A Conversation with Astros Scout Jim Stevenson

The one constant that I’ve found throughout my years of writing about baseball is this. Baseball people love to talk about baseball. This was definitely the case last week when I talked with Astros Scout Jim Stevenson. A professional scout since 1994, Stevenson previously scouted for Cleveland and Milwaukee and has been with the Astros since November of 2007, a remarkable tenure given the comings and goings of Astros staff over the last several years.

The 2007 draft was, in my mind, the worst draft in Astros history prompting a change to the scouting department. Bobby Heck was brought in as Director of Scouting under General Manager Ed Wade and Heck, in turn, brought in Stevenson to serve as an Area Scout. The five years in which Heck and Stevenson worked side by side were productive years, culminating with 11 drafted players peppering the 2015 Astros postseason roster. In addition, several players drafted under Heck were traded for players instrumental to the success of that team.

Since coming to the Astros, Stevenson (who lives in Tulsa) has been the Area Scout for Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and north and west Texas (roughly north of I-20). He has had several success stories, but none quite so prominent as 2015 Cy Young winner LHP Dallas Keuchel. As a Friday night pitcher in the SEC, it isn’t surprising to Stevenson that Keuchel went on to have success in the big leagues, but he says, “At the same time, we didn’t get a whole lot of looks at him. I really banged the table for that one and Bobby was great. He trusted me.”

But Stevenson is very excited about another of his signings who he sees as having the chance to be a real impact player. Unfortunately, that impact will not benefit the Astros. Stevenson signed OF Ramon Laureano in the 16th round in 2014 out of Northeast Oklahoma A&M College (the Astros were the only team to actually call him to talk). Laureano was traded to the A’s in November 2017 for RHP Brandon Bailey (who was claimed by the Orioles in the Rule 5 Draft in December). Laureano went on to make his MLB debut in August 2018 and has since made quite an impression. As Stevenson puts it, “He was hurt last year and still hit .288 with 24 home runs.”

Laureano’s performance came as a surprise to a lot of people but not to Stevenson. Stevenson has a close bond with Laureano that is uncommon between scout and player. They still keep in close touch and it has given Stevenson the opportunity to really get to know the type of player and type of person Laureano is. Needless to say, Stevenson wasn’t a fan of the trade.

Laureano had struggled badly to start the 2017 season in AA. According to Stevenson, Laureano was his own worst enemy in that he was putting so much pressure on himself to succeed and, in retrospect, getting invited to big league camp that year probably added to the pressure he was feeling. At this point, some in the Astros front office had cooled on Laureano, but Stevenson felt that the team had overlooked the X factor of Laureano’s makeup. “That’s what separates the guys who get to the big leagues and stick and the guys who don’t. It’s the makeup. We knew he had great makeup. Hinch called him a machine in Spring Training that year,” said Stevenson. Despite Laureano’s turnaround later in the season, the Astros chose to make a trade within their division that may very well come back to haunt them.

The period from August 2018 through August 2019 was a particularly gratifying time for Stevenson as five players he signed made their major league debuts. Four of those five were from the 11th round or lower. “Your success when you look at yourself and you pride yourself in who have you drafted and gotten to the big leagues and then second, who have you drafted and gotten to the big leagues that was a later round pick. Those are the guys that really give you pride and make you want to go out and work harder at finding other ones,” said Stevenson. In addition to Laureano (16th round), Stevenson also signed RHP Dean Deetz (11th round, September 2018 debut); RHP Josh James (34th round, September 2018 debut); IF Jack Mayfield (NDFA, May 2019 debut); and 3B Abraham Toro (5th round, August 2019). Stevenson continued, “I was blessed. Toro was a fifth rounder, but still he was from a juco, a Canadian kid, not a real high profile guy. That five guys went to the big leagues over two years was pretty special. It never happens.”

Of those debuts, Mayfield is definitely the best feel-good story of the bunch. Stevenson “begged and begged and begged” to take Mayfield all day on Day 3 of the draft in 2013, but he went unsigned. According to Stevenson, he kept after (former Astros Director of Decision Sciences) Sig Mejdal about Mayfield, “I said, Sig please, just sign this kid. He’s a great player. His makeup’s off the charts. He’s bilingual. His teammates will love him. His coaches will love him.” Ultimately Stevenson prevailed in getting Mayfield signed as a non-drafted free agent. “He was always a really good player. You want to talk about just a baseball player. His tools don’t stand out. Nothing he does is great. But what he does, he brings his A game every night. He makes all the plays that he’s supposed to make. And he’s got some pop in his bat. And he’s always liked being there in the moment, the guy that you want up at bat. At all the levels, he’s like the team MVP that goes unrecognized every year with every club. And he’s one of the greatest human beings in baseball,” said Stevenson.

I also asked Stevenson if there was a player that stood out as one who got away and he told me a very entertaining story about A.J. Burnett. Back when Burnett was drafted in 1995, the scouting world was a lot different than it is now. Stevenson described the days before social media, before the showcase events when “you carried a pocketful of dimes and quarters” because you relied on payphones to make phone calls. “You went and found guys on your own. And now everyone knows who the top kids are. It’s on social media. It’s on twitter. It’s on the baseball blogs. Now you know who the kids are,” said Stevenson. But in the mid 90’s it was different.

On scouting Burnett, Stevenson said, “I thought this is a guy that I’m going to get. Nobody knows about him and it’s (only) weeks before the draft. He comes out of a tiny little Christian school in the middle of Arkansas.” At that time, only a few small college coaches had seen Burnett plus a bird dog scout for the Royals who “couldn’t keep a secret” and tipped Stevenson off. “I went and saw him and I was like, oh my God. You can dream on this guy all you want. He was only (throwing) 90, 91, nothing great, but the kid was 6’4” or 6’5”. You could just dream on him. His arm worked. He could spin the curveball. He had a feel for the changeup. But he was so immature on the mound. He had no idea what he was doing. He was green.” Even so, Stevenson had seen enough that he called for his crosschecker to take a look at Burnett.

Stevenson continued the story, “So now it’s three weeks before the draft. I kid you not. A.J. was great that day (when the crosschecker came to see him). If you watched his mannerisms during the game … he was playing air guitar on the mound … you have to overlook all that. He didn’t even know what professional baseball was. I was working with the Cleveland Indians at the time. I was the area guy. And I sat down and talked to him and we had a great talk and I really got to know him.” Stevenson went back to see Burnett for one last game, got to the parking lot and saw the Scouting Director for the Mets. “And I’m thinking, Oh my God, what is he doing here? He and the area guy are going to see another guy in Arkansas. They were at the wrong field and happened to stumble into this kid by accident. Everything I had in me was kind of deflated. That was the guy that I thought, I’ve got this one for sure. They ended up taking him in the 8th round that year.”

“That was before the internet and all this stuff that goes on now where everyone knows who everyone is. And that was the fun of it when we started. You had to go find your own. Now they give me a list of a hundred guys and (tell me to) go find some juco guys if you want to. They give me all the top high school names and the top D1 guys (to scout). We don’t have any information on the juco guys and we don’t have any information on any D2, D3 guys so those guys I can go find on my own. But that’s what it used to be like in the whole draft. Now you go to high school games with the top tiers, there are 50-60 guys there (scouting).”

Scouting has changed a lot with the advance of analytics, but it’s not just the Astros. The changes are industry wide. Scouts are encouraged to turn in reports on as many players as they can with the front office doing more of the "sifting out" than the area scouts do. The scouts still look for the unheralded players out there, but the scout’s influence in getting players signed has diminished somewhat. Stevenson’s opinion still counts, but maybe not as much as it did in the pre-analytics days. But that won’t stop him from looking for that diamond in the rough, that guy that nobody knows about. It won’t stop him from banging the table on Day 3 to get a Josh James or a Jack Mayfield signed.

Stevenson has just rolled with all of the changes in the industry. The fact that he has lasted 12 years in an Astros organization that has seen scores of people come and go is evidence enough that he must be doing something right. “I love the Houston Astros. I love all the guys I work with. It’s not the Houston Astros have changed. The whole industry has changed,” said Stevenson. He’s looking forward to working with the new GM, but most of all he’s looking forward to the draft. “Our Super Bowl is the draft. That’s what I’m looking forward to. I still enjoy the hunt, the hunt out looking for that guy. You may not get him, but I like finding that guy every year who’s flying under the radar. Those are the fun ones, the late round guys. I’m going to keep going and hopefully find some this year.”

>>>>>>><<<<<<<

I truly enjoyed my conversation with Stevenson. We ended up on so many tangents that I didn't even get to all of my questions. But I have a feeling I'll be talking with Stevenson again and can get some of those other questions answered plus others that may come up because baseball people love talking about baseball. Thanks for your time, Jim!

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Wednesday, August 23, 2017

Fresno was off

The Grizzlies welcome the Tacoma Rainiers to Chukchansi Park for their final home series of the 2017 season. David Martinez takes the mound in game 1, which starts at 7:05 Pacific.

Midland 8, Corpus Christi 4

W- Heath Fillmyer (10-4)
L- Framber Valdez (4-5, 6-8 season)

CC home runs: Ramon Laureano 2 (9; solo in 6th, solo in 8th), Kyle Tucker (13, 22 season; solo in 4th)

The Hooks launched 3 homers, but they were all solo shots... they probably needed some more firepower in this one.

Ramon Laureano went 2-4 and launched two solo shots in the 6th and the 8th inning. Kyle Tucker smacked one in the 4th. Myles Straw went 2-4 with an RBI single in the 5th and stole a base, his first at the AA level. Straw now has 37 stolen bases this year.

Framber Valdez went 4.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 8 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 5. Ralph Garza Jr. allowed 4 runs on 3 hits and walked 3 in an inning of work. Nick Hernandez allowed one hit, a solo homer, in his 2.1 innings. Hernandez also walked 2 and struck out 4. Ryan Thompson worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 1.

Forrest Whitley takes on Casey Meisner at 7:05.

Buies Creek 7, Lynchburg 3

W- Abdiel Saldaña (1-0, 6-2 season)
L- Sean Brady (1-1)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros snapped their 4-game slide on Tuesday by scoring the last 7 runs of this game in response to a 3-run homer from the Hillcats in the top of the 1st inning.

Brett Adcock went 4 innings and Lynchburg's one scoring play was that homer. He went 4 innings and allowed one other hit, walked 3, and struck out 4. Kevin Hill struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 5th to bridge the gap to Abdiel Saldaña, who shut it down over the last 4 innings by walking 1 and striking out 5.

Buies Creek put up 4 in the bottom of the 1st thanks to a 2-run double from Randy César and a 2-run single from Anthony Hermelyn. César lashed another double in the 3rd and ended up scoring on an error that allowed Taylor Jones to reach. Alex De Goti doubled to lead off the 6th and came home on a sac fly from Ronnie Dawson. Jones capped off the evening with a sac fly in the 7th that scored César, who went 3-4 on the night. Yordan Alvarez went 2-4 and scored a run.

Hector Perez will start the series finale. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Beloit 3, Quad Cities 0

W- Zack Erwin (6-4)
L- Ronel Blanco (5-4, 5-5 season)

QC home runs: None.

For the first time since May 17, 2014, Quad Cities failed to record a hit in a baseball game.

Daz Cameron and Luis Payano both drew a walk.

Ronel Blanco allowed an unearned run on 2 hits, walked 5, and struck out 1 in 4.2 innings. Patrick Sandoval went 3.1 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4.

The Banditos and Snappers meet for the final time in 2017 at 7:00.

Connecticut 5, Tri-City 2

W- Oswaldo Castillo (2-2)
L- Carlos Hiraldo (1-5)
S- Drew Carlton (7)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats were done in by 4 errors on Tuesday.

Jake Meyers went 2-3 and scored both Tri-City runs, coming home on a Gabriel Bracamonte infield single in the 6th and again in the 8th on J.J. Matijevic's single.

Carlos Hiraldo went 4.1 innings and allowed 4 unearned runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 6 hits and struck out 7. Tyler Ivey was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen and allowed a run on 3 hits while striking out 5 in 3.1 innings of work. Luis Ramirez got the last out of the 8th.

The ValleyCats and Tigers will conclude their series at 7:05 Eastern.

Greeneville 4, Johnson City 1

W- Jairo Solis (1-1, 3-2 season)
L- Alvaro Seijas (4-2)
S- Tim Hardy (1)

Greeneville home runs: None.

The Appy Astros opened up a crucial series with a victory thanks to some fine pitching.

Jairo Solis won his first Appy League start by allowing an unearned run on 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 6 in 5 innings of work. Tim Hardy allowed 2 hits and fanned 8 over the final 4 innings to earn the save.

Greeneville scored twice in the 3rd on a Gilberto Celestino RBI single and a Roman Garcia sac fly and did so again in the 7th when Wilson Amador ripped an RBI double and came around to score on a single from Juan Piñeda. Amador went 2-3 and was the only player on either side to finish with a multi-hit game.

GCL Mets 3, GCL Astros 2 in 10 innings

W- Luis Mateo (1-3)
L- Brendan Feldmann (1-1)

GCL home runs: None.

The Palm Beach Stros scored twice in the opening frame... but that was all they could muster up on offense.

Hector Martinez and Angel Tejeda both drew bases-loaded walks in the 1st inning. Carlos Machado finished 2-4 and scored one of the runs.

Nivaldo Rodriguez went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. Devin Raftery was the first man out of the bullpen, allowing a hit and striking out 5 in 3 innings. Brendan Feldmann pitched 2.1 innings and allowed the winning run (which was unearned) on 2 hits and struck out 4.

DSL Athletics 7, DSL Astros Blue 2

W- Eliel Ramirez (3-1)
L- Jean Reyes (0-2)
S- Carlos Sanchez (4)

Blue home runs: None.

Kendy Moya went 2-4. Rhandall Sanchez and Leonardo Gonzalez scored on wild pitches in the 5th inning.

Jean Reyes pitched 2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 4, and struck out 2. Jervic Chavez allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, walked 4, and struck out 1 in 4 innings, and Christopher Javier allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1 in 2 innings.

DSL Rangers1 5, DSL Astros Orange 4

W- Domingo Peña (1-0)
L- Jose Alberto Rivera (2-3)
S- Ediberto Encarnacion (2)

Orange home runs: None.

Both teams scored 4 runs in the 6th... but the Rangers also scored a run in the 4th.

Gerry Castillo and Renaigel Martis hit RBI singles in the 6th and they both scored on Sean Mendoza's single. Michael Garcia went 2-4.

Jose Alberto Rivera allowed a solo homer, which was the only hit he allowed in 3.2 innings. He also walked 2 and fanned 5. Christian Mejias allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (3-run homer), walked 3, and struck out 5. Yulian Frontado allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 over 2 innings.

Results for Tuesday, August 22, 2017

Let's... finish up a game and play another in Connecticut!

Reno 3, Fresno 1

W- Jared Miller (3-2)
L- Reymin Guduan (5-6)
S- Silvino Bracho (6)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Aces stunned the Grizzlies with 3 runs in the 7th.

Tony Kemp went 2-4 and drove in Fresno's only run with an RBI single in the 5th.

Mike Hauschild allowed 3 hits, walked 7, and struck out 4 over 5 shutout innings. Kevin Comer worked around a couple of hits to throw a scoreless 6th, striking out 2. Reno got to Reymin Guduan and Jumbo Diaz after stretch time. Guduan only recorded one out, allowing 2 runs on a homer and one other hit. Diaz got the last two outs of the 7th, but not before allowing a run on 2 hits. Jacob Dorris threw a 1-2-3 9th, striking out 1.

The Grizzlies have Wednesday off. They'll welcome Tacoma to Chukchansi Park for their final home series of the 2017 season beginning Thursday.

Corpus Christi 5, Midland 1

W- Yoanys Quiala (3-4, 8-5 season)
L- Grant Holmes (10-12)

CC home runs: Ramon Laureano (7, 2-run in 4th), Kyle Tucker (12, 21 season; 2-run in 5th)

The Hooks launched a pair of 2-run shots to top the RockHounds on Tuesday.

Corpus also played host to some rehabbing Astros as they look to get back to full strength for September. Tony Sipp, Will Harris, and Michael Feliz all started off with a scoreless inning. Sipp walked 1 and struck out 2 in the 1st inning, Harris threw a 1-2-3 2nd and got two groundouts and a strikeout. Feliz worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 3rd, striking out 1. He walked Jorge Mateo, who got caught stealing to end the inning.

Yoanys Quiala followed with 5 innings and allowed a run on a solo homer, 5 other hits, and walked 1. Riley Ferrell struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th inning.

Ryne Birk opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 2nd inning. Ramon Laureano smacked a 2-run homer in the 4th and Kyle Tucker whacked one of his own in the 5th. Laureano finished 2-3 and scored twice. Evan Gattis caught 7 innings; at the plate, he walked twice and scored a run.

Framber Valdez faces Heath Fillmyer at 7:05.

Lynchburg 6, Buies Creek 3

W- Dominic DeMasi (6-3)
L- Elieser Hernandez (4-4, 5-4 season)

BC home runs: Randy César (3, 6 season; solo in 8th)

The Carolina Stros fell behind early and couldn't quite recover.

Elieser Hernandez allowed 5 runs on 6 hits and struck out 9 in 6 innings. Carlos Sierra allowed a run on a sac fly, a double, walked 1, and struck out 4 in his 3 innings.

Jake Rogers tripled to lead off the 2nd and scored on a Carmen Benedetti groundout. Rogers added an RBI single to his ledger in the 3rd, and Randy César launched a solo homer in the 8th. Rogers, Taylor Jones, and Ronnie Dawson all finished with 2 hits on the night. Dawson was making his Carolina League debut.

Brett Adcock takes on Sean Brady in game 2. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 4, Beloit 1

W- Salvador Montaño (7-3)
L- Sam Sheehan (3-2)

QC home runs: Abraham Toro-Hernandez (8, 14 season; solo in 8th)

The Banditos got a solid night from their pitchers to take the first game of this series. With this victory, Quad Cities' magic number is now down to 2.

Carlos Sanabria went 5.2 innings and allowed an unearned run on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 8. Salvador Montaño shut it down by allowing 2 hits and striking out 7 over the last 3.1 innings.

Josh Rojas put Quad Cities on the board with an RBI single in the 4th. Rojas scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the 7th and Wander Franco, who was hitting at the time, extended the lead with an RBI single. Abraham Toro-Hernandez launched a homer to start off the 8th.

Ronel Blanco goes up against Zack Erwin in game 2. First pitch is at 7:00.

From June 30: Connecticut 2, Tri-City 1

W- Burris Warner (1-0)
L- Diogenes Almengo (0-2)

TC home runs: None.

The Tigers scored the only two runs of the game after play resumed.

Carlos Hiraldo and Corbin Martin both threw 4 innings; Hiraldo did that almost 2 months ago and allowed 2 hits while striking out 4. Martin came on after play resumed and allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Diogenes Almengo allowed a single in the 9th and an error allowed the runner to advance to 3rd, and then a sac fly allowed the runner to score; the run was unearned.

Kristian Trompiz's RBI single in the 4th inning back on June 30 turned out to be Tri-City's only scoring play.

Connecticut 1, Tri-City 0

W- Dean Aldridge (1-0)
L- Colin McKee (1-4)
S- Drew Carlton (6)

TC home runs: None.

Both teams had 3 hits, but the Tigers had the only run.

Bryan De La Cruz, Gabriel Bracamonte, and Kyle Davis all singled.

Brandon Bielak allowed 2 hits and struck out 3 over 4 scoreless innings, while Colin McKee allowed the only run on a single, walked 1, and struck out 4 in 2 innings. The run was unearned.

Game 2 of this series begins at 7:05 Eastern.

Bristol 7, Greeneville 3

W- Max Kranick (1-0)
L- Humberto Castellanos (4-1, 6-1 season)
S- Alex Manasa (1)

Greeneville home runs: Brody Westmoreland (8, solo in 2nd)

The Appy Astros suffered a costly series loss to the Appalachian League's worst team.

Brody Westmoreland smacked a solo homer in the 2nd inning. Gilberto Celestino hit an RBI single in the 3rd and it turned into a Little League home run thanks to an error. Celestino and Westmoreland both went 2-4.

Chad Donato allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out a career-high 9 in 3.2 innings. Juan Corniel was the first man out of the Greeneville bullpen and allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 4 in 2.1 innings. Humberto Castellanos allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 in 2 innings, and Noel Pinto threw a 1-2-3 9th, striking out 1.

Greeneville will begin what is probably their biggest series of the season in Johnson City; the Cardinals are currently two games ahead of the Appy Astros in the standings. Remember... in the Appalachian League, the top two teams in each division are the playoff teams. Jairo Solis takes on Alvaro Seijas in game 1. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

DSL Astros Blue 8, DSL Royals 3

W- Flaer Gonzalez (3-1)
L- Carlos Sanchez (1-1)

Blue home runs: None.

Team Blue and the Royals scored in the same number of innings, but the Blue team's three crooked numbers topped the Royals' single tallies.

Angel Macuare struck out 4 over 3 perfect innings. Manny Ramirez, Flaer Gonzalez, and Jonger Ochoa all pitched 2 innings; Ramirez was first, and he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Gonzalez followed by allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 1. Ochoa allowed a run on 3 hits and fanned 1.

There weren't really any offensive standouts, but Leonardo Gonzalez did reach in all four of his plate appearances, finishing 2-2 with a couple of walks, one of which came with the bases loaded in the 7th inning.

DSL Pirates 6, DSL Astros Orange 5 in 10 innings

W- Wilmer Contreras (5-1)
L- Cristofer Melendez (0-3)

Orange home runs: None.

The Orange team scored a run in the 8th to tie the game at 3, but the Pirates regained control in the first extra frame. Team Orange managed to cut the deficit to one run... but no cigar.

Renaigel Martis hit an RBI single in the 3rd. Euclides Chavez tripled in the 4th and ended up scoring on a wild pitch. Gerry Castillo hit an infield single and an error on the play allowed Kelvin Perez to score. Perez started the 10th in scoring position and scored on another error that allowed Deury Carrasco to reach. Carrasco scored on a sac fly from Castillo.

Carlos Perdomo went 3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 4, and struck out 4. Ronny Garcia technically struck out the side in the 4th, but one of his victims managed to reach base safely. He also induced a groundout. Asael Uribe followed with 4 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 4, and struck out 6. Cristofer Melendez threw 2 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1.

Could Team Orange get their doubleheader in without any weather issues?

Reno 4, Fresno 1

W- Kaleb Fleck (2-2)
L- Trent Thornton (6-4, 7-6 season)
S- Erik Davis (3)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Aces struck first in a crucial series featuring the top two teams in the PCL's Pacific Northern division.

Trent Thornton took the loss despite a solid outing; he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 8 in 6 innings of work. Jacob Dorris and Kevin Comer both pitched an inning out of the bullpen; Dorris allowed a 2-run homer to Evan Marzilli and struck out 1 in the 7th, while Comer allowed a hit and fanned 1 in a scoreless 8th inning.

Tony Kemp went 2-5 and scored the only Fresno run on a Preston Tucker groundout in the 3rd. Colin Walsh had the only other hit for the Grizzlies.

Kent Emanuel faces Matt Koch at 1:05 Pacific.

Springfield 12, Corpus Christi 5

W- Corey Littrell (1-2)
L- Josh James (4-6)

CC home runs: Ryne Birk (4, 12 season; solo in 4th)

The Cardinals stormed out of the gate with 5 in the 1st and left Corpus in the dust.

Josh James failed to get out of the 1st inning, and I think I'll leave it at that. Nick Hernandez was the first man out of the Hooks bullpen and went 3.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 1. Alex Winkelman was next, and he allowed 5 runs (4 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 7 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5 in 3.2 innings. Ralph Garza Jr. got the final out of the 8th, but not before he issued a bases-loaded walk that allowed one of the runners he inherited from Winkelman to score.

Corpus scored twice in the 2nd as Ramon Laureano hit an RBI single and Jason Martin stole home. Ryne Birk led off the 4th inning with a homer, and then Tony Nuñez followed with a double and moved to 3rd on an error. He scored on a Laureano triple. Laureano trotted home on a Kyle Tucker double. He (3B, 2 RBI, R, SB) and Nuñez (2B, 2 R) both finished with 3 hits on the night. Birk and Jamie Ritchie had 2 hits apiece.

The Hooks and Cardinals will wrap up the series at 2:10 as Akeem Bostick takes on Austin Gomber.

Down East 5, Buies Creek 1

W- Brett Martin (2-8)
L- Jorge Alcala (4-5, 6-5 season)

BC home runs: Randy César (2, 5 season; solo in 6th)

Jorge Alcala was knocked around by the Wood Ducks once again; he gave up 4 runs in his previous outing, which also came against Down East. This time around, he allowed 5.

Alcala allowed 7 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 2. Matt Bower stopped the bleeding with 4 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 7.

Randy César homered to start the 6th, which was Buies Creek's only scoring play. Yordan Alvarez doubled twice; he now has 4 consecutive 2-hit games.

Carson LaRue goes up against Kyle Cody in the series finale. First pitch is at 2:00 Eastern.

Wisconsin 8, Quad Cities 5

W- Daniel Brown (5-3)
L- Dustin Hunt (0-7)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos managed to tie the game at 2 with a run in the top of the 7th, but the Rattlers quickly regained control with a run of their own in the bottom of the 7th and then they blew this game open with 5 in the 8th.

Daz Cameron smacked a triple with one out in the 2nd inning and scored the first run of the game when Josh Rojas grounded out. Luis Payano drew a one-out walk in the 7th and scored what was the tying run when Kristian Trompiz ripped a double. As mentioned above, Wisconsin quickly untied the game and seized all the momentum. Quad Cities did pull 3 runs back in the top of the 9th as Payano scored on a Ronnie Dawson double and a couple of errors allowed Dawson and Chuckie Robinson to score. Wander Franco finished 2-4, while Payano scored twice.

Nathan Thompson went 5 innings and the two runs he allowed both came on solo homers. He allowed two other hits and struck out a career-high 8 batters during his time on the mound. The Timber Rattlers ran roughshod on Dustin Hunt in his 2.2 innings; he allowed 6 runs on 7 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5. Devon Carr recorded the final out of the 8th inning.

Kit Scheetz gets the start in game 3. He'll take on Victor Diaz at 1:05.

Tri-City 4, Brooklyn 1

W- Matt Ruppenthal (2-1)
L- Luis De Los Santos (0-5)

TC home runs: Bryan de la Cruz (1, 2 season; solo in 1st)

The ValleyCats got themselves back above the .500 mark with a win to start this series.

Leovanny Rodriguez allowed 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4 over 4 scoreless innings. Diogenes Almengo went 2 innings and allowed the only Brooklyn run on 2 hits and walked 2. Matt Ruppenthal pitched the final 3 innings, allowing 4 hits while striking out 3.

Bryan de la Cruz led off the bottom of the 1st with a homer that opened the scoring. Adrian Tovalin hit a 2-run single in the 3rd. De La Cruz, who finished 2-4, scored the first run of the game... and he scored the last run of the game when he came home on a single from Miguelangel Sierra in the 7th inning.

Alex House goes up against Jose Geraldo at 5:00 Eastern.

Pulaski 11, Greeneville 3

W- Gilmael Troya (4-2)
L- Maikel Sepulveda (0-1, 4-4 season)

Greeneville home runs: Roman Garcia (7, 2-run in 4th)

The Appy Astros had a rough day in the field and on the mound.

Roman Garcia was one of the few bright spots on offense as he whacked a 2-run homer in the 4th inning. Frankeny Fernandez went 2-4 and ripped an RBI double in the 8th. Oscar Campos also went 2-4 with a double.

Maikel Sepulveda went 3 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2. Noel Pinto was the first man out of the Greeneville bullpen and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in the 4th. Francisco Villegas came out for the 5th, but he only got two outs in the inning, one via strikeout. On the other hand, he allowed 5 runs, all unearned, a grand slam, and walked 4. Willy Collado stopped the bleeding by allowing 2 hits and striking out 5 over 3.1 scoreless innings.

Greeneville starts a 3-game series with Bristol at 6:00 Eastern.

GCL Nationals 4, GCL Astros 0

W- Nelson Galindez (2-2)
L- Freylin Garcia (0-2, 1-7 season)

GCL home runs: None.

How does a team win a game where they have more errors than runs scored? By holding their opponent to zero runs.

All the Palm Beach Stros got on offense were singles from Juan Piñeda, Jose Carrillo, and Ramiro Rodriguez.

Freylin Garcia pitched alright, although he had to take a loss. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5 in 5 innings of work. Saul Martinez allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and walked 2 in 2 innings, and Chauncey Nuñez walked 1 and struck out 1 in a scoreless 8th.

DSL Astros Blue 4, DSL Rays1 2

W- Angel Ortega (3-2)
L- Jeremy Galan (3-1)
S- Christopher Javier (4)

Blue home runs: None.

Team Blue snatched the win in this game by scoring twice in each of the final two innings.

Ronaldo Urdaneta put the Blue team in the board and in front with a 2-run single in the 8th. Rhandall Sanchez ripped a double to lead off the 9th and Wilyer Abreu joined him on the bases after getting plunked. Sanchez ended up scoring on a wild pitch and Abreu scored on a Leonardo Gonzalez groundout.

Bryan Solano allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4 over 5 shutout frames. Angel Ortega went 3.2 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 5, and struck out 4. Christopher Javier came on with 2 runners on in the bottom of the 9th, but he induced a force out to end it.

Game 1: DSL Rays2 2, DSL Astros Orange 1

W- Emilio Alfonzo (5-0)
L- Jesus Bernaez (2-5)
S- Rodolfo Sanchez (4)

Orange home runs: None.

Team Orange almost stole game 1, but they left two runners on scoring position to end it.

Sean Mendoza's RBI single in the bottom of the 7th was their only hit.

Jesús Bernaez went 4 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. An error following a force out in the 2nd inning resulted in the run. Miguel Matos allowed an unearned run, walked 3, and struck out 1 in 3 innings. Another error in the 5th resulted in the other Rays run.

Game 2: DSL Rays2 4, DSL Astros Orange 2 in 8 innings

W- Dauris Lopez (2-4)
L- Luis De Paula (2-1)
S- Ender Cespedes (2)

Orange home runs: None.

Team Orange actually got no-hit in game 2, but they somehow managed to push a couple of runs across.

Deury Carrasco walked with 2 outs in the 1st and scored by stealing his way around the bases. Euclides Chavez scored on an error that allowed Carrasco to reach in the 8th. Carrasco now has 29 stolen bases on the season.

Elian Rodriguez allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 5, and struck out 2 in 3.1 innings. Ronny Garcia got the last two outs of the 4th, one via strikeout. Fabricio Reina and Luis De Paula threw 2 innings apiece; Reina allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 3, while De Paula allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2.

Results for Sunday, July 23, 2017

Let's play two in Midland!

Fresno 11, Round Rock 8

W- Rogelio Armenteros (4-0, 6-3 season)
L- Tyler Wagner (1-9)
S- Dayan Diaz (2)

Fresno home runs: Jon Kemmer (15, solo in 6th), Teoscar Hernandez (12, 2-run in 5th), Preston Tucker (19, 2-run in 6th), Reid Brignac (13, solo in 7th)

The Grizzlies scored 10 of their 11 runs from the 4th-7th innings to take control of this game, and the outburst proved to be enough to withstand a late Express rally.

Rogelio Armenteros went 5.2 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits (3 solo homers), walked 1, and struck out 8. Brendan McCurry threw 1.1 innings as the first man out of the Fresno bullpen and issued a walk and hit another batter. Ashur Tolliver allowed a run on a sac fly, a single, walked 2, and struck out 1 in the 8th.

Reymin Guduan got 2 outs in the 9th via strikeout but also allowed 3 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 2 hits and walked 2. Dayan Diaz was greeted with an RBI single after coming on, but he was able to get the final out of the game.

J.D. Davis put Fresno on the board with an RBI single in the 2nd inning and added another one to his ledger in the 4th. Jon Kemmer smacked a solo homer in the 5th. D.J. Fisher followed with a single and Teoscar Hernandez sent him home with a home run.

The Grizz scored 4 in the 6th as Tony Kemp scored on a wild pitch following a triple, D.J. Fisher hit an RBI single, and Preston Tucker whacked a 2-run homer. Reid Brignac led off the 7th with a homer and Juan Centeno drove in the last Fresno run with an RBI single.

Davis went 3-5 on the night, while Kemp (3B, R), Fisher (RBI, 2 R), Teoscar (2-R HR, 2 R), and Big Tuck (2-R HR, 2 R) all finished with 2 hits.

David Martinez will be on the mound as Fresno looks for the sweep. First pitch is at 7:05 Eastern.

Game 1: Midland 12, Corpus Christi 2

W- Dustin Hurlbutt (3-1)
L- Franklin Perez (0-1, 4-3 season)

CC home runs: Ramon Laureano (6, led off game), Jason Martin (9, 16 season; solo in 4th)

The Hounds were unleashed on the Hooks in game 1 of the doubleheader.

Ramon Laureano led off the game with a homer and Jason Martin smacked a solo shot of his own in the 4th inning. Laureano had two of Corpus Christi's three hits in game 1; Martin's homer was the other one.

Franklin Perez went 4 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Nick Hernandez and Ryan Thompson pitched an inning apiece; Hernandez allowed 5 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in the 5th, while Thompson allowed a 2-run homer to Max Schrock in the 6th, one of 4 hits that he allowed in the inning. He also struck out 1.

Would the Hooks' fortunes turn out a little better in game 2?

Game 2: Midland 13, Corpus Christi 1

W- A.J. Puk (1-3)
L- Josh James (4-4)

CC home runs: None.

Nope.

Dex McCall went 3-3 and his RBI single in the 4th was the Hooks' only scoring play in game 2. He accounted for 75% of Corpus Christi's hits in this game, which were all singles; Jamie Ritchie had the other hit.

Josh James went 3.1 innings and allowed 5 runs (3 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Andrew Thome was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and went 1.2 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 3. Andrew Walter allowed 6 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 5 hits (2-run homer) and walked 1 while only getting one out in the 6th. Riley Ferrell got the last two outs of the 6th, one via strikeout, but not before allowing a 3-run homer to B.J. Boyd that also allowed the two runners he inherited from Walter to score.

Akeem Bostick gets the start as Corpus begins a 4-game series with San Antonio. He'll take on Enyel De Los Santos at 7:05.

Buies Creek 7, Carolina 1

W- Cionel Perez (1-0, 5-3 season)
L- Marcos Diplan (6-6)

BC home runs: None.

Buies Creek busted this game open early with a 5-run 3rd inning. Meanwhile, Cionel Perez and Justin Ferrell shackled the Mudcats offense.

Cionel allowed a run on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5 in 7 innings, and Ferrell finished it off by striking out all 6 Carolina hitters he faced.

Randy César scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the 2nd inning.

Yordan Alvarez singled with one out in the 3rd and scored the first run of the frame on a Jake Rogers double. Rogers came home on a Taylor Jones single. César singled and Spencer Johnson walked to load the bases for Alex De Goti, who ripped a 2-run double. Anibal Sierra added a sac fly. César capped off the scoring with a sac fly in the 4th.

Alvarez went 4-5 to bust out of his brief slump. César (RBI, 2 R) and De Goti (2B, 2 RBI) both finished 2-3.

Ryan Hartman takes the mound as the Carolina Stros begin a 3-game series with Winston-Salem. He'll go up against Bernardo Flores at 7:00 Eastern.

Great Lakes 6, Quad Cities 3

W- Dustin May (6-5)
L- Yohan Ramirez (2-3)

Carlos Sanabria pitched 5 innings and allowed an unearned run on a single, walked 2, and struck out 5. The Loons tagged Yohan Ramirez for 5 runs on 7 hits in his 3 innings; he also issued a walk, hit a batter, and struck out 3. Devon Carr got two flyouts and a popout in a 1-2-3 9th.

Tri-City 5, Vermont 4

W- Jesús Balaguer (1-1)
L- Marc Berube (2-1)

TC home runs: Jake Adams (6, solo in 6th)

The ValleyCats scored 4 of their 5 runs over the last 4 innings of this game to steal it from the Lake Monsters.

Juan Robles went 3.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Colin McKee was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen and allowed a run on a sac fly, a single, walked 4, and struck out 3. Jesús Balaguer walked 1 and fanned 3 over 2 scoreless to get the win.

Andy Piñeda reached on an error to lead off the 3rd and scored TC's first run on a J.J. Matijevic double. Jake Adams whacked a solo homer in the 6th. Tri-City tied the game in the 7th thanks to a Jonathan Arauz RBI double and an Adams groundout that allowed Kyle Davis to score. Arauz scored the go-ahead run on a Reid Russell groundout.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Sunday, July 9, 2017

Tough day for the Rookie ball clubs against their Mets counterparts.

Fresno is off until Thursday

The 2017 AAA All-Star Game will take place on Wednesday, July 12, at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, Washington, home of the Tacoma Rainiers. Fresno will be represented by D.J. Fisher and Colin Moran.

The Grizzlies return to action on Thursday; Moran and Fisher don't have to go anywhere (provided that they're still with the Grizzlies) because the Grizzlies will kick off the second half of their season with a 4-game series in Tacoma.

Corpus Christi 6, Arkansas 5

W- Framber Valdez (2-1, 4-4 season)
L- Peter Tago (0-3)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks went ahead with a couple of runs after stretch time. They also withstood a one-man show from Travs catcher Marcus Littlewood, who homered twice and drove in all 5 of Arkansas' runs.

Cy Sneed went 5 innings and allowed a 3-run homer to Littlewood in the 4th. He also allowed 6 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Framber Valdez pitched the last 4 innings and Littlewood took him deep for a 2-run homer in the 6th. Framber allowed one other hit, walked 2, and struck out 4.

Ramon Laureano doubled to start the bottom of the 1st and opened the scoring by coming home on a Garrett Stubbs double. Laureano doubled again to lead off the 3rd and scored on a J.D. Davis groundout. He then added two RBI singles to his ledger in the 4th and the 6th. Jason Martin scored the tying run on an error that allowed Arturo Michelena to reach in the 7th and Laureano struck once again with an RBI triple that turned out to be the difference.

That's right... Ramon Laureano finished 5-5 on the night; it's his first career 5-hit game, and he also stole a base (18). Laureano is now on a 5-game hitting streak and all of them have been multi-hit outings. It's been a tough year for Ramon, but he's doing what he can to right the ship and he's still out there competing every time his number is called. Jason Martin's two hits were both doubles.

Collin McHugh continues his rehab in the series finale and he'll be opposed by Brett Ash. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek 4, Down East 1

W- Justin Ferrell (7-3)
L- Johan Juan (0-1)

BC home runs: Jake Rogers (7, 13 season; 3-run in 8th)

Jake Rogers' homer in the 8th proved to be the difference as the Carolina Stros snatched a win in Kinston.

Forrest Whitley went 5 innings in his second Carolina League start and allowed a run on 5 hits while striking out 5. Justin Ferrell pitched the last 4 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 3.

Myles Straw walked to begin the game, stole 2nd, then scored the first run of the day on a Ryne Birk double. Yeyson Yrizarri hit an RBI double to tie the game at 1. There was one other scoring play in this game, and it was Rogers' 3-run blast in the top of the 8th to put Buies Creek in front. Birk (2B, RBI, R) and Alex De Goti (2B) both finished with 2 hits on the day. Straw now has 25 stolen bases on the season.

Brett Adcock will start the series finale and he'll face Emerson Martinez at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 9, Clinton 3

W- Gabriel Valdez (3-0)
L- Lane Ratliff (1-2)
S- Robert Corniel (1, 2 season)

QC home runs: Daz Cameron (9, 2-run in 2nd), Carmen Benedetti (3, solo in 2nd), Troy Sieber (1, solo in 5th)

The Banditos stormed out to an 8-1 lead after the first three innings and ended up cruising to the win.

Gabriel Valdez turned in a nice start, allowing 2 runs (both on solo homers) on 5 hits and striking out 8 in 6 innings. Robert Corniel finished it off by allowing a run on 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 3 in 3 innings of work.

Daz Cameron singled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and scored the first run of the evening on a Chuckie Robinson triple. Robinson wound up scoring on a single from Wander Franco. Jonathan Arauz singled to start off the 2nd and scored on Daz's 2-run shot. One batter later, Carmen Benedetti sent one out for a solo homer. Quad Cities got 3 more in the 3rd as Marcos Almonte hit an RBI single and Daz added a 2-run single to his ledger. Troy Sieber whacked a solo homer in the 5th for the last River Bandits run.

Everyone in the Quad Cities lineup had a hit; Daz went 3-5 out of the leadoff spot. Robinson (3B, RBI, R), Ronnie Dawson (R), and Almonte (RBI, R) all finished with 2 hits.

Quad Cities and Clinton will conclude their series at 6:35 as Yohan Ramirez takes on Brandon Miller.

Aberdeen 5, Tri-City 4

W- James Teague (1-0)
L- Jesús Balaguer (0-1)

TC home runs: Luis Payano (2, solo in 2nd)

The ValleyCats managed to claw back from an early 4-0 hole... only to see the Ironbirds walk off with a win for the second consecutive game.

Tyler Ivey didn't make it out of the 1st inning. He only got 2 outs and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Cristian Javier restored order with 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 9. Jesús Balaguer had the winning run charged to him on a walk-off squeeze play. He went 2 innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Diogenes Almengo couldn't extricate Balaguer from the bases-loaded predicament; he got the second out of the 9th, but then Aberdeen ran the squeeze to win the game.

Javier tied a career-high with those 9 strikeouts; he also struck out 9 in 4 innings as a member of the GCL Astros on July 18 of last year.

Luis Payano put Tri-City on the board with a solo shot in the 2nd inning. Mike Papierski doubled to lead off the 4th and scored on an error after Payano flew out. In the 6th, Andy Piñeda legged out a bunt single that scored Payano, and Miguelangel Sierra scored on a wild pitch. Payano, Piñeda, and Abraham Toro all finished with 2 hits on the evening.

Tri-City has Monday off. They'll start a 3-game series with the State College Spikes on Tuesday.

Kingsport 11, Greeneville 2

W- Jose Geraldo (2-1)
L- Bryan Abreu (0-2)

Greeneville home runs: None.

The Appy Astros briefly took the lead with a pair in the top of the 3rd, but it was all Kingsport in this one.

Greeneville's two runs came on RBI singles from Gilberto Celestino and Adrian Tovalin in the 3rd inning. Celestino and Cody Bohanek (2B) both finished 2-5.

Bryan Abreu went 3.1 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 4 hits (3-run homer), walked 4, and struck out 5. Adam Bleday was the first man out of the Greeneville bullpen and allowed 6 runs (5 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. Ian Hardman allowed 2 hits and walked 1 in his 2.2 innings.

Gerardo Bojorquez takes on Carlos Hernandez in the series finale. First pitch is at 6:30 Eastern.

GCL Mets 10, GCL Astros 3

W- Aneury Olivo (1-0)
L- Juan Pablo Lopez (0-2)
S- Jose Moreno (1)

GCL home runs: Jose Benjamin (1, solo in 2nd)

The Mets jumped out to a 7-1 lead after 4 innings. The Palm Beach Stros went 0-17 with runners in scoring position on Sunday.

Juan Pablo Lopez went 3 innings and allowed 7 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 3. Devin Raftery, Johsson Arias, and Saul Martinez all followed with 2 innings. Raftery walked 1 and fanned 3. Arias allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and struck out 1, and Martinez struck out 1 in a perfect outing.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Wednesday, July 5, 2017

Salt Lake 19, Fresno 7

W- Daniel Wright (4-4)
L- Casey Coleman (3-5)

Fresno home runs: Tyler White (14, 3-run in 1st), A.J. Reed (14, solo in 6th)

Well... all good things must come to an end. The Grizzlies' 12-game winning streak came to a close in rather unceremonious fashion.

Both teams scored 3 in the 1st; Fresno's 3 came on Tyler White's 14th home run of the season. In the 4th, Reid Brignac hit an RBI single and Juan Centeno scored when Tony Kemp hit into a fielder's choice. A.J. Reed smacked his 14th homer of the year to start the 6th, and Preston Tucker whacked an RBI triple in the 7th. Reed, Kemp, and Colin Moran all had 2 hits on the evening.

The Grizzlies pitchers.... well, they did not have a banner evening. I'll leave it at that.

The Grizzlies and Bees will wrap up their series at 7:05 Pacific as Dean Deetz faces John Lamb.

Corpus Christi 5, Northwest Arkansas 2

W- Kent Emanuel (4-5)
L- Corey Ray (5-5)

CC home runs: Ramon Laureano (4, solo in 3rd), Kyle Tucker (8, 17 season; solo in 5th)

After dropping 5 straight to the Arkansas clubs, the Hooks have taken the last two over them.

Collin McHugh's rehab continued. The two runs he allowed came on a homer hit by Samir Dueñez in the 4th inning. He allowed 2 other hits and struck out 5 in his 3.2 innings. Kent Emanuel shut it down with 5.1 scoreless, allowing 5 hits, walking 1, and striking out 7.

Ramon Laureano opened the scoring with a homer to start the bottom of the 3rd.  Later in the frame, Kyle Tucker scored on a Jon Singleton groundout and J.D. Davis came home when Jamie Ritchie hit into a fielder's choice. Little Tuck launched a solo homer in the 5th and capped off the evening with an RBI double in the 8th. He (2B, solo HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and Laureano (solo HR, BB) both finished with 2 hits and 2 runs scored on the evening.

Game 2 of this series features Akeem Bostick on the mound. He'll face Foster Griffin at 7:05.

Myrtle Beach 8, Buies Creek 7

W- Dakota Mekkes (1-0)
L- Nick Hernandez (0-1)
S- James Norwood (6)

BC home runs: Myles Straw (1, solo in 1st)

Nick Hernandez has been excellent all season for the Carolina Stros, but he toiled through a very uncharacteristic poor outing as the Pelicans got to him for a pair of runs in the 8th. Buies Creek got a run back in the 9th but couldn't get the tying run across.

Franklin Perez went 4.1 innings and allowed 5 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 12 hits (11 singles and a solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 4. Sean Stutzman was the first man out of the Buies Creek bullpen and allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 2.1 innings. Hernandez threw 1.1 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

Myles Straw wasted little time in getting things started; he led off the game with a homer. Later in the inning, Anthony Hermelyn added an RBI single that turned into a double play on the bases; Yordan Alvarez was thrown out at the plate trying to score another run and Hermelyn was cut down trying to sneak into 2nd base. In the 4th, Alex De Goti hit an RBI single and Straw added an RBI single to his ledger; an error on the play allowed Anibal Sierra to come home with another run. Hermelyn ripped a double and wound up scoring on a wild pitch in the 5th. Alvarez hit a sac fly in the 9th to cut the deficit to one run, but that was as close as Buies Creek got to tying the game.

Straw (solo HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) and Hermelyn (2B, RBI, R) both finished 3-4 on the night. Ryne Birk and Stephen Wrenn (2B) had 2 hits and scored a run apiece.

Ryan Hartman takes on Justin Steele in the series finale. First pitch is at 7:05 Eastern.

Quad Cities 3, Kane County 0

W- Carlos Sanabria (4-2)
L- Ryan Atkinson (2-4)
S- Erasmo Pinales (6)

QC home runs: Josh Rojas (3, solo in 2nd)

The Banditos extended their winning streak to 5 games with a shutout. They only had 3 hits, but they also scored the only runs of the game.

Josh Rojas smacked a solo homer in the 2nd and Chuckie Robinson ripped a 2-run double in the 6th. Tyler Wolfe's single was the only other Quad Cities hit.

Carlos Sanabria didn't have the cleanest outing, but he didn't allow any runs. He allowed 2 hits, walked 5, and struck out 5 over 5 shutout innings. Devon Carr and Erasmo Pinales completed the shutout with 2 scoreless innings apiece. Carr allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1, while Pinales allowed a hit and fanned 2.

The Banditos look to sweep the series at 6:35. Ronel Blanco faces Mack Lemieux, a distant relative of NHL legend Mario Lemieux.

Brooklyn 10, Tri-City 1

W- Gunnar Kines (1-2)
L- Carlos Hiraldo (0-2)

TC home runs: Miguelangel Sierra (1, solo in 7th)

The ValleyCats were buried early as they trailed 7-0 after the first two innings.

Miguelangel Sierra's solo shot in the 7th was Tri-City's only scoring play. Bryan De La Cruz went 2-3 with a triple.

Carlos Hiraldo only recorded one out in the 1st with a strikeout. He also allowed 5 runs on 7 hits. Diogenes Almengo was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen and went 3.2 innings, allowing 2 rusn (1 earned) on 5 hits and striking out 4. Hunter Martin went 3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Parker Mushinski was next, and he got 2 outs in the 8th, allowing a run on 2 hits, walking 3, and striking out 1. Ben Smith got the last out of the 8th with a strikeout and then threw a 1-2-3 9th, getting a popout and two groundouts.

Patrick Sandoval starts the series finale. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Greeneville 7, Johnson City 3

W- Humberto Castellanos (1-0, 2-0 season)
L- Edwar Ramirez (1-2)

Greeneville home runs: Adrian Tovalin (2, 2-run in 1st), Colton Shaver (1, solo in 2nd)

The Appy Astros got outhit 10-6, but they blew the Cardinals out of the water in the run column, which, last I checked, determines the winner of a baseball game.

Adrian Tovalin launched a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 1st to put Greeneville on the board and in the lead. Colton Shaver smacked a solo homer in the 2nd and added a 2-run single to his ledger in the 5th inning. Two batters before Shaver's single, Tovalin scored on an Oscar Campos sac fly. Campos scored on a Joan Mauricio groundout in the 7th. Shaver finished 3-3, accounting for half of Greeneville's hits on Wednesday.

Three pitchers appeared for the Appy Astros and all of them allowed one run during their time on the mound. Gerardo Bojorquez allowed 5 hits, walked 4, and struck out 1 in 4.1 innings. Humberto Castellanos allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 3.2 innings, and Ian Hardman allowed a hit, walked 3, and fanned 2 in the 9th.

Hansel Paulino takes the mound as Greeneville looks for the sweep. He'll face Alvaro Seijas at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 7, GCL Nationals 2

W- Elieser Hernandez (1-0, 3-3 season)
L- Jhonatan German (0-1)
S- Tanner Duncan (1)

GCL home runs: None.

Elieser Hernandez did well in his first rehab appearance and the Palm Beach Stros went off for 6 in the 4th to seize control.

In his first appearance since May 10 for Buies Creek, Hernandez allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4 in 6 innings. Tanner Duncan brought it home, allowing a run on 3 hits and striking out 2 in the final 3 innings.

Ronny Rafael ripped an RBI double in the 2nd to open the scoring. He reached on an error to open that big 4th inning.

Rafael scored the first run of the bottom of the 4th when Alfredo Angarita hit into a fielder's choice. An error on the play allowed Angarita to move to 2nd and Orlando Marquez to take 3rd. Juan Piñeda got plunked to load the bases, and Marquez ended up scoring on a wild pitch. César Cortez followed that up with a 2-run single. Cortez advanced to 3rd on an error that allowed Hector Martinez to reach and came home on a Carlos Machado single. Jose Benjamin walked to reload the bases and prompted a pitching change. Rafael went down on strikes, but Marquez hit an RBI single in his second plate appearance of the inning. Machado and Marquez both finished with 2 hits on the evening.

DSL Athletics 10, DSL Astros Blue 6

W- Miguel Alvarez (1-0)
L- Freylin Garcia (0-4)

Blue home runs: Ronaldo Urdaneta (2, 2-run in 7th)

The Blue team fell behind 8-1 but put up 5 runs in the final 3 innings to make the score a little more respectable.

Yorbin Ceuta walked in the 1st and scored the Blue team's first run on an error. Ronaldo Urdaneta went 2-3 and launched a 2-run homer in the 7th, and they got an RBI single in the 9th from Angel Tejeda and a 2-run single from Yeuris Ramirez, who went 2-4.

Freylin Garcia allowed 5 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2 in 3 innings. Jean Reyes got 2 outs in the 4th, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits, walking 3, and striking out 1. Oscar Severino allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 6, and struck out 4 in 3.1 innings, and Christopher Javier walked 2 over 2 scoreless.

DSL Rangers1 10, DSL Astros Orange 3

W- Darel Torres (1-0)
L- Jose Alberto Rivera (1-2)

Orange home runs: None.

Team Orange scored 3 in the 1st, but the Rangers 1 ended up outscoring them 10-0 the rest of the way.

Jose Carrillo went 2-4 and opened the scoring with an RBI single. Jeury Castillo drew a bases-loaded walk and Carrillo came home on a wild pitch. Freudis Nova went 3-4.

Jose Alberto Rivera allowed 6 runs (5 earned) on 4 hits (grand slam), walked 4, and struck out 2 in 3 innings. Jairo Solis pitched 4.2 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Ronny Garcia got the last out of the 8th.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Thursday, June 1, 2017

The upper minors clubs came out on top, but the A teams had tough evenings.

Fresno 12, Tacoma 9

W- Brian Holmes (1-2)
L- Rob Whalen (0-3)
S- Dayan Diaz (1)

Fresno home runs: Juan Centeno (1, 3-run in 5th), D.J. Fisher (14, 2-run in 6th)

The Rainiers scored 6 in the 3rd to take a 7-1 lead, but Fresno turned the tables by closing this game on an 11-2 run that included a 6-run inning of their own.

Both sides scored a run in the opening frame; the Grizzlies' run came on a Teoscar Hernandez RBI single. Tacoma's outburst forced the Grizz to chip away for a bit; they got a run back on Tony Kemp's RBI groundout in the 3rd and 2 more in the 4th when Juan Centeno hit an RBI single and A.J. Reed scored on a wild pitch. Things got fun in the 5th inning.

Alejandro Garcia kicked off the proceedings with a double and scored on a single from Preston Tucker to cut the deficit to one run. D.J. Fisher went down on strikes for the second out, but Teoscar kept the line moving with a single, and Colin Moran got plunked to load the bases. Reed came through with a 2-run single and Centeno delivered the haymaker with a 3-run blast. Tacoma got two runs back in the 6th, but Fisher got them back when he launched a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th.

Centeno (3-R HR, 4 RBI) and Garcia (2B, 3 R) both finished 3-4 on the evening, while Reed (2B, 2 RBI, 2 R), Fisher (2B, 2-R HR, 2 R), and Teoscar (RBI, R) all had 2 hits apiece. Centeno extended his hitting streak with Fresno to 19 games.

Francis Martes and Brian Holmes both threw 2.2 innings. Martes got the start and allowed 7 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits (solo homer), walked 4, and struck out 2. Holmes allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Brendan McCurry followed with 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 3, and Dayan Diaz retired all 4 Tacoma hitters he faced to get the save.

Casey Coleman takes on Chase de Jong in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 6, Springfield 4

W- Cy Sneed (4-4)
L- Matt Pearce (5-3)
S- Andrew Thome (3, 4 season)

CC home runs: Ramon Laureano (3, 2-run in 5th)

The Hooks withstood a 4-run 6th inning to avoid the sweep.

Cy Sneed went 5.1 innings and the 4 runs he allowed all came on a couple of homers in the 6th. Oscar Mercado took him deep to lead off the inning and Anthony Garcia launched a 3-run shot off of him with one out. Only Mercado's homer was an earned run, however. Sneed allowed 3 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. Ryan Thompson recorded a strikeout over 1.2 scoreless; he faced one more batter thanks to an error. Andrew Thome got the two-inning save, allowing a hit and striking out 1.

Ramon Laureano opened up the scoring with his 2-run blast in the 5th inning. Corpus looked like they were going to go down in order in the 6th, but a couple of singles from Jack Mayfield and Laureano kept the inning alive. Bryan Muñiz walked to load the bases for Tony Nuñez, who came through with a 2-run single. One batter later, Drew Ferguson added an RBI infield single. J.D. Davis brought in a crucial insurance run with a sac fly in the 9th inning.

Mayfield and Laureano both finished 3-4 with 2 runs scored. Ferguson (2B, RBI, R), Nuñez (2 RBI), and Jamie Ritchie all finished with 2 hits apiece.

Corpus is spending this weekend in beautiful Tulsa, Oklahoma. Brock Dykxhoorn will start game 1 and he'll face Josh Sborz at 7:05.

Carolina 6, Buies Creek 3

W- Marcos Diplan (3-2)
L- Jorge Alcala (1-2, 3-2 season)
S- Nate Griep (11)

BC home runs: None.

The Mudcats got to Jorge Alcala in the 6th inning to take control.

Alcala had a decent outing up until the 6th, then the walks proved to be his doom. In 5.2 innings, he allowed 4 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him), 2 hits (solo homer), walked 5, and struck out 2. Ralph Garza Jr. couldn't get Alcala out of the bases-loaded predicament as Cooper Hummel greeted him with a 2-run single right after he came on. In 2.1 innings, Garza allowed 2 runs (1 earned) of his own on 3 hits and struck out 2. Nick Hernandez walked 1 and struck out the side in the 9th.

Stephen Wrenn scored the first run of the evening when Jake Rogers stole 2nd on a wild pitch; he reached by beating out a double play attempt. Rodrigo Ayarza hit a 2-run double in the 6th inning.

Buies Creek and Carolina will continue their series tonight at 7:00 Eastern as Yoanys Quiala goes up against Freddy Peralta.

Cedar Rapids 11, Quad Cities 1

W- Sean Poppen (4-1)
L- Dustin Hunt (0-4)

QC home runs: None.

The Kernels took the series by busting this game wide open with 5 runs in the 4th inning.

Ray Henderson's RBI single in the 7th was Quad Cities' only scoring play in this one. Yordan Alvarez extended his hitting streak to 7 games with a double to lead off the 4th.

Dustin Hunt went 3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits (solo HR), walked 2, and struck out 3. Erasmo Pinales came out for the 4th inning but could only get one out, allowing 5 runs (4 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 5 hits and walking 2. Carson LaRue tagged in for 3.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 4. Salvador Montaño worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 8th, striking out 1.

Gabriel Valdez will get the start in the first of a 3-game series with Kane County. He'll take on Curtis Taylor at 6:35.
