The weekend that was in the Houston Astros minor league system. Since this edition of the recaps will cover two days, it will not be as super-detailed as it usually is.

Fresno

The Grizzlies split the first two games in their series with Reno, winning 10-4 on Saturday and losing 12-7 on Sunday. The Grizzlies took Saturday's game thanks to an 8-run 9th inning. On Sunday, however, the Aces turned the tables on them by scoring 6 in the bottom of the 7th to turn a 7-4 Fresno lead into a 10-7 Reno lead. Reno tacked on two more runs in the 8th inning.

Fresno and Reno will continue their series tonight at 7:05 Pacific. Edison Frias will take on Anthony Banda.

Corpus Christi

The Hooks lost both of their games over the weekend and ended up dropping 3 of 4 to Midland. They lost 8-5 on Saturday and fell 4-2 on Sunday.

Corpus will begin a 3-game series with San Antonio tonight at 7:05. Trent Thornton will make his first start at Whataburger Field, and he'll take on Tim Berry.

Lancaster

The JetHawks split their two games with Bakersfield over the weekend, but they ended up taking 3 of 4 from the Blaze. They won 5-3 on Saturday and lost 7-3 on Sunday.

GCL Astros

The Kissimmee Stros lost 5-0 to the Nationals on Saturday in Yulieski Gurriel's U.S. debut. Gurriel went 0-3 with 2 strikeouts. Andy Piñeda and Joan Mauricio both went 2-4.

Brian Holmes allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 4 innings. Forrest Whitley got knocked around in his 1.1 innings, allowing 4 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 4 hits, walking 1, and fanning 2. Carson LaRue pitched 1.2 innings and allowed a run of his own on 3 hits and struck out 1. Manuel Gonzalez allowed a hit and struck out 1 over the final 2 innings.

On Sunday, they lost 6-2 to the Mets. Brody Westmoreland hit a solo homer, his 2nd of the season. Jorge Guzman went 4 innings and allowed an unearned run, a hit, and struck out 5.

DSL Astros Blue

The Blue team topped the Red Sox 4-2 on Saturday. Ronny Jimenez went 2-4 with a triple, RBI, and scored a run. Anibal Sierra finished 1-3 and scored 2 runs.

Ronel Blanco got the win; he allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 over 3 scoreless innings.

DSL Astros Orange

The Orange team jumped out to a 5-0 lead and beat the Mets 2 7-4. Samir Caraballo and Darlin Figueroa both scored 2 runs, while Anthony Rodriguez drove in 2.

Francisco Villegas allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits and struck out 3. Gerardo Bojorquez allowed 2 runs on 8 hits and struck out 1.

Fresno home runs: Jon Kemmer (7, solo in 7th)

No comeback in the cards for the Grizzlies in this one.

Chan-Jong Moon smacked a 2-run double in the 2nd inning to put Fresno on the board and in the lead, and he came around to score on a Tony Kemp single. Jon Kemmer whacked a solo home run in the 7th to bring the Grizzlies to within one run, but that was as close as they could get to the Isotopes. Kemmer finished 2-3 and scored twice. Kemp finished 3-4 with a double.

Brad Peacock went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Jandel Gustave and Reymin Guduan pitched 2 innings apiece; Gustave allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 1, and Guduan allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and fanned 2.

Brady Rodgers will take on Christian Bergman at 5:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 8, Frisco 7 in 14 innings

CC home runs: Conrad Gregor (7, solo in 9th), Nick Tanielu (6, 10 season; solo in 14th)

Nearly 5 hours later, the Hooks walked off with a victory thanks to Nick Tanielu's solo blast after the 2nd 7th-inning stretch.

Tanielu scored Corpus Christi's first run of the evening on an error following a Conrad Gregor single in the 2nd inning. Nolan Fontana sparked a 7th inning rally with a double. Garrett Stubbs and D.J. Fisher joined him on the basepaths by drawing walks. J.D. Davis was the first casualty of the inning, but Danry Vásquez was able to come through with a 2-run single. A Tanielu RBI groundout tied the game at 4.

The Riders scored 2 in the top of the 8th to re-take the lead, but the Hooks were able to keep pace. Ramon Laureano led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a Garrett Stubbs single. Unfortunately, Corpus left the bases loaded in the 8th inning. However, with one out in the bottom of the 9th, Gregor tied the game with a solo home run.

Corpus Christi foiled Frisco threats in the 11th and 13th, but the Roughriders scored a run in the top of the 14th, and so, the Hooks were down to their last chance once again. Tanielu led off the 14th with a game-tying solo home run. Mott Hyde struck out but was able to reach base safely. Laureano got plunked, and they both advanced a base when James Ramsay laid down a sacrifice bunt. Fontana was intentionally walked to bring up Stubbs, who sent the remaining fans at Whataburger Field home happy with a game-winning single.

Stubbs finished 4-7, while Gregor (solo HR), Tanielu (solo HR, 2 RBI, 2 R), and Laureano (2 2B, R) had 3 hits apiece. Danry and Ramsay both finished with 2 hits.

Keegan Yuhl went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and struck out 5. Eric Peterson was the first man out of the Hooks bullpen, and in 3.2 innings, he allowed 2 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 3 hits and struck out 1. Ryan Thompson went 3 innings and allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Chris Cotton was next; he allowed 3 hits and struck out 1 in 2.1 innings. Albert Minnis got 3 groundouts and allowed a solo homer to Luis Marte in the 14th, which was the only hit he allowed in the inning.

Kent Emanuel will start the series finale. He'll take on Yohander Mendez at 6:05.

Lancaster 6, High Desert 3

Lancaster home runs: None.

The JetHawks fell behind 3-0 early thanks to a High Desert home run, but Akeem Bostick bounced back, and he, Andrew Thome, and Ryan Deemes kept the Mavs off the scoreboard.

Bostick allowed a 3-run home run to David Lyon in the 2nd inning, which was High Desert's only scoring play. In 6 innings, Bostick allowed 5 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Thome allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Deemes struck out 1 over 1.1 innings to get the save.

Lancaster wasted little time in mounting a response; they scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to take the lead. Marc Wik walked to lead off the inning. He advanced to 3rd on a Jamie Ritchie single and scored the JetHawks' first run when Johnny Sewald beat out a bunt single. Osvaldo Duarte reached on a bunt single to load the bases, and Aaron Mizell followed with a sac fly. Bobby Boyd drove in the tying run with a groundout, and Tony Nuñez put Lancaster in front with an RBI single. An error in the 5th inning allowed Bobby Boyd and Nuñez to score. Sewald finished 2-4.

In the final game of this series, Jose Luis Hernandez will make his California League debut. He'll take on Reed Garrett at 5:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 9, Bowling Green 3

QC home runs: Randy César (1, 2 season; 2-run in 1st), Dex McCall (5, 3-run in 3rd), Pat Porter (6, solo in 3rd)

The Banditos put on a show of power early as they cruised to a win.

Kyle Tucker opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 1st inning. Dex McCall followed with an RBI single, and Randy César connected on his first Midwest League homer, a 2-run shot. McCall launched a 3-run home run in the 3rd, and Pat Porter followed McCall's blast by launching a solo homer. Anthony Hermelyn drove in the final Quad Cities run of the evening with an RBI double in the 6th inning.

Chris Murphy also delivered a nice outing on the mound; he went 7 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits and struck out 2. Justin Ferrell pitcched the final 2 innings, and the 2 runs he allowed came on a 2-run homer hit by Kewby Meyer in the 9th inning. Ferrell allowed one other hit and struck out 3.

Hector Perez will make his Midwest League debut tonight. He'll face Jose Mujica at 5:15.

Tri-City 8, Staten Island 4

TC home runs: Stephen Wrenn (9, solo in 1st)

The ValleyCats avoided the sweep as they got some 9th-inning insurance runs to secure the victory.

Tri-City quickly had two outs against them in the 1st inning, but Stephen Wrenn opened up the scoring with a solo home run. In the 3rd, Ronnie Dawson drew a bases-loaded walk, and Brauly Mejia cleared them with a double; he was credited with 2 RBI on the play, Dawson scored on an error. Actually, two errors occurred on the play which allowed Dawson to score and Mejia was able to advance to 3rd base. Alex De Goti hit an RBI single in the 9th, and Rodrigo Ayarza capped off the scoring with a 2-run double. Wrenn finished 2-5 with 2 runs scored and also stole a base (8).

Sebastian Kessay went 3.2 innings and allowed 2 runs, a solo home run, walked 5, and struck out 4. The other run that Kessay allowed scored on a double play in the 3rd. Erasmo Pinales tagged in for 4.1 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits (solo homer) and struck out 4. Nick Hernandez walked 1 and struck out 1 in a scoreless 9th.

Framber Valdez will start for Tri-City as they get set to begin a series with Vermont. He'll take on Ivan Andueza at 5:00 Eastern.

Bristol 4, Greeneville 1

Greeneville home runs: None.

Both teams put up 7 zeroes on the scoreboard, and then the Pirates busted out for 4 runs in the 8th inning.

Abraham Toro's RBI groundout in the 8th was the Appy Astros' only scoring play. Miguelangel Sierra and Vicente Sanchez both finished 2-3.

Abdiel Saldaña pitched 4 innings and allowed 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. Angelo Serrano was the first man out of Greeneville's bullpen, and he threw a 1-2-3 5th. Ricardo Castro pitched 3 innings and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. Lucas Williams allowed a hit in a scoreless 9th inning.

Greeneville and Bristol will conclude their series tonight at 6:00 Eastern,

DSL Astros Blue 9, DSL Marlins 4

Blue home runs: None.

This game was tied at 4 after 3 innings, but the Blue team scored the final 5 runs to get the win. They continued their rampage on the basepaths, succeeding on all 6 of their attempts, including a steal of home.

Ronny Jimenez scored the first run of the day in the 1st inning following an error after Jose Benjamin stole 2nd. Jimenez grounded into a force out in the 3rd that scored Ozziel Sanchez-Galan and scored on a wild pitch. Benjamin also scored on a wild pitch. Sanchez-Galan smacked an RBI double in the 4th, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and stole home. Nestor Tejada hit a one-out triple in the 8th and scored on a Nicolás Miranda single. In the 9th, Carlos Canelon and Tejada hit RBI singles.

Tejada (3B, RBI, R) finished 3-4, while Canelon (RBI, 2 R, SB) and Sanchez-Galan (2B, RBI, 2 R, SB) had 2 hits apiece.

Felipe Tejada went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Yeremi Ceballos allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 3 over 2 scoreless innings, and Carlos Perdomo pitched the final 3 innings, allowing a hit, walking 3, and striking out 4.

The Rangers scored 3 in the top of the 8th to break an 8-8 tie.

The Orange team scored 4 runs in the 1st; 3 of them scored on an error on a botched force out attempt. Gilberto Celestino, who hit that grounder, advanced to 3rd and ended up scoring on a wild pitch. In the 3rd, Yeuris Ramirez hit an RBI single and Jose Abel Hernandez grounded into a force out that scored Vicente Mota. Kendy Moya scored on a wild pitch in the 4th and Bernardo Heras hit an RBI groundout in the 5th inning. Celestino got a run back in the 8th with a sac fly. Moya scored 3 runs and stole a base, his 7th.

Diosward Gonzalez allowed 5 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him), a hit, walked 4, and struck out 2 in 1+ inning of work. Kilvio Peralta was the first man out, and he allowed a run of his own, in addition to allowing the runners he inherited from Gonzalez to score, 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Gabriel Pirela pitched 2.1 innings and allowed 5 runs (3 earned, 3 inherited runners charged to him) on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Jose Bravo allowed 2 hits, and the 3 runners he inherited from Pirela all scored.

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies had to settle for the split as they were blanked for the final 8 innings after scoring 2 in the 1st.

Those 2 runs came courtesy of a Danny Worth RBI groundout and a Matt Duffy RBI single. Andrew Aplin went 3-5 with a triple and a run scored, and Preston Tucker was 2-4 with a double, a triple, and scored a run.

Tommy Shirley had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 8 hits (2 solo homers), walking 2, and striking out 7. Josh Fields fanned 2 in 1.2 perfect innings, and Reymin Guduan got the final out of the 8th with a strikeout.

Brad Peacock will be on the mound as the Grizzlies return home to begin a 4-game series with El Paso. He'll face Carlos Pimentel at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 3, Northwest Arkansas 2

CC home runs: Roberto Peña (1, 2-run in 2nd), Teoscar Hernandez (4, solo in 8th)

Teoscar Hernandez's solo shot in the 8th was the difference in this one. All 3 Corpus runs came off of homers. Roberto Peña opened the scoring with a 2-run homer in the 2nd, his 1st home run of the year.

Teoscar, Alex Bregman, D.J. Fisher (BB, 2 SB [9]), and Nick Tanielu all had 2 hits in this game; Peña's homer was the other hit.

Francis Martes went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 3, and struck out 6. Eric Peterson got the final 2 outs of the 7th, and Brendan McCurry allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 to record a 2-inning save.

In game 2 of this series, Evan Grills will take on Jake Junis. First pitch is at 6:05.

Lancaster 8, Inland Empire 2

Lancaster home runs: None.

After Inland Empire scored a run in the 4th to break a 1-1 tie, the JetHawks seized control with a 5-run 5th and tacked on a couple more runs in the 9th for good measure to complete the sweep.

Both teams scored in the 1st. Ramon Laureano hit a 2-out triple and scored the first run of the evening on a single from Bryan Muñiz. Lancaster fell behind briefly, but they responded with a huge 5th inning. Bobby Boyd legged out an RBI bunt single to tie the game at 2. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Muñiz drew a walk to put Lancaster in front. Boyd scored when Aaron Mizell grounded into a force out, and Drew Ferguson ripped a 2-run double. An error in the 9th following a single from Laureano allowed Luis Reynoso and Jason Martin to score the final 2 runs of the night. Laureano (3B, RBI, 2 R) and Ferguson (2-R 2B) had 2 hits apiece.

The Banditos dropped game 1 of the series as they couldn't muster up much offense in support of Chris Murphy.

Murphy allowed 2 runs on 8 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4 in 7 innings of work. Solid start, but unfortunately, he had to take the L. Justin Ferrell allowed a hit and fanned 1 over the final 2 innings.

Kyle Tucker tripled in the 6th and scored the River Bandits' only run on a Dex McCall groundout. The two of them both finished 2-4; Tucker's other hit was a double.

Yoanys Quiala will start game 2 of this series. He'll face Jared Ruxer at 6.

Fresno home runs: Jon Singleton (7, 3-run in 5th)

The Grizz jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but they had to hang on for dear life as Tacoma mounted a furious comeback bid. In the end, though, Fresno escaped with the win.

Nolan Fontana opened the scoring with an RBI groundout in the 2nd. Later in the frame, Colin Moran ripped an RBI double. Matt Duffy hit an RBI double of his own in the 4th, and Jon Singleton crushed a 3-run homer in the 5th. Moran (2B, RBI, R), Duffy (2B, RBI, R), Tony Kemp (2 R), Eury Perez (2B, R), and Andrew Aplin (R, SB [6], BB) all had 2 hits in this game. Kemp extended his hitting streak to 9 games.

Mike Hauschild had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 4 hits (3-run homer), walking 1, and striking out 5. Jordan Jankowski went 2 innings and allowed 3 runs (all in the 7th), a 2-run homer, walked 2, and struck out 3; the 3rd run scored when he uncorked a wild pitch. James Hoyt crushed the rally by shutting the door; he struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Tommy Shirley will start game 3 of this series. He'll face Adrian Sampson at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi was off

They didn't play on Wednesday, like I originally thought (my bad, everyone). Anyway, the Texas League edition of the Lone Star Series kicks off tonight at 7:05, as Cy Sneed takes on Connor Sadzeck.

The JetHawks couldn't close out this game and ended up walking off with a loss.

Josh James went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 8. Trent Thornton also went 4 innings; the only hit he allowed was a solo homer to Johan Mieses. Thornton struck out 7 in his outing. Angel Heredia only got 1 out in the 9th as he allowed the 2 runs that won it for Rancho. He allowed 2 hits and walked 1.

Marc Wik put Lancaster on the board with an RBI single in the 2nd. Nick Tanielu finished 3-5; he hit RBI singles in the 4th and the 5th. Garrett Stubbs and Alejandro Garcia also hit RBI singles in the 5th. Wik and Jamie Ritchie (2B, R) both went 2-4, while Ramon Laureano scored 2 runs, walked 3 times, and stole 2 bases (11).

The JetHawks will look to avoid the sweep as Scott Weathersby takes the mound. He'll go up against Josh Sborz at 7:05 Pacific.

The River Bandits' comeback bid in game 1 fell just short.

Dex McCall opened the scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the 1st. Johnny Sewald, who scored the first run of the game, hit an RBI single in the 2nd. Kyle Tucker smacked an RBI double in the 4th to tie the game at 3. He singled to lead off the 7th and scored on a triple from Pat Porter. McCall brought Porter home with a groundout.

Sewald and Tucker both finished with 2 hits and a stolen base; Sewald now has 14, while Tucker is the system's new leader in stolen bases with 15.

Jose Luis Hernandez went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 1. Andrew Thome pitched the final 2 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits and struck out 2.

What did game 2 have in store for Quad Cities?

Chris Murphy went the distance for the first time in his professional career, which allowed the Banditos to split the twinbill and take the series. He dispatched the Bees in 97 minutes, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 3.

Anthony Hermelyn's RBI triple in the 1st was the only scoring play of game 2. Kyle Tucker's multi-hit game streak is over, but he did extend his hitting streak to 5 games.

The River Bandits are in Beloit, Wisconsin, where they'll start a 4-game series with the Snappers tonight at 6:30. Yoanys Quiala will make his 2016 debut; he'll take on Angel Duno.
