The Grizzlies were kept off the board, and the Rainiers put this game away with 3 runs in the 6th.

Alejandro Garcia had 2 of Fresno's 3 hits in this game, which were all singles. Tyler Heineman had the other single.

Brady Rodgers was pulled after 2 innings, walking 1 and striking out 4. Chris Cotton was the first man out, and in 3 innings, he allowed an unearned run on a groundout, a single, and walked 2. Reymin Guduan only recorded one out in the 6th; he allowed 3 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him), a single, and walked 2. Kevin Chapman allowed 2 hits and struck out 4 in 1.2 innings, and James Hoyt allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in the 8th.

Trent Thornton delivered yet another fine performance on the mound and the Hooks doubled up the Roughriders to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Thornton allowed 2 runs on 8 hits and struck out 2 in his 8 innings, and Jacob Dorris struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th to get the save.

Drew Ferguson led off the 4th with a triple and scored the Hooks' first run on a sac fly from Mott Hyde. Frisco re-took the lead with a run in the 5th, but Corpus scored the final three runs of the game.

Ferguson drew a two-out walk in the 6th and scored the tying run on a Conrad Gregor triple. J.D. Davis drew a bases-loaded walk in the 7th, and Roberto Peña drove in the final run of the evening with a groundout in the 8th. Ferguson and Nick Tanielu finished with 2 hits apiece in this game.

In game 3 of this series, Francis Martes will face Connor Sadzeck. First pitch is at 7:05.

Lancaster 15, Rancho Cucamonga 1

Lancaster home runs: Jason Martin (23, 3-run in 8th)

The JetHawks turned this game into a laugher by scoring 11 runs in the final 3 innings.

Everyone in the starting 9+1 scored a run, and Jason Martin, fresh off a 2-homer night, launched another home run.

Brock Dykxhoorn dominated on the mound, allowing 3 hits, walking 2, and striking out 8 over 7 shutout innings. Rancho spoiled the shutout by scoring a run off of Juan Carlos Santos in the 8th. In 2 innings, Santos allowed 6 hits and struck out 1. 

In the series finale, Akeem Bostick will face Chris Anderson. First pitch is at 6:35 Pacific.

Kane County 5, Quad Cities 2

QC home runs: Stephen Wrenn (3, 12 season; 2-run in 3rd)

Stephen Wrenn's homer gave the Banditos a 2-1 lead, but that was their only scoring play of the game, and the Cougars scored the final 4 runs of the game to win on Wednesday. Bobby Wernes finished 2-4 out of the leadoff spot.

Framber Valdez allowed 3 runs (2 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 in 6.2 innings. Nick Hernandez got the final out of the 7th and the first two outs of the 8th; he allowed 2 unearned runs that scored after he left, 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Zac Person struck out 1 over the final 1.1 innings.

Hector Perez will start game 2 of this series. He'll go up against Carlos Hernandez at 7:00.

Vermont 5, Tri-City 3

TC home runs: Connor Goedert (2, 7 season; solo in 3rd)

The ValleyCats tied the game at 3 in the top of the 6th... but the Lake Monsters quickly broke the tie with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the inning. 

Connor Goedert's solo blast in the 3rd inning put Tri-City on the board and tied the game at 1 at that point. Vermont responded with 2 in the bottom of the 3rd to regain the lead, but the ValleyCats clawed their way back into it, as Rodrigo Ayarza hit an RBI single in the 5th and Taylor Jones ripped an RBI double in the 6th. Ayarza went 2-4 out of the leadoff spot.

Jorge Alcala went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9. Erasmo Pinales pitched 2 innings, and the 2 runs he allowed came on a home run hit by JaVon Shelby in the 6th inning. Pinales allowed one other hit, walked 2, and struck out 3. Devin Raftery threw a 1-2-3 9th; he got 2 groundouts and recorded a strikeout.

The ValleyCats are back at The Joe for their final home series of the season. Makay Nelson will start the first of a 3-game series with Staten Island at 7:00 Eastern, and he'll go up against his fellow Utahn, Kolton Mahoney.

Greeneville 6, Elizabethton 2

Greeneville home runs: None.

The Appy Astros jumped out to a 5-0 lead to win their penultimate game of the season.

Juan Robles went 3 innings and allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Jorge Guzman was the first man out of the bullpen, and all he did in his 4 innings was allow 2 hits and strike out 5. The Twins spoiled the shutout with 2 runs off Reggie Johnson; both of them were unearned. Johnson allowed 2 hits and fanned 2 in his 2 innings of work.

Stijn van der Meer doubled to lead off the bottom of the 1st inning. He advanced to 3rd when Frankeny Fernandez laid down a sacrifice bunt and scored the first run of the evening on an Abraham Toro sac fly. In the 4th, Jonathan Arauz hit a sac fly and Ruben Castro added a 2-run single. Van der Meer hit a one-out single in the 5th and dashed home on a Frankeny Fernandez triple. Castro, who finished 2-4, capped off the scoring with an RBI triple in the 9th. Chaz Pal (2B, R) and van der Meer (2B, 2 R) also finished with 2 hits.

The Appy Astros will wrap up their season tonight at 7:00 Eastern. Diogenes Almengo will take on Jose Martinez.

GCL Astros 5, GCL Marlins 0

The Kissimmee Stros busted out for 4 runs in the 4th, and 4 pitchers combined to keep the Marlins off the board.

Tyson Perez made his 2016 debut in the second-to-last game of the season, and he allowed a hit and struck out 1 in a scoreless 1st inning. Bryan Abreu was the first man out, and in 3 innings, he allowed 3 hits and struck out 5. Ronel Blanco allowed 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4 over 2.2 scoreless, and Hansel Paulino walked 1 and struck out 4 over the final 2.1 innings.

Bernardo Heras opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 4th inning, and Brody Westmoreland followed with an RBI single of his own. L.P. Pelletier capped off the scoring in the inning with a 2-run single, and Jose Benjamin ripped an RBI double in the 5th. Benjamin finished 3-4, while Pelletier and Wander Franco both went 2-4.

This game served as the GCL Astros' season finale; today's game with the Cardinals was cancelled due to wet grounds.

The Grizzlies were kept off the scoreboard on Friday night. Three of their 5 hits were doubles; Jon Kemmer, Alejandro Garcia, and Jack Mayfield had the two-baggers.

David Paulino went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 8. Brendan McCurry and Kevin Chapman followed with 2 scoreless innings apiece; McCurry allowed 2 hits and struck out 3, while Chapman allowed a hit and struck out 1.

Evan Grills will start game 4 of this series. Word on the street is that Matt Cain will make a rehab start for Sacramento. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 7, Midland 0

CC home runs: Drew Ferguson (1, 15 season; 2-run in 6th), J.D. Davis (20, 2-run in 7th)

Drew Ferguson broke a scoreless tie in the 6th, the Hooks poured it on in the 7th, and Francis Martes and Eric Peterson shut down the Midland offense. Martes allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4 over 7 shutout innings, and Peterson finished it off by striking out 4 over 2 perfect frames.

Ferguson finished 3-4, and his two-run homer in the 6th accounted for the game's first two runs. Mott Hyde got hit by a pitch to lead off the 7th, and he eventually scored on an error following a Tony Nuñez bunt single. Nick Tanielu added a 2-run single, and J.D. Davis capped off the evening by launching a 2-run home run, his 20th blast of the season. Nuñez (2 BB, R, SB) and Davis had 2 hits apiece.

Tonight, the Hooks will begin their final home series of the season, a 3-game set with San Antonio. Rogelio Armenteros will face Kyle Lloyd at 7:00.

Modesto 4, Lancaster 2

The Nuts had more two-run innings than the JetHawks, so naturally, they won this game.

Lancaster's two-run inning was the 8th: Trent Woodward led off the inning with a homer, and Jason Martin hit a sac fly. Woodward finished 2-3 on the night.

Elieser Hernandez went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3. Andrew Thome allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 4 over the final 3 innings.

In game 2 of this series, Albert Abreu will face Colin Welmon. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Wisconsin 2, Quad Cities 1

The Banditos' offensive woes continued, and the Rattlers nipped them with a two-out RBI single in the top of the 9th.

Bobby Wernes had 2 of the 3 River Bandits in this game; he doubled to lead off the bottom of the 1st, and his RBI single was the Banditos' only scoring play. The other hit was a single from Dex McCall.

Enrique Chavez allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 over 7 strong innings. Wisconsin got the go-ahead run off of Nick Hernandez, who went 2 innings and allowed 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2.

Yoanys Quiala will start game 2 of this series. He'll face Jordan Desguin at 6:00.

Lowell 5, Tri-City 4

The ValleyCats tied the game at 3 in the 8th .... only to see Lowell SS C.J. Chatham put the Spinners back in front with a 2-run homer in the top of the 9th. TC managed to pull a run back in the 9th, but they stranded the tying run on 2nd to end the game.

Tyler Wolfe scored the first run of the evening on an error in the 3rd that allowed Carmen Benedetti to reach. Kevin Martir hit an RBI single in the 6th, and he added a sac fly to his ledger in the 8th inning, and Benedetti hit a sac fly to bring the ValleyCats to within a run. Wolfe and Ronnie Dawson scored 2 runs apiece. Dawson and Rodrigo Ayarza both went 2-5, while Taylor Jones finished 3-4.

Jorge Alcala pitched 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 8 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 2. Erasmo Pinales tagged in to throw 3 scoreless innings, walking 1 and striking out 4. Devin Raftery pitched 2 innings, and the two runs he allowed came on Chatham's 2nd home run of the game. He allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 4.

The Appy Astros kept themselves alive in the playoff chase by taking 2 of 3 from the Braves.

Jorge Guzman and Juan Robles joined forces to keep Danville off the board; Guzman allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 7 over 5 innings, and Robles pitched the final 4 innings, allowing 4 hits and fanning 4.

Ruben Castro led off the 3rd with a single and scored the first run of the game on an error following a Frankeny Fernandez sacrifice bunt. Castro scored another run off another error in the 5th inning; this miscue came off a single from Abraham Toro. Not long after, Fernandez scored on a balk. Troy Sieber doubled to lead off the 8th and came around to score on a Carlos Machado single. Toro, Machado, Castro, and Stijn van der Meer all finished 2-4.

Tonight, the Appy Astros will begin a series with the team directly above them in the Appalachian League West standings, Elizabethton. Patrick Sandoval will get the start, and he'll take on Tyler Wells at 6:00 Eastern.

The Kissimmee Stros scored 2 runs in the 1st, which turned out to be enough for them to get the win.

Ronel Blanco and Yohan Ramirez were the first 2 pitchers for the GCL club, and they were making their US debuts. Blanco allowed a hit and struck out 3 in 3 innings of work, and Ramirez went 2 innings, allowing 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2. Gabriel Valdez allowed a hit and struck out 3 over 3 scoreless, and Josue Uribe walked 1 and struck out 2 in the 9th to get the save.

Wander Franco opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Jose Benjamin grounded into a force out that allowed Ronny Jimenez to score. Jimenez and Randy Vasquez both finished 2-4.

DSL Astros Orange 5, DSL Rangers2 3

The Orange team got a pair of runs in the 6th to break a 3-3 tie.

Euclides Chavez scored the first run of the game in the 2nd inning on an error following a Kelvin Perez single. The Orange team got two runs in the 3rd on a pair of RBI singles from Jose Abel Hernandez and Chavez. Jose Carrillo scored the go-ahead run on a balk in the 6th, and Samir Caraballo, who was at the plate at the time, added an RBI single. Caraballo, Chavez, Carrillo, and Hector Martinez all had 2 hits on the day.

Gerardo Bojorquez went 3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (2 solo homers), walked 1, and struck out 2. Christian Mejias allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 over 2 scoreless, and Diosward Gonzalez allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 over 4 scoreless for the save.

Results for Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31, 2016

The weekend that was in the Houston Astros minor league system. Since this edition of the recaps will cover two days, it will not be as super-detailed as it usually is.

Fresno

The Grizzlies split the first two games in their series with Reno, winning 10-4 on Saturday and losing 12-7 on Sunday. The Grizzlies took Saturday's game thanks to an 8-run 9th inning. On Sunday, however, the Aces turned the tables on them by scoring 6 in the bottom of the 7th to turn a 7-4 Fresno lead into a 10-7 Reno lead. Reno tacked on two more runs in the 8th inning.

Fresno and Reno will continue their series tonight at 7:05 Pacific. Edison Frias will take on Anthony Banda.

The Kissimmee Stros lost 5-0 to the Nationals on Saturday in Yulieski Gurriel's U.S. debut. Gurriel went 0-3 with 2 strikeouts. Andy Piñeda and Joan Mauricio both went 2-4.

Brian Holmes allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 4 innings. Forrest Whitley got knocked around in his 1.1 innings, allowing 4 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 4 hits, walking 1, and fanning 2. Carson LaRue pitched 1.2 innings and allowed a run of his own on 3 hits and struck out 1. Manuel Gonzalez allowed a hit and struck out 1 over the final 2 innings.

On Sunday, they lost 6-2 to the Mets. Brody Westmoreland hit a solo homer, his 2nd of the season. Jorge Guzman went 4 innings and allowed an unearned run, a hit, and struck out 5.

DSL Astros Orange

The Orange team jumped out to a 5-0 lead and beat the Mets 2 7-4. Samir Caraballo and Darlin Figueroa both scored 2 runs, while Anthony Rodriguez drove in 2.

Francisco Villegas allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits and struck out 3. Gerardo Bojorquez allowed 2 runs on 8 hits and struck out 1.

Fresno home runs: Alex Bregman (5, 19 season; solo in 1st), Tyler White (5, 2-run in 3rd), Preston Tucker (8, solo in 8th)

The Grizzlies opened up a new series by dominating the Aces in all facets of the game. They led 4-0 after the 5th, but they turned this one into a laugher in the late innings.

Mike Hauschild and Reymin Guduan combined on a 2-hitter; Hauschild pitched 8 innings and allowed those 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9, and Guduan struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th inning.

Everyone in the Fresno lineup recorded a hit and scored a run. Alex Bregman continues to be good at baseball, and Preston Tucker and Tyler White seem to have found themselves at the plate once again after a tough start to their seasons in Houston.

In game 2 of this series, Tommy Shirley will face Edwin Escobar. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

The Hooks broke a 2-2 tie with a couple of runs in the 9th inning that came off a couple of miscues from the Cardinals.

Prior to that 9th inning, Corpus Christi's only scoring play was a 2-run double from Garrett Stubbs in the 2nd.

Danry Vásquez doubled to lead off the 9th inning, and Chase McDonald joined him on the bases by drawing a walk. Stubbs grounded into a force out that erased McDonald, but an errant throw from Cardinals SS Juan Herrera allowed Danry to score the go-ahead run, and Stubbs advanced to 2nd base. Stubbs advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Alejandro Garcia. Danry finished 3-4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored, while Stubbs went 2-4.

Francis Martes went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. Scott Weathersby got the win in his Texas League debut, allowing a hit and striking out 3 over 2 scoreless innings. Ryan Thompson allowed an unearned run on 2 hits in the 9th, but he was able to secure the victory.

The Hooks will look for the sweep tonight as Evan Grills gets the start. He'll face Daniel Poncedeleon at 7:10.

Lancaster 9, Visalia 6

The JetHawks took the series as they built up an 8-1 lead and withstood a charge from the Rawhide.

Jamie Ritchie's 3-run home run in the 2nd inning put Lancaster on the board first. In the 3rd, Keach Ballard hit a 2-run single. Drew Ferguson hit a sac fly in the 5th, and the JetHawks scored 2 in the 6th on a pair of RBI singles from Bobby Boyd and Jason Martin. Ferguson drove in the final run of the evening with a bases-loaded walk in the 8th. Everyone in the JetHawks lineup had a hit; Martin led the way in that category by going 3-5. He also stole his 11th base of the season. Ritchie and Aaron Mizell had 2 hits apiece, and Ramon Laureano stole 2 bases, giving him 31 on the season.

Trent Thornton allowed 4 runs on 9 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 in 6.2 innings. Gonzalo Sañudo recorded the final out of the 7th and the first out of the 8th and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and walked 1. Ryan Deemes successfully extracted Sañudo from the jam without incurring any further damage, and he proceeded to throw 1.2 perfect innings, striking out 2.

Rogelio Armenteros will start the first of a 4-game series with Inland Empire tonight at 7:05 Pacific. He will go up against Jake Jewell.

Quad Cities 5, Beloit 4

QC home runs; None.

The Snappers scored 2 in the top of the 8th to take a 4-3 lead, but the Banditos rallied with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take the win and the series.

Quad Cities took the lead with a 3-run 4th inning: Kyle Tucker put them on the board with an RBI double, Arturo Michelena scored on a passed ball, and Anthony Hermelyn added a sacrifice fly.

Hector Roa singled to lead off the 8th, and Myles Straw came in to pinch-run for him. Kristian Trompiz followed with a single, but two consecutive outs following the hits put the River Bandits' rally in jeopardy. However, Arturo Michelena came through with a 2-run single that wound up becoming the game-winning hit. Michelena went 2-4 and was the only player in the Quad Cities lineup with more than one hit.

Matt Bower went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. Makay Nelson was the first man out of the Banditos bullpen; he went 2.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Adam Whitt walked 1 over 1.1 scoreless and got the victory.

The River Bandits will begin a 4-game series with Clinton tonight at 7:00. In game 1, Franklin Perez will face Nick Neidert.

Tri-City was off

The ValleyCats will begin a 3-game series tonight against West Virginia at 7:05 Eastern. I originally thought that they were playing on Thursday; I sincerely regret the error.

Greeneville 7, Burlington 6

Greeneville home runs: Ray Henderson (2, solo in 6th)

The Royals got the jump once play resumed, but the Appy Astros stormed back and walked off with a victory.

Connor MacDonald put Greeneville on the board with an RBI groundout in the 2nd inning, and Ray Henderson led off the 6th with a home run. Business really began to pick up in the bottom of the 8th.

Miguelangel Sierra smacked a triple to lead off the inning and trotted home on a Jonathan Arauz single. Henderson, Frankeny Fernandez, and Bryan De La Cruz all followed by drawing walks. MacDonald hit a sac fly, and Fernandez scored the tying run on an error. Henderson won it in the 9th with a sac fly.

Abdiel Saldaña pitched 1+ inning on Wednesday and allowed 2 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Ricardo Castro took the mound once the game restarted, and he went 2.2 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits, walking 2, and striking out 4. Angelo Serrano followed with 3 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 4. Reggie Johnson allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in 1.1 innings, and Josue Uribe allowed a hit and struck out 1 in a scoreless 9th.

Ben Smith, Salvador Montaño, and Lucas Williams all pitched 2 innings; Smith allowed 5 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Montaño was the first man out of the Greeneville bullpen and allowed 2 unearned runs, an RBI single, walked 2, and struck out 1. Williams allowed 6 runs on 6 hits and struck out 1. Colin McKee struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 7th.

Oscar Campos opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 2nd, and Wilson Amador added an RBI groundout in the 7th. Joan Mauricio (3B, R, SB [2]) and Reiny Beltre (2B) had 2 hits apiece in this game.

The Blue team walked off with a loss in a game that began a couple of weeks ago.

Orlando Marquez opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 4th, and Ronny Jimenez hit an RBI single of his own in the 5th inning. César Cortez scored on a passed ball in the 6th inning. Cortez and Nicolás Miranda had 2 hits apiece.

Juan Corniel struck out 4 over 4 perfect innings. Robert Corniel went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (2-run homer) and struck out 4. Juan Cuevas faced 3 batters in the 9th and failed to retire any of them; the first two singled and the third laid down a sacrifice bunt. On the sac bunt, Cuevas committed an error that allowed the winning run to score.

DSL Dodgers2 3, DSL Astros Blue 2

Edwin Fidel allowed a run on a bases-loaded walk, a single, walked 2, and struck out 4 in 1.2 innings. Yulian Frontado got him out of the jam without allowing any more runs. In 3.1 innings, Frontado allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Maikel Sepulveda allowed an unearned run on a passed ball, a single, walked 1, and struck out 1 in the 6th, and the winning run scored on a single with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th against Yeremi Ceballos; it was unearned. Ceballos walked 1 and struck out 1.
