Astros Minor League Playoff Recaps

Results for Thursday, September 5, 2019

PCL Semifinals: Round Rock 4, Iowa 3 (10 innings)

Round Rock leads series 2-0.

W- Riley Ferrell
L- Jordan Minch

RR home runs: None.

Make it two straight walk-off wins for the Express as they now have three chances to close out this series. They scored two in the 7th to tie and walked off with the win in the first extra frame.

Brandon Bielak turned in a bare minimum quality start (6 IP, 3 ER), allowing eight hits (solo homer), walking one, and striking out three. Bryan Abreu and Riley Ferrell finished things off with two scoreless innings apiece; Abreu walked two and struck out three while Ferrell allowed a hit and struck out one.

Round Rock loaded the bases to lead off the 2nd inning but all they could get out of it was an RBI infield single from Stephen Wrenn. Nick Tanielu walked and Alex De Goti doubled to lead off the 7th; Jamie Ritchie atoned for hitting into a double play in the 2nd with an RBI single in the 7th and De Goti scored the tying run when Ronnie Dawson hit into a force out. Drew Ferguson walked to lead off the 10th and advanced on a wild pitch. Jack Mayfield also drew a walk and one batter later, Taylor Jones won the game with an RBI single. Jones finished 2-5 on the night while De Goti went 3-4 with a double.

The series now heads to Des Moines for the next three games. Hopefully, it'll only take one. Rogelio Armenteros gets the start in game three and he'll take on Kendall Graveman at 7:08.

Midwest League West Semifinals: Cedar Rapids 2, Quad Cities 1

Series tied 1-1.

The Kernels forced a deciding game three by scoring in more innings than the Banditos did on Thursday.

Alex McKenna's RBI single in the 5th was Quad Cities' only scoring play and one of just three hits on the night that the Banditos could muster up. Trey Dawson, who scored on the play, and Ramiro Rodriguez had the other two hits.

Brett Daniels pitched well but the lack of run support resulted in him taking the L. In 6.1 innings, Daniels allowed two runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out ten. Felipe Tejada finished the game and struck out five over 2.2 perfect innings.

Matt Ruppenthal will be on the mound for the third and final game of this series. He'll face Josh Winder at 6:35.

Let's play two in Lowell!

Round Rock 6, San Antonio 1

W- Brandon Bielak (11-4)
L- Trey Supak (1-2)

RR home runs: Kyle Tucker (34, solo in 2nd)

The Express took three of four from the Missions, giving them a three-game lead heading into the final series of the regular season.

Brandon Bielak allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out six over six shutout innings. Josh James walked one and struck out three in two innings and the Missions spoiled the shutout with a solo homer off Cionel Pérez in the 9th. Cionel allowed one other hit, walked one, and struck out one.

Kyle Tucker got things started by launching a homer to lead off the 2nd. They loaded the bases with one out in the 4th and got three runs out of it: Ronnie Dawson got plunked to bring in Nick Tanielu and then Chas McCormick hit a sac fly and Myles Straw legged out an RBI bunt single. Taylor Jones ripped an RBI double in the 8th and he wound up scoring on a wild pitch. Straw, Tucker, and Tanielu all finished with two hits on the night.

Round Rock will wrap up the 2019 regular season with four games in Omaha. Rogelio Armenteros will start game one and he'll take on Jake Kalish at 7:05.

S- Sam Delaplane (4)

CC home runs: Colton Shaver (21, 2-run in 3rd), Jake Adams (21, 2-run in 5th)

The Hooks were eliminated from playoff contention with this loss.

Colton Shaver opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st and then he launched a two-run homer in the 3rd. Jacob Meyers hit an RBI single in the 5th but got picked off after Shaver drew a walk. Jake Adams had to settle for a two-run home run instead. Unfortunately, the Travs finished on a 5-0 run, scoring in each of the last four innings.

Shaver reached in all four of his plate appearances, going 2-2 with a couple of walks and scoring twice. Adams also finished with two hits on the night.

Brett Adcock pitched four innings and allowed three runs on four hits (two solo homers), walked one, and struck out four. Nick Hernandez was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and he went two innings, allowing two runs on three hits and walking one. Fayetteville 5, Carolina 0

W- Cody Deason (9-6)
L- Nelson Hernandez (11-10)

Fayetteville will conclude the regular season with a five-game set against their divisional-round opponents, the Down East Wood Ducks. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 3, Cedar Rapids 2

W- Jonathan BermĂșdez (6-3)
L- Tyler Palm (3-10)
S- Felipe Tejada (1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos scored three in the 1st and that was all for them on offense. Fortunately, those three runs held up in the end and they came out on top in their penultimate road game of the 2019 regular season.

Oscar Campos and FreĂșdis Nova hit RBI singles and Alex Holderbach drove in the third run with a groundout. Alex McKenna finished 2-4 on the evening.

Jonathan BermĂșdez allowed two runs on a pair of solo homers, one other hit, and struck out seven in six innings. Felipe Tejada finished things off with three scoreless, allowing a hit, walking three, and striking out four.

Happy Blogiversary!

Tri-City sweep!

Round Rock 20, El Paso 12

W- Brendan McCurry (3-1)
L- Robbie Erlin (0-1)

RR home runs: Kyle Tucker 2 (30; 2-run in 1st, 2-run in 6th), Alex De Goti 2 (13; solo in 2nd, 3-run in 5th)

32 runs, 38 hits, eight home runs... just another night in Triple-A.

Everyone in Round Rock's lineup recorded at least one hit. Alex De Goti hit for the cycle; he and Kyle Tucker launched two home runs. The E-Train scored in every inning.

José Urquidy didn't have much fun on the mound but fortunately, the offense and the bullpen picked him up. Brendan McCurry was the first man out of the Express bullpen and he walked three and struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings. Brad Peacock threw a 1-2-3 7th inning and Ralph Garza Jr. allowed a solo homer and struck out three over the final two innings.

Kent Emanuel will take on Jerry Keel in game two of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Mountain.

Frisco 5, Corpus Christi 2

W- Tyler Phillips (5-8)
L- Brett Adcock (1-8)
S- DeMarcus Evans (4)

CC home runs: Osvaldo Duarte (12, solo in 1st)

The Hooks were held to just two hits as they dropped this series in the Metroplex.

Osvaldo Duarte scored both of Corpus Christi's runs in this game; he whacked a solo homer in the 1st and scored on an error that allowed Colton Shaver to reach in the 6th inning.

Brett Adcock went 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on four hits (solo homer), walked two, and struck out three. Carlos Sanabria was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and he struck out four in 2.1 innings; one of his strikeout victims struck out on a ball in the dirt and managed to reach base safely. Colin McKee and Andre Scrubb pitched two scoreless innings apiece; McKee walked two and struck out two and Scrubb walked one and struck out three.

Brandon Bailey gets the start for Corpus in the opener of a four-game series in Midland. He'll face Kyle Friedrichs at 7:00.

Fayetteville 13, Wilmington 5

W- Luis Garcia (8-4)
L- Jonathan Bowlan (5-3)

Fayetteville home runs: Miguelangel Sierra (10, 2-run in 2nd)

The Woodpeckers blew this game wide open with nine runs in the 8th. Wilmington responded with three runs in the 9th but the 11-run cushion proved to be comfortable enough.

Luis Garcia turned in a fine outing as he allowed just two hits, walked three, and struck out ten over six shutout innings; the ten punchouts tie a career-high. Joey Gonzalez went two innings and he allowed two runs on three hits, walked one, and struck out three. Riley Cabral got the 9th and allowed two hits, one of which was a three-run homer, walked one, and struck out the side.

Miguelangel Sierra opened the scoring in the 2nd by whacking a two-run homer. Fayetteville got two more in the 3rd on a pair of RBI singles from Michael Papierski and Scott Manea. The real fun began in the 8th.

Cal Stevenson and Papierski walked to lead off the inning and then Fayetteville got three consecutive RBI singles from Ross Adolph, Chandler Taylor, and Manea. Sierra added an RBI double to his ledger and then David Hensley and Scott Schreiber followed with RBI singles. Hensley and Schreiber both advanced on a passed ball and Stevenson drew another walk to load the bases for Papierski, who hit an RBI single. Schreiber scored when Adolph beat a double play attempt and Stevenson capped off the inning by scoring on a wild pitch.

Stevenson was the only player in the Woodpeckers' lineup to go hitless, but he did score twice in the 8th. In fact, everyone in the lineup scored a run. Manea finished 3-4 on the night while Sierra and Schreiber both finished 2-4 with two runs scored.

J.P. France will go up against Kris Bubic in the series finale. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 4, Clinton 3

W- Luis de Paula (1-1)
L- Josh Roberson (1-3)
S- Lupe Chavez (2)

QC home runs: Wilyer Abreu (2, 3-run in 2nd)

The Banditos, doing business as the Quad Cities Treasure Hunters on Tuesday, staved off a comeback attempt from the LumberKings to take the opener of this series.

Wilyer Abreu launched a three-run homer in the 2nd to open the scoring and Oscar Campos ripped an RBI double in the 4th. Campos finished 2-3 on the night.

Felipe Tejada walked one and struck out three over three scoreless innings. Luis de Paula was the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen and he allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out four in two scoreless innings. Lupe Chavez got the last four innings and he allowed three runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out six.

The Banditos and LumberKings will continue their series at 6:35 as Jonathan BermĂșdez takes on Remey Reed.

Tri-City 3, Lowell 2

W- Shea Barry (2-1)
L- Kris Jackson (2-3)

TC home runs: None.

The Spinners scored twice in the 8th to take the lead... only for the ValleyCats to walk off with the win in the bottom of the 9th. That's now six straight victories for Tri-City.

Peyton Battenfield and Derek West started things off with three scoreless innings apiece. Battenfield allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out three; West also allowed a hit and walked one and also struck out five. Hunter Brown tagged in for two innings and he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three. Shea Barry allowed a hit in a scoreless 9th.

Yeuris Ramirez reached on an error in the 7th which allowed C.J. Stubbs to score the game's first run. Nate Perry drew a walk with one out in the 9th and Juan Ramirez came on to pinch-run for him. Juan advanced to second on a wild pitch and Stubbs joined him on the bases after drawing a walk. Luis Santana grounded into a force out and just narrowly beat a game-ending double play. Yeuris tied the game with an RBI single and Santana scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Tri-City will now start a new series with Hudson Valley and they'll kick it off with a doubleheader starting at 5:05 Eastern. This is to make up a game that was originally scheduled for July 6.

W- Dario Peralta (2-2)

Getting to Know Quad Cities RHP Felipe Tejada

When I was in Tri-City last season, I couldn't help but notice RHP Felipe Tejada. There was a lot of down time because of rain delays during that trip and Tejada filled the void with his larger than life personality. I joked that I could follow him around all day with a camera.

Felipe Tejada - July 2018

This season Tejada has stood out for me for a different reason. In 15 appearances (six starts) for the Quad Cities River Bandits, Tejada is 6-0 with a 2.25 ERA, a 1.150 WHIP and has held opposing hitters to a .184 batting average. He has walked 30 and struck out 68 in 60 innings of work.

Felipe Tejada - July 2019

The 21-year old Tejada was signed by the Astros out of the Dominican Republic in September 2014 and Quad Cities Pitching Coach Erick Abreu (formerly a coach in the DSL) has seen him from the start, "I've had Tejada for the last four years. Another kid that came a long way from the Dominican Republic. He's such a hard worker. He got strong. He improved his velo. He added his sidearm slider and two-seam. He competes really well. Big heart out there. Really good kid too. He is very positive always. Always trying to help his teammates. Always trying to get better."

One of the keys to Tejada's great season is his vast pitch repertoire. Quad Cities Manager Ray Hernandez said of Tejada, "Tejada's been really good. He's put a few (good games) together now. He can do everything." Hernandez joked, "He's got 15 pitches he can go through from three different arm slots. No, he's got two arm slots. He's got a lot of pitches, got a lot of things he can do to right handed hitters and left handed hitters. He's developed really well with Abreu."

I also asked Quad Cities catcher Cesar Salazar to weigh in with what he thought of Tejada. He told me, "He throws a bunch of pitches. He has a full, full arsenal of pitches. He has two arm angles and he pretty much masters both arm angles. He can throw strikes from both of them and he can throw all five pitches for strikes. And he's not afraid to throw them in any count. I think that works a lot in his favor. He has a lot of confidence in his pitches and he likes to attack the strike zone a lot. I think the ability for him to throw all five pitches in any count, that makes him so good."

Now, on to the interview ...

Thank you for your time, Felipe, and best of luck as your season continues!!

Jeremy Molero and Edinson Batista threw three innings apiece to start off; Molero allowed two runs, both of which were inherited runners that scored and were charged to him, a hit, walked four, and struck out five. Batista allowed a run of his own on two hits, walked two, and struck out three.
