The Aces struck first in a crucial series featuring the top two teams in the PCL's Pacific Northern division.

Trent Thornton took the loss despite a solid outing; he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 8 in 6 innings of work. Jacob Dorris and Kevin Comer both pitched an inning out of the bullpen; Dorris allowed a 2-run homer to Evan Marzilli and struck out 1 in the 7th, while Comer allowed a hit and fanned 1 in a scoreless 8th inning.

Tony Kemp went 2-5 and scored the only Fresno run on a Preston Tucker groundout in the 3rd. Colin Walsh had the only other hit for the Grizzlies.

Kent Emanuel faces Matt Koch at 1:05 Pacific.

Springfield 12, Corpus Christi 5

The Cardinals stormed out of the gate with 5 in the 1st and left Corpus in the dust.

Josh James failed to get out of the 1st inning, and I think I'll leave it at that. Nick Hernandez was the first man out of the Hooks bullpen and went 3.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 1. Alex Winkelman was next, and he allowed 5 runs (4 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 7 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5 in 3.2 innings. Ralph Garza Jr. got the final out of the 8th, but not before he issued a bases-loaded walk that allowed one of the runners he inherited from Winkelman to score.

Corpus scored twice in the 2nd as Ramon Laureano hit an RBI single and Jason Martin stole home. Ryne Birk led off the 4th inning with a homer, and then Tony Nuñez followed with a double and moved to 3rd on an error. He scored on a Laureano triple. Laureano trotted home on a Kyle Tucker double. He (3B, 2 RBI, R, SB) and Nuñez (2B, 2 R) both finished with 3 hits on the night. Birk and Jamie Ritchie had 2 hits apiece.

The Hooks and Cardinals will wrap up the series at 2:10 as Akeem Bostick takes on Austin Gomber.

Down East 5, Buies Creek 1

L- Jorge Alcala (4-5, 6-5 season)

BC home runs: Randy César (2, 5 season; solo in 6th)

Jorge Alcala was knocked around by the Wood Ducks once again; he gave up 4 runs in his previous outing, which also came against Down East. This time around, he allowed 5.

Alcala allowed 7 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 2. Matt Bower stopped the bleeding with 4 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 7.

Randy César homered to start the 6th, which was Buies Creek's only scoring play. Yordan Alvarez doubled twice; he now has 4 consecutive 2-hit games.

Carson LaRue goes up against Kyle Cody in the series finale. First pitch is at 2:00 Eastern.

Wisconsin 8, Quad Cities 5

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos managed to tie the game at 2 with a run in the top of the 7th, but the Rattlers quickly regained control with a run of their own in the bottom of the 7th and then they blew this game open with 5 in the 8th.

Daz Cameron smacked a triple with one out in the 2nd inning and scored the first run of the game when Josh Rojas grounded out. Luis Payano drew a one-out walk in the 7th and scored what was the tying run when Kristian Trompiz ripped a double. As mentioned above, Wisconsin quickly untied the game and seized all the momentum. Quad Cities did pull 3 runs back in the top of the 9th as Payano scored on a Ronnie Dawson double and a couple of errors allowed Dawson and Chuckie Robinson to score. Wander Franco finished 2-4, while Payano scored twice.

Nathan Thompson went 5 innings and the two runs he allowed both came on solo homers. He allowed two other hits and struck out a career-high 8 batters during his time on the mound. The Timber Rattlers ran roughshod on Dustin Hunt in his 2.2 innings; he allowed 6 runs on 7 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5. Devon Carr recorded the final out of the 8th inning.

Tri-City 4, Brooklyn 1

TC home runs: Bryan de la Cruz (1, 2 season; solo in 1st)

The ValleyCats got themselves back above the .500 mark with a win to start this series.

Leovanny Rodriguez allowed 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4 over 4 scoreless innings. Diogenes Almengo went 2 innings and allowed the only Brooklyn run on 2 hits and walked 2. Matt Ruppenthal pitched the final 3 innings, allowing 4 hits while striking out 3.

Bryan de la Cruz led off the bottom of the 1st with a homer that opened the scoring. Adrian Tovalin hit a 2-run single in the 3rd. De La Cruz, who finished 2-4, scored the first run of the game... and he scored the last run of the game when he came home on a single from Miguelangel Sierra in the 7th inning.

Pulaski 11, Greeneville 3

Greeneville home runs: Roman Garcia (7, 2-run in 4th)

The Appy Astros had a rough day in the field and on the mound.

Roman Garcia was one of the few bright spots on offense as he whacked a 2-run homer in the 4th inning. Frankeny Fernandez went 2-4 and ripped an RBI double in the 8th. Oscar Campos also went 2-4 with a double.

Maikel Sepulveda went 3 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2. Noel Pinto was the first man out of the Greeneville bullpen and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in the 4th. Francisco Villegas came out for the 5th, but he only got two outs in the inning, one via strikeout. On the other hand, he allowed 5 runs, all unearned, a grand slam, and walked 4. Willy Collado stopped the bleeding by allowing 2 hits and striking out 5 over 3.1 scoreless innings.

Greeneville starts a 3-game series with Bristol at 6:00 Eastern.

GCL Nationals 4, GCL Astros 0

How does a team win a game where they have more errors than runs scored? By holding their opponent to zero runs.

All the Palm Beach Stros got on offense were singles from Juan Piñeda, Jose Carrillo, and Ramiro Rodriguez.

Freylin Garcia pitched alright, although he had to take a loss. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5 in 5 innings of work. Saul Martinez allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and walked 2 in 2 innings, and Chauncey Nuñez walked 1 and struck out 1 in a scoreless 8th.

DSL Astros Blue 4, DSL Rays1 2

Blue home runs: None.

Team Blue snatched the win in this game by scoring twice in each of the final two innings.

Ronaldo Urdaneta put the Blue team in the board and in front with a 2-run single in the 8th. Rhandall Sanchez ripped a double to lead off the 9th and Wilyer Abreu joined him on the bases after getting plunked. Sanchez ended up scoring on a wild pitch and Abreu scored on a Leonardo Gonzalez groundout.

Bryan Solano allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4 over 5 shutout frames. Angel Ortega went 3.2 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 5, and struck out 4. Christopher Javier came on with 2 runners on in the bottom of the 9th, but he induced a force out to end it.

Game 1: DSL Rays2 2, DSL Astros Orange 1

Team Orange almost stole game 1, but they left two runners on scoring position to end it.

Sean Mendoza's RBI single in the bottom of the 7th was their only hit.

Jesús Bernaez went 4 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. An error following a force out in the 2nd inning resulted in the run. Miguel Matos allowed an unearned run, walked 3, and struck out 1 in 3 innings. Another error in the 5th resulted in the other Rays run.

Game 2: DSL Rays2 4, DSL Astros Orange 2 in 8 innings

Orange home runs: None.

Team Orange actually got no-hit in game 2, but they somehow managed to push a couple of runs across.

Deury Carrasco walked with 2 outs in the 1st and scored by stealing his way around the bases. Euclides Chavez scored on an error that allowed Carrasco to reach in the 8th. Carrasco now has 29 stolen bases on the season.

Elian Rodriguez allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 5, and struck out 2 in 3.1 innings. Ronny Garcia got the last two outs of the 4th, one via strikeout. Fabricio Reina and Luis De Paula threw 2 innings apiece; Reina allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 3, while De Paula allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2.

The Cubs took control with 3 runs in the 5th. Fresno managed to threaten in the 8th, but couldn't push the tying run across.

The Grizz scored a pair in the 4th on a Jon Kemmer double; Kemmer wound up scoring on an error following a Max Stassi single. Jack Mayfield hit an RBI single in the 5th, and Drew Ferguson ripped an RBI double in the 8th. Mayfield finished 4-5 with a stolen base (2, 9 season).

David Martinez went 4.1 innings and allowed 4 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Jumbo Diaz got the last two outs of the 5th, but not before allowing a run of his own (in addition to Martinez's 2 runners scoring) on a bases-clearing double and walking 1. Jacob Dorris allowed a hit, walked 3, and struck out 3 over 2 scoreless, and Dayan Diaz worked around a hit and a couple of walks to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 1.

Trent Thornton will start the first game of a 4-game set with El Paso. He'll face Michael Kelly at 7:05 Pacific.

Frisco 7, Corpus Christi 6

The Hooks had to settle for a split as a late rally fell just short. Tough night in the field as a couple of Corpus errors in the 3rd turned into 3 Frisco runs.

Yoanys Quiala went 3.2 innings and allowed 4 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5. Ryan Thompson was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and went 2.2 innings, allowing a 2-run homer, one other hit, and striking out 1. Nick Hernandez got the last 1.2 innings and struck out 1; the one hit he allowed was a solo homer to Juremi Profar.

Jamie Ritchie had a huge night that started when he smacked a solo homer to open the scoring in the 2nd inning. He singled to lead off the 5th but was forced out at 2nd base. He ripped a one-out double in the 7th, advanced to 3rd on a balk, and scored on a wild pitch.

Ritchie completed the cycle with a bases-clearing triple in the 8th inning. He stumbled halfway between 2nd and 3rd, but the throw from the outfield went home first, which allowed him to narrowly get into 3rd base. He'd score on a Ryne Birk single that cut the deficit to one run. Kyle Tucker went 2-4 on the evening.

Corpus has Monday off, so they'll be able to catch up on some sleep on the bus ride back and they can sleep for a good part of the day after they arrive. They'll begin a 3-game series with Tulsa on Tuesday.

Buies Creek 9, Carolina 1

W- Hector Perez (6-4, 7-5 season)

BC home runs: None.

Hector Perez dominated and the Buies Creek offense dominated as they swept the road portion of this half-and-half series to take 3 of 4 from the Mudcats.

Perez allowed 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6 over 6 shutout frames. Carolina spoiled the shutout with a run-scoring groundout against Sebastian Kessay in the 9th. Kessay went 3 innings and allowed a double, walked 1, and struck out 5.

Yordan Alvarez opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning. Stephen Wrenn scored the other 1st-inning run on a double play. Buies Creek got a pair of RBI doubles in the 4th from Randy César and Carmen Benedetti. Rodrigo Ayarza ripped an RBI double of his own in the 6th.

If it wasn't a laugher by then, the Carolina Stros certainly turned it into one with 4 more runs in the 7th to push their lead to 9-0. Wrenn singled to lead off the inning and eventually came home when Anthony Hermelyn beat a double play attempt. César added an RBI single to his ledger, and then Benedetti ripped another RBI double. Anibal Sierra capped off the scoring with an RBI single.

César (2B, 2 RBI, 3 R) and Alvarez (RBI, R) both finished with 3 hits on the day. Wrenn (2 R) and Benedetti (2 2B, 2 RBI) both went 2-5.

Jorge Alcala will start the first in a 3-game series in Salem that starts Tuesday. He'll go up against Mike Shawaryn.

Quad Cities 6, Beloit 5

QC home runs: Chuckie Robinson (11, 2-run in 3rd)

Beloit thought that they forced extra innings with a pair of runs in the 9th to tie the game at 5.

Their presumption was incorrect.

Abdiel Saldaña turned in a bare minimum quality start (oops, I did it again), allowing 6 hits, walking 1, and striking out 7. Devon Carr allowed 2 hits and struck out 5 over 2 scoreless, and Jesús Balaguer allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in the 9th inning.

5 of the 6 Quad Cities runs came in the 3rd inning. Ronnie Dawson started it off by doubling to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. One batter later, Chuckie Robinson smacked a 2-run homer to open the scoring. It didn't take long for the Banditos to get some more traffic on the bases; Troy Sieber drew a walk and Abraham Toro-Hernandez singled to bring up Daz Cameron, who ripped a double that sent Sieber home. Josh Rojas followed with a sac fly. Daz advanced to 3rd on a fly ball out and scored on Luis Payano's single. This was Quad Cities' only scoring inning until the 9th.

Sieber hit a one-out single and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. Toro was the second out of the inning. Daz got a free pass to 1st, which brought Rojas to the plate, and he came through with the winning hit to bring Sieber in. Rojas finished 3-4 on the day, while Robinson (2-R HR) and Daz (2B, RBI, R) had 2 hits apiece.

Tri-City 9, Aberdeen 3

After the Ironbirds scored a pair in the top of the 5th to take a 3-2 lead, the ValleyCats responded with 2 in the bottom of the 5th to retake the lead and then they busted this game open with 5 after stretch time.

Matt Ruppenthal pitched 3 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 5, and struck out 4. Colin McKee was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen and went 2 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned), an RBI single, walking 3, and striking out 4. Nathan Thompson allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 4 over 4 scoreless for the win.

Jonathan Arauz tripled to lead off the 2nd and scored the game's first run on a Kyle Davis sac fly. With two outs in the 4th, Andy Piñeda kept things going by reaching on an error that allowed him to advance to 2nd base. He then stole 3rd (12) and scored on a Bryan De La Cruz single. Mike Papierski's 2-run blast in the 5th gave Tri-City a 4-3 lead.

Papierski walked to begin the 7th, advanced to 3rd on a Jake Adams double, and scored on a single from Arauz. Kyle Davis walked to load the bases. Piñeda went down on the infield fly rule, but De La Cruz hit an RBI single to bring Adams home. Arauz scored on a wild pitch, and J.J. Matijevic capped off the evening with a 2-run single.

De La Cruz finished 3-5 on the afternoon, while Matijevic (2 RBI, SB) and Arauz (3B, RBI, 2 R) both finished with 2 hits.

Greeneville 2, Burlington 1

The Appy Astros started a new series by walking off with a win.

Frankeny Fernandez opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 6th. It looked as though this game would head to extras after the Royals got two quick outs in the 9th, but Patrick Mathis had other ideas. He singled to keep the game alive and moved to 3rd on a Gilberto Celesino single. Celestino moved to 2nd on defensive indifference, and then Mathis scored the winning run on an error. Celestino extended his hitting streak to 9 games with the single.

Humberto Castellanos allowed 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4 over 5.1 shutout innings. Johsson Arias allowed an unearned run on a sac fly in the 7th, a double, walked 2, and struck out 3 in 2.2 innings. Ian Hardman worked around a couple of walks to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 1.

Leovanny Rodriguez goes up against Nathan Webb in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

The Palm Beach Stros couldn't quite claw their way back from a 7-2 deficit.

Juan Pablo Lopez allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3 in 5 innings. Devin Raftery pitched the 6th and allowed 4 unearned runs on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Nivaldo Rodriguez allowed a run on 2 hits, one of which was a solo homer, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 3 innings of work.

Ozziel Sanchez-Galan opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 3rd inning and advanced to 3rd base on the throw from the outfield. He would end up scoring on a passed ball. Vicente Sanchez led off the 6th by legging out a bunt single and scored thanks to three consecutive wild pitches. Jonathan Matute, who was in the batter's box the at the time, ended up drawing a walk. César Cortez drew a walk and they both advanced on another wild pitch. Matute scored on an Enmanuel Valdez groundout, while Cortez scored on the fifth wild pitch of the inning. Wander Franco ripped an RBI double in the 8th. Sanchez-Galan (2B, RBI, 2 R) and Carlos Machado both finished with 2 hits on the day.

Results for Tuesday, July 11, 2017

Tri-City and the complex-league teams were the only clubs in action on a quiet Tuesday on the farm.

Fresno is off until Thursday

The 2017 AAA All-Star Game will take place on Wednesday, July 12, at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Washington, home of the Tacoma Rainiers. Fresno will be represented by D.J. Fisher and Colin Moran.

Fresno returns to action on Thursday; Moran and Fisher don't have to go anywhere (provided that they're still with the team) because the Grizzlies will kick off the second half of their season with a 4-game series in Tacoma.

Corpus Christi was off

The Hooks are in Midland and they'll start a 4-game series at 6:30. Alex Winkelman will face Dustin Hurlbutt.

Buies Creek was off

Hector Perez takes on Reid Love as the Carolina Stros start a 4-game series with Frederick at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities was off

The Banditos will begin a 3-game series in South Bend at 7:05 Eastern. TBA goes up against Dylan Cease.

The ValleyCats put up 5 in the 3rd and 2 more in the 8th for good measure, while three pitchers combined on a shutout.

Hunter Martin allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 over 4 innings. Parker Mushinski was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen and allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 in 3 innings. Nathan Thompson completed the shutout by walking 1 and striking out 4 over the final 2 innings.

Luis Payano opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 3rd. Two batters later, Abraham Toro drove in 2 on a bloop single. Jake Adams followed by whacking a 2-run homer. In the 8th, Payano scored on a wild pitch and Mike Papierski capped off the evening with a sac fly. Payano finished 2-3 on the evening.

The Palm Beach Stros launched 3 homers to score their 4 runs and came out on top.

Jose Benjamin put the GCLstros on the board with a 2-run homer in the 1st inning. Ozziel Sanchez-Galan and Enmanuel Valdez launched solo shots in the 3rd and the 4th, respectively. Valdez and Juan Piñeda both finished 2-4 on the day. Benjamin also stole a base, his 5th of the eseason.

Chad Donato allowed 2 hits in his 2 innings, one of which was a solo homer to Robbie Coman in the 2nd inning. Donato also recorded 3 strikeouts on the day. The Blue team tied the game with 3 in the bottom of the 7th, but the Red Sox regained control with 4 in the top of the 11th.

Nerio Rodriguez hit his first career homer, a 2-run blast in the 2nd inning, to put the Blue team on the board. Nerio then scored the first run in the 7th on a wild pitch after walking to lead off the inning. Yeuris Ramirez scored on a Luis Coronel groundout, and Anthony Rodriguez scored on another wild pitch.

Jean Reyes and Manny Ramirez started off with 3 innings apiece. Reyes allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and struck out 2 while Ramirez allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Oscar Severino was next, and he allowed 2 hits while striking out 3 over 4 scoreless. Christopher Javier didn't allow a hit in the 11th, but the Red Sox still tagged him for 4 runs, 3 of which were earned. He issued a bases-loaded walk, hit another man with the bases loaded, balked in another run, and allowed a sac fly.

The Orange team had more hits, but last I checked, hits do not determine the winner of a baseball game.

Deury Carrasco's RBI single in the 1st was Team Orange's only scoring play. Ramiro Rodriguez and Renaigel Martis both went 2-4.

Miguel Matos allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 2 innings. Ernesto Jaquez and Jose Alberto Rivera pitched 3 innings apiece; Jaquez was the first man out of the Orange team's bullpen and allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5. Rivera allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 3.

The Grizzlies walked off with a win to begin a new series.

Teoscar Hernandez led off the bottom of the 2nd inning with a walk. He advanced to 3rd on a Jon Singleton single and scored the first run of the evening on a passed ball. Tyler White led off the 6th with a home run, and then Teoscar followed with a single. Just like the 2nd inning, he moved over to 3rd on a Singleton single and scored on a Jon Kemmer single. The Isotopes tied the game at 3 with a run in the 7th inning, and that's where it stood heading into the bottom of the 9th. It didn't last very long, since Max Stassi led off the inning by whacking a home run to end the game.

Mike Hauschild went 6.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 10. Kevin Chapman was the first man out of the bullpen, and in an inning (final out of 7th, 2 outs in 8th), he walked 1 and struck out 1. Jordan Jankowski allowed a hit and recorded the final out of the 8th inning. Josh Fields walked 1 and struck out 1 in a scoreless 9th.

Brad Peacock will start game 2 of this series. He'll take on Harrison Musgrave at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 4, Frisco 3

CC home runs: Nick Tanielu (5, 9 season; solo in 7th), Danry Vásquez (2, solo in 8th)

Corpus held off a Roughriders rally in the top of the 9th to escape with a victory.

Edison Frias turned in another solid performance on the mound, allowing just one run on 5 hits, walking 1, and striking out 5 in 7 innings of work. Aaron West threw a scoreless 8th, but Frisco got to him for 2 runs (both unearned) on a couple of singles in the 9th inning. He struck out 1 in 1.2 innings. Albert Minnis got a groundout for the final out of the game.

J.D. Davis drove in the first run of the game with a groundout in the 1st inning and scored on an error following a Danry Vásquez double in the 6th inning. Nick Tanielu led off the bottom of the 7th with a home run, and Danry struck again in the 8th with a solo home run. He and D.J. Fisher both finished 2-4 on the evening.

In game 3 of this series, Keegan Yuhl will take on Richelson Peña. First pitch is at 7:05.

High Desert 9, Lancaster 8

The JetHawks nearly came back from a 6-0 deficit, but... no cigar.

Johnny Sewald put Lancaster on the board with an RBI triple in the 3rd and scored on a Tony Nuñez groundout. Marc Wik added an RBI single in the 4th. Sewald led off the 5th with a double, and Nuñez brought him home with a single. Nuñez wound up scoring himself on a passed ball later in the inning. Jamie Ritchie scored in the 6th inning on a force out, and in the 7th, he drove in a run with a groundout. Later in the 7th, Wik added another RBI single to his ledger. Sadly, Lancaster's comeback bid ended there.

Sewald finished a home run shy of the cycle. Wik and Keach Ballard had 2 hits apiece for the Hawks.

Alex Winkelman went 2.2 innings and allowed 6 runs on 3 hits (3-run homer) and walked 6. Kevin McCanna tagged in for 3.1 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits (solo homer) and struck out 1. Dean Deetz pitched the final 3 innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4.

Akeem Bostick will take on Jeffrey Springs in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 6:05 Pacific.

Dayton 3, Quad Cities 2

A solo homer in the top of the 9th put Dayton ahead and thwarted the Banditos' bid to sweep the series.

Elieser Hernandez threw 6.1 absolutely filthy innings for the River Bandits. He allowed 2 runs on 3 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out a career-high 14. Zac Person was the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen, and in 1.1 scoreless innings, he walked 1 and struck out 3. Ralph Garza Jr. pitched the final 1.1 innings, and the one run he allowed came in the form of a solo homer hit by James Vasquez in the top of the 9th. He allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 2.

Quad Cities' two runs came in the bottom of the 7th. Connor Goedert ripped an RBI double, and Pat Porter scored when Bobby Wernes grounded into a double play. Goedert's double was their only extra-base hit of the evening.

Tonight, Quad Cities will welcome the Bowling Green Hot Rods to Modern Woodmen Park. Jose Luis Hernandez will start the opener, and he'll face Roel Ramirez at 6:00. Ramirez is another Texas kid in the Minors; he is a native of Laredo.

Staten Island 13, Tri-City 7

The ValleyCats couldn't withstand the Baby Bombers' offensive onslaught.

Chuckie Robinson opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 1st inning. In the 5th, an error allowed Alex De Goti and Tyler Wolfe to score, and Carmen Benedetti grounded into a force out that scored Ryne Birk. In the 7th, Benedetti added a sac fly and Birk scored on an errant pickoff throw. De Goti, who finished 2-4 and scored 4 runs, scored Tri-City's final run of the evening on an error that allowed Benedetti to reach. He was the only player in the ValleyCats lineup with a multi-hit game.

Agapito Barrios went 3.2 innings and allowed 5 runs on 5 hits (3-run homer) and struck out 4. Carlos Sierra allowed a run on 3 hits in 1.1 innings. Austin Nicely was next, and in 2.1 innings, he allowed 5 runs (3 inherited runners charged to him) on 6 hits (solo homer) and walked 1. Howie Brey recorded the final 2 outs of the 8th, but not before he allowed 2 runs of his own, a 3-run homer, walked 1, and struck out 1.

Tri-City will look to avoid the sweep at 6:00 Eastern.

Greeneville 2, Bristol 1

The Appy Astros were solid on the mound, and Miguelangel Sierra continued his power binge.

Sierra led off the 1st inning with his 9th home run of the season. The Pirates tied the game at 1 in the 5th, but Greeneville quickly regained the lead in the 6th as Marcos Almonte tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Almonte finished 2-4 and also hit a double.

Three pitchers threw 3 innings for Greeneville. Nathan Thompson started it off, and he allowed a hit and struck out 2. Tyler Britton was next, and he allowed an unearned run on 2 hits and fanned 6. Salvador Montaño's 3 frames were perfect, and he capped off the win by striking out 4.

Abdiel Saldaña will start game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 6:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 6, GCL Marlins 3

The Kissimmee Stros doubled up the Marlins in a game that had quite a bit of significance for a first-round pick.

Forrest Whitley made his professional debut, and he allowed a run on a single, walked 1, and struck out 2 in the 1st inning. No GCL pitcher went more than 2 innings in this game. Yeyfry Del Rosario and Yhoan Acosta followed Whitley with an inning of their own; Del Rosario allowed a run on an error, a triple, and walked 1 in the 2nd, and Acosta walked 1 and struck out 1 in a scoreless 3rd. Juan Robles allowed a hit and fanned 1 in 2 innings. Gabriel Valdez and Hansel Paulino each pitched an inning. Valdez allowed a run on a sac fly and a double in the 6th, while Paulino worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 7th. Leovanny Rodriguez pitched the final 2 innings, walking 1 and striking out 3.

Carlos Machado drove in the Kissimmee Stros' first run of the day with a groundout in the 1st. He added an RBI triple to his ledger in the 3rd and scored on a Brody Westmoreland sac fly. Machado and Westmoreland were responsible for the offensive production; they both recorded 3 RBI. Machado grounded into a force out that scored Cristopher Luciano, and Westmoreland hit an RBI single in the 4th. Westmoreland added another RBI single to his ledger in the 6th inning. Wilson Amador finished a home run shy of the cycle, while Andy Piñeda went 2-5 with a double and 2 runs scored.

DSL Astros Blue 5, DSL Marlins 3

Blue home runs: None.

The Blue team scored 3 in the 6th to take the lead. They wreaked havoc on the bases, going 9-10 on their stolen base attempts.

Alfredo Angarita and Nicolás Miranda successfully executed a double steal in the 1st and an error allowed the two of them to score. Angarita hit an RBI single in the 6th. Nestor Tejada laid down a sac bunt that allowed Ozziel Sanchez-Galan to score the go-ahead run, and Miranda added an RBI single. Angarita finished 2-5 with 3 stolen bases (13), while Miranda had 2 hits and 2 stolen bases (5).

Jheyson Caraballo allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and struck out 6 in 4 innings. Robert Corniel allowed an unearned run, walked 2, and struck out 1 in the 5th. Johsson Arias walked 5 and struck out 5 over 3.2 scoreless innings, and Juan Cuevas got the final out of the game.

The Rangers tied the game in the 8th and walked off with the win.

Both teams scored 2 in the 2nd; the Orange team's 2 runs came on a pair of RBI doubles from Vicente Mota and Yeuris Ramirez. In the 3rd, Kendy Moya scored on a wild pitch and Gilberto Celestino scored on an error. Celestino, who finished a homer shy of the cycle, tripled in the 5th and scored on the ensuing error. Mota whacked a solo homer in the 6th.

Humberto Castellanos went 2.1 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Jose Antonio Hernandez, Luis Castro, Cristofer Melendez, and Yohan Ramirez all pitched 1.2 innings. Hernandez was first, and he allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and fanned 2. Castro had 2 inherited runners charged to him; he also allowed a hit and walked 3. Melendez allowed an unearned run, a hit, walked 3, and struck out 1, and Ramirez allowed a hit and struck out 1.
