I plan to use "this space" to feature players who are currently flying below the radar, but who deserve a look.

SS Yohander Martinez, a 17-year old from Venezuela who signed with the Astros as an international free agent on July 2, 2018, is just getting started in his professional career and he is making quite a statement early on. Through his first 22 games with the DSL Astros, Martinez is hitting .366/.516/.465/.981 with three doubles, two triples, nine RBI, 12 stolen bases (five caught stealing) and 18 walks to nine strikeouts. Yes, it is a fairly small sample size, but I will definitely be keeping an eye on Mr. Martinez as he moves up the ladder! Watch this space ...

FORMER ASTRO UPDATE

Ryan Thompson - August 2017

RHP Ryan Thompson was drafted by the Astros in the 23rd round in 2014 out of Campbell University (former home of the High A Buies Creek Astros) and was claimed by the Rays in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft in December 2018. Thompson had been rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and hadn't pitched in a game since September 2017 when the Rays selected him. Thompson's comeback from surgery has started out well; in his first eight appearances (primarily out of the bullpen), he has a 2.03 ERA and a 1.050 WHIP between the Rays High A and AA teams. He has issued only one walk while striking out 16 in 13.1 innings of work.

Happy Hall of Fame Induction Day!

Omaha 5, Fresno 2

Fresno home runs: J.D. Davis (4, 25 season; 2-run in 4th)

Although David Martinez managed to shake off a 4-run 1st from Omaha, the Grizzlies offense was held in check on Sunday.

Martinez went 5 innings and allowed those 4 runs on 5 hits, one of which was a 3-run homer, walked 1, and struck out 3. Brendan McCurry was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 in 1.2 innings. Dayan Diaz retired all 4 Omaha hitters he faced, striking out 3 of them.

J.D. Davis smacked a 2-run homer in the 4th for the Grizzlies' only scoring play of the afternoon. The other two Fresno hits were doubles from Teoscar Hernandez and Reid Brignac.

Trent Thornton will take the mound for game 3, and he'll face Eric Skoglund. First pitch is at 7:05.

Midland 8, Corpus Christi 1

W- Grant Holmes (8-10)
L- Akeem Bostick (4-4, 6-5 season)

CC home runs: None.

The Hounds put this game out of reach with 2 in the 7th and 4 more in the 8th.

Tony Nuñez hit an RBI infield single in the 5th to drive in the only Corpus run. Drew Ferguson went 2-4 to account for half of the Hooks' hits in this game.

Akeem Bostick went 3.1 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Ryan Thompson came on to get Bostick out of a bases-loaded jam in the 4th and ultimately threw 2.2 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 6. Riley Ferrell was next, and he allowed 5 runs (4 earned, 3 inherited runners charged to him) on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3 in 1.2 innings. Andrew Thome pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed a run on a grand slam and walked 1. The other three runs were charged to Ferrell.

The Hooks will now begin a 3-game series in San Antonio. Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer Brock Dykxhoorn will take on Brett Kennedy in game 1, which starts at 7:05.

Down East 6, Buies Creek 5

L- Carlos Sierra (1-1, 1-2 season)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros scored 5 in the top of the 7th to take a lead... only to see the Wood Ducks tie the game in the bottom of the inning and go ahead with a run in the 8th that proved to be the difference.

Hector Perez went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 6, and struck out 3. Ryan Hartman allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and struck out 2 in 1.2 innings, and Carlos Sierra allowed a run on 2 hits and issued a walk in his 1.1 innings of work.

Buies Creek loaded the bases to begin the 7th and got their 5 runs out of it. Yordan Alvarez put them on the board with a 2-run single. Jake Rogers followed with a sac fly. After a Taylor Jones single, Anthony Hermelyn ripped an RBI double to send Alvarez home. Jones scored on a Randy César sac fly. Jones, Hermelyn, César, and Anibal Sierra all finished with 2 hits on the day.

Matt Bower will start the first of a 3-game series in Wilmington. First pitch is at 6:35 Eastern.

Quad Cities 10, Kane County 9

QC home runs: Abraham Toro-Hernandez (3, 9 season; solo in 3rd), Ronnie Dawson (13, 3-run in 6th)

The Banditos got on the board in this series by successfully erasing a 5-run deficit.

Quad Cities opened things up with 3 in the opening half-inning. Ronnie Dawson tripled to start the game and scored the first run of the day on a Chuckie Robinson single. Abraham Toro-Hernandez added a sac fly and Kristian Trompiz drove in a run with a bloop single. Toro smacked a solo homer in the 3rd inning.

Trompiz and Ray Henderson singled to start the 6th. Trompiz advanced on a flyout, and then Dawson got Quad Cities back in the game with a 3-run homer. Toro added an RBI single to his ledger to cut the deficit to one run. Dawson walked to lead off the 8th and scored the tying run on another single from Robinson. Troy Sieber walked to load the bases for Toro, who flew out, but Chas McCormick hit a sac fly that turned into an inning-ending double play to put the Banditos in front.

Robinson (2 RBI, R) and Trompiz (RBI) both finished with 3 hits on the day, while Dawson (3B, 3-R HR, 3 R), Toro (solo HR, 3 RBI), and Henderson all had 2 hits apiece.

Ronel Blanco went 4 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits, walked 5, and struck out 4. Robert Corniel allowed 4 runs on 5 hits and walked 4 in 2.2 innings. He got 2 outs to start the 7th but walked the bases loaded, which prompted Salvador Montaño's entrance. Montaño got Corniel out of the jam and finished off the game, allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 2 in 2.1 innings.

J.J. Matijevic ripped an RBI double in the 4th to put Tri-City on the board. Colton Shaver went 2-4 with an RBI single in the 6th.

Gilberto Celestino smacked a solo homer in the 1st to open the scoring, which was as good as it got for Greeneville in this game. After that, it was all Burlington.

Hansel Paulino went 3 innings and allowed 9 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits and struck out 7. Cole Watts was the first man out of the bullpen and in his 4 innings, he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Dariel Aquino allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and walked 1 in the 8th.

Felipe Tejada will start game 2 and he'll take on Sal Biasi at 7:00 Eastern.

Finally... J.B. Bukauskas, the Astros' 1st-round pick back in June, made his pro debut in the GCL on Sunday, allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 2 in a scoreless 1st inning against the Nationals. The game was suspended heading into the 2nd inning due to rain; the Astros were leading 1-0 when play was halted.

The Grizzlies stormed out to a 10-2 lead after 5 innings and cruised to a victory on Monday.

Colin Moran got things started with a 2-run single in the 1st inning. A.J. Reed added a sac fly later in the inning. Tyler White saw his 11-game hitting streak come to an end on Sunday, but he wasted little time getting back on track with another multi-hit game. White launched a 2-run homer in the 2nd inning. Moran struck again in the 4th with a 3-run blast, and Max Stassi smacked a 2-run homer in the 5th.

White (2-R HR, 3 R), Preston Tucker (2B, 2 R), Moran (3-R HR, 5 RBI), and Teoscar Hernandez (R) all finished with 2 hits on the evening. Tony Kemp finished 4-5 with a stolen base (12) and scored twice.

The 2 runs that David Martinez allowed in his 6 innings of work came on a homer hit by Carlos Asuaje in the 2nd inning. Martinez allowed 5 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Brian Holmes pitched the last 3 innings, struck out 2, and the two hits he allowed were solo homers to Jabari Blash and Ryan Schimpf.

Kyle Smith makes his second AAA start at 7:05 as the Grizzlies assume their Tacos alter ego in the series finale.

Corpus Christi 3, San Antonio 2

Yoanys Quiala had a solid Texas League debut and emerged as the winner.

Quiala went 6 innings and the only blemish on an otherwise fine night was a 2-run homer hit by Jose Rondon in the 6th. He also allowed 3 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 8. Ryan Thompson allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 in 2 innings, and Andrew Thome struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th to earn the save.

Kyle Tucker opened the scoring with a solo shot in the 1st inning. Jason Martin went 2-4 and drove in the other 2 Corpus runs with a 3rd-inning RBI single and a solo blast in the 5th.

The Hooks and Missions continue their series at 7:05 as Josh James faces Brett Kennedy.

Buies Creek is off until Thursday

The Carolina League All-Star Game will take place at 7:05 Eastern in Salem, Virginia. Buies Creek will begin the second half with 4 games in Winston-Salem on Thursday.

The Carolina Stros will be represented by Nick Hernandez, Franklin Perez, and Myles Straw. Yoanys Quiala was also selected to the South Division All-Star team, but he was just promoted to Corpus Christi.

Quad Cities is off until Thursday

The Midwest League All-Star Game will take place at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan, home of the Great Lakes Loons. The River Bandits will be represented by Yordan Alvarez, Enoli Paredes (who is currently on the DL), Carson LaRue, Chuckie Robinson, and Marcos Almonte. First pitch is at 7:05 Eastern.

Quad Cities kicks off the second half of their season with a 4-game series against Cedar Rapids beginning on Thursday.

Tri-City and Connecticut was postponed

Due to rain. This game will be made up on June 28 as part of a doubleheader.

DSL Astros Blue 4, DSL Athletics 3 in 11 innings

The A's tied the game with a pair in the 8th, but the Blue team got the last word in with a run in the top of the 11th and escaped two bases-loaded jams in both extra frames to come away with the win.

Leonardo Rodriguez and Anthony Rodriguez both scored on an error in the 5th that allowed Yeuris Ramirez to reach. Yorbin Ceuta hit an RBI single in the 6th.

The complex leagues are experimenting with international rules in extra innings, which means that each team has a runner at 2nd base to start each extra inning. Kendy Moya was put on 2nd to start the 11th and he ended up scoring the decisive run on a wild pitch. Ronaldo Urdaneta finished 3-5 with 2 stolen bases (6) and scored a run.

Fabricio Reina went 4 innings and allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. Renny Ugarte was the first man out of the Blue team bullpen and threw 3 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out 2. Yeremi Ceballos allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in the 8th, and Christopher Javier walked 3 (2 intentionally) and struck out 1 over 3 scoreless.

Both of Javier's free passes came in the 10th and loaded the bases. He kept the game tied. Intentionally loading the bases isn't a very sane thing to do... but it worked out for the Blue team. Javier had to work out of another bases-loaded predicament in the 11th despite getting two outs; a batter reached on a fielder's choice and then he plunked the next two guys. Again though, he found an escape and got that last out.

DSL Rangers1 14, DSL Astros Orange 10 in 10 innings

W- Felipe Ontiveros (1-0)
L- Fredy Medina (1-1)

Orange home runs: None.

The Rangers 1 got 4 in the 7th to tie and busted this one open with 6 in the first extra frame.

Jose Alvarez singled with one out in the 3rd inning. He advanced to 3rd on a couple of wild pitches and scored the first run of the day on a misfired pickoff throw. Renaigel Martis, who was at the plate while all of that unfolded, ended up walking. He then stole 2nd when Deury Carrasco struck out on what was ruled to be a wild pitch and scored on the errant throw down to 2nd. Carrasco advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and Freudis Nova drew a walk. They both scored on a Ramiro Rodriguez triple, and Jose Carrillo brought Rodriguez home with a sac fly.

In the 5th, Carrillo added an RBI double to his ledger and scored on an error that allowed Euclides Chavez to reach and advance to 3rd. Martis hit an infield single in the 6th and Jeury Castillo scored on the ensuing error. Alvarez finished 3-4 with 2 runs scored. Both of Carrillo's hits were doubles.

Cristofer Melendez allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4 in 4 innings. Mauricio Santana pitched 2+ innings and had an inherited runner charged to him. He allowed a hit, walked 4, and struck out 3. Jervic Chavez went 2 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and walked 1. Fredy Medina pitched 1.2 innings and was charged with all 6 Rangers runs (1 inherited runner also charged to him) in the 10th; all them were unearned. He allowed 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Ronny Garcia issued a bases-loaded walk to the first man he faced, but struck out Rougned Odor for the final out of the 10th.

The Grizzlies went off on Matt Cain by scoring 5 runs in the 3rd inning.

Evan Grills was excellent in his 6.2 innings; he allowed 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 8. Mac Williamson spoiled the shutout with a 2-run homer off of Jordan Jankowski in the 8th. Jankowski allowed 2 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 1.1 innings, and Jandel Gustave walked 2 in a scoreless 9th.

Andrew Aplin led off the big 3rd inning with a double, advanced to 3rd on a bunt single from Nolan Fontana, and scored the first run of the night on a Tyler White single. Jon Kemmer smacked an RBI double, and although White was thrown out at home when Alejandro Garcia grounded into a fielder's choice, Colin Moran was able to come through with an RBI single, and Garcia scored on an error that allowed Jon Singleton to reach. Max Stassi brought in the 5th and final run of the inning with an RBI single. Moran, who finished 3-4, led off the 5th with a homer for the final Fresno run. White went 2-5 out of the leadoff spot.

Rogelio Armenteros shined on the mound once again, and he and Ryan Thompson shackled the Missions offense. Meanwhile, the difference in this game was a 4-run 4th inning in the Hooks' favor.

Armenteros went 6 innings, and the one run he allowed came off a solo homer hit by Luis Tejada to begin the 5th. He allowed 5 other hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. Thompson walked 1 and struck out 1 over the final 3 innings.

Nick Tanielu led off the 4th with a double and scored the first run of the night when Preston Tucker followed with a single. Tucker wound up scoring on an error that allowed Conrad Gregor to reach. Drew Ferguson and James Ramsay drove in runs with a single and a groundout, respectively. Ferguson hit a one-out double in the 6th and advanced to 3rd on an error. Ramsay brought him home with a sac fly. Tucker and Ferguson had 2 hits apiece.

Aaron Mizell doubled in the 1st and put Lancaster on the board first by scoring on a passed ball. Jason Martin smacked a solo homer with two outs in the 2nd inning. Both teams scored 2 runs in the 4th; Jamie Ritchie smoked an RBI double and Osvaldo Duarte had a sac fly for the JetHawks. Trent Woodward scored on a botched force out attempt in the 8th, and Bryan Muñiz scored on a wild pitch in the 9th. Muñiz, Woodward, and Ritchie all had 2 hits on the night.

Albert Abreu went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, walked 4, and struck out 4. Ralph Garza Jr. was the first man out of the Lancaster bullpen; he went 3 innings and allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Chris Murphy allowed 3 runs on 4 hits in the 8th.

Yoanys Quiala went 7 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 4. Zac Person walked 2 and struck out 3 over 1.2 scoreless innings, and David Schmidt got a groudout to record the final out of the 9th inning.

The Grizzlies ended their longest roadtrip of the season on a positive note, staving off a rally from the Chihuahuas to earn a split in the series.

Brady Rodgers went 6 innings and allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 5. Chris Cotton was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen; he allowed a run on a groundout, a triple, and struck out 1 in the 7th inning. Albert Minnis recorded 2 outs in the 8th; he allowed a run on a sac fly, 2 hits, and struck out 1. Brendan McCurry pitched the final 1.1 innings to get the save; he allowed a run on a sac fly, 3 hits, and struck out 3.

Fresno scored 2 runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and the 4th innings. Their 2 in the 2nd came courtesy of a Teoscar Hernandez double. Max Stassi drew a bases-loaded walk and Jon Singleton added a sac fly in the 3rd, and in the 4th, Teoscar scored on an error, and D.J. Fisher hit an RBI single. Fisher hit another RBI single in the 6th, and one batter later, Jon Kemmer launched a 3-run home run that effectively turned out to be the difference in this game.

Kemmer (2B, 3-R HR) and Nolan Fontana (2 R, SB) finished with 3 hits apiece, while Fisher (2 RBI, R) and Teoscar (2B, 2 RBI, R) both finished 2-5.

The Grizzlies have today off; they'll start a 4-game series with the Iowa Cubs on Friday.

The Hooks drew even in the series thanks to a 4-run 2nd inning and 3.1 scoreless innings from the bullpen.

Kent Emanuel went 5.2 innings and allowed 4 runs on 9 hits and struck out 1. Kevin Comer allowed 2 hits and fanned 2 over 2.1 scoreless, and Ryan Thompson worked around a hit to close out the game.

James Ramsay opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 2nd. They weren't done just yet; Chase McDonald and Alejandro Garcia followed with singles to load the bases, and Mott Hyde promptly cleared them with a double. Hyde got thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple, but the damage was done. Garrett Stubbs drew a bases-loaded walk in the 4th. Hyde went 2-3 with the big double, while Garcia finished 3-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Yulieski Gurriel went 1-4; he started at third base and played 7 innings.

Drew Ferguson opened the scoring with an RBI infield single in the 1st inning. Jamie Ritchie hit a single in the 6th, and an error on the play allowed Aaron Mizell to score. Bobby Boyd, who scored the first run of the evening, had a double, which was Lancaster's only extra-base hit of the night.

Rogelio Armenteros went 6.2 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 7. Ryan Deemes allowed a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings.

The series finale is at 7:05 Pacific. Lancaster's starter is TBA; whoever he is, he'll take on Jake Jewell.

Carlos Sanabria tagged in for 3.2 innings and allowed 2 runs, both of which scored on a home run. He allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 4. Lucas Williams threw a 1-2-3 9th inning,

Stijn van der Meer hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning. Frankeny Fernandez scored on an error in the 6th, and Oscar Campos scored on a wild pitch in the 9th.

Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (7, 2-run in 1st)

The Grizz took the first game of the twinbill as Brady Rodgers dominated the Isotopes in game 1.

Rodgers allowed just one hit and struck out 8 over 6 shutout frames. Albuquerque spoiled the shutout by scoring 2 runs off Kevin Chapman in the 7th. Chapman allowed 2 hits and walked 1.

A.J. Reed put Fresno on the board first with a 2-run homer in the 1st. Colin Moran hit an RBI single in the 3rd and scored when Andrew Aplin grounded into a force out in the 6th inning. Later in the 6th, Andrew Aplin stole 2nd (10) and Preston Tucker scored on the errant throw down. Danny Worth drove in the Grizzlies' final run of game 1 with an RBI single. Aplin and Worth both finished 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Jon Singleton also went 2-4 and scored a run.

Game 2: Fresno 4, Albuquerque 3

Fresno home runs: Preston Tucker (2, solo in 1st)

Fresno earned the doubleheader sweep as Jordan Jankowski and James Hoyt held off the Isotopes.

Mike Hauschild went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits and struck out 7. Jankowski worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 6th, and Hoyt struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th to record his PCL-leading 11th save of the season.

Preston Tucker opened the scoring in game 2 with a solo homer in the 1st. The Grizz added 3 more in the 2nd with a Tyler Heineman RBI single and a 2-run single from Eury Perez. Tucker and Heineman both finished 3-3, while Matt Duffy finished 2-3 with a double and a run scored.

Tommy Shirley will start the final game of this series. He'll face Jeff Hoffman at 7:05 Mountain.

The Hooks got the sweep thanks to two outstanding performances on the mound from two Tommy John survivors.

David Paulino allowed 1 hit, walked 1, and struck out 7 over 5 shutout innings. Kent Emanuel finished off the 1-hitter by striking out 5 over 4 perfect innings.

Chase McDonald put Corpus on the board first with an RBI single in the 1st. The other 3 Hooks runs came in the 5th on a pair of RBI singles from D.J. Fisher and J.D. Davis. Alex Bregman also scored thanks to an errant throw down to 2nd as Fisher stole his 7th base of the season. Davis, James Ramsay (2B), and Teoscar Hernandez (R) all had 2 hits on the night; all 4 of Corpus Christi's runs in this game were scored by the top third of the order, which was Teoscar, Bregman, and Fisher.

Tonight, the Hooks are in Springdale, Arkansas to begin the second leg of their tour of Arkansas. Francis Martes will start the first of 3 against Northwest Arkansas. He'll go up against Matt Strahm at 7:05.

Lancaster 9, Inland Empire 1

The JetHawks have dominated the 66ers in this series, outscoring them 15-2 in the first two games.

Trent Thornton went 6 innings and allowed a run on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. Ryan Thompson finished it off by striking out 4 over 3 perfect innings.

Lancaster jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind two home runs. Aaron Mizell whacked a 3-run homer in the 2nd, and Garrett Stubbs smacked a 2-run blast in the 3rd. Johnny Sewald hit an RBI double in the 7th and came around to score on a Tony Nuñez single. Nuñez moved to 3rd on a Jamie Ritchie single and scored on a wild pitch. Brooks Marlow capped off the scoring with an RBI single. Mizell finished a triple shy of the cycle and was the only player on either side to record a multi-hit game.

Scott Weathersby will be on the mound for Lancaster as they look for the sweep. He will take on Jason Hoppe at 7:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 4, Clinton 3

The Banditos edged the LumberKings and avoided the series sweep by breaking a 3-3 tie in the 9th inning.

Connor Goedert opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st. Clinton scored 1 in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th to take the lead, but Quad Cities re-took the lead in the 6th on a pair of sac flies from Bobby Wernes and Osvaldo Duarte. Clinton scored another run after stretch time to tie the game at 3, and that's where it stood heading into the 9th.

Duarte doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt from Myles Straw. Kristian Trompiz came up and came through with what turned out to be the game-winning hit, an RBI single that gave Quad Cities a 4-3 lead. Trompiz (RBI, R) and Kyle Tucker (2B) both finished 3-5. They accounted for two-thirds of the River Bandits' hits in this game.

Jose Luis Hernandez and Elieser Hernandez (no relation; they are from different countries) both pitched 4 innings. Jose Luis allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and struck out 7. Elieser got the win, allowing a run on 5 hits, walking 2, and striking out 2. Ralph Garza Jr. pitched a 1-2-3 9th to get the save.

The River Bandits will begin their penultimate homestand of the first half this weekend. Tonight, they will welcome the Burlington Bees to Modern Woodmen Park for a 3-game series beginning at 7. Chris Murphy will start for Quad Cities, and his opponent will be Jaime Barria.
