Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Monday, August 5, 2019

I'm sorry for the lack of updates recently... I just needed a little time off for personal reasons. Also, the constant churning out of recaps started to wear me down a bit. Good news though... I'm hopping back in the saddle today.

Round Rock 6, Sacramento 3

W- Framber Valdez (3-2)
L- Casey Meisner (2-1)
S- Ronel Blanco (5)

RR home runs: Nick Tanielu (13, solo in 6th)

Both teams scored in three separate innings but the E-Train put up a couple of crooked numbers to swing this game in their favor.

Framber Valdez went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out eight. Cy Sneed, Dean Deetz, and Ronel Blanco all pitched an inning to finish things off. Sneed allowed a solo homer and struck out two in the 7th, Deetz allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless 8th, and Blanco struck out one in a 1-2-3 9th to earn the save.

Round Rock turned a bases-loaded situation in the 2nd into three runs as Jamie Ritchie put them on the board with a sac fly, Alex De Goti hit an RBI single, and Abraham Toro got plunked with the bases loaded. Nick Tanielu smacked a solo homer in the 6th and Round Rock got two more in the 7th on a Jack Mayfield RBI single and a Kyle Tucker sac fly. Ritchie was the only person to go hitless but he still had his sac fly.

Round Rock will spend Tuesday traveling to El Paso, where they'll kick off a three-game series on Wednesday.

Corpus Christi 2, Frisco 0

W- Bryan Abreu (7-2)
L- Jason Bahr (1-3)
S- Cristian Javier (4)

CC home runs: Jonathan Arauz (9, solo in 2nd)

Jonathan Arauz had a big night at the plate while Bryan Abreu and Cristian Javier shut the Roughriders down on the mound.

Arauz opened the scoring when he launched a solo homer in the 2nd inning. He finished 3-4 and drove in Corpus Christi's other run with an RBI single in the 7th. With his home run, Arauz has set a new career-high with nine home runs on the year. Bryan de la Cruz and Jacob Meyers had two hits apiece.

Abreu allowed a hit, walked four, and struck out five over five shutout innings and Javier completed the shutout by allowing two hits, walking one, and striking out eight over the final four innings.

Yohan Ramirez goes up against Ronald Herrera in game two of this series. First pitch is at 7:05.

Fayetteville was off

The Woodpeckers will kick off a three-game set with Wilmington at 7:00 Eastern.

Kane County 3, Quad Cities 0

W- Luis Frias (1-0)
L- Brett Daniels (6-6)
S- Chester Pimentel (8)

QC home runs: None.

Wilyer Abreu had two the Banditos' three hits in this one.

Brett Daniels went five innings and allowed three runs on four hits (two-run homer), walked two, and struck out three. Hunter Martin allowed a hit and struck out three over three scoreless innings.

José Bravo will get the start as the Banditos look to avoid a sweep. First pitch is at noon.

Tri-City 3, Lowell 1

W- Cole McDonald (1-0)
L- Jenrry Mejía (0-1)

TC home runs: Joe Perez (3, walk-off 2-run in 9th)

The ValleyCats started off a new series in victorious fashion as they scored three runs in the final two innings to walk off with the win.

Juanrael Paulino, who was featured in the "Watch This Space" section of this week's Farm Report, tied the game by ripping an RBI double in the 8th and Joe Perez walked it off by smacking a two-run homer in the 9th. Perez also stole a base, his third on the year.

Kyle Serrano worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 1st inning. Edgardo Sandoval took over for five scoreless and he allowed five hits, walked two, and struck out five. Cole McDonald got the last three innings and he allowed a run on four hits, walked one, and struck out five.

Game two of this series is at 7:00 Eastern as Valente Bellozo will take on Bryan Lucas.

GCL Astros 4, GCL Marlins 2

W- Franny Cobos (2-0)
L- Josh Wolf (0-1)
S- Diosmerky Taveras (1)

GCL home runs: None.

This game was called in the top of the 9th due to rain. The Palm Beach 'Stros got four in the 1st and those runs held up in the end.

Tyler Krabbe came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the 1st inning and he cleared them with a double. He wound up scoring on a wild pitch. José Álvarez and Franklin Pinto both finished 2-4 on the afternoon.

Fredy Medina struck out one in a 1-2-3 1st inning. Franny Cobos was the first man out of the GCLStros bullpen and he allowed an unearned run on three hits, walked one, and struck out two in four innings of work. Brayan de Paula walked two and struck out three in two innings and Diosmerky Taveras allowed an unearned run on a single and struck out one in the 9th.

DSL Marlins 2, DSL Astros 0

W- Guillermo Ramirez (2-2)
L- Jaime Melendez (1-3)
S- Luis Gonzalez (2)

DSL home runs: None.

The Dominican 'Stros held the Marlins to two hits but they were also kept off the scoreboard.

Ricardo Toro had a couple of singles while Miguel Palma singled and stole a base, his seventh of the season.

Jherson Pereira struck out six over five near-perfect innings; he faced one batter over the minimum due to an error. Jaime Melendez allowed two runs on two hits, walked two, and struck out two over the final three innings.

Round Rock was off

Framber Valdez gets the start for Round Rock as they start a three-game series with Omaha at 7:05.

Springfield 6, Corpus Christi 2

W- Johan Oviedo (4-4)
L- Chad Donato (4-10)

CC home runs: Chuckie Robinson (6, solo in 4th)

The Cardinals took the series on the strength of a three-run 8th inning to seal this game.

Chad Donato went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits, walked one, and struck out three. Enoli Paredes was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and he allowed three runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out four in 3.1 innings. Nick Hernandez allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out one in a scoreless 9th.

Seth Beer grounded into a force out that scored Ronnie Dawson in the 3rd and Chuckie Robinson led off the 4th with a homer. Dawson stole a couple of bases, giving him 12 on the year.

The Hooks have Tuesday off and they'll start a roadtrip beginning with three in Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday.

Fayetteville 7, Potomac 5

W- Devin Conn (2-1)
L- Tim Cate (2-3)
S- César Rosado (4)

Fayetteville home runs: Jeremy Peña (6, solo in 1st)

The Woodpeckers earned the split as they busted out for five in the top of the 3rd and withstood a long rain delay and a four-run bottom of the 3rd from the P-Nats.

Jeremy Peña banged a ball off the scoreboard in the 1st inning for his first Carolina League home run. He added an RBI single to his ledger in Fayetteville's big 3rd inning and came around to score alongside Corey Julks on a double from Jacob Meyers. Meyers, who advanced to third on the throw from the outfield, scored on a single from Jake Adams. Adams rumbled home when Enmanuel Valdez ripped a double. Peña drove in the final run of the evening on a sac fly in the 6th. He, Meyers, Valdez, and Ross Adolph all finished with two hits on the night.

Austin Hansen allowed two hits and struck out three over two scoreless innings... and then the rain hit. Leovanny Rodríguez came out after play resumed and he allowed four runs on three hits, walked four, and struck out two in 1.1 innings of work. Devin Conn threw three innings and got the win in his Fayetteville debut by allowing a run on three hits, walking two, and striking out one. César Rosado walked two and struck out four over the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

The Woodpeckers will welcome Lynchburg to SEGRA Stadium for three starting tonight at 7:00 Eastern. Jojanse Torres will get the start in game one.

Quad Cities 1, Bowling Green 0

W- Jonathan Bermúdez (4-2)
L- Caleb Sampen (7-4)
S- Garrett Gayle (2)

QC home runs: None.

There was only one run in this game and it belonged to the Banditos.

Jonathan Bermúdez allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out five over six shutout frames. Hunter Martin allowed a hit and struck out three in two innings and Garrett Gayle struck out one in a 1-2-3 9th to complete the shutout.

Austin Dennis hit a sac fly in the 4th that held up in the end. Grae Kessinger and Oscar Campos both finished 2-3.

After a day off, Quad Cities will start a three-game set with Peoria tomorrow.

Tri-City 4, Vermont 2

W- Derek West (1-1)
L- Hogan Harris (1-3)
S- Shea Barry (1)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats held the Lake Monsters to three hits as they took the series.

Peyton Battenfield and Derek West started things off with three innings apiece. Battenfield allowed a run on two hits and fanned four while West walked two and struck out three. Hunter Brown walked three and struck out three over two scoreless, and Shea Barry allowed an unearned run on an error, a hit, walked one, and struck out two in the 9th.

C.J. Stubbs opened the scoring with a two-run single in the 1st inning. Juan Paulino ripped an RBI double in the 4th and Luis Santana stole home in the 8th as part of a double steal with Korey Lee, who took second.

The ValleyCats are in Brooklyn for three starting at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 6, GCL Cardinals 4

W- Jairo Lopez (2-1)
L- Inohan Paniagua (1-3)

GCL home runs: None.

Jairo Lopez turned in the best outing of his young career and the Palm Beach 'Stros staved off a late rally from the Cardinals to earn the win.

Lopez, in his second pro season out of Venezuela, struck out seven over five perfect innings. Franny Cobos went three innings and allowed a run on two hits and struck out one. Kevin Dickey got the 9th and it was a bit rocky, but he managed to keep himself together and finished the game. Dickey allowed three runs on two hits, walked two, and struck out one.

DSL Royals1 11, DSL Astros 1 (7 innings)

W- Kelvin De Los Santos (4-1)
L- Ricardo León (1-2)

DSL home runs: None.

This game was called early due to rain and it was probably for the best.

Round Rock 11, Las Vegas 5

W- Akeem Bostick (4-2)
L- Parker Dunshee (1-3)
S- Ryan Hartman (1)

RR home runs: Nick Tanielu 2 (6; solo in 7th, solo in 9th)

After getting whipped on Tuesday, the E-Train returned the favor and got even in this Sin City series.

Akeem Bostick turned in a bare minimum quality start (6 IP, 3 ER), allowing six hits (three solo homers), walking two, and striking out three. Ryan Hartman got the last three innings and he allowed two runs on three hits, walked one, and struck out six.

Yordan Alvarez opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning. Josh Rojas and Drew Ferguson added a sac fly and an RBI double in the 2nd inning, respectively, and Round Rock got three more runs in the 3rd as A.J. Reed ripped an RBI double and came around to score on a base hit from Aníbal Sierra. Nick Tanielu scored another run on an error after Rojas stole second.

Rojas ripped an RBI double in the 5th. Taylor Jones hit an RBI single in the 6th and Reed added a sac fly to his ledger later in the inning. Tanielu capped off Round Rock's scoring with a solo blast in the 7th and another solo shot in the 9th. He ended up scoring four times in this game. Jones led the way in the hit department by going 3-4. Ferguson, Sierra, and Tanielu all had two hits on the night.

The series concludes at 7:05 Pacific. Whoever gets the start for Round Rock will take on former Astro Jake Buchanan.

Midland 9, Corpus Christi 6 (10 innings)

W- Jesús Zambrano (1-0)
L- Jonathan Bermúdez (0-2)
S- Kyle Finnegan (8)

CC home runs: Carlos Canelón (1, 2-run in 2nd)

The RockHounds exploded for five runs in the first extra frame to take control of this one.

Corpus entered the bottom of the 4th down 4-0 but they fought back to tie the game. Seth Beer put them on the board with an RBI single and Granden Goetzman followed with a sac fly. Two batters later, Carlos Canelón smacked a two-run homer, which turned out to be the Hooks' only extra-base hit of the game. Canelón drove in another run when he hit into a force out in the 10th and scored on Osvaldo Duarte's single. Chas McCormick went 2-5 with a run scored and a couple of stolen bases (9).

Carson LaRue went 5.2 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, walked one, and struck out six. Hunter Martin was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and he threw 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out one. Jonathan Bermúdez pitched 1.2 innings and allowed two runs (one earned; both runs were inherited runners that were charged to him), a hit, walked one, and struck out five. Tommy DeJuneas would probably like a mulligan on his Texas League debut.

The Hooks will begin a four-game series with Amarillo at 6:15.

Fayetteville was off

The Woodpeckers will begin a four-game series in Wilmington, Delaware, tonight at 6:35 Eastern.

Peoria 6, Quad Cities 2

W- Michael Brettell (2-2)
L- José Alberto Rivera (1-3)

QC home runs: None.

A quick start from the Chiefs doomed the Banditos on Wednesday.

José Alberto Rivera went 3.2 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits (solo homer), walked one, and struck out six. Matt Ruppenthal tagged in for 3.1 innings, allowing a run on seven hits, walking one, and striking out two. Riley Cabral allowed a hit, walked two, and struck out two over the final two innings.

Ross Adolph went 2-3 with a sac fly in the 6th inning and scored on Orlando Marquez's groundout in the 9th.

Cody Deason will start the series finale and he'll face Kyle Leahy at 6:35.

DSL Rays1 13, DSL Astros 5

W- Orlando Barrios (1-0)
L- Misael Tamarez (0-1)

DSL home runs: Jesús Liranzo (1, 2-run in 4th)

The Academy was done in by a seven-run 5th inning from the Rays.

Jesús Liranzo launched a two-run homer, the first of his career, in the 4th inning. Cristian Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch in the 5th and Ricardo Balogh came on as a pinch-hitter in the 8th and hit a two-run single. Gonzalez, Liranzo, and Ayendy Ortiz all finished 2-4 on the day.

Misael Tamarez allowed four runs on four hits, walked two, and struck out two in three innings of work. Johnagel Ramirez was the first man out of the DSL bullpen and he allowed six runs (four earned) on four hits, walked two, and struck out one in 1.1 innings. José Betances was next and he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits, walked two, and struck out two in 1.2 innings. Edinson Batista pitched the final three innings and allowed a run on three hits, walked one, and struck out three.

The DSL Astros are currently taking on the A's.

Memphis 5, Round Rock 3 in 10 innings

W- Jesus Cruz (1-0)
L- Cy Sneed (0-2)

RR home runs: Yordan Alvarez (9, solo in 4th), Garrett Stubbs (2, solo in 8th)

The Express tied the game with a couple of runs in the 8th inning... only to see the Redbirds walk off with the win in the first extra frame.

Yordan Alvarez put Round Rock on the board with a solo shot in the 4th inning. Garrett Stubbs led off the 8th with a homer and then Alvarez tied the game with an RBI double. Alvarez and Myles straw both finished with two hits on the afternoon.

Forrest Whitley and Cy Sneed both pitched 4.2 innings. Whitley allowed a run on two hits, walked two, and struck out five, while Sneed allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits, including the walk-off two-run homer in the 10th, and struck out five.

Brady Rodgers will take on Genesis Cabrera in the finale of this series. First pitch is at 11:05 AM.

Corpus Christi was off

The Hooks will welcome the Northwest Arkansas Naturals to the Coastal Bend for a three-game series starting tonight at 6:15.

Carolina 6, Fayetteville 5

W- Matt Hardy (4-0)
L- Joey Gonzalez (0-1)
S- Rodrigo Benoit (5)

Fayetteville home runs: Michael Papierski (1, solo in 5th), Colton Shaver (3, solo in 9th)

The Woodpeckers scored in more innings, but the problem was that they scored one run in each of those innings. The Mudcats, on the other hand, were able to put up a couple of crooked numbers. And so... the first series in the history of SEGRA Stadium ended in a split.

Scott Manea put the Woodpeckers on the board with an RBI single in the 2nd inning. Jake Meyers drove in a run with a single in the 3rd, and then Michael Papierski smacked a solo homer in the 5th. Papierski scored on Corey Julks' base hit in the 7th and Colton Shaver whacked a homer in the 9th to cut the deficit to one run. Julks struck out but reached first base safely to extend the game. Unfortunately, Meyers grounded into a double play to end the afternoon. Papierski and Shaver scored two runs apiece; no one in the lineup had more than one hit.

Parker Mushinski went four innings and the two runs he allowed came on a homer hit by Eddie Silva in the 2nd inning; only one of the runs was earned. Mushinski allowed two other hits and struck out nine. Joey Gonzalez and Hunter Martin pitched 2.1 innings apiece; Gonzalez was first and he allowed four runs on five hits (solo and three-run homers) and struck out two. Martin turned in a scoreless outing, walking two and striking out four. Leovanny Rodriguez got the final out of the 9th.

After having Monday off, the Woodpeckers will start a three-game series with Frederick on Tuesday.

Quad Cities was off

The River Bandits will return to Peoria as the road team this time as they start a three-game series with the Chiefs at 6:35.

Round Rock 5, New Orleans 4

W- Rogelio Armenteros (1-0)
L- Alex Meyer (0-1)
S- Brendan McCurry (1)

RR home runs: Kyle Tucker (1, 2-run in 4th), Myles Straw (1, 2-run in 5th), Jack Mayfield (2, solo in 5th)

The Express smacked three home runs and then hung on to take their first series of the 2019 season.

Rogelio Armenteros allowed a run on a solo homer, two other hits, and struck out five in 5.1 innings. Ralph Garza Jr. was the first man out of the Round Rock bullpen and he allowed three runs on five hits (two solo homers), walked one, and struck out two in 2.2 innings. Brendan McCurry got the final four outs of the game, striking out one.

Kyle Tucker opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the 4th. One inning later, Myles Straw launched a two-run homer of his own and Jack Mayfield clubbed a solo homer. Straw and Mayfield both finished with two hits on the afternoon.

Round Rock will kick off a three-game series against Nashville at 7:05. The Sounds are now a Rangers affiliate so this will be the first iteration of the Lone Star Series in the PCL. Forrest Whitley will make his first start of 2019 and he'll go up against Taylor Hearn.

Frisco 11, Corpus Christi 2

W- Edgar Arredondo (1-0)
L- J.B. Bukauskas (0-1)

CC home runs: Chuckie Robinson (1, 2-run in 7th)

Round 1 of the Lone Star Series in the Texas League went to Frisco as the Hooks were doomed by four errors in this game.

Chuckie Robinson's two-run homer in the 7th represented the only Corpus scoring play.

J.B. Bukauskas struggled and I think it's for the best if I left it at that. Tanner Duncan was the first man out of the Hooks bullpen and he allowed an unearned run, four hits, and walked one in 1.1 innings. Brandon Bielak pitched the last four innings and allowed a run on a homer, one other hit, walked one, and struck out one.

José Hernandez-Urquidy takes on Pedro Payano in game two of this series. First pitch is at 7:05.

Fayetteville 8, Frederick 5 in 12 innings

W- Hunter Martin (1-0)
L- Travis Seabrooke (0-1)

Fayetteville home runs: Colton Shaver (1, solo in 5th)

The Woodpeckers nearly squandered a bases-loaded, no out situation in the top of the 12th but they pulled themselves together to seize control of the game, scoring four runs to break a 4-4 tie.

Colton Shaver put Fayetteville on the board by smacking a home run to start the 5th inning. Seth Beer tied the game at 2 in the 6th inning with an RBI single. Jake Meyers ripped an RBI double in the 8th and then grounded into a force out in the 10th that allowed Chandler Taylor to score. Unfortunately, the Keys scored in their half of the 10th, so we continued on...

Neither team scored in the 11th inning. Shaver started the top of the 12th in scoring position, and then Michael Papierski and Chandler Taylor both drew walks to load the bases. Jonathan Arauz hit into a force out that erased Shaver at home and Miguelangel Sierra struck out to jeopardize the potential rally. Meyers came up next and he fought back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk to bring Papierski in with the go-ahead run. Corey Julks followed with a two-run single and Beer capped off the rally with an RBI single.

Beer was the only player in the Fayetteville lineup to finish with more than one hit. Taylor struck out in both of his official at-bats, but he also drew three walks and scored twice. Meyers drove in two, walked twice, and scored twice. Julks' two-run single in his final plate appearance of the evening certainly lessened the sting of having to wear the golden sombrero.

Peter Solomon went 4.2 innings in his season debut and he allowed two runs on six hits (solo homer), walked one, and struck out 11. Tommy DeJuneas was next and he allowed a run on a wild pitch, a hit, walked two, and struck out four in 2.1 innings of work. Leovanny Rodriguez followed with two scoreless, allowing a hit, walking two, and striking out three.

Hunter Martin got the win in his first appearance in over a year and a half; his last appearance was August 30, 2017, with Tri-City before he succumbed to what I presume was Tommy John surgery, which resulted in him missing the 2018 season. In three innings, Martin allowed two unearned runs (he worked all three extra innings) on a single in the 10th and a sac fly in the 12th, walked one, and struck out one.

Bryan Abreu will make his 2019 debut tonight at 7:00 Eastern and he'll go up against Brennan Hanifee.

Quad Cities 6, Clinton 5 in 10 innings

W- Willy Collado (1-0)
L- C.J. Carter (0-1)

QC home runs: Enmanuel Valdez (1, 2-run in 7th)

The Banditos opened a new series by getting back in the win column.

Trey Dawson drew a one-out walk in the 3rd, stole his way to third base, and scored Quad Cities' first run on an error that allowed Jeremy Peña to reach. Peña was awarded second base and scored when Enmanuel Valdez ripped a double. Jonathan Lacroix hit an RBI single in the 6th that tied the game at 3 and one inning later, Valdez whacked a two-run homer to put the River Bandits in front. Lacroix started the 10th in scoring position and he wound up scoring the deciding run when Peña drew a bases-loaded walk.

Valdez had his best performance of the young season with his RBI double and two-run homer. He might be the youngest player on the Quad Cities roster but he's hit third in every game that he's played this season and has responded well to this assignment. The real mission for him is trying to maintain a level of consistently good play throughout his first shot at full-season baseball. César Salazar, Scott Schreiber, and Andy Piñeda also finished with two hits on the evening.

Luis Garcia went four innings and allowed three runs on four hits (2-run homer), walked three, and struck out seven. Mark Moclair threw 3.1 innings and allowed two runs, a hit, walked three, and struck out seven. Both of the runs that were charged to him were inherited runners that scored. Willy Collado pitched 2.2 innings and while he didn't allow any runs of his own, he allowed a two-run double in the 8th that tied the game and the runs got charged to Moclair's account. Collado struck out three during his stint on the mound.

Austin Hansen takes on Chris Vallimont in game two of this series. First pitch is at 6:30.

Fresno home runs: Preston Tucker (21, solo in 4th)

Despite getting 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st before recording an out, the Grizzlies got battered on Monday by 4 El Paso home runs and were outscored 14-4 the rest of the way.

A.J. Reed opened the scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 1st. Jack Mayfield and Jon Kemmer followed by walking in two more runs, which prompted a pitching change. Garrett Stubbs grounded into a force out that scored Reed, and Mayfield ended up scoring on an error. Reed ripped an RBI double in the 2nd inning, Stubbs hit an RBI single in the 3rd, and Tucker smacked a solo homer in the 4th. Mayfield scored on a Drew Ferguson groundout in the 7th inning. Mayfield (2B, RBI, 2 R) and Kemmer (2B, RBI, R) both finished 2-4.

It was not a banner night for the Fresno pitching staff, but Ashur Tolliver did retire the side in order in the 9th, getting two flyouts and a groundout.

It's Tuesday, so you know what that means... Taco Tuesday! Kent Emanuel takes on former Astro Jordan Lyles in game 2. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi was off

The Hooks will start a 3-game series against Tulsa at 7:05. Brock Dykxhoorn will take on Josh Sborz in game 1.

Buies Creek was off

Quad Cities 8, Beloit 5

W- Carson LaRue (12-4)
L- Zack Erwin (5-3)

QC home runs: Abraham Toro-Hernandez (4, 10 season; solo in 2nd), Josh Rojas (9, solo in 5th), Chuckie Robinson (12, 2-run in 6th)

After the Snappers scored twice in the opening half-inning, the Banditos responded with 8 unanswered runs to seize control of this game. Beloit made things a little interesting late, but the Banditos were able to secure their 7th consecutive win.

Carson LaRue started things off and shook off those early runs to throw 5.1 innings, allowing 8 hits, walking 1, and striking out 7. Lucas Williams was the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen and allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 4 in 1.2 innings of work. Dustin Hunt allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 in the 8th, and Salvador Montaño pitched the 9th, allowing a run on a wild pitch, a double, walking 1, and striking out 2.

Abraham Toro-Hernandez led off the bottom of the 2nd with a homer to put the Banditos on the board. Daz Cameron followed by drawing a walk. He moved to 2nd base on a Josh Rojas single and scored on a Kristian Trompiz single. Ray Henderson kept the line moving with an RBI single, and Luis Payano drew a walk to load the bases. Ronnie Dawson struck out and Chuckie Robinson popped out in foul ground, but Troy Sieber came through with a single to bring Trompiz in.

Henderson added another RBI single to his ledger in the 3rd inning. Rojas led off the 5th with a homer, and after Dawson walked to lead off the 6th and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, Robinson launched his second 2-run homer in as many nights. Rojas (solo HR, 3 R) and Henderson (2B, 2 RBI) had 3 hits apiece, while Sieber (RBI) and Trompiz (RBI, R) both finished with 2 hits.

Cristian Javier takes on Seth Martinez as Quad Cities wraps up this series. First pitch is at 6:35.

Tri-City 4, Aberdeen 3

W- Reggie Johnson (5-0)
L- Jimmy Murphy (1-2)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats took this game and the series thanks to a wild 8th inning. Aberdeen broke a 1-1 tie with a pair in the top half and Tri-City responded with 3 in the bottom half to take the lead.

No one in the lineup recorded an RBI. Corey Julks scored the ValleyCats' first run of the evening on a double play in the 2nd inning. J.J. Matijevic hit a one-out double in the bottom of the 8th and scored on an error that allowed Adrian Tovalin to reach.

Tovalin, who advanced to 2nd on the error, moved to 3rd on Colton Shaver's single and scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Shaver made way for Andy Piñeda, who stole 2nd (13), advanced to 3rd on the wild pitch that allowed Tovalin to score, and scored what turned out to be the winning run on an error that allowed Julks to reach. Shaver finished 2-4 on the evening.

Alex House and Hunter Martin started it off with 3 innings apiece. House allowed a homer to Mason McCoy to start the game, a double, and struck out 5. Martin allowed 2 hits and struck out 3. Parker Mushinski allowed 2 runs (1 earned), a bunt single, walked 3, and struck out 3 in 1.2 innings. Reggie Johnson retired all 4 Aberdeen hitters he faced and struck out 3 of them.

Tri-City will begin a 3-game series in Lowell at 6:35 Eastern.

Greeneville and Burlington was postponed

Due to rain. A doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5:00 Eastern. Leovanny Rodriguez will face Nathan Webb in game 1. The second game will start 30 minutes following the conclusion of game 1; the Appy Astros' starter for that game is TBA.

Game 1: DSL Athletics 6, DSL Astros Blue 2

W- Alexander Calderon (3-1)
L- Jean Reyes (0-1)

Blue home runs: None.

Team Blue got their two runs in game 1 in the 5th inning: Leonardo Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Kendy Moya followed by walking in another run. Gonzalez finished 2-2.

Jean Reyes allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and struck out 4 in 4 innings. Bryan Solano was the first man out of the bullpen in game 1 and went 2 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, walking 2, and striking out 4. Angel Matos worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 7th.

Game 2: DSL Athletics 1, DSL Astros Blue 0

W- Livan Sanchez (1-1)
L- Angel Ortega (2-2)
S- Ruber Aquino (8)

Blue home runs: None.

The only hit that the Blue team could muster up in game 2 was a single from Yorbin Ceuta. Yeuris Ramirez walked twice, while Ronaldo Urdaneta stole 2 bases (21).

Angel Ortega went 4 innings and allowed the only run on 3 hits and struck out 1. Jervic Chavez walked 1 and struck out 2 over 2 scoreless.

Game 1: DSL Rangers1 2, DSL Astros Orange 1

W- Jesús Linares (5-1)
L- Fredis Guerrero (3-1)

Orange home runs: None.

The Orange team outhit the Rangers 12-6, but lost in the column that matters most.

Luis Barajas had a pinch-hit RBI single in the 7th. Fildex Perfecto scored, but Michael Garcia was thrown out at the plate to end the game as he attempted to score the tying run. Ramiro Rodriguez, Marco Van Der Wijst, and Deury Carrasco all finished 2-3.

Fredis Guerrero went 5 innings and allowed a run on 6 hits and fanned 4. Luis De Paula walked a batter in the 6th who eventually scored on... a throw from the outfield that went to the wrong target, I guess. De Paula also had a strikeout in the inning.

Game 2: DSL Rangers1 13, DSL Astros Orange 0

W- Sergio Suarez (3-1)
L- Elian Rodriguez (0-3)

Orange home runs: None.

Uhhh... the second game didn't go as well for Team Orange. I think I'll just leave it at that.

Fresno sweep!

Fresno 5, Tacoma 4

W- Brendan McCurry (2-0)
L- Jean Machi (2-4)
S- Jordan Jankowski (7)

Fresno home runs: Tony Kemp (5, 2-run in 3rd), Tyler White (16, 3-run in 9th)

Tyler White's 3-run home run put the Grizzlies in the lead, helped them steal one from right under the Rainiers, and capped off a sweep to begin the 2nd half of their season.

Prior to White's blast, Tony Kemp launched a 2-run homer in the 3rd to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. Kemp finished 3-4 on the day. Max Stassi went 2-3 with a double and scored on White's homer.

The one run that Mike Hauschild allowed in his 4 innings came on a solo homer hit by D.J. Peterson in the 2nd inning. Hauschild allowed 3 other hits, walked 3, and struck out 2. Tyson Perez allowed a run on 2 hits and walked 1 in the 5th. Andrew Thome got one out in the 6th and allowed 2 runs, both of which were inherited runners that were charged to him, and walked 1. Ashur Tolliver got the last two outs of the 6th; he walked 1 and struck out 1.

Jacob Dorris, Brendan McCurry, and Jordan Jankowski all pitched a scoreless inning. Dorris walked 1 and struck out 1 in the 7th, while McCurry and Jankowski struck out 2 as they retired the side in order in the 8th and the 9th, respectively.

Rogelio Armenteros will start the first of a 4-game set in Las Vegas at 7:05 Pacific. He'll be opposed by Ricky Knapp.

Corpus Christi 2, Frisco 1 in 10 innings

W- Andrew Walter (1-0)
L- Clayton Cook (2-2)

CC home runs: None.

Collin McHugh looked sharp in what could possibly be his final rehab start and the Hooks walked it off on Arlington's AA affiliate.

McHugh went 6 innings and allowed an unearned run on an error, 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. He needed 69 pitches (48 strikes) to get through those 6 innings. Riley Ferrell and Andrew Walter followed with 2 scoreless innings apiece out of the Corpus bullpen. Ferrell allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 3, while Walter allowed a hit and fanned 1.

J.D. Davis went 3-4 with a double and opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 3rd inning. This was the only Corpus scoring play until Tony Nuñez won the game by scoring on a wild pitch in the 10th. Nuñez walked to lead off the first extra frame. Jamie Ritchie went 2-4.

Some guy named Dallas Keuchel will make his first rehab appearance tonight. I understand that he's pretty good at throwing a baseball. He'll take on Ariel Jurado at 7:05.

Buies Creek 1, Myrtle Beach 1 through 4 innings

This game was suspended due to rain. Play will resume at 5:00 Eastern.

Both teams scored a run in the 3rd; Buies Creek's came on a Taylor Jones RBI single.

Cionel Perez allowed a run on 6 hits and struck out 2 in his Carolina League debut.

Ryan Hartman will take on Mike Rucker in the regularly scheduled game, which will be a 7-inning affair.

West Michigan 7, Quad Cities 0

W- Tom de Blok (2-0)
L- Carlos Sanabria (4-3)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos' offense was handcuffed on Sunday afternoon. All they could muster up were singles from Carmen Benedetti, Troy Sieber, Daz Cameron, and Gabriel Bracamonte. Everyone in the lineup struck out at least once.

Carlos Sanabria went 6.1 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 4. Lucas Williams pitched the last 1.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and striking out 4.

Quad Cities and West Michigan will conclude their series at 7:00 Eastern as Yohan Ramirez takes on Anthony Castro.

Tri-City 13, Batavia 8

W- Hunter Martin (1-0)
L- Edward Cabrera (0-3)

TC home runs: J.J. Matijevic (2, 3-run in 3rd)

The ValleyCats stormed out to a 12-2 lead to take the series. Batavia cut into that lead quite a bit towards the end, but it was absorbed by that big early cushion.

TC turned a bases-loaded, no out situation to begin the 2nd inning into 6 runs. Mike Papierski led it off with a single, and then Kyle Davis and Reid Russell joined him after getting plunked and singling, respectively. Miguelangel Sierra opened the scoring with a sac fly. Davis scored on a would-be double play ball that was botched, and Russell scored on a wild pitch. Piñeda came home on a J.J. Matijevic groundout, then Corey Julks scored on a passed ball. Kristian Trompiz doubled, which prompted a pitching change. After Jake Adams drew a walk, Papierski hit an RBI single in his second plate appearance of the inning.

Sierra was plunked to start the 3rd. He then advanced to 3rd on a Piñeda single and scored on an errant pickoff throw. Julks walked, then proceeded to steal 2nd (5). Matijevic landed a haymaker in the form of a 3-run homer. In the 4th, Sierra scored on yet another wild pitch and Piñeda scored on a double play. Matijevic scored the final Tri-City run on a Carlos Canelon single in the 6th.

Trompiz went 4-6 on the day. Matijevic finished 3-6, while Sierra (2B, RBI, 2 R), Papierski (RBI, R), and Canelon (RBI) all finished with 2 hits.

Parker Mushinski went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 6. Hunter Martin got his first professional win by throwing 3.2 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 4. Diogenes Almengo allowed 5 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and walked 1 in the final 1.1 innings.

The ValleyCats are home, and they'll start a 3-game set with Connecticut at 7:00 Eastern.

Greeneville 8, Elizabethton 4

W- Gerardo Bojorquez (2-0)
L- Edwar Colina (2-1)
S- Jheyson Caraballo (1)

Greeneville home runs: Gilberto Celestino (2, 2-run in 5th), Roman Garcia (2, grand slam in 6th)

The Appy Astros switched places in the standings with the Twins behind a strong outing from Gerardo Bojorquez and a show of power in the middle innings.

The one hit Bojorquez allowed in his 6 innings was a solo homer to Brent Rooker. Bojorquez also walked 3 and struck out 8. Jheyson Caraballo allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 over the final 3 innings.

Ruben Castro put Greeneville on the board with an RBI single in the 4th. Gilberto Celestino launched a 2-run homer in the 5th, and Roman Garcia landed the knockout blow by clubbing a grand slam in the 5th. Frankeny Fernandez capped off the evening with an RBI single in the 8th. Garcia (2B, grand slam), Castro (RBI), and Cody Bohanek (2B, R) all finished with 2 hits in the game.

Hansel Paulino faces Huascar Ynoa in the series finale. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Rough day in the field for the Palm Beach Stros as they committed 4 errors.

Hector Martinez put the GCLstros on the board with a solo homer in the 7th and Jose Benjamin scored on an error in the 9th. Carlos Machado ripped a triple in the 8th inning.

Maikel Sepulveda allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 4.2 innings. Juan Corniel was the first man out of the bullpen and allowed a run on a double, walked 2, and struck out 2. Javier Navas retired the side in order in the 9th.

Dominican Summer League All-Star Game

The NL topped the AL 3-2.

The AL All-Stars scored twice in the 1st but nothing more. Ronaldo Urdaneta got the start at 2B and went 0-1 with a walk, scored a run, and stole a base. Ramiro Rodriguez started at DH and struck out in both of his plate appearances. Angel Tejeda entered the game as a sub in RF in the 4th and popped out to 2B in his only at-bat in the 7th.
