex Diaz (45)
Diaz signed as a free agent with Houston in January 1999. He played in 30 games for the Astros that season, hitting .220/.264/.320.
RHP Brandon Puffer (38)
Originally drafted by the Twins in the 27th round in 1994, Puffer first came to the Houston organization in 2000 after pitching in the Atlantic League. In 68 games for the Astros in 2002 and 2003, he was 3-3 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.611 WHIP.

Astros Minor League Recaps
Monday's Games - This is the one where Jayne starts getting cranky. If the Astros MiLB pitchers are going to phone it in, so am I, so short recaps today. Sounds harsh, but I have a headache and two days of nothing but losing is not helping!!!
Iowa over Oklahoma City 7-6
Phil Humber gave up a bunch of runs, like six times as many runs as the other four Astros pitchers combined. So there's that. Which means that Robbie Grossman's three-for-four game with two doubles, a triple, a walk, and a run was all for naught. As was Marc Krauss' three-for-four, double, home run, walk, two RBI and two runs scored. Grrrr.
San Antonio over Corpus 10-4
And then there's that whole R.J. Alaniz giving up six earned runs in one and a third innings thing. Did it really matter at that point that Jon Singleton went three-for-four with a double, RBI and a run, or that Jonathan Meyer hit a two-run home run? Not really, because they were behind the eight-ball at that point.
High Desert over Lancaster 8-3
And David, sweet David Rollins ... what are you doing to me? After a fantastic first inning, you forgot how to get an out in the second? Seven batters faced in the second without recording an out leading to seven earned runs from Rollins? It made the solo home runs from Nolan Fontana and Matt Duffy kind of worthless as well as Chris Epps' three-for-four outing with a double and a run.
Peoria over Quad Cities 5-1
And when Jamaine Cotton got lit up for five runs, the two singles each from Carlos Correa and Ruben Sosa and the one extra-base hit, a double from Roberto Pena, just didn't go very far.
DSL Astros at DSL Dodgers - Suspended due to rain after 3 innings with the Astros leading 4-0 (BUT AT LEAST THEY WERE AHEAD!!!)
Players of the Day: I am giving this to Robbie Grossman and Marc Krauss, who not only had very good outings, but also came very close to overcoming the pitching struggles for their team.
Pitcher of the Day: I will hand it to Tyson Perez. He did come in and give Lancaster four scoreless innings of two-hit ball, walking one and striking out four. See, it can be done guys.

Astros Minor League Recaps
Saturday’s Games
Lansing Lugnuts 2, Quad Cities River Bandits 3
The River Bandits didn't score a run until the fifth inning
at Modern Woodmen Park, but solid pitching kept them in the hunt and they went
on to win at home. Lance McCullers started the match and through five, recorded
one run (0 ER) on two hits, walked one and struck out five. Daniel Minor (2-0)
took the win after entering the game in the sixth. Minor gave up just two hits
of his own, striking out six of the ten batters he faced. John Neely earned his
third save after coming on in the ninth and giving up a run on three hits. Quad
Cities had just three hits all night, but thanks to forcing a few errors and
crafty baserunning it was plenty. Austin Elkins didn't even record a hit in the
game (0X2 2BB), but after reaching on a fielding error, he advanced to second,
stole third and scored for the third and final run of the game off of a RBI
groundout by Jesse Wierzbicki (0X3 RBI).
Inland Empire 66ers 10, Lancaster JetHawks 7 (10)
This was a roller-coaster ride of a game Saturday at The
Hangar. The JetHawks came out to an early, five-run lead, but by the ninth were
tying the game via the long ball to force extra innings. Chris Devenski took
the hill to start at home Saturday and through the first four was in excellent
form, recording 1-2-3 innings in the second, third and fourth frames. Devenski
pitched through the fifth and recorded three runs on two hits, a walk, five Ks
and hit a batter on the night. Brady Rodgers came on for the next three and
earned his third hold. Despite giving up eight hits, all singles, Rodgers
allowed just one run and struck out a pair. Travis Ballew took the hill in the
ninth and blew his first save of the season, allowing two runs on two hits
while striking out a pair of his own. Jonas Dufek (0-1) took the loss after
allowing four more runs on four hits in the tenth inning, he struck out one.
Zach Johnson had a productive night swinging the bat. Johnson hit three-for-four
with two runs scored, two doubles, two RBIs, a walk and a solo shot in the
ninth inning to tie the game and force extra innings. Telvin Nash hit
two-for-five and recorded a run scored and RBI on his own solo shot in the
tenth. Unfortunately, this was the only offense the JetHawks managed in extras.
Corpus Christi Hooks 11, Frisco RoughRiders 0
Corpus Christi didn't score after the third inning on
Saturday, but when you are riding an 11-run lead after three frames and your pitching tandem
records 11 strikeouts through nine shutout innings, it's usually not too hard
to hold on to the lead. Bobby Doran (3-0) started on the bump and through his
five frames allowed four hits, three walks and struck out four, earning him his
third win of the year. Nick Tropeano finished out the game and collected his
third tandem-save. Trope' gave up three hits and K-ed seven during his shift.
On the offensive side of the plate Kiké Hernandez had a giant game, hitting
three-for-five with a three-RBI triple in the first inning. Hernandez also
scored two runs. George Springer went two-for-four at the dish with two runs
scored and an RBI coming by way of his Texas League-leading, seventh homerun.
Here's the rest of the box, just for fun:
New Orleans Zephyrs 1, Oklahoma City RedHawks 11
OKC put up 11 runs of their own on Saturday and went on to
win back-to-back games at home. Jordan Lyles (2-2) took the win after pitching
the first five and allowing the opposition's only run on 3 hits. Lyles also
walked a pair and struck out twice as many. Wes Musick (H, 3), C.J. Fick and
Eric Berger came on, respectively, after Lyles to pitch, all giving up a hit
and a walk and all but Berger recording two Ks. Brett Wallace hit just
one-for-four Saturday, but his one hit was his second homer of the year, a
two-out solo shot in the eighth inning. Marc Krauss hit a homer as well, a
two-run shot in the fifth. Krauss finished two-for-four with those two RBIs,
two runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases. Jonathan Villar and Andrew
Simunic both hit two-for-four with doubles in the game. Villar had two RBIs and
Simunic walked once.
Player of the Day: It's a tie between Zach Johnson and
Superman, Mark Krauss. These guys accounted for something like 8 runs on
Saturday among all the offense and personally I'm a little scared of them. So,
if you honestly think one of them did better, you can tell them.
Pitcher of the Day: Trope' takes the cake after what can
only be described as "whoopin' up on" Frisco Saturday. Tropeano
struck out seven guys in the game and now has 29 Ks on the season. More
impressive, he has only issued five walks in the same time and in three starts
as the second half of a tandem he has K-ed 17 without issuing a single walk.

After the trade, Krauss simply tore it up in Corpus Christi, hitting .414/.514/1.000 with two doubles, five home runs and 16 RBI in seven games before a quick promotion to Oklahoma City. Krauss didn't fare quite as well at AAA, hitting .123/.203/.123 in 22 games for the Redhawks.

Minor League Recaps
Thursday's Games
DSL Rays over DSL Astros 12-11
Posted late - no time for a recap (plane to catch) but Mesac Laguna hit a grand slam in the 10-run 8th inning. Of course, the Astros still lost.
GCL Astros over GCL Cardinals 10-4
Jandel Gustave got the start but only pitched 1.1 innings and gave up four runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks. Ricardo Batista, Jose Montero, Krishawn Holley and Rodney Quintero took it the rest of the way with scoreless relief. Down 4-1 through three innings, the Astros bats kicked it into high gear, collecting a total of 14 hits to come from behind. Juan Santana (4x5 2-2B 3RBI R), Carlos Correa (3x5 RBI R) and Wallace Gonzalez (2x4 RBI 2R) had particularly good days at the plate. Correa made an error on a missed catch, his 11th error of the season.
Kingsport over Greeneville 7-4
Kingsport got five runs off Francis Ramirez in the first two innings which turned out to be all they needed. Cristian Garcia provided 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Tanner Bushue got pegged for two runs in his three innings but they were unearned and he struck out seven which is a very encouraging sign after this season's struggles. Scott Zuloaga pitched a perfect ninth. The Astros were held to five hits, but three of them were for extra bases including a Brian Blasik RBI triple and doubles from D'Andre Toney and Angel Ibanez.
Tri-City over Batavia 6-2
Aaron West went to 6-0 for the season with yet another great outing. In six innings, he gave up one run on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts and his ERA increased to 1.05. Travis Ballew and Kenny Long combined for scoreless relief before giving way to Juan Minaya who gave up the final Batavia run. Tied 1-1 after the top of the sixth, Tri-City broke things open by scoring five runs over the next two frames. Austin Elkins hit a solo shot early, his fourth of the season; Jobduan Morales was three-for-four with a double and an RBI; Tyler Heineman, Preston Tucker and Ryan Dineen each had two hits on the night; and Jarrod McKinney had two RBIs.
Stockton over Lancaster 6-3
Blair Walters went to 0-2 on the season as he was roughed up for the second time in as many starts. Walters gave up six runs (5 earned) on five hits, including two home runs, and three walks. Carlos Quevedo and Andrew Robinson were both scoreless in relief but the damage had already been done and Lancaster couldn't quite make it back on top. The top of the order had a good night with Alex Todd going three-for-five, George Springer hitting his 22nd home run and Erik Castro going two-for-five with an RBI.

Ross Seaton and Erick Abreu each allowed four runs and that proved to be too steep a hill for the Hooks to climb despite Marc Krauss providing four RBIs on two home runs (four home runs in his first three games as a Hook). Drew Locke said, "Don't forget about me," as he went three-for-five with a double, home run and two RBIs of his own, as did Robbie Grossman with a two-for-five, two double outing.

Jose Cisnero has now had two terrific starts since his promotion to AAA. He gave up one run on five hits and two walks in seven innings with seven strikeouts to earn his second win in as many starts. Juan Abreu and Mark Hamburger capably preserved the one run game out of the bullpen. Travis Buck was two-for-five with an RBI; Mike Hessman was one-for-four with his 29th home run and two RBIs; Matt Dominguez was two-for-four; and Chris Wallace was one-for-three with a two run double.
Lexington over Asheville 9-5
It wasn't the prettiest win, but Luis Ordosgoitti went to 5-3 for the season with a 5.2 inning, eight hit, four run (three earned) outing. Evan Grills allowed the final run in his 2.1 innings of work, and Gabriel Garcia pitched a scoreless ninth. Lexington took charge early and held on. Home runs from Zach Johnson and Brandon Meredith and a triple from Delino DeShields set the tone. Johnson was two-for-five with three RBI (to bring his season total to 94) and Meredith was two-for-five with two RBI. Nolan Fontana stole two bases and Meredith swiped one. With the win, Lexington has taken sole possession of second place in the division, trailing Rome by five games in the second half standings. The bad news is that Rome has won 11 in a row so Lexington has their work cut out for them.
Pitchers of the Day: If Aaron West keeps pitching the way he has been, he will undoubtedly be my pitcher of the day approximately every five or so days. He will have to share the podium with Jose Cisnero, though, who has made quite a statement since his promotion to Oklahoma City.
Players of the Day: You've got to love the still 17-year old Juan Santana going four-for-five with two doubles and three RBI. He is hitting .364/.364/.515 in his last 10 games. Marc Krauss' two two-run home runs has him sharing the gold medal.

Johnson was two-for-five with three RBI (to bring his season total to 94) and Meredith was two-for-five with two RBI. Nolan Fontana stole two bases and Meredith swiped one. With the win, Lexington has taken sole possession of second place in the division, trailing Rome by five games in the second half standings. The bad news is that Rome has won 11 in a row so Lexington has their work cut out for them.
Pitchers of the Day: If Aaron West keeps pitching the way he has been, he will undoubtedly be my pitcher of the day approximately every five or so days. He will have to share the podium with Jose Cisnero, though, who has made quite a statement since his promotion to Oklahoma City.
Players of the Day: You've got to love the still 17-year old Juan Santana going four-for-five with two doubles and three RBI. He is hitting .364/.364/.515 in his last 10 games. Marc Krauss' two two-run home runs has him sharing the gold medal.

Chris Johnson Trade
3B Chris Johnson was traded to the Diamondbacks for OF Marc Krauss and IF Bobby Borchering. (Borchering has actually been playing OF this season, but the Astros have listed him as an IF in the release so they may be planning on moving him back to the 3B/1B which he played earlier in his career.)
Bobby Borchering is currently listed as #11 on Jonathan Mayo's list of Arizona's top 20 Prospects. He is a switch-hitting slugger with plus power and a high strikeout rate. Baseball America had him ranked at #10 in the Diamondbacks system coming into 2012 noting he has "as much raw power as anyone in the system." He was recently promoted from Hi-A to AA.

The lefty hitter started out strongly in his pro career but had a significant drop-off in 2011 causing him to repeat the AA level where he is having some success this season, including being named a Southern League All-Star. According to both sources, his bat remains a question mark.
