Fresno home runs: Jake Marisnick (3, 2-run in 4th)

The Tacos busted this game open with a four-run 3rd inning, it was #JakeDay in the Central Valley, and Josh James racked up the strikeouts once again.

James, however, had to settle for a bare minimum quality start after the Rivercats got to him for three runs in the 6th. He allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out a dozen in probably the most dominant bare minimum quality start I've heard of. Ken Giles, Dean Deetz, and Buddy Boshers all turned in scoreless innings. Giles, in his first AAA appearance since 2014, allowed two hits and fanned two in the 7th. Sacramento loaded the bases on Deetz in the 8th with a couple of hits and a walk, but he got out of it unscathed, striking out two in the process. Boshers struck out two in a 1-2-3 9th.

Jake doubled with one out in the 3rd and scored on a D.J. Fisher single. Taylor Jones legged out an infield single and J.D. Davis walked to load the bases for Yordan Alvarez, who came through with a two-run single. Jack Mayfield followed with an RBI double. Tony Nuñez walked to start the 4th and one batter later, Marisnick launched a homer. Fisher singled and eventually scored on a base hit from Davis. Mayfield scored Fresno's final run in the 5th on an error after Nuñez flied out.

Jake finished 3-5 on the evening, a triple shy of the cycle. Fisher, Jones, Davis, and Mayfield all finished with two hits in the contest.

Cy Sneed will face Casey Kelly in game three of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 4, Frisco 3

CC home runs: Stephen Wrenn (7, 2-run in 5th)

Frisco broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the 9th... only to see the Hooks walk off with the win in the bottom of the 9th.

Jorge Alcala turned in the longest outing of his career. He threw eight innings and the two runs he allowed came on a homer, which was the only extra-base hit that he allowed all night. Alcala allowed five other hits, walked one, and struck out eight. Ralph Garza Jr. allowed an unearned run on a sac fly, a single, and struck out one in the 9th.

Both teams hit two-run homers in the 5th; Stephen Wrenn was responsible and his blast in the bottom half tied the game. The Hooks loaded the bases to start the 9th by drawing three walks, one intentionally. Wrenn, who led off the inning, scored the tying run on a sac fly from Chas McCormick. Alex De Goti got plunked to re-load the bases for Eduardo de Oleo, who won it by legging out an infield single that scored Josh Rojas. De Goti finished 3-4 with a double and de Oleo finished 2-5 with the winning base hit. Wrenn scored twice and stole two bases, which gives him 32 thefts on the year.

Hector Perez will make his first Texas League start in the series finale. He'll face Brett Martin at 7:05.

Buies Creek was off

The Carolina Stros will start a three-game series with Salem tonight at 6:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities was off

Parker Mushinski will start the first of a three-game series against South Bend at 6:35. He will be opposed by Erling Moreno.

Brooklyn 5, Tri-City 0

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats were kept off the scoreboard to begin a new series.

Tri-City's only extra-base hit in this game was a double from Alex Holderbach.

Mark Moclair allowed two runs on two hits, walked two, and struck out four in 1.2 innings. Shawn Dubin was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen and had the longest outing as he allowed a run on four hits and struck out two in 2.1 innings of work. Brett Conine and Hansel Paulino both threw two innings. Conine allowed a run on two hits and struck out three, while Paulino was the only ValleyCats pitcher who turned in a scoreless outing; he allowed a hit and fanned two. Riley Cabral allowed a run on three hits and struck out one in the 9th.

Tri-City gets back to it at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 4, GCL Nationals 3

GCL home runs: Deury Carrasco (1, solo in 6th)

The Palm Beach Stros scored twice in the 8th to snatch a win from their complex mates.

David Paulino went three innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, walked one, and struck out two. Jayson Schroeder, the Astros' second-round pick in last month's draft, made his pro debut and worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 4th. Layne Henderson allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out two in three scoreless, and Miguel Figueroa allowed a couple of hits and struck out one over two scoreless innings.

Sean Mendoza went 2-4 and scored the GCL squad's first run of the day on a Carlos Diaz groundout in the 5th inning. Deury Carrasco smacked a solo homer in the 6th, giving him the first home run of his career. Carrasco tied the game with an RBI triple in the 8th and scored the go-ahead run on Mendoza's single. Carrasco and Yorbin Ceuta also finished with two hits on the afternoon.

DSL Astros 2, DSL Red Sox1 1

The Academy only had two hits on the day... but they scored more runs, so they got the win.

Their two runs came on an error that allowed Jeury Castillo and Javier Bermúdez to score in the 2nd inning.

Valente Bellozo allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out two over five shutout innings and Alfredi Jimenez allowed an unearned run on four hits and fanned five over the last four innings.

Fresno home runs: Jack Mayfield (6, 20 season; solo in 6th)

The Isotopes seized the momentum with a 5-run 8th to break a 2-2 tie.

Preston Tucker opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 1st inning, while Jack Mayfield launched a solo homer in the 6th that tied the game at 2. The Grizzlies could only get one run back following that big 8th inning from Albuquerque as Garrett Stubbs scored on a Rico Noel groundout in the 9th. Stubbs hit a couple of doubles in his 4 at-bats.

Kent Emanuel went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Jacob Dorris was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen; he walked 1 and struck out 2 over 2 scoreless innings. Dayan Diaz bore the brunt of the Albuquerque assault in the 8th as he allowed the 5 runs on 6 hits; he also issued a walk and struck out 1.

Fresno will begin a 4-game series with Las Vegas at 7:05 Pacific. Cy Sneed makes his AAA debut on the final Taco Tuesday of the 2017 season and he'll take on Donovan Hand.

Corpus Christi was off

Cionel Perez makes his Texas League debut as the Hooks start a 3-game series in Tulsa at 7:05.

Lynchburg 3, Buies Creek 2

The Carolina Stros got nipped towards the end as the Hillcats scored a run in the bottom of the 8th after Buies Creek had tied the game at 2 with a run in the top of the 8th.

Yordan Alvarez went 2-3 and drove in both Buies Creek runs with a sac fly in the 1st and an RBI single in the 8th. Myles Straw (R, 2 SB), Randy César, and Carmen Benedetti also finished with 2 hits on the evening. Straw now has 35 stolen bases this season.

Matt Bower went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 7. Erasmo Pinales threw 2 innings and allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

Elieser Hernandez goes up against Brock Hartson, a Pearland native, in game 2 of this series. First pitch is at 6:35 Eastern.

The Banditos snapped a little 3-game slide thanks to a solid night on the mound.

Kit Scheetz won his Midwest League debut with 6 strong innings; he allowed a run on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Lucas Williams allowed a hit, walked 2, and struck out 1 over 2 scoreless, and Devon Carr struck out the side in order to get the save.

Daz Cameron opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning. Chas McCormick legged out a bunt single in the 4th and Luis Payano followed by ripping a double. Marcos Almonte sent them both home with a double of his own. Payano went 2-4 and smacked a solo homer in the 6th for the final run of the evening.

Cristian Javier starts game 2. First pitch is at 6:35.

Tri-City is on its All-Star break

The 2017 New York-Penn League All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday; Tri-City will be hosting the event at Joe Bruno Stadium. The ValleyCats will be represented by Hunter Martin, Andy Piñeda, J.J. Matijevic, and Reggie Johnson. Martin replaced Nathan Thompson, who was just promoted to Quad Cities.

Kingsport 6, Greeneville 1

When a baseball team has more errors than base hits or runs (or both, even), they usually don't win very many games.

Gilberto Celestino walked to lead off the 3rd and scored the Appy Astros' only run on an error that allowed Patrick Mathis to reach.

Gerardo Bojorquez went 3 innings and allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 2. Jheyson Caraballo was the first man out of the Greeneville bullpen and allowed an unearned run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3 in 5 innings. Juan Corniel allowed a hit and struck out 1 in a scoreless 9th.

Hansel Paulino goes up against Joe Cavallaro in the series finale. First pitch is at 11:30 AM Eastern.

GCL Nationals 7, GCL Astros 3

GCL home runs: Eduardo de Oleo (1, 6 season; 2-run in 8th)

Eduardo de Oleo was the Palm Beach Stros' offense in this game. He went 2-4 with an RBI single in the 6th and whacked a 2-run homer in the 8th. César Cortez also went 2-4 and scored a run.

Angel Heredia made his 2017 debut, allowing 2 hits and striking out 1 in a scoreless 1st. Freylin Garcia made his U.S. debut and went 4 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits, walking 3, and striking out 2. Saul Martinez went 3.2 innings and allowed 2 runs; both were inherited runners that were charged to him. He also allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Chauncey Nuñez got the last out of the 9th with a strikeout, but in addition to allowing both of the runners he inherited from Martinez to score, he allowed an unearned run and 2 hits.

Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (13, solo in 9th)

Make it 9 wins in a row for the Grizzlies as Dean Deetz, Aaron West, and Brendan McCurry joined forces to shut the RiverCats down on the first day of July.

Deetz went 5 innings and allowed Sacramento's only run of the evening, which came on a solo homer hit by Chris Shaw in the 4th. He allowed one other hit, walked 3, and struck out 6. West and McCurry followed with 2 scoreless innings apiece; West allowed 3 hits, while McCurry allowed 2 hits and fanned 3.

Fresno parlayed a base-loaded situation in the 2nd inning into the first two runs of the evening. Colin Moran led off the inning with a single, walked his way to 3rd, and scored when Juan Centeno beat out a double play attempt. A.J. Reed, who walked, ended up scoring on a wild pitch. Reed added an RBI single to his ledger in the 3rd inning. D.J. Fisher hit an RBI single in the 4th and Tony Kemp also ended up scoring on the ensuing error. The Grizz got a pair of RBI singles in the 5th from Centeno and Kemp, and Reed capped off the evening with a homer to start the 9th inning.

Kemp (RBI, R, SB), Moran (2 R), and Reed (solo HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) turned in 2-hit performances for the Fresno offense. Jon Kemmer reached in all 5 of his plate appearances, going 3-3 with a double, a run scored, and walked twice.

David Martinez gets the call in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 1:05 Pacific.

Northwest Arkansas 6, Corpus Christi 3

The Hooks managed to get to within a run after the 7th inning, but the Naturals scored a pair in the 8th to put this one away and earn the sweep. Corpus went 2-11 with RISP and left 10 men on base.

Jon Singleton put the Hooks on the board with an RBI single in the 6th inning and Tony Nuñez chipped in with a 2-run single in the 7th. J.D. Davis, Jamie Ritchie, and Ramon Laureano all finished with 2 hits on the night.

Alex Winkelman went 3.2 innings and allowed 3 unearned runs on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Akeem Bostick tagged in for 3.1 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 1. Andrew Thome allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and struck out 1 in the 8th.

The Hooks are hoping that the second leg of their tour of Arkansas ends up a little better than the first leg. Charlie Morton joins Corpus as he continues his rehab, and he'll start the first of a 3-game set in Little Rock at 2:10 against Tyler Herb.

Buies Creek 7, Potomac 1

The Carolina Stros broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the 6th and busted this game open with four more after the 7th inning stretch.

Hector Perez went 5.2 innings and allowed a run on 8 hits (7 singles and a double), walked 2, and struck out 9. Sebastian Kessay allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 over 2 scoreless, and Sean Stutzman retired the last 4 Nationals hitters of the game, striking out 2.

Eduardo de Oleo opened the scoring by launching a solo homer in the 2nd inning. Anibal Sierra walked to lead off the 6th and ended up scoring the go-ahead run on an error following a Myles Straw sac bunt. Straw, who made it all the way to 3rd, scored on a Yordan Alvarez double.

Taylor Jones kicked off the 7th with his first Carolina League homer. De Oleo and Randy César followed with a single and a walk, respectively. They advanced a base on a wild pitch. Sierra walked to load the bases for Straw, who hit an RBI single. Stephen Wrenn followed with an RBI single and Alvarez added a sac fly to his ledger. Alvarez (2B, 2 RBI) and de Oleo (solo HR, 2 R) both finished with 2 hits on the evening.

Jorge Alcala faces Grant Borne in game 3. First pitch is at 2:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 5, Burlington 3

W- Abdiel Saldaña (4-1)
L- Andrew Vinson (5-7)

QC home runs: None.

It got a bit hairy in the 9th, but the Banditos secured the win to get even in their series with the Bees.

Abdiel Saldaña's first start of the season went well: he threw 7 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. Devon Carr allowed a 2-run homer to John Schuneckt in the 9th, which was the only scoring play he allowed in 2 innings. Carr also allowed one other hit and struck out 2.

Quad Cities took the advantage with 3 runs in the 5th. Jonathan Arauz hit a one-out double and scored the first run of the frame on Ronnie Dawson's single. Carmen Benedetti followed with a single and Chuckie Robinson ripped a 2-run double. Robinson was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple to end the inning, but he did the damage. Arauz finished 2-4 and added an RBI single to his ledger in the 6th. An error on the play also allowed Marcos Almonte to score.

Quad Cities and Burlington continue their series at 2:00 as Cionel Perez takes on Jose Suarez.

Staten Island 3, Tri-City 0

W- Alexander Vargas (2-0)
L- Patrick Sandoval (0-1, 0-2 season)
S- Eduardo Rivera (1)

TC home runs: None.

There was only one half-inning in which runs were scored. It belonged to Staten Island.

Patrick Sandoval went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs, all of which came in the 2nd inning, on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out a career-high 9. Parker Mushinski walked 1 and struck out 3 over 2 scoreless innings, and Hunter Martin struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th.

Tri-City was held to just 4 hits; J.J. Matijevic, Jake Adams, and Kristian Trompiz singled, and Abraham Toro had a double.

Game 2 of the series starts at 4:00 Eastern.

Greeneville and Kingsport was suspended

A 0-0 game was suspended due to rain. This game will resume at 4:00 Eastern.

The regularly scheduled game, a 7-inning affair, will start 30 minutes after the completion of the suspended game. Juan Robles will take on Garrison Bryant.

The Palm Beach Stros had more hits, but the Cardinals' two solo homers topped their one run.

Hector Martinez scored the GCLstros' only run of the day on a Jose Benjamin sac fly in the 9th. Carlos Machado finished 2-4 with a double in the 9th and was stranded there to end the game.

Tanner Duncan struck out 4 over 3 perfect innings. The one run that Maikel Sepulveda allowed came on a solo homer from Elehuris Montero in the 4th. Sepulveda went 4 innings and allowed 2 other hits and struck out 5. Juan Corniel struck out 1 and only allowed one hit in his 2 innings, which was a solo homer from Luis Flores in the 8th.

DSL Astros Blue 4, DSL Royals 0

Blue home runs: None.

Fredis Guerrero and Nivaldo Rodriguez joined forces on a shutout. Guerrero allowed 2 hits and struck out 4 in 5 innings, and Rodriguez allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1.

Angel Tejeda opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning. The Blue team got 2 in the 5th as Luis Coronel scored on a passed ball and Leonardo Gonzalez followed by scoring on a wild pitch with Nerio Rodriguez at the plate. Samir Caraballo hit a sac fly in the 7th.

DSL Pirates 12, DSL Astros Orange 3

L- Ronny Garcia (0-2)

Orange home runs: None.

The Pirates rattled off 12 unanswered runs after Team Orange scored 3 in the 2nd.

Euclides Chavez scored the first run of the day on an error in the 2nd inning; Jeury Castillo was credited with an RBI on the play. Sean Mendoza and Deury Carrasco followed with sac flies. Chavez went 2-4.

Elian Rodriguez made his pro debut and went 2.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits (2-run homer), walking 4, and striking out 3. Crisofer Melendez allowed a hit and walked 1 over 2.1 innings. Ronny Garcia and Fredy Medina struggled and I'll leave it at that.

Three days in a row!

Fresno 8, Las Vegas 5

Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (3, 3-run in 6th), Teoscar Hernandez (4, grand slam in 8th)

Fresno erased a 5-0 deficit by scoring the game's last eight runs. They entered this series on a 5-game losing streak but finished it by taking 3 of 4 from the 51s.

For the first five innings, the Grizz couldn't get much done against Adam Wilk until Tony Kemp and D.J. Fisher hit one-out singles in the 6th. Tyler White was the 2nd casualty of the inning on a lineout, but A.J. Reed put them on the board with a 3-run homer.

Kemp singled to lead off the 8th. and then White singled and Reed drew a walk to load the bases. Preston Tucker drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a one-run game and prompted a pitching change. Teoscar Hernandez greeted Paul Sewald (Johnny Sewald's brother) with a grand slam that put Fresno in front. Kemp (2 R) and Colin Moran (2B) had 2 hits apiece.

Brian Holmes went 4 innings and allowed 5 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 6 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 4. The bullpen picked him up and kept Vegas off the scoreboard for the final 5 innings. Well, technically, they allowed a run, but it was charged to Holmes.

Aaron West inherited two runners from Holmes in the 5th; one of them scored on a force out. Fortunately, he got out of the 5th without further incident, striking out 1. Sean Stutzman allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 over 2 innings. Reymin Guduan struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th, and Jordan Jankowski allowed a hit and issued a walk to the first two men he faced, but he pulled himself together to secure the victory. Jankowski induced a double play and got Xorge Carrillo to fly out to end the game.

Francis Martes gets the start as the Grizzlies welcome Salt Lake to town for a 4-game series. He'll face Manny Banuelos at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 8, Frisco 3

The Hooks responded to Frisco taking the lead with 3 runs in the 3rd with a pair of 3-run innings of their own.

Ramon Laureano opened the scoring with a 2-run single in the 3rd inning. The Riders responded with 3 in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, but fortunately, that was the only inning in which they scored.

Corpus regained the lead in the 5th by taking advantage of a bases-loaded, no out situation. Mott Hyde and Drew Ferguson singled to lead off the inning while Laureano joined them by drawing a walk. Jon Singleton was next and he came through with a 2-run single to put the Hooks back in front. Laureano stole home on a double steal with Singleton, who took 2nd. Singleton hit an RBI single in the 7th, and J.D. Davis capped off the evening with a 2-run homer. Davis has now homered in three consecutive games. Ferguson finished 2-4 with 3 runs scored and 2 stolen bases (4). Singleton (3 RBI, R, SB), Davis (2-R HR), and Alejandro Garcia (2 2B) also finished with 2 hits in the game. Garcia extended his hitting streak to 7 games; the last five have been multi-hit outings.

Josh James went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Rogelio Armenteros shut it down, allowing 3 hits, walking 2, and striking out 4 over the final four innings.

Buies Creek 9, Carolina 4

BC home runs: Eduardo de Oleo 3 (3; 3-run in 1st, solo in 3rd, solo in 8th)

Buies Creek stormed out to a 6-0 lead after the opening frame and Eduardo de Oleo had a night to remember.

De Oleo, who was acquired in the minor league phase of last winter's Rule 5 draft from the Diamondbacks, exceeded his home run total from 2016 and matched his total from 2015 in one night. All three of his hits left the yard.

Jason Martin led off the game with a double and scored the first run of the evening on a Myles Straw single. Straw made it to 3rd on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on Kyle Tucker's sacrifice fly. Dex McCall and Ryne Birk followed with singles. Osvaldo Duarte went down on strikes for the 2nd out, but Pat Porter kept the line moving with an RBI single. De Oleo was next, and he capped off the stellar start by slamming a 3-run homer. De Oleo wasn't finished; he led off the 3rd with a homer and did it again in the 8th. Birk drove in the final Astros run with an RBI single in the 9th inning. Kyle Tucker, who scored on Birk's base hit, singled and stole his way to 3rd before coming home. Little Tuck now has 6 stolen bases on the season. Straw and Birk both finished with 2 hits on the night.

Yoanys Quiala went 3.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out 4. Sebastian Kessay was the first man out of the Buies Creek bullpen and went 1.1 innings, allowing a hit, walking 2, and striking out 2. Framber Valdez tagged in for 3.2 innings; the one run he allowed came on a solo homer hit by Isan Diaz in the 9th. Framber allowed 3 other hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Carlos Sierra issued a walk to the first man he faced, but he got the final out with a strikeout.

Akeem Bostick gets the start in game 3 of this series. He'll face Conor Harber at 5:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 3, Clinton 1

The Banditos took game 2 thanks to the long ball and a couple of stellar performances on the mound.

Brett Adcock and Edgardo Sandoval combined to hold the LumberKings to just two hits in this one. Adcock allowed a run, both Clinton hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 in 4.2 innings, while Sandoval struck out 4 in 4.1 innings; he faced one batter over the minimum because of an error.

All three Quad Cities runs came via the home run. Spencer Johnson launched one in the 2nd to put the Banditos on the board first and Marcos Almonte clubbed his third in four games, a 2-run shot in the 5th.

Enoli Paredes will take on Ljay Newsome (yes, this is his given name) in game 3 of this series. First pitch is at 1:15.
