PCL Semifinals: Round Rock 10, Iowa 5

Round Rock wins series 3-2.

The E-Train overcame an early 3-0 deficit by putting up seven runs in the 3rd to seize control of this deciding game five.

Forrest Whitley went four innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits, walked five, and struck out six. Ryan Hartman took over for the final five innings of this one and allowed six hits, one of which was a solo homer, walked one, and struck out five.

Round Rock loaded the bases to lead off the top of the 3rd and that's how they went off for seven runs. Drew Ferguson got them on the board with a sac fly and then Jack Mayfield got plunked to re-load the bases. Taylor Jones went down on the infield fly rule, but Nick Tanielu kept things going with a two-run single to tie the game at 3 and Alex De Goti followed by launching a three-run home run to put the Express in front. Stephen Wrenn walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Jamie Ritchie.

Ferguson smacked a two-run homer in the 6th and McCormick capped off the afternoon with a solo blast in the 8th. Jones, McCormick, Ferguson, and Tanielu all finished with two hits on the day.

Round Rock will face Sacramento, the winner of the PCL's Pacific Conference in the PCL Championship Series which will begin on Tuesday in Sacramento.

Carolina League South Final: Fayetteville 6, Down East 3

Fayetteville wins series 3-2.

Fayetteville home runs: Chandler Taylor (1, solo in 6th)

The Woodpeckers swung this game in their favor after scoring four in the 7th to break a 1-1 tie.

Chandler Taylor tied the game when he homered to lead off the 6th. Like Round Rock did in the 3rd inning of their game, Fayetteville also capitalized on a bases-loaded situation to lead off an inning.

Miguelangel Sierra singled to lead off the 7th, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and made it to third on Jeremy Peña's single. Peña advanced to second on defensive indifference and Cal Stevenson walked to load 'em up for Marty Costes, who ripped a two-run double to put the Woodpeckers in front. Taylor was intentionally walked to re-load the bases for David Hensley, who immediately made the Wood Ducks regret that move by hitting a two-run single. Ruben Castro provided the cherry by ripping an RBI double in the 9th. Castro finished 3-4 on the day while Sierra, Costes, and Peña all went 2-4.

Shawn Dubin turned in an excellent performance in a crucial game as he allowed an unearned run on two hits, walked two, and struck out seven in six innings of work. The Wood Ducks tried to stir up some unrest but the Fayetteville bullpen kept themselves composed and closed out the series. César Rosado was the first man out of the Woodpeckers bullpen and he pitched 1.2 innings, allowing a two-run double, walking four, and striking out two. Riley Cabral got the final out of the 8th with a strikeout. Jacob Billingsley came on for the 9th but he walked the only two men he faced. Leovanny Rodriguez took ownership of the final inning and he worked around an error that loaded the bases to close things out, striking out two.

The Mills Cup, the Carolina League's Championship series, will begin Tuesday at 6:35 Eastern. Fayetteville will head up to Wilmington for game one.

The Express got held in check on Sunday to slow down their recent rampage.

Corbin Martin went three innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, walked two, and struck out three. Ronel Blanco was the first man out of the Round Rock bullpen and he allowed five hits, one of which was a two-run homer. Blanco also walked one and struck out three in his 2.2 innings of work. Ralph Garza Jr. allowed a hit and fanned four over the final 2.1 innings.

Kyle Tucker opened the scoring by whacking a solo home run in the 1st inning. Round Rock got two more in the opening frame thanks to a Drew Ferguson sac fly and a Nick Tanielu single. Taylor Jones ripped an RBI double in the 3rd and A.J. Reed led off the 9th with a homer that cut the Bees' lead to one run. Tucker, Jones, and Aníbal Sierra all finished with two hits on the afternoon.

Brandon Bielak will start the series finale and he'll take on Matt Sandoval at 1:05 Mountain.

Amarillo 6, Corpus Christi 0

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks, doing business as the Raspas like they do every Sunday, had nothing going for them on offense. As a result, they had to settle for the split and they couldn't take sole possession of first place in the Texas League South. All four teams are separated by one game.

Chas McCormick doubled and drew a couple of walks.

Brett Adcock went four innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits, walked one, and struck out two. Layne Henderson struck out one in a 1-2-3 5th, and Enoli Paredes threw four perfect innings in his Texas League debut, striking out five.

Corpus Christi has Monday off as they embark on their last roadtrip of the first half. The first leg begins on Tuesday with the opener of a three-game series against the Arkansas Travelers.

Wilmington 5, Fayetteville 3

Well, they didn't lose in walk-off fashion, but the Woodpeckers got burned by another late rally from the Blue Rocks. Wilmington scored three in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead in this one.

J.P. France allowed two runs on three hits, walked two, and struck out four in six innings of work. César Rosado threw a scoreless 7th but everything unraveled on him in the 8th as he only got one out and left the bases for Leovanny Rodríguez, who couldn't get him out of the predicament. Rosado allowed a hit, walked two, struck out two, and all three of the runners that Leovanny inherited were all charged to him. Leovanny got the last two outs of the 8th, one via strikeout, but not before he allowed a go-ahead bases-clearing double.

Fayetteville's three runs came via the solo homer. Bryan de la Cruz led off the game with one, Marty Costes smacked one in the 4th, and Michael Papierski went deep to lead off the 6th. Papierski, Costes, and Jonathan Arauz all finished 2-4.

The Woodpeckers will start a three-game set with Myrtle Beach at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 5, Kane County 3

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos' bats came alive after a rain delay. Also, Cedar Rapids' split in their doubleheader with Peoria resulted in the Banditos clinching a playoff berth. Their magic number to clinch the division is now down to two.

José Bravo pitched six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, walked four, and struck out five. Joey Gonzalez came on after play resumed and he shut the Cougars down, allowing two hits and striking out five over the final three innings.

Freúdis Nova ripped an RBI double in the 4th to put Quad Cities on the board. With two outs in the 7th, Jeremy Peña kept the inning alive by legging out an infield single. César Salazar got plunked and David Hensley legged out an infield single of his own to load the bases for Freúdis, who brought Peña in... by getting plunked. That prompted Kane County to make a pitching change and Michael Wielansky greeted new Cougars pitcher Wesley Rodriguez with a bases-clearing double that put the Banditos in the lead. Wielansky, Peña, and Hensley all finished with two hits on the evening.

The Banditos and Cougars will wrap up this series at 6:35.

The Astros' upper-level affiliates did battle with their counterparts from the A's system on Tuesday.

Las Vegas 19, Round Rock 9

Well... this probably wasn't the start to their roadtrip that the Express envisioned.

At least Yordan Alvarez homered. He now has 22 home runs on the season. Kyle Tucker also homered. Twice! He now has 18 home runs. Taylor Jones also hit a home run to give him 11 on the season. Alex De Goti finished 3-5, a home run shy of the cycle, and scored twice.

The pitchers got battered as they allowed all 19 runs in the first four innings. Ralph Garza Jr. brought some semblance of order as he struck out four over two perfect innings and Lorenzo Quintana worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 8th.

Akeem Bostick will face Parker Dunshee in game two. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Midland 4, Corpus Christi 2

The RockHounds scored three in the top of the 8th to snatch this game from the Hooks' grasp.

Corpus got their two runs in the 3rd on a pair of RBI singles from Abraham Toro and Seth Beer. Toro finished 2-4 on the evening.

Brandon Bailey allowed four hits and struck out two over five shutout innings. Unfortunately, the bullpen made a hash of things to finish out the game. Miguel Figueroa allowed a run on two hits in the 6th. Carlos Sanabria got 1.1 innings and he allowed three unearned runs (two inherited runners charged to him), a hit, walked two, and struck out two. Colin McKee allowed a hit and struck out one in 1.2 innings.

Carson LaRue will start the series finale and he'll take on Brian Howard at 6:15.

Winston-Salem 7, Fayetteville 5

Fayetteville home runs: Marty Costes (1, 3 season; 3-run in 1st)

The Woodpeckers fell behind 6-0 after one half-inning and they nearly managed to erase it before ultimately falling short. Four errors did not help their cause and as a result, they got swept.

They got three of those runs back in the bottom of the 1st when Marty Costes whacked his first Carolina League home run. Costes scored on a single from Scott Manea in the 6th. The Woodpeckers loaded the bases in the 9th but all they could get out of it was a Colton Shaver RBI walk. Costes finished 2-4 on the night.

J.P. France failed to get out of the first inning. He allowed five unearned runs on three hits, one of which was a grand slam, walked one, and the two outs he recorded both came via the strikeout. Tanner Duncan was the first man out of the Fayetteville bullpen and he allowed two runs on two hits (solo homer), walked one, and struck out three in 2.2 innings. Leovanny Rodríguez followed with three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. César Rosado allowed a hit and struck out four over the final 2.2 innings.

The Woodpeckers have Wednesday off as they head up to Wilmington, Delaware, where they'll start a four-game series with the Blue Rocks on Thursday.

Peoria 12, Quad Cities 5

The Banditos got out to a quick start but the Chiefs swiftly seized control of this game. This series is being played in Peoria because the flood waters are still hanging around Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities got three in the 1st on an RBI single from David Hensley and a two-run single from Michael Wielansky. Ross Adolph went 2-4 and smacked a two-run home run in the 6th inning.

José Bravo went three innings and allowed seven runs on six hits (two and three-run homers), walked two, and struck out one. Joey Gonzalez was the first man out of the Quad Cities bullpen and he allowed a run on a solo homer, one other hit, walked one, and struck out four in two innings. Jayson Schroeder was next and in 1.1 innings, he allowed two runs on two hits, walked three, and struck out two. Devin Conn allowed two runs on three hits, walked two, and struck out two in 2.2 innings.

Game two of this home series in the opponent's ballpark starts at 6:35.

There was only one scoring play in this game and it belonged to the DSL Astros.

Cristian Gonzalez went 2-4 and his two-run double in the 5th was that one scoring play.

Jeremy Molero allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out three over five shutout innings. Ricardo León completed the shutout with four perfect innings, striking out four.

These two teams will go at it again at 11:30 AM Atlantic.

San Antonio 11, Round Rock 6

Kyle Tucker has bounced back nicely from his rough start. Unfortunately, Forrest Whitley remains mired in his.

Whitley only lasted two innings and he allowed seven runs (one inherited runner charged to him) on six hits (solo and two-run homers), walked three, and struck out one. Akeem Bostick took over for 6.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits (two-run homer) and striking out five. Ronel Blanco recorded the final out of the 9th.

Jack Mayfield singled to lead off the 5th and one batter later, Tucker smacked a two-run homer to put Round Rock on the board. Drew Ferguson singled and Jamie Ritchie doubled in between two outs and Derek Fisher kept the inning alive with an RBI infield single that scored Ferguson. Ritchie wound up coming home on a wild pitch. Mayfield led off the 8th with a homer. Tucker followed with a single and he eventually scored on a groundout from Ferguson.

Kyle Tucker finished 3-3 on the evening and Mayfield went 2-4.

The Express and Missions will wrap up this series tonight at 7:05.

Corpus Christi 5, Frisco 4 (11 innings)

The Hooks, doing business as the Blue Ghosts this weekend, opened up this latest edition of the Lone Star Series in the Texas League by walking off with a victory.

Ronnie Dawson put Corpus on the board by ripping an RBI double and eventually scoring on a wild pitch in the 7th inning. After Frisco took the lead in the top of the 8th, the Blue Ghosts managed to push across the tying run in the bottom half of the 8th when Stephen Wrenn scored on another wild pitch. Neither team scored in the 9th or the 10th, so let's fast forward to the 11th.

The Roughriders scored in the top of the 11th to take the lead. Seth Beer led off the bottom of the 11th at second but Lorenzo Quintana entered the game to pinch-run for him. Granden Goetzman went down on strikes and Quintana advanced to third on Dawson's groundout. That left it all to Chas McCormick, who launched a 3-2 pitch from Locke St. John into the South Texas night to send everyone home happy. McCormick finished 2-3 on the night and Abraham Toro went 2-4 with a double and scored a run.

Brandon Bailey pitched six innings and allowed a run on three hits, walked two, and struck out four. Justin Ferrell tagged in for two innings and the one hit he allowed was a two-run homer to Juremi Profar that put Frisco in front. Ferrell also walked two and fanned two. Colin McKee was next and he went 2.1 innings, allowing an unearned run that was an inherited runner that was charged to him and striking out five. Carlos Sanabria got the last two outs of the 11th, one via strikeout, and also allowed an RBI single that saw the run get charged to McKee.

Carson LaRue will take on Edgar Arredondo in game two of this series. First pitch is at 7:15.

Winston-Salem 4, Fayetteville 3 (10 innings)

Fayetteville home runs: Jake Adams (8, solo in 6th)

For the second consecutive game, the Woodpeckers walked off with a 4-3 loss. This is the sixth time this season that they've walked off with a loss and the second time that they've walked off with a loss in back-to-back games.

Fayetteville got a pair of RBI doubles in the 1st from Jake Adams and Colton Shaver to open the scoring. Adams later whacked a solo homer in the 6th inning. He, Shaver, and Jonathan Arauz all finished with two hits on the night.

The one run that J.P. France allowed in his five innings of work came on a solo homer. France allowed one other hit, walked two, and struck out two. Jojanse Torres went 3.1 innings in his Carolina League debut and he allowed two runs on two hits, walked two, and struck out six. Winston-Salem scored the winning run off Nick Hernandez with a one-out infield single in the 10th, which was the only hit that he allowed. Hernandez, who also got the last two outs of the 9th, walked two and struck out two.

Chad Donato will start the first game of a weekend + Monday series in Lynchburg at 6:30 Eastern.

Quad Cities 6, Kane County 3 (10 innings)

The Banditos busted out for four runs in the first extra frame to take this game and the series.

José Bravo turned in a quality start as he allowed two runs on a homer, two other hits, and struck out five in six innings of work. Devin Conn and Humberto Castellanos both pitched two innings apiece out of the bullpen. Conn walked two and struck out five while Castellanos allowed an unearned run and fanned two.

Trey Dawson singled to lead off the 5th, moved to third on an error that allowed Ramiro Rodríguez to reach, and scored Quad Cities' first run of the game when Michael Wielansky struck out and reached base on a wild pitch. An errant pickoff throw later in the inning allowed Rodríguez to score. Let's fast-forward to the 10th.

Alex Holderbach led off the inning on the bases; he moved to third on Rodríguez's base hit and scored the go-ahead run on Wielansky's single. Ross Adolph went down on strikes but Austin Dennis ripped an RBI double to bring in Rodríguez. Marty Costes capped things off with a two-run triple. Costes went 2-5 and was the only player on either side to finish with more than one hit in the game.

The River Bandits will finally get another chance to play in their own ballpark as they begin a four-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at 6:35. R.J. Freure will take on Scotty Sunitsch in game one.

Nashville 8, Round Rock 6 in 12 innings

The Express blew a 5-1 lead as they ended up dropping four of five to the last-place team in the PCL's American Northern division. Nashville scored seven of their eight runs after the 7th inning and Tim Dillard got his second win of the series; he got the other win as a starter on Friday.

Round Rock's first five runs all came on home runs. Alex De Goti clubbed a three-run homer in the 3rd and then Jack Mayfield and Kyle Tucker led off the 4th with back-to-back solo homers. De Goti hit an RBI single in the 11th that tied the game at 6. Those three home runs were the only extra-base hits for the Express in this game. De Goti (3-R HR, 4 RBI), Myles Straw (SB), Tucker (solo HR), and Nick Tanielu (2 R) all finished with two hits in the game. Straw now has 15 stolen bases on the season.

Rogelio Armenteros went five innings and the one run he allowed came on a homer hit by Delino DeShields, one of just two hits that he surrendered during his start. Armenteros also walked three and struck out five. Kent Emanuel and Ralph Garza Jr. both pitched three innings with contrasting results. Emanuel allowed a run on four hits and fanned five, while Garza allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits (solo homer) and struck out two. Jamie Ritchie was summoned to pitch and he ended up taking the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out one in the 12th.

I believe that Ritchie was pitching because the Express had no one else available. Ronel Blanco and Reymin Guduan both pitched on Sunday. Akeem Bostick's last outing on Saturday came in relief and he's alternated between starting and relieving this season so I imagine that his next appearance will be as a starter. Cy Sneed could have been an option on three days' rest but if he's going to be getting work as a starter moving forward, that could have opened the Express to even more issues with their pitching staff. Brendan McCurry was placed on the IL before the game and Kit Scheetz was called up to Round Rock as a corresponding move but I don't know if he was actually available to pitch or if there were any logistical issues in getting Scheetz to Round Rock in time.

Brady Rodgers will start the first of a four-game series against San Antonio tonight at 7:05. He'll take on Thomas Jankins.

Corpus Christi 5, Amarillo 1

CC home runs: None.

No extra-base hits? No problem. Corpus Christi pounded out 13 singles and five of them resulted in runs. In fact, neither team recorded an extra-base hit in this game.

Brandon Bielak was excellent in his six innings as he allowed a run on a sac fly, two hits, walked one, and struck out nine. Carlos Sanabria allowed three hits and struck out four over two scoreless innings, and in his 2019 debut, Erasmo Pinales allowed a hit and struck out two in the 9th.

Seth Beer and Ronnie Dawson opened the scoring with RBI singles in the 1st inning. Abraham Toro and Beer added (you guessed it) two more RBI singles in the 2nd and Granden Goetzman chipped in with... an RBI single in the 7th. Beer finished 3-4 on the night, while Toro, Josh Rojas, and Lorenzo Quintana all had two hits.

Bryan Abreu gets the start in game two of this series and he'll face Lake Bachar at 7:05.

Winston-Salem 6, Fayetteville 2

Fayetteville home runs: None.

The Dash dashed out to a 3-0 lead after the 1st and kept the Woodpeckers at bay.

Jacob Meyers went 2-5 and his two-run double in the 7th represented the lone Fayetteville scoring play. Corey Julks finished 2-4 and both of his hits were doubles.

Shawn Dubin went four innings and allowed four runs on six hits, walked four, and struck out four. Tanner Duncan and Jacob Billingsley both pitched two innings and they both posted identical lines: they both allowed a run on two hits, walked two, and struck out one.

After a successful Carolina League debut, Brett Conine will look to keep that momentum rolling. He'll take on Jorgan Cavanerio at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 7, Kane County 5

QC home runs: None.

The big inning has been a running theme recently for the Banditos and they used one of those to win the first game of this new series in suburban Chicago. Quad Cities scored five in the 7th to take control of this game.

Luis García had a rare off night as pitched five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits (two-run homer), walked four, and struck out five. Cody Deason picked him up by shutting down the Cougars, allowing two hits, walking two, and striking out a career-high nine over the final four innings. Deason also hit a batter but was excellent otherwise.

Marty Costes put the Banditos on the board with a two-run single in the 3rd. A couple of errors allowed Trey Dawson and Alex Holderbach to reach and then a one-out single from Michael Wielansky loaded the bases for Austin Dennis, who hit an RBI single to bring in Dawson and cut into the deficit. Holderbach ended up scoring on catcher's interference, which prompted Kane County to make a pitching change. Jeremy Peña was credited with an RBI on the play. Marty Costes greeted the new Cougars pitcher, Wesley Rodriguez, by bringing everyone in with a triple that put Quad Cities in front.

Quad Cities had eight hits in this game and they all belonged to four players: Dennis, Peña, Costes, and Wielansky. The top three (Dennis, Peña, and Costes) were all responsible for driving in the runs; Dennis and Peña drove in one while Costes had five. Costes has 16 RBI on the season and 12 of them have come in the last four days.

Memphis 10, Round Rock 2

The Express had to settle for a split after Forrest Whitley got roughed up early.

Round Rock's only two scoring plays were solo homers from Jack Mayfield and Garrett Stubbs, who finished 2-3 on the day. After starting the season 0-8, Stubbs has recorded hits in four consecutive games, including three straight in which he's recorded two hits.

Whitley only lasted 1.1 innings and allowed five runs on four hits, walked two, and struck out one. Cy Sneed was able to restore some order to this game as he allowed a run on three hits, walked three, and struck out six in five innings of relief. In fact, Sneed was the only Express pitcher who recorded more than four outs in this game. Dean Deetz and Ralph Garza Jr. both pitched 1.1 innings with drastically different results; Deetz allowed four runs, all on home runs (two solos and a two-run shot). Overall, he allowed six hits and struck out three. Garza retired everyone he faced, striking out two.

Round Rock hits the road and they'll embark on a tour of Tennessee. First up is four with Nashville as Brady Rodgers will get the start against Wes Benjamin. First pitch is at 6:35.

Corpus Christi 6, Frisco 4

CC home runs: Ronnie Dawson (2, solo in 7th), Chuckie Robinson (3, walk-off 2-run in 9th)

The Hooks scored six runs in the final three innings, capped off by Chuckie Robinson launching a two-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to win it.

José Hernández-Urquidy went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six. Ronel Blanco was the first man out of the Corpus bullpen and allowed two runs (one inherited runner charged to him) on three hits, walked one, and struck out one in 2.1 innings. Kit Scheetz allowed a hit in 1.2 innings of work.

Ronnie Dawson led off the 7th with a homer and Chuckie Robinson added an RBI single. Unfortunately, the Roughriders scored twice to retake the lead. In the 8th inning, Carmen Benedetti scored on a wild pitch and Abraham Toro tied the game again with an RBI single.

Frisco went down in order in the top of the 9th. Josh Rojas walked to start the bottom of the 9th and then proceeded to steal second and advanced to third on the errant throw down. Chuckie Robinson, who was at the plate when all of that went down, promptly sent Yoel Espinal's 1-1 pitch into the South Texas night to send everyone home happy. Dawson finished 3-3 and Robinson went 2-4.

Fayetteville 6, Carolina 1

Fayetteville home runs: Seth Beer (1, 2-run in 5th)

Well, we had to wait a bit, but Seth Beer is finally on the board in 2019.

The Jakes (Adams and Meyers) opened the scoring with a pair of RBI singles in the opening frame. Beer whacked a two-run homer in the 5th; not only was it his first home run of the season, it's also his first extra-base hit of the season. Michael Papierski hit an RBI single in the 6th and Colton Shaver drew a bases-loaded walk in the 7th. Jake Adams finished 4-5 on the evening, while Bryan de la Cruz finished 2-4 with a couple of runs scored and a couple of stolen bases.

Bryan Abreu fell one out shy of qualifying for the win but he still dominated the Mudcats. In 4.2 innings, Abreu allowed a solo homer (the only hit he allowed) to Joantgel Segovia, walked three, and struck out ten. Leovanny Rodríguez and Parker Mushinski finished things off; Leovanny allowed two hits and struck out two in 1.1 innings and Mushinski allowed two hits and struck out five over the final three innings.

Chad Donato gets the start in game two. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 7, Cedar Rapids 2

QC home runs: Enmanuel Valdez (2, 2-run in 1st), Marty Costes (1, solo in 6th)

The Banditos led wire-to-wire to get the win as they began a home series... in their opponent's park. The flood waters are still hanging around the Quad Cities, which necessitated the change of venue.

Enmanuel Valdez opened the scoring by clubbing a two-run home run in the 1st inning. Jonathan Lacroix hit an RBI single in the 5th, although he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double to end the inning. Marty Costes led off the 6th with a homer and Trey Dawson added an RBI single later in the frame. Lacroix tripled to bring Valdez home in the 7th and he scored Quad Cities' final run of the evening when Costes brought him in with a single. Lacroix led the way with three hits, while Costes and Dawson both finished 2-4. Valdez had the two-run blast and scored three times.

Shawn Dubin shackled the Kernels as he allowed just one hit and struck out seven over six shutout innings. Jojanse Torres worked around a couple of hits to throw a scoreless 7th, striking out two in his 2019 debut. Cedar Rapids spoiled the shutout with a two-run homer off Willy Collado in the 9th. Collado pitched the final two innings and allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out three.

Austin Hansen will take on Blayne Enlow in game two of this series. First pitch is at 6:35.
