Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Monday, July 3, 2017

A couple of top arms and yet another under-the-radar arm all appeared in a new league for the first time.

Fresno 4, Sacramento 1

W- Rogelio Armenteros (1-0, 3-3 season)
L- Andrew Suarez (2-2)
S- Kyle Smith (1, 3 season)

Fresno home runs: Max Stassi 2 (10; solo in 3rd, solo in 5th)

Rogelio Armenteros had an excellent AAA debut and Max Stassi launched a couple of solo shots. The Grizzlies took their 11th consecutive game and swept the RiverCats. Since switching affiliations from the Giants to the Astros, Fresno has gone 34-14 against Sacramento (per Paul Braverman).

Armenteros allowed 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 8 over 6 shutout innings. The RiverCats spoiled the shutout with a sac fly off of Kyle Smith in the 7th. Smith went 3 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 2.

Max Stassi whacked his first solo homer of the evening in the 3rd to open the scoring, then launched another one in the 5th. Tyler White and Reid Brignac hit RBI singles in the 6th and the 7th, respectively. Stassi's two hits were the solo blasts; he was the only player on either side to finish with a multi-hit game.

Tonight, the Grizzlies will take the field as the Tacos on a special Taco Tuesday on this Fourth of July. Trent Thornton starts the first of a 3-game set with Salt Lake at 6:35 Pacific.

Arkansas 4, Corpus Christi 0

W- Lindsey Caughel (5-7)
L- Cy Sneed (7-5)

CC home runs: None.

This tour of Arkansas has been rough on the Hooks.

Kyle Tucker went 2-4. Jason Martin's double was Corpus Christi's only extra-base hit.

Cy Sneed allowed 4 runs on 10 hits and struck out 4 in 4.2 innings. Andrew Walter allowed a hit and struck out 3 over 2.1 scoreless, and Jacob Dorris struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th.

Framber Valdez takes the mound as the Hooks look to avoid getting swept out of Arkansas. He'll face Justin DeFratus at 5:30.

Buies Creek 6, Potomac 0

W- Forrest Whitley (1-0, 3-3 season)
L- Hector Silvestre (7-3)
S- Justin Ferrell (2)

BC home runs: Ryne Birk (7, solo in 1st), Stephen Wrenn (2, 5 season; solo in 2nd)

The Potomac Nationals were not ready for Forrest Whitley, who along with Justin Ferrell, rendered their offense useless.

Whitley went 5 innings, walking 1 and striking out 9 in a dominant Carolina League debut. Ferrell completed the shutout by allowing 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 4 over the final 4 innings. Whitley now has 76 strikeouts in just 51.1 innings this season.

Ryne Birk got things started in the 1st when he whacked a solo homer. Stephen Wrenn began the 2nd inning with the first inside-the-park home run in Buies Creek/Fayetteville franchise history. Two batters later, Randy César ripped a double and scored on Anibal Sierra's single. César scored on an error that allowed Birk to reach in the 7th, and finally in the 8th, Alex De Goti drew a bases-loaded walk and Sierra beat a double play attempt which allowed Spencer Johnson to score. César had 1/3 of the Carolina Stros' hits, finishing 3-4 and scoring twice.

Buies Creek will spend this Fourth of July in Myrtle Beach. Brett Adcock takes on Ryan Kellogg in the first of a 3-game series at 7:05 Eastern.

Quad Cities 8, Burlington 6

W- César Rosado (1-0, 2-0 season)
L- Joe Gatto (5-7)

QC home runs: Josh Rojas (2, solo in 2nd)

The Banditos bashed 16 hits and César Rosado was a winner in his Midwest League debut.

Gabriel Valdez got the start and went 4.2 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, walking 2, and striking out 2. César Rosado threw the final 4.1 innings and allowed his first run of the season when Richard Fectau took him deep for a solo homer in the bottom of the 9th. Other than that, Rosado continued his dominant start to his season, allowing one other hit and striking out 6.

Quad Cities scored two in each of the first two innings of this one. Troy Sieber hit an RBI single in the 1st to open the scoring and an error on the play allowed Chuckie Robinson to come home with another run. Josh Rojas led off the 2nd with a homer and Carmen Benedetti ripped an RBI double later in the frame. Both teams scored 3 in the 4th; Quad Cities' 3 came on a Jonathan Arauz single, Benedetti's 2nd RBI double of the evening, and a groundout from Sieber. Robinson scored on a Wander Franco sac fly in the 6th.

Benedetti turned in the first 5-hit game of his career. Sieber finished 3-5, while Arauz and Rojas both went 2-5.

The Banditos are back home and they'll start a 3-game series with Kane County at 6:35. Yohan Ramirez will face Emilio Vargas.

Staten Island 5, Tri-City 0

W- Jorge Guzman (3-0)
L- Juan Robles (0-1, 1-1 season)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats were absolutely helpless against Jorge Guzman, who racked up double-digit strikeouts against (most of) his old teammates.

Connor MacDonald doubled and J.J. Matijevic singled. That was all she wrote for Tri-City's offense.

Juan Robles went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. The one run that Nathan Thompson allowed in his 3 innings came on a solo homer hit by Nelson Gomez in the 6th. Thompson allowed 2 other hits, walked 1, and fanned 4. Robert Corniel worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 8th, striking out 1.

The ValleyCats are back home to start a 3-game series with Brooklyn. Cristian Javier will start game 1, which begins at 6:30 Eastern.

Greeneville and Kingsport was postponed

Due to rain. This game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on August 12.

The Appy Astros will kick off a 3-game series with Johnson City at 7:00 Eastern.

From June 15: DSL Astros Blue 5, DSL Royals 1

W- Antonio Pujols (2-0)
L- Brian Abreu (0-1)

Blue home runs: None.

I guess this game wasn't made official because they went ahead and finished it up. It had been suspended due to rain back on June 15 with the Blue team leading 2-1 in the top of the 6th.

César Cortez hit a sac fly to put the Blue team on the board in the 3rd inning. Ronaldo Urdaneta walked in the go-ahead run in the top of the 7th. When play resumed, Kendy Moya tacked on a couple of more runs with a double, and Leonardo Gonzalez hit an RBI single in the 9th.

Angel Macuare went 4 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. Antonio Pujols allowed a hit and struck out 5 over 5 scoreless.

L- Adan Frias (0-1)

Blue home runs: None.

Yorbin Ceuta and Freddy Chirino both went 2-4 with 2 RBI. Leonardo Gonzalez also turned in a 2-4 day for the Blue team with a double and an RBI.

Jose Antonio Hernandez allowed one scoring play in his 4 innings, a 2-run homer to Ismaldo Rodriguez in the 5th. Hernandez allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 3. Jonger Ochoa allowed a hit and struck out 1 over 2 scoreless, and Nathanael Ventura hit a batter with the baess loaded, walked 3, and struck out 2 in the 9th.

DSL Pirates 9, DSL Astros Orange 8

W- Wilmer Contreras (4-0)
L- Diosward Gonzalez (2-2)

Orange home runs: None.

Ramiro Rodriguez went 3-5 with 3 RBI and a stolen base (3). Deury Carrasco and Jose Alvarez both scored twice. Sean Mendoza went 2-2 with an RBI and scored a run.

Perdomo allowed 3 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 2 hits, walked 5, and struck out 1, while De Paula struck out 1. Diosward Gonzalez went 4.1 innings and allowed 6 runs (2 earned, 2 inherited runners charged to him) on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. Fredy Medina walked 1 and got the last two outs of the 9th.

Happy Gulf Coast League Opening Day!

Also, the Astros' A clubs blasted their counterparts from the Brewers.

Fresno 7, Albuquerque 6 in 10 innings

W- Brian Holmes (2-2)
L- Shane Carle (1-4)

Fresno home runs: Max Stassi (8, 2-run in 5th), Colin Moran (17, solo in 8th)

The Grizzlies couldn't hold a 6-2 lead, but fortunately, they were able to rectify this by literally walking off with the win in the first extra frame.

David Martinez allowed a run on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 in 6 innings. Ashur Tolliver was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen and got 2 outs in the 7th, allowing a run on a bases-loaded walk and a double. Overall, Tolliver issued 3 walks. Aaron West got him out of his predicament without further incident. He threw 1.1 innings, walking 1 and striking out 2. Jordan Jankowski only got one out in the 9th; he had 3 inherited runners charged to him, walked 1, and allowed 2 hits. Dayan Diaz got the final two outs of the 9th, but not before the Isotopes tied the game off of him with a sac fly, a wild pitch, and a 2-run single. The game-tying 2-run single was the one hit that Diaz allowed; he also walked 1 and struck out 1. Brian Holmes struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 10th.

Albuquerque scored a run in the 5th and the 7th; each time, Fresno responded with 2 runs in the bottom half. Max Stassi put them on the board with a 2-run blast in the 5th, while Tyler White hit an RBI single and Tony Kemp scored on an error that allowed Preston Tucker to reach in the 7th. Colin Moran led off the bottom of the 8th with a homer and Kemp added a sac fly later in the inning. The Grizzlies won via shrimp in the bottom of the 10th as Tyler White drew a bases-loaded walk.

White (2 RBI), Moran (solo HR), Stassi (2-R HR, 4 R), and Alejandro Garcia (2B) all finished with 3 hits on the evening.

It's Tuesday, and it's a Fresno home game, so you know what that means: Taco Tuesday!!!

Charlie Morton will make his second rehab appearance as he continues to work his way back from a lat strain. He'll take on Matt Flemer at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi is off until Thursday

The Texas League All-Star Game will take place tonight in Frisco. The Hooks' contingent consists of Josh James, Rogelio Armenteros, Garrett Stubbs, Jon Singleton, Drew Ferguson, J.D. Davis, and Jack Mayfield. Kyle Smith was also named a Texas League All-Star; he has since been promoted to Fresno.

The Hooks return to action on Thursday and they'll start off the 2nd half with a tour of Arkansas.

Buies Creek 8, Carolina 1

W- Jorge Alcala (2-3, 4-3 season)
L- Marcos Diplan (4-4)
S- Hector Perez (1)

BC home runs: Anibal Sierra (3, solo in 3rd)

Jorge Alcala and Hector Perez made quick work of the Mudcats on Monday. The Carolina Stros really blew it open with 4 in the 6th.

Alcala has had some issues with walks lately, but he turned in a nice outing. According to Patrick Obley of the Fayetteville Observer, Alcala hit 100 on a few occasions before settling into the mid-90s. He allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4 over 5 shutout innings. Hector Perez went 4 innings and allowed a run on an infield single, one other hit, walked 3, and struck out 5. Perez faced a bases-loaded, no out situation in the 7th, but emerged with the Mudcats only getting one run against him.

Anibal Sierra opened the scoring with a solo blast in the 3rd inning. Later in the frame, Jake Rogers ripped an RBI double and Yordan Alvarez added a sac fly. Buies Creek got three straight singles to open the 6th, and Alex De Goti scored on an error that also allowed Myles Straw to reach; Straw was credited with an RBI on the play. The bases remained loaded for Ryne Birk, who promptly cleared them with a triple. Birk drove in the last run of the evening with a groundout in the 7th inning.

Sierra finished 3-3 with the homer and scored twice. Straw went 3-5 with a double and scored twice as well. Birk (3B, 4 RBI), Rogers (2B, RBI), and Jones (2 R) all had 2 hits on the night.

S- Robert Corniel (1)

TC home runs: Connor MacDonald (1, 2-run in 1st), Jake Adams (2, solo in 6th)

Tri-City scored in fewer innings. No matter. They managed to avoid getting swept at home.

Jake Adams opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 1st. Abraham Toro-Hernandez followed with an RBI single, and Connor MacDonald whacked a 2-run shot. The Lake Monsters managed to tie the game with 2 runs in the 5th, but the deadlock didn't last too long as the ValleyCats hit back for 4 in the 6th.

Adams led off the bottom of the 6th with a homer. Carlos Canelon hit a sac fly, then Andy Piñeda hit an RBI single and wound up scoring on a wild pitch. MacDonald (2-4) and Adams (1-2) both homered and drove in 2 runs.

Fresno 9, Sacramento 2

W- David Martinez (3-6)
L- Chris Stratton (1-4)

Fresno home runs: Max Stassi (4, solo in 6th), D.J. Fisher (16, 2-run in 8th)

David Martinez had a fine outing and D.J. Fisher continues his mastery of PCL pitching.

Martinez allowed an unearned run on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 7 innings of work. The only hit that Brian Holmes allowed in the 8th was a solo homer to Ryder Jones. Holmes also struck out 2 in the inning. Aaron West struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Alejandro Garcia doubled to lead off the 3rd and scored Fresno's first run on a Tyler White groundout. The Grizzlies capitalized on a bases-loaded, no out situation to start the 5th and seized control of the game by scoring 4 runs in the inning. Tony Kemp hit an RBI single, then White followed with a sac fly, which prompted a Sacramento pitching change. Preston Tucker greeted the new pitcher with an RBI single, and Kemp wound up scoring when D.J. Fisher beat a double play attempt. Max Stassi smacked a homer to lead off the 6th, and finally, in the 8th inning, Garcia scored when Tucker grounded into a force play and Fisher capped it off with a 2-run shot.

Stassi reached in all 5 of his plate appearances, going 2-2 with 3 walks. White (2B, 2 RBI) and Fisher (2-R HR, 3 RBI) both went 2-4, and Garcia finished 3-4 with a double and 3 runs scored.

The next stop on Fresno's season-long roadtrip is El Paso. Dean Deetz takes on Zach Lee in game 1, which starts at 7:05 Mountain.

Corpus Christi 11, Frisco 6

W- Brock Dykxhoorn (1-3)
L- David Ledbetter (1-4)

CC home runs: J.D. Davis 2 (16; grand slam in 4th, solo in 7th), Jason Martin (2, 9 season; 2-run in 7th)

The Hooks scored in fewer innings on Thursday, but they put up more runs in the innings which they scored.

Trent Woodward singled to lead off the 2nd, advanced to 3rd when Jack Mayfield hit into a double play attempt that Frisco botched, and scored Corpus Christi's first run on a wild pitch. Mayfield advanced to 3rd on a Jason Martin single. Martin then stole 2nd, and Jamie Ritchie hit a 2-run single to put the Hooks in front.

The Roughriders responded with 3 of their own in the top of the 4th to regain the lead, but Corpus responded with 5 in the bottom of the frame. Kyle Tucker drew a bases-loaded walk and J.D. Davis landed a haymaker when he launched a grand slam. Davis led off the bottom of the 7th with a solo blast and Martin capped off the scoring with a 2-run homer.

Davis (2 HR, 5 RBI), Martin (2-R HR, 2 R, SB), Ritchie (2 RBI), and Tony Nuñez (R) all finished with 2 hits on the evening.

Cy Sneed went 4.1 innings and allowed 6 runs on 8 hits (2 solos and a 3-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 4. The bullpen picked him up with 4.2 scoreless to close out the game. Jacob Dorris allowed a hit, but he got the final two outs of the 5th and spared Sneed from further damage. Brock Dykxhoorn allowed 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7 in 3.1 innings, and Ryan Thompson allowed a single to the first man he faced in the 9th, which loaded the bases, but he got the final two outs of the game without further incident.

Framber Valdez makes his Texas League debut tonight at 7:05. He'll go up against Yohander Mendez.

Wilmington 4, Buies Creek 3 in 15 innings

W- Franco Terrero (1-3)
L- Howie Brey (0-1)

BC home runs: None.

The Blue Rocks got a run in the bottom of the 9th to tie, and it took a while, but they also walked off with the win in the 15th.

Jake Rogers put Buies Creek on the board with a sac fly in the 6th and Myles Straw ripped a 2-run triple in the 7th. The two of them went 2-6 on the evening. Spencer Johnson and Pat Porter both had 3 hits and scored a run. Buies Creek left the bases loaded in the top of the 15th.

Walks doomed Jorge Alcala, who otherwise pitched well in his 4 innings. He allowed 2 runs (1 earned) and just 1 hit, but he also issued 6 walks while striking out 4. Sebastian Kessay was the first man out of the Carolina Stros' bullpen and threw a 1-2-3 5th inning. Yoanys Quiala tagged in for 4 innings and allowed the tying run (which was unearned) on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. Nick Hernandez allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and fanned 2 over 3 scoreless. Howie Brey pitched 2.1 innings and allowed the winning run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

W- Jordan Desguin (4-2)
L- Dustin Hunt (0-5)
S- Parker Berberet (3)

Dustin Hunt pitched 4 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits (2 solo homers), walked 2, and struck out 1. Kevin Hill was the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits in 1.1 innings. Lucas Williams came on and pitched the final 2.2 innings following a 56-minute rain delay, allowing an unearned run on a wild pitch strikeout/error, a single, walked 1, and struck out 4.

Jonathan Arauz put Quad Cities on the board with an RBI triple in the 3rd and trotted home on a Daz Cameron double. Marcos Almonte drove in the River Bandits' other run with an RBI single in the 4th. Almonte, Ray Henderson, and Arauz all went 2-4 on the evening.

Ozziel Sanchez-Galan opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the 1st and came home on a Ronny Rafael groundout. Yorbin Ceuta scored on a wild pitch in the 6th.

Rafael doubled to lead off the 8th and scored on an Anthony Rodriguez double. Rhandall Sanchez chipped in with an RBI single, and Yeuris Ramirez ripped an RBI double. Kendy Moya capped off the day with a 2-run triple. Rodriguez went 2-4 and was the only player on either side with a multi-hit game.

Nivaldo Rodriguez went 4 innings and allowed 2 unearned runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Gustavo Almonte worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 5th, striking out 1. Fredis Guerrero walked 1 and fanned 5 over 4 scoreless to get the win.

These two teams play again at the Red Sox complex at 10:30 AM Eastern.

DSL Dodgers2 6, DSL Astros Orange 4

W- Raul Tales (1-0)
L- Carlos Quintero (0-1)
S- Elio Serrano (1)

Orange home runs: None.

The Orange team only allowed one scoring inning. Unfortunately, that was all the scoring the Dodgers needed.

Christian Mejias allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 in 4 innings. The 5th proved to be a nightmare as Carlos Quintero and Fredy Medina combined to issue 6 walks in the inning. Quintero bore the brunt as all 6 runs were charged to him; 3 were earned and 2 were inherited runners charged to him. He got 2 outs in the inning, allowing a hit and striking out 1. Medina got the final out, but not before allowing a hit and walking 2. Jose Alberto Rivera allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 3 innings.

Leonardo Gonzalez opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 3rd. In the 7th inning, Gerry Castillo ripped an RBI triple and scored on a Hector Martinez double. Martinez scored on a botched pickoff attempt.

Team Orange faces the Dodgers 2 again at 10:30 AM Eastern.

Swept. Again.

Colorado Springs 12, Fresno 5

W- Tyler Cravy (3-0)
L- Reymin Guduan (2-3)
S- Stephen Kohlscheen (1)

Fresno home runs: D.J. Fisher (7, 3-run in 6th), Max Stassi (1, solo in 6th)

The Sky Sox battered the Grizzlies' bullpen in the late innings to take control.

Francis Martes went 3.2 innings and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (solo homer), walked 3, and struck out 5. Kevin Comer was the only Fresno pitcher to turn in a scoreless outing, striking out 1 in 1.1 innings. One of the batters he faced reached on an error.

Reymin Guduan threw a 1-2-3 6th but got the hook after the first two batters reached against him to start the 7th. Both of those runners scored on a 2-run single from Brett Phillips, which occurred after he left. Jordan Jankowski took ownership of the 7th and he managed to strike out the side, but he also allowed a couple of runs of his own in addition to allowing Guduan's runners to score. He also allowed 2 hits and walked 1. Tyson Perez allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in the 8th.

Max Stassi scored the game's first run on a Juan Centeno single in the 2nd inning. D.J. Fisher extended his hit streak to 13 games with a 3-run homer in the 6th, and Stassi followed by launching a solo blast. Stassi and Centeno both finished 2-4 on the evening; Centeno extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

First pitch in this game was pushed back 2 hours due to rain; the game was originally slated to start at 6:40 local time but the rain pushed it all the way back to 8:50.

Fresno will look to avoid the sweep later this morning. Casey Coleman takes on Hiram Burgos at 11:00 AM Mountain time.

San Antonio 5, Corpus Christi 3

W- Brad Wieck (2-1)
L- Andrew Thome (2-1, 2-2 season)
S- Eric Yardley (2)

CC home runs: Trent Woodward (1, 2-run in 8th)

Trent Woodward smacked a 2-run homer in the 8th to put Corpus in front 3-2.... but the Missions responded with a 3-run homer in the top of the 9th to regain the lead. The Hooks have now dropped six straight and are now under .500.

Corpus Christi's other scoring play came in the 3rd as Drew Ferguson hit an RBI single to put them on the board first. Woodward and Mott Hyde both finished 2-3 on the night.

Rogelio Armenteros allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 over 5 shutout innings. Carlos Hiraldo and Andrew Thome both pitched 2 innings: Hiraldo walked 3 and the one hit he allowed was a 2-run homer from Jose Rondon. Thome allowed the go-ahead 3-run homer to Alberth Martinez in the 9th; two of the runs were earned. He allowed two other hits and struck out 1.

Brock Dykxhoorn will take the mound as the Hooks look to avoid the sweep. He'll face Michael Kelly at 7:05.

Buies Creek was off

The Carolina Stros are back home and they'll start a 3-game series with Salem at 7:00 Eastern. Framber Valdez will face Dedgar Jimenez.

Bowling Green 2, Quad Cities 0

W- Ethan Clark (1-0)
L- Enoli Paredes (0-2)
S- Reimin Ramos (1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos' bats went MIA and a decent pitching performance went to waste.

Enoli Paredes wasn't terrible, but he didn't get any run support. He went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Ronel Blanco allowed 2 hits and struck out 3 over the final 2 innings.

The only Quad Cities hits were singles from Alex De Goti and Randy César.

Dustin Hunt gets the start in game 2 of this series. He'll take on J.D. Busfield at 6:35.

Colorado Springs 19, Fresno 7

W- Tim Dillard (1-0)
L- Mike Hauschild (0-1)

Fresno home runs: Jon Kemmer (3, solo in 1st)

This game was surely one to forget for the Fresno Grizzlies. Once again, they lost a series opener.

Mike Hauschild and Keegan Yuhl both had tough nights on the mound, and I think I'll leave it at that. Sean Stutzman allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in 2.1 innings. Aaron West allowed a hit and fanned 2 over 1.1 scoreless, and Andrew Aplin worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 8th.

Jon Kemmer opened the scoring by whacking a solo homer in the 1st inning. This would be the Grizzlies' last scoring play until the 5th; in the meantime, the Sky Sox scored 18 unanswered.

Max Stassi walked to lead off the 5th. Aplin doubled, and Jack Mayfield drove them in with a double. Mayfield came around to score on a single from Derek Fisher. A.J. Reed walked to lead off the 6th and Stassi drove him in with a double. Stassi advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on an Aplin single. Aplin eventually scored on a Tony Kemp groundout.

Stassi and Aplin both went 2-3; both of Stassi's hits were doubles. Fisher and Kemmer finished 2-5; Fisher extended his hit streak to 11 games.

Edison Frias will take on Brandon Woodruff in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 1:30 Mountain.

San Antonio 3, Corpus Christi 2

W- Brett Kennedy (2-1)
L- Kent Emanuel (1-2)
S- Trey Wingenter (1)

CC home runs: Tyler Wolfe (1, 2-run in 8th)

A two-run homer jolted the Hooks back to life but they couldn't push across the tying run in the 9th and dropped their fifth in a row.

Tyler Wolfe was the one who smacked a 2-run homer in the 8th that put Corpus on the board and suddenly made this a one-run game. Garrett Stubbs drew a walk in the bottom of the 9th and managed to advance to 2nd, but he was stranded there to end the game. Drew Ferguson went 2-4 with a double.

Kent Emanuel went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs (all in the 4th) on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Dean Deetz turned in 4 scoreless frames, allowing 2 hits, walking 3, and fanning 4.

Josh James starts game 2 of this series. He'll face Kyle Lloyd at 2:05.

Myrtle Beach 8, Buies Creek 4

W- Oscar de la Cruz (2-2)
L- Justin Ferrell (2-2)
S- Kyle Miller (1)

BC home runs: Kyle Tucker 2 (6; solo in 4th, solo in 9th), Christian Correa (1, solo in 8th)

A big inning from the Pelicans doomed the Carolina Stros for the second straight contest.

Kyle Tucker launched a pair of solo shots to turn in the first multi-homer game of his career. Christian Correa smacked a solo homer of his own in the 8th inning. After Little Tuck's second homer in the 9th, Ryne Birk drew a one-out walk and scored on a double from Pat Porter. Tucker and Porter both finished 2-4 on the evening.

Justin Ferrell went 4.1 innings and allowed 4 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Ralph Garza Jr. got the final two outs of the 5th, one via strikeout, but both of the runners he inherited from Ferrell scored on a 3-run homer that he served up to Eddy Martinez. Garza also allowed a 2-run homer to Matt Rose in that 5th inning for Myrtle Beach. Alex Winkelman allowed an unearned run, 2 hits, and struck out 6 in 3 innings; the run scored on a force out in the 6th.

Matt Bower will take on Ryan Kellogg in the series finale. First pitch is at 3:05 Eastern.

Lake County 13, Quad Cities 3

W- Justin Garza (1-0)
L- Forrest Whitley (1-1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos fell behind 10-0 after 3.5 innings and Forrest Whitley hit the first speed bump of his young career.

Whitley did strike out the side in each of the two innings that he worked, but he got tagged for 4 runs on 5 hits (3-run homer) in the 1st inning. Reggie Johnson was the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen and allowed 5 runs on 4 hits while walking 2 in the 3rd inning. Jorge Alcala allowed a run in the 4th, his first inning of work, but he managed to stop the bleeding. Alcala ended up going 4.2 innings and also allowed 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. Salvador Montaño recorded the last 4 outs, all via strikeout. He also allowed 3 runs (all of which came in the 9th) on 4 hits and walked 1.

All three Quad Cities runs came in the 4th inning: Randy César ripped a 2-run double and came around to score on a single from Rodrigo Ayarza. Stephen Wrenn finished 3-4 with a pair of doubles while Ayarza finished 2-4.

Ryan Hartman gets the start as the River Bandits and Captains wrap up their series at 1:15. He'll be opposed by Juan Hillman.

Fresno 9, Sacramento 5

W- Casey Coleman (1-0)
L- Michael Roth (2-3)

Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (4, 3-run in 1st)

Fresno drew even in the series by storming out to a 7-1 lead after 2 innings.

Casey Coleman went 5 innings in his system debut, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits (3-run homer), walking 3, and striking out 4. Aaron West and Keegan Yuhl both pitched 2 innings: West allowed 3 hits, while Yuhl allowed an unearned run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3.

A.J. Reed put Fresno on the board first with a 3-run homer in the 1st. Max Stassi led off the 2nd with a double, advanced to 3rd on a single from Andrew Aplin, and scored on a Jack Mayfield single. Tony Kemp loaded the bases by legging out an infield single, and then Tyler White walked Aplin home. Preston Tucker followed by ripping a 2-run double. Stassi hit an RBI double in the 5th and scored on another Mayfield RBI single. Kemp, Stassi (2 2B, RBI, 2 R), and Mayfield (2 RBI, R) all finished with 2 hits on the night.

David Martinez will get the start in game 3 of the series. He'll take on Dan Slania at 7:05 Pacific.

Midland 12, Corpus Christi 3

W- Grant Holmes (2-1)
L- Brock Dykxhoorn (0-2)

CC home runs: Jon Singleton (3, 3-run in 3rd)

Not a day to remember for the Hooks pitchers as they got shelled to the tune of five home runs.

Jon Singleton's 3-run blast in the 3rd was Corpus Christi's only scoring play. Drew Ferguson, who scored one of the runs, stole his 7th base of the season. Jamie Ritchie went 2-4.

Brock Dykxhoorn only lasted 2.2 innings and allowed 7 runs on 6 hits (2 2-run homers), walked 4, and struck out 4. Michael Freeman tagged in for 2.1 innings; the three runs he allowed all came on a homer hit by Tyler Marincov in the 6th inning. Freeman also allowed 3 other hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Jacob Dorris pitched the final 3 innings, and Marincov tagged him for a couple of solo shots. He allowed two other hits, walked 2, and fanned 2.

Cy Sneed faces Heath Fillmyer in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 7:00.

Carolina 3, Buies Creek 0

W- Conor Harber (1-1)
L- Yoanys Quiala (3-1)
S- Wuilder Rodriguez (1)

BC home runs: None.

The Mudcats shut out Buies Creek to foil their bid to sweep the series.

The Astros only mustered up three hits, two of which were doubles from Myles Straw and Christian Correa. Kyle Tucker stole two bases, giving him 9 on the year.

Yoanys Quiala and Framber Valdez turned in good outings, but they didn't get any run support. Quiala went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. Framber pitched the final 3 innings and only allowed one hit, a solo homer hit by Jake Gatewood. He also issued a couple of walks and struck out 4.

Hector Perez will make his first Carolina League start in Buies Creek's first game in Myrtle Beach. He'll go up against Thomas Hatch at 7:05 Eastern.

Fort Wayne 4, Quad Cities 0

W- Logan Allen (1-1)
L- Carson LaRue (2-1)

QC home runs: None.

After scoring 9 to take the opener, the Banditos were held off the scoreboard on Wednesday.

Alex De Goti had two of Quad Cities' four hits in this one. Ronnie Dawson and Chuckie Robinson had the other two.

Carson LaRue struck out a career-high 8 in 5 innings, but he also allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (2-run homer). Dustin Hunt was the first man out; he pitched 3 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 2, and striking out 3. Edgardo Sandoval worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 2.

Quad Cities and Fort Wayne will wrap up their series at 6:35 as Brett Adcock faces Jerry Keel.
