Getting to Know Astros/Hooks RHP Akeem Bostick

Akeem Bostick's 6'6" frame and his smooth baritone voice immediately set him apart. But it was his presence on the mound last Saturday in his first AA appearance that had fans and scouts alike taking note. Despite allowing a lead off home run to Frisco's Scott Heineman, Bostick also impressed Pitching Coach Dave Borkowski, "I thought it was a great first impression. He gives up that first home run to lead off the game. You like how he reacted after that. He continued to pound the zone, continued to be efficient, used all his pitches. It was nice to see."

Bostick has a very robust pitch repertoire, featuring a 4-seam fastball, 2-seam fastball, cutter, slider and curveball. He even mixes in the occasional changeup and splitter. But it is his mid 90's fastball and his cutter that he likes best. And he definitely throws them all for strikes. In his first five appearances this season, Bostick threw almost 65% of his pitches for strikes.

Bostick, a barely 22-year old righty who came into the Astros system from the Rangers in the January 2015 Carlos Corporan trade, was finally able to break through the High A ceiling after spending parts of the prior two seasons with High A Lancaster. This season Bostick made a statement in his first four appearances with the Astros current High A affiliate in Buies Creek by going 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA and a 0.828 WHIP.

Lancaster, located in California's High Desert, is not the most conducive of environments for a young pitcher, but Bostick took it in stride. "Out there in Lancaster, I felt like I played pretty solid for the most part. I had a couple of rough games in the two seasons that I played there, but for the most part I think I played well. The way the ball carries out there is ridiculous. Numbers look kind of off, but mentally I know I pitched pretty well," said Bostick.

And, although the environment at Buies Creek is much more welcoming for pitchers than Lancaster, the atmosphere is still a little different, particularly since the Astros will only reside at the Campbell University stadium for two seasons while the new Fayetteville, NC venue is being constructed. I asked Bostick about the atmosphere there, "Out there, we don't have many fans. It's right there on the college campus so college students will come. You'll have others that work around there .. they'll come out there. But for the most part, it's not too big of a fan base, but the guys that actually do come, you can hear them in the stands."

So Bostick's AA debut was a long time in coming. He made the most of it, and not just by collecting the win. "Last night, it was a little overwhelming just being promoted to AA for the first time and having a packed house like it was last night. But really, I was more happy that I got to beat my former teammates, guys that I played with when I was over with the Rangers. That was pretty fun," said Bostick.

When quizzed about his season thus far, Bostick told me, "It just goes back to executing pitches. I think I've been able to command my pitches very well, make the pitches necessary to get quick outs." As far as what he'll need to improve upon, he said, "Really just focusing right now on all my pitches coming out of the same tunnel, out of the hand so that hitters can't recognize it as early. Sometimes I get open and I want to throw my curveball from behind me and it's just a big loopy one, and other times I get out in front, same tunnel and it's got good bite to it."

I had one final question for Bostick. What would 2017 Bostick tell 2013 Bostick, freshly drafted out of West Florence High School in Florence, SC in the second round. "Just keep working, man. Right now I feel like I'm pretty close. Just keep the same mentality. Just keep on focusing on executing my pitches. I think I'll get there in no time."

Unfortunately, Bostick was pulled from his next appearance for the Hooks this past Friday with an injury (after throwing only 17 pitches), possibly a "hand issue," that landed him on the 7-day DL. I'm hoping for his swift return to the rotation and his chance to beat many more of his former Rangers teammates in the coming months and years to follow.

Results for Sunday, May 7, 2017

Colorado Springs 7, Fresno 3

W- Brandon Woodruff (5-0)
L- Edison Frias (1-3)

Fresno home runs: Preston Tucker (6, solo in 8th)

The Grizzlies were done in by a couple of big innings from the Sky Sox offense and a lackluster offensive showing on their end.

Fresno didn't get on the board until the 8th when Jon Kemmer hit a sac fly and Preston Tucker launched a solo homer. Jack Mayfield finished 3-4 with a couple of doubles; he led off the 8th with one and scored on Kemmer's sac fly and drove in a run with the second double in the 9th inning. D.J. Fisher singled to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Reid Brignac finished 2-4.

Edison Frias and Brian Holmes both pitched 4 innings with dramatically different results. Frias allowed 7 runs on 9 hits (2 solos and a 2-run homer), walked 3, and struck out 3. On the other hand, Holmes allowed a hit, walked 2, struck out 5, and kept Colorado Springs off the scoreboard.

Francis Martes returns after getting his last start skipped. He'll face Josh Hader at 6:40 Mountain.

San Antonio 7, Corpus Christi 1

W- Kyle Lloyd (3-3)
L- Josh James (2-1)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks dropped their sixth straight to fall to .500. They were in this same situation last year and managed to right the ship and win the first half.

Mott Hyde opened the scoring with an RBI infield single in the 2nd. Unfortunately, that was Corpus Christi's only scoring play of the afternoon.

Josh James went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Riley Ferrell was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1 in the 5th. Michael Freeman pitched 2.1 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Jacob Dorris struck out 3 over 1.2 perfect innings.

The series continues at 7:05 as Rogelio Armenteros faces Barry Enright.

Buies Creek 12, Myrtle Beach 6

W- Matt Bower (2-0)
L- Ryan Kellogg (1-2)

BC home runs: Jason Martin 3 (5; solo in 1st, 3-run in 2nd, solo in 4th), Kyle Tucker 2 (8; solo in 2nd, 2-run in 6th), Anibal Sierra (1, 3-run in 1st), Pat Porter (3, solo in 6th)

Sunday Funday for Buies Creek as they lit up Myrtle Beach's pitchers to the tune of seven home runs. All 12 of their runs scored on those big flies.

Jason Martin wasted little time in getting things started as he sent one out to start the game. Later in the 1st, Anibal Sierra whacked a 3-run homer. Martin launched a 3-run homer in the 2nd to give him two in as many innings. Kyle Tucker followed by cranking a solo shot later in the frame. Martin led off the 4th inning with his 3rd homer of the day, his second solo blast. Little Tuck turned in a second consecutive multi-homer game when he smacked a 2-run homer in the 6th. Pat Porter followed up that dinger by clubbing a solo homer. Porter and Martin both finished with 3 hits on the day. Tucker and Dex McCall both finished 2-4 at the plate.

Matt Bower allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 5 innings. Ryan Deemes and Nick Hernandez pitched 2 innings apiece out of the bullpen. Deemes allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and fanned 4, while Hernandez struck out one over a pair of spotless frames.

Buies Creek has Monday off. They'll return to action on Tuesday to start a 3-game series with the Salem Red Sox. Framber Valdez will face Dedgar Jimenez at 7:00 Eastern.

Lake County 3, Quad Cities 1

W- Tanner Tully (1-1)
L- Ryan Hartman (3-1)
S- Ryder Ryan (1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos' bats were silenced in the series finale. Both teams scored a run in the 5th inning, but the Captains quickly broke the tie with a couple of runs in the 6th.

Taylor Jones' sac fly in the 5th was Quad Cities' only scoring play. Stephen Wrenn, who scored that run, went 2-3 with a double.

Ryan Hartman went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 5 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Lucas Williams didn't allow any runs that were charged to him in his 3 innings of work, but he allowed the two runners he inherited from Hartman to score in the 6th. Williams also allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Kevin Hill worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 2.

The River Bandits will be on the road this week to take on a couple of Eastern Division clubs. Their first stop is Bowling Green, Kentucky, where they'll begin a 3-game set with the Hot Rods at 6:35. Enoli Paredes will start game 1.

Swept.

Colorado Springs 19, Fresno 7

W- Tim Dillard (1-0)
L- Mike Hauschild (0-1)

Fresno home runs: Jon Kemmer (3, solo in 1st)

This game was surely one to forget for the Fresno Grizzlies. Once again, they lost a series opener.

Mike Hauschild and Keegan Yuhl both had tough nights on the mound, and I think I'll leave it at that. Sean Stutzman allowed 2 runs on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 in 2.1 innings. Aaron West allowed a hit and fanned 2 over 1.1 scoreless, and Andrew Aplin worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 8th.

Jon Kemmer opened the scoring by whacking a solo homer in the 1st inning. This would be the Grizzlies' last scoring play until the 5th; in the meantime, the Sky Sox scored 18 unanswered.

Max Stassi walked to lead off the 5th. Aplin doubled, and Jack Mayfield drove them in with a double. Mayfield came around to score on a single from Derek Fisher. A.J. Reed walked to lead off the 6th and Stassi drove him in with a double. Stassi advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on an Aplin single. Aplin eventually scored on a Tony Kemp groundout.

Stassi and Aplin both went 2-3; both of Stassi's hits were doubles. Fisher and Kemmer finished 2-5; Fisher extended his hit streak to 11 games.

Edison Frias will take on Brandon Woodruff in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 1:30 Mountain.

San Antonio 3, Corpus Christi 2

W- Brett Kennedy (2-1)
L- Kent Emanuel (1-2)
S- Trey Wingenter (1)

CC home runs: Tyler Wolfe (1, 2-run in 8th)

A two-run homer jolted the Hooks back to life but they couldn't push across the tying run in the 9th and dropped their fifth in a row.

Tyler Wolfe was the one who smacked a 2-run homer in the 8th that put Corpus on the board and suddenly made this a one-run game. Garrett Stubbs drew a walk in the bottom of the 9th and managed to advance to 2nd, but he was stranded there to end the game. Drew Ferguson went 2-4 with a double.

Kent Emanuel went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs (all in the 4th) on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Dean Deetz turned in 4 scoreless frames, allowing 2 hits, walking 3, and fanning 4.

Josh James starts game 2 of this series. He'll face Kyle Lloyd at 2:05.

Myrtle Beach 8, Buies Creek 4

W- Oscar de la Cruz (2-2)
L- Justin Ferrell (2-2)
S- Kyle Miller (1)

BC home runs: Kyle Tucker 2 (6; solo in 4th, solo in 9th), Christian Correa (1, solo in 8th)

A big inning from the Pelicans doomed the Carolina Stros for the second straight contest.

Kyle Tucker launched a pair of solo shots to turn in the first multi-homer game of his career. Christian Correa smacked a solo homer of his own in the 8th inning. After Little Tuck's second homer in the 9th, Ryne Birk drew a one-out walk and scored on a double from Pat Porter. Tucker and Porter both finished 2-4 on the evening.

Justin Ferrell went 4.1 innings and allowed 4 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Ralph Garza Jr. got the final two outs of the 5th, one via strikeout, but both of the runners he inherited from Ferrell scored on a 3-run homer that he served up to Eddy Martinez. Garza also allowed a 2-run homer to Matt Rose in that 5th inning for Myrtle Beach. Alex Winkelman allowed an unearned run, 2 hits, and struck out 6 in 3 innings; the run scored on a force out in the 6th.

Matt Bower will take on Ryan Kellogg in the series finale. First pitch is at 3:05 Eastern.

Lake County 13, Quad Cities 3

W- Justin Garza (1-0)
L- Forrest Whitley (1-1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos fell behind 10-0 after 3.5 innings and Forrest Whitley hit the first speed bump of his young career.

Whitley did strike out the side in each of the two innings that he worked, but he got tagged for 4 runs on 5 hits (3-run homer) in the 1st inning. Reggie Johnson was the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen and allowed 5 runs on 4 hits while walking 2 in the 3rd inning. Jorge Alcala allowed a run in the 4th, his first inning of work, but he managed to stop the bleeding. Alcala ended up going 4.2 innings and also allowed 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. Salvador Montaño recorded the last 4 outs, all via strikeout. He also allowed 3 runs (all of which came in the 9th) on 4 hits and walked 1.

All three Quad Cities runs came in the 4th inning: Randy César ripped a 2-run double and came around to score on a single from Rodrigo Ayarza. Stephen Wrenn finished 3-4 with a pair of doubles while Ayarza finished 2-4.

Ryan Hartman gets the start as the River Bandits and Captains wrap up their series at 1:15. He'll be opposed by Juan Hillman.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Friday, May 5, 2017

Fresno 5, Sacramento 1

W- Trent Thornton (1-0, 2-2 season)
L- Dan Slania (0-4)

Fresno home runs: Preston Tucker (5, 2-run in 5th)

The Grizzlies earned the split behind a strong outing from Trent Thornton, who won his first AAA start.

Thornton allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 over 6 shutout frames. Tyson Perez, Ashur Tolliver, and Jordan Jankowski each pitched an inning out of the bullpen. The RiverCats spoiled the shutout with a run off of Perez in the 7th, which came on a sac fly. Perez also allowed a single and walked 1. Tolliver retired the side in order in the 8th inning, striking out 1. Jankowski worked around a couple of singles to finish off the game, striking out 2.

D.J. Fisher singled to lead off the 2nd and scored the first run of the night on a Tyler White double. A.J. Reed clubbed a ground-rule double to lead off the 4th and scored on Juan Centeno's sac fly, and Preston Tucker launched a 2-run homer in the 5th. Fisher and White both finished 3-4; Fisher now has a 10-game hit streak. Reed and Centeno had two hits apiece.

Tonight, Fresno starts a 4-game series in Colorado Springs. Mike Hauschild will be on the mound in game 1 and he'll go up against Paolo Espino at 6:00 Mountain.

Midland 10, Corpus Christi 4

W- Kyle Friedrichs (1-3)
L- Akeem Bostick (0-1, 3-2 season)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks were swept out of Midland as the wheels fell off on their bullpen.

Kyle Smith allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3 in 5 innings of work. Akeem Bostick came out for the 6th, but he allowed 2 hits, issued a walk, and only recorded one out before a hand issue forced him out of the game. Eric Peterson came on and allowed all of Bostick's runners to score. Peterson ultimately pitched 2 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) of his own on 7 hits. Andrew Thome got the last two outs of the 8th; the runner that he inherited from Peterson scored on a groundout.

Jon Singleton opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 1st. In the 4th, Alejandro Garcia lashed a 2-run double, and Tony Nuñez smacked an RBI triple in the 5th. Nuñez went 2-3 and was the only player in the Corpus Christi lineup with a multi-hit outing. Garrett Stubbs only had one plate appearance and didn't complete it because he got tossed from the game in the opening frame.

Kent Emanuel will be on the mound as the Hooks begin the latest iteration of the I-37 Series against San Antonio. He'll face Brett Kennedy at 7:05.

Myrtle Beach 4, Buies Creek 2

W- Dillon Maples (4-0)
L- Elieser Hernandez (2-3)
S- Craig Brooks (2)

BC home runs: Ryne Birk (2, solo in 2nd)

The difference in this game was a 3-run 3rd inning in the Pelicans' favor.  The Astros couldn't capitalize on a bases-loaded, no out situation in the 7th inning.

Ryne Birk smacked a solo homer in the 2nd to put Buies Creek on the board first. Jason Martin scored the other run after Anthony Hermelyn grounded into a force out in the 6th inning. Myles Straw finished 2-4 with a double.

Elieser Hernandez went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 4 hits (solo homer), walked 3, and struck out 6. Carlos Sierra pitched the final 3 innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5; one of the two runners he inherited from Hernandez scored after he threw a wild pitch.

In game 3, Justin Ferrell will face Oscar De La Cruz. First pitch is at 7:05 Eastern.

Quad Cities 6, Lake County 2

W- Cionel Perez (1-1)
L- Brady Aiken (0-5)

QC home runs: None.

Cionel Perez rebounded from a rough debut and came out with a win for the first time in his American baseball career.

Cionel allowed just 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 over 5.2 shutout innings. Lake County spoiled the shutout with a pair of solo shots off Abdiel Saldaña in the 7th. Those were the only two runs that Saldaña allowed in his 2.1 innings of work; he allowed one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 3. Erasmo Pinales walked 1 and struck out the side in the 9th.

Marcos Almonte doubled to lead off the 2nd and scored the first run of the evening on a wild pitch from Brady Aiken. Randy César ripped a 2-run double in the 3rd. Spencer Johnson lashed a 2-run double of his own in the 6th and scored the last Quad Cities run on a Carmen Benedetti sac fly. Almonte went 2-4 with 2 runs scored and was the only player on either side to finish with more than one hit.

Forrest Whitley takes the mound in game 2 of this series. He'll take on... someone else. Shane Bieber is listed as the probable starter on MiLB.com, but he was just promoted. First pitch is at 6:35.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Thursday, May 4, 2017

Sacramento 4, Fresno 2

W- Kraig Sitton (2-0)
L- David Martinez (0-4)
S- Ryan Webb (2)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies made it interesting with a run in the 9th, but their comeback bid fell short.

D.J. Fisher went 2-4 with a double and put Fresno on the board with an RBI groundout in the 5th inning. Jon Kemmer also finished 2-4 with a double; his two-bagger came in the 9th and he came around to score on a Juan Centeno single. Tony Kemp went 2-4 as well.

David Martinez allowed 3 runs on 7 hits (2-run homer), walked 3, and struck out 4 in 5 innings of work. Kevin Comer was the first man out of the bullpen; the RiverCats executed a double steal in the 7th and got an unearned run off of him after Centeno's errant throw down to 2nd. Comer also allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 3. Reymin Guduan allowed 2 hits and struck out 1 over 1.1 scoreless, and Sean Stutzman worked around a hit and a couple of walks to throw a scoreless 9th.

These two California rivals will wrap up their series tonight at 7:05 Pacific. Trent Thornton will get the start tonight and he'll be opposed by Dan Slania.

Midland 5, Corpus Christi 2

W- Cody Stull (2-1)
L- Cy Sneed (1-2)
S- Joel Seddon (1)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks dropped the series out in Midland.

Bobby Boyd put Corpus on the board by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the 2nd inning. Mott Hyde scored the Hooks' other run in the 4th following a balk. Tony Nuñez and Alejandro Garcia had 2 hits apiece.

Cy Sneed went 4 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 4, and struck out 8. Carlos Hiraldo was summoned from extended spring training to fill a vacant roster spot in Corpus and acquitted himself well in his first appearance outside of the Rookie leagues, allowing a run on 7 hits and striking out 2 in 3.1 innings of work. All but one of the hits that Hiraldo allowed were singles. Andrew Thome got the final two outs of the 8th, walking 1 and striking out 1.

The Hooks will look to avoid the sweep as Kyle Smith gets the start. He'll face Ben Bracewell at 7:00.

Buies Creek 9, Myrtle Beach 4

W- Hector Perez (1-0, 2-1 season)
L- Thomas Hatch (0-3)

BC home runs: None.

The Buies Creek Astros only scored in one inning... but it was good enough for them to take game 1 in Myrtle Beach.

In his first Carolina League start, Hector Perez went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. Sebastian Kessay was the first man out of the Astros bullpen and threw 3 scoreless, allowing a hit and striking out 4. Nick Hernandez struck out the side in order in the 9th.

Buies Creek sent 14 men to the plate in a 9-run 4th inning. Myles Straw kicked it off with a single. Jason Martin and Dex McCall both walked to load the bases. Pat Porter went down on strikes, but Anibal Sierra reached on an error that allowed Straw to score the Astros' first run. Osvaldo Duarte put BC in front with an RBI single. The last 7 runs all came with 2 outs in the inning; Christian Correa struck out and the Pelicans made a pitching change soon after. The move panned out... for Buies Creek.

Arturo Michelena and Johnny Sewald both drew bases-loaded walks. Duarte scored on a wild pitch, and Straw hit an RBI single in his second plate appearance of the frame. Martin drew another walk to re-load the bases for McCall, who cleared them with a double. Straw went 3-5 and was the only player in the Astros lineup with a multi-hit game.

Elieser Hernandez will take on Justin Steele in game 2. First pitch is at 7:05 Eastern.

Quad Cities 11, Fort Wayne 3

W- Brett Adcock (1-0)
L- Jerry Keel (1-2)

QC home runs: Marcos Almonte 2 (5; 2-run in 4th, grand slam in 5th), Alex De Goti (3, 2-run in 5th)

The Banditos took the series from the TinCaps behind a show of force on the mound and at the plate.

Brett Adcock was stellar on the mound, allowing just one run on 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out a career-high 11 in 6 innings of work. Salvador Montaño pitched the 7th and allowed 2 runs, walked 5, and struck out 1. One run scored on a bases-loaded BB and the other scored on a sac fly. Lucas Williams allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 5 over the final 2 innings.

While Adcock dominated on the mound, Marcos Almonte terrorized the TinCaps on offense: he launched a 2-run homer to put Quad Cities on the board and in the lead in the 4th inning. Alex De Goti clubbed a 2-run homer of his own in the 5th to open up the floodgates. Jake Rogers, Randy César, and Chuckie Robinson all drew walks to load the bases for Almonte, who promptly cleared them with a grand slam.

Taylor Jones got plunked to open the 6th and Rodrigo Ayarza followed by ripping a double. De Goti walked to load the bases for Rogers, who hit a sac fly. César followed with an RBI single; an error on the play allowed De Goti to advance to 3rd. Robinson drove in the Banditos' final run of the evening by lacing an RBI single.

Almonte (2 HR, 6 RBI) and Rogers (2B, RBI, 2 R) both finished with 2 hits apiece. Rodrigo Ayarza finished 3-4 with a double, 2 runs scored, and a stolen base (1) out of the bottom of the order.

Quad Cities welcomes the Lake County Captains to Modern Woodmen Park for the weekend. Cionel Perez will start game 1 and he'll face Brady Aiken at 6:35. Yes, that is the same Brady Aiken who was drafted #1 overall by the Astros in 2014.
