Sacramento 5, Fresno 2

W- Jose Valdez (1-2)
L- Brendan McCurry (0-2)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies got stung in the 9th as Sacramento broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the inning.

Both of Fresno's runs came in the 6th on an A.J. Reed single and a J.D. Davis double. Both of Davis's hits were doubles.

The one run that David Paulino allowed in his five innings of work came on a solo homer hit by Kyle Jensen. Paulino allowed two other hits, walked one, and struck out six. Reymin Guduan was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen and allowed an unearned run, which was an inherited runner that was charged to him, a double, walked two, and struck out three in 1.1 innings. Matt Ramsey allowed a hit and struck out four in 1.2 innings. Brendan McCurry retired the first two men he faced via a popout and a strikeout in the 9th, but well... the last inning can sometimes be the toughest. He then walked the next man he faced, plunked the guy after that, and Orlando Calixte homered to put the River Cats in front.

What can you do besides dusting yourself off and trying again? Trent Thornton will face Matt Gage at 1:05 Pacific.

San Antonio 9, Corpus Christi 8

W- Matt Strahm (1-0)
L- Sean Stutzman (2-2)

CC home runs: Taylor Jones (5, solo in 2nd)

That's a serious kick to the gonads. The Missions, doing business as the Flying Chanclas de San Antonio on Saturday night, scored six in the bottom of the 9th to walk off with a win and capped off that rally with a grand slam that won it.

Josh James threw 1.2 innings and allowed one hit, which was a two-run home run hit by Kyle Overstreet. James had to battle his command and his control as well as he also issued four walks while striking out four; he needed 49 pitches to get five outs and left the bases loaded for Ralph Garza, who got James out of the 2nd and went on to throw 3.1 innings, allowing a run on three hits, walking one, and striking out one. Framber Valdez was next and he allowed five runs (four earned, three inherited runners charged to him), two hits, walked five, and struck out four in three innings. The last two walks that Framber issued came with the bases loaded and cut the Corpus lead to 8-5. Sean Stutzman got the first out of the 9th but wound up serving up the walk-off grand slam to Overstreet.

Taylor Jones got things started when he smacked a solo home run to lead off the 2nd inning. The next batter, Josh Rojas, drew a walk, stole second, and scored on Randy César's triple. César came in on a Nick Tanielu sac fly. Myles Straw walked to start the 3rd, stole second, and Jones brought him in with a single. Yordan Alvarez ripped an RBI double in the 5th inning and Jones once again came through by sending Alvarez home with a double of his own. Things got a bit interesting in the 9th as Alex De Goti stole third and then he ended up getting awarded home as well because San Antonio 3B Ty France interfered with him.

Flying Chanclas manager Phil Wellman, who is known to lose his temper every now and then, went ballistic and ended up getting tossed. France wasn't too pleased either and he wound up joining his skipper in getting the heave-ho right as he was getting set to appear at the plate in the bottom of the 9th.

Straw, who was at the plate when all of this went down, eventually worked a walk and scored on an error following an Alvarez double. Both of Yordan's hits were doubles. César (3B, RBI, R) and De Goti (2B, 2 R) also finished with two hits on the night. Jones went 3-5 and is now hitting an even .400 on the year.

Again... what can you do besides dusting yourself off and trying again?

Ryan Hartman will get the start in game 2 of this series. He'll take on Jesse Scholtens at 2:05.

Winston-Salem 6, Buies Creek 2

W- Bernardo Flores (2-2)
L- Ronel Blanco (2-1)
S- Jose Ruiz (2)

BC home runs: Abraham Toro (5, 2-run in 1st)

Both teams scored two runs in all of the innings in which they scored. Unfortunately, Buies Creek only had one such inning while Winston-Salem had three such instances.

The three pitchers who appeared for the Carolina Stros allowed two runs apiece during their time on the mound. Brandon Bielak threw 2.2 innings and allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out four. The two runs that were charged to Ronel Blanco came on a home run hit by Alex Call in the 6th. Blanco went 3.1 innings and allowed two other hits, walked one, and struck out three. Colin McKee also had two runs charged to him by way of a home run; this one came off the bat of Blake Rutherford. McKee allowed one other hit, walked one, and struck out five in two innings.

Abraham Toro's two-run blast in the 1st inning was Buies Creek's only scoring play. Chas McCormick, who hit a double right before Toro's homer, extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Hector Perez will get the start as Buies Creek and Winston-Salem wrap up their series this afternoon. First pitch is at 2:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 9, Lansing 2

W- Parker Mushinski (1-0)
L- Yennsy Diaz (3-1)

QC home runs: J.J. Matijevic (3, solo in 1st), Jonathan Arauz (4, 3-run in 3rd)

The Banditos got off to another fast start, but this time, they didn't have to hang on for dear life. Jonathan Arauz continues to terrorize the Lugnuts.

Lansing starter Yennsy Diaz entered this game with a 0.31 ERA. He had allowed just one run in his first 28.2 innings this season. By the time the Banditos were through knocking him around for three innings, his ERA ballooned to 2.56.

J.J. Matijevic was activated from the DL and he wasted little time in getting the rout started as he launched a home run to lead off the game. Arauz followed by drawing a walk. He moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a Mike Papierski flyout, and scored on a Bryan de la Cruz sac fly.

Jake Meyers walked to lead off the 3rd and advanced to third on a Matijevic single. One batter later, Arauz whacked a three-run home run. Meyers ripped a two-run triple in the 4th and scored on an Arauz sac fly. Arauz struck one last time when he ripped an RBI double in the 8th inning. He reached in all four of his plate appearances, and he and Matijevic both finished with three hits on the evening. Jake Adams went 2-5, and Bryan de la Cruz extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the 3rd.

Parker Mushinski allowed a run on three hits, walked three, and struck out eight in 5.1 innings of work. Adam Bleday tagged in for 2.2 innings and allowed a run on two hits, walked one, and struck out seven. Cole Watts allowed a couple of hits in the 9th but finished the game without any further incidents.

Patrick Sandoval will face Graham Spraker in the series finale. First pitch is at 1:05 Eastern.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Thursday, May 11, 2017

Fresno 5, Oklahoma City 3

W- David Martinez (1-4)
L- Fabio Castillo (1-2)
S- Jordan Jankowski (3)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies have won the first game of a series for the first time in 2017. They entered this game 0-8 in series openers.

David Paulino threw 3 scoreless innings in his season debut, allowing a hit, walking 4, and striking out 4. David Martinez also threw 3 innings; the three runs he allowed came on three solo homers which happen to be the only hits he allowed in this outing. Martinez also walked and struck out a batter. Kevin Comer worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless 7th, striking out 2, and Jordan Jankowski recorded a strikeout and threw two perfect innings to get the save.

Tyler White opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning. Fresno struck for 3 in the 2nd with an RBI single from Tony Kemp and a 2-run single from Preston Tucker. Kemp grounded into a force out that scored Reid Brignac in the 6th. Brignac finished 3-4 and scored a couple of runs. Kemp and Teoscar Hernandez both finished with two hits on the night. It was also nice to see Teoscar back in action after that terrifying collision with Jose Altuve in Cleveland.

Trent Thornton takes the mound for game 2 of this series. He'll be opposed by Justin Masterson. First pitch is at 7:05.

Midland 3, Corpus Christi 1

W- Lou Trivino (4-0)
L- Eric Peterson (1-2)
S- Kyle Finnegan (5)

CC home runs: None.

Make that nine consecutive defeats for the Hooks. This time, the RockHounds' pitchers shackled the Corpus offense just long enough for their offense to come alive in the final two frames.

Kyle Smith allowed just 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 over 6 shutout innings. Eric Peterson was the first man out of the Hooks bullpen and allowed 2 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 3 hits and fanned 1. Michael Freeman got the final out of the 8th, but not before allowing two singles, one of which allowed the go-ahead run to score and a walk to load the bases. Fortunately, nothing came of that bases-loaded situation. Riley Ferrell allowed a run on a wild pitch, a single, and walked 1 in the 9th.

Alejandro Garcia opened the scoring with an RBI double in the 4th that was Corpus Christi's lone scoring play. Bobby Boyd hit a triple, while Garrett Stubbs swiped his 3rd base of the year.

Game 2 of this series will have Dean Deetz taking on Corey Walter at 7:05.

Salem 10, Buies Creek 8

W- Jordan Weems (3-1)
L- Brett Adcock (0-1, 1-1 season)
S- Bobby Poyner (2)

BC home runs: None.

Brett Adcock got a rude welcome to the Carolina League and the Astros made things a bit interesting, but their comeback bid fell short.

Adcock, who was just promoted from Quad Cities, allowed 7 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 9 hits (2 solo homers), walked 1, and struck out 3 in 3.1 innings. Carlos Sierra was the first man out of the Buies Creek bullpen and threw 1.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 1, and striking out 1. Ralph Garza Jr. stopped the bleeding by throwing 3.1 scoreless innings; he allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and fanned 5. Howie Brey struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th inning.

Eduardo de Oleo put Buies Creek on the board with an RBI single in the 4th inning. Later in the frame, Anthony Hermelyn drove in another run with an RBI single of his own and de Oleo scored on a passed ball.

In the 6th, Ryne Birk hit a sac fly and Johnny Sewald ripped an RBI double. Kyle Tucker smacked an RBI double in the 7th. Birk doubled to lead off the 8th and scored on Hermelyn's 2nd RBI single of the game. Little Tuck tripled to begin the bottom of the 9th and came home on a Dex McCall groundout. Tucker, Birk, and Hermelyn all finished with 2 hits in the game.

The Astros are back on the road for 11 games, starting in Kinston, North Carolina against the Down East Wood Ducks. The Carolina League's two newest franchises will do battle in a 3-game series. Alex Winkelman will start the opener, and he'll be opposed by Emerson Martinez. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

Dayton 5, Quad Cities 3

W- Ryan Hendrix (3-1)
L- Forrest Whitley (1-2)
S- Joel Kuhnel (6)

QC home runs: Jake Rogers (6, solo in 1st)

The Dragons got the jump on Forrest Whitley with three runs in the bottom of the 1st as they took the series opener.

To his credit, Whitley pulled himself together and finished well, even though 4 runs in 5 innings doesn't look very pretty. He allowed 7 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 6. Erasmo Pinales pitched the final 3 innings and allowed a run on a wild pitch in the 8th, a triple to lead off the 8th, walked 2, and struck out 4.

Jake Rogers launched a solo blast in the 1st to open the scoring. Chuckie Robinson doubled to lead off the 2nd and scored on a single from Taylor Jones, and Rodrigo Ayarza hit an RBI single in the 7th. Rogers and Robinson finished with 2 hits apiece. Daz Cameron stole a couple of bases, giving him 8 on the season.

Jorge Alcala will start game 2 of this series. He'll take on Andrew Jordan at 7:00 Eastern.

Results for Thursday, September 1, 2016

Tacoma 2, Fresno 1 in 14 innings

W- Paul Fry (3-1)
L- Eury De La Rosa (0-3)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies walked off with the loss on Thursday to drop their penultimate series of the season.

Colin Moran opened up the scoring with an RBI single in the 7th, which turned out to be Fresno's only scoring play. Max Stassi and Jon Kemmer finished with 2 hits apiece.

David Paulino started it off by allowing 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 5 over 5 shutout innings. Aaron West was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen, and in 2 innings, he allowed a hit and struck out 3. Brendan McCurry allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 2 in the 8th. Albert Minnis was next; he allowed a hit, walked 3, and struck out 2 in 2 innings. Jordan Jankowski walked 2 and struck out 2 in a scoreless 12th, and Eury De La Rosa pitched 2+ innings; he faced 3 batters in the 14th and failed to retire any of them, and he also allowed the winning run. De La Rosa allowed 4 hits, walked 3, and struck out 1.

The Grizzlies will close out 2016 with a 4-game series in Sacramento. Evan Grills will start game 1, and he'll face Dan Slania at 7:05 Pacific.

Frisco 3, Corpus Christi 0

W- Connor Sadzeck (10-8)
L- Francis Martes (9-6)
S- Jefri Hernandez (1)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks offense was held in check on Thursday as they could only muster up 3 hits against Frisco starter Connor Sadzeck. Once their bullpen came in, they didn't fare any better either; they only had one baserunner in the final 3.1 innings.

Drew Ferguson, Ramon Laureano, and Roberto Peña had the hits, all of which were singles.

Francis Martes went 3.1 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5. Ryan Deemes was the first man out of the Hooks bullpen and he allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 2.2 scoreless, and Ryan Thompson threw 2 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and striking out 3.

Rogelio Armenteros will start the series finale, and he'll go up against Jack Snodgrass at 7:05.

Rancho Cucamonga 6, Lancaster 3

W- Mitchell White (1-0)
L- Ralph Garza Jr. (1-1, 6-5 season)

Lancaster home runs: Kyle Tucker (2, 8 season; solo in 1st), Aaron Mizell (7, 9 season; solo in 9th)

The JetHawks were rocked late by the Quakes, who scored all 6 of their runs in the final 2 innings.

Kyle Tucker opened up the scoring with a solo shot in the 1st inning. Marc Wik finished 2-4 with an RBI single in the 5th, and Aaron Mizell pulled a run back with a solo homer in the 9th. Mizell finished 3-3 on the night and scored 2 of the 3 Lancaster runs.

Jose Luis Hernandez turned in an outstanding performance, allowing just 5 hits and striking out 8 over 7 shutout innings. The Quakes got to Ralph Garza Jr. however; in 1.2 innings, he allowed 6 runs (4 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 5 hits (2-run homer) and walked 1. Alex Winkelman allowed a hit and got the final out of the 9th, but the damage was done.

The JetHawks will close out the regular season with a 4-game series against Inland Empire. A win will clinch a wild card spot. Game 1 will start at 6:35 Pacific.

Quad Cities 3, Kane County 2

W- David Schmidt (4-3, 5-4 season)
L- Carlos Hernandez (7-11)
S- Justin Ferrell (2)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos only had 3 hits in this one, but they managed to emerge victorious.

Hector Perez went 3.1 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him), a single, walked 6, and struck out 5. David Schmidt allowed 4 hits and struck out 3 in 3.2 innings, and Justin Ferrell struck out 2 over 2 perfect innings to get the save.

Quad Cities scored a couple of runs in the 1st thanks to some miscues from the Cougars. Bobby Wernes doubled to lead off the inning and ended up scoring the first run of the evening on a botched force out attempt that allowed Stephen Wrenn to reach base safely. Kristian Trompiz, who walked and advanced to 3rd on the error, scored on a passed ball as Wrenn stole 2nd. The Cougars tied the game at 2 with a run in the 4th inning, but Pat Porter put the River Bandits back in front with a sac fly in the 5th. Wernes, Trompiz, and Wrenn were in the top third of the lineup, and they had the 3 Quad Cities hits.

Enrique Chavez will start the River Bandits' home finale. He'll take on Sam McWilliams at 7:00.

Tri-City 4, Staten Island 3

W- Angelo Serrano (1-2, 2-3 season)
L- David Sosebee (2-2)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats stunned the Yankees with 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to walk off with the win.

Makay Nelson turned in his best outing as a pro with 5 no-hit innings, walking 1 and striking out 2. Edgardo Sandoval tagged in for 3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Angelo Serrano struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th inning.

Chuckie Robinson opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning. This was their only scoring play until the bottom of the 9th; in the meantime, Staten Island took a 3-1 lead.

Rodrigo Ayarza led off the bottom of the 9th with a single, and Carmen Benedetti joined him on the bases with a single. Robinson's sac bunt attempt failed, but Ronnie Dawson drew a walk to load the bases, and Taylor Jones delivered the game-winner, a double that sent everyone home happy.

Ayarza finished 3-4 with a triple and 2 runs scored, while Robinson and Jones had 2 hits apiece.

Tri-City and Staten Island will continue their series at 7:00 Eastern.

Greeneville and Elizabethton was cancelled

Due to wet grounds. As Thursday was the final day of the Appalachian League regular season, this game will not be made up, and so, the Appy Astros will finish 2016 with a 33-34 record.

The GCL Astros' final game was cancelled, as well.

Let's play two in Vermont!

Iowa 9, Fresno 5

W- Pierce Johnson (2-6)
L- Mike Hauschild (8-10)
S- Armando Rivero (1)

Fresno home runs: Jon Kemmer (15, 3-run in 7th)

The Grizz nearly fought back from a 6-0 deficit, but the Cubs scored 3 runs in the final two frames to put the game out of reach.

Colin Moran put Fresno on the board with an RBI single in the 5th. Later in the inning, Danny Worth drew a bases-loaded walk. Jon Kemmer whacked a 3-run home run in the bottom of the 7th to cut the deficit to 1, but the Grizzlies couldn't get over the hump. Chan-Jong Moon finished 3-4 and scored 2 runs from the of the order, and Worth went 2-4 with a double.

Mike Hauschild only pitched the 1st inning; he allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Albert Minnis was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen, and he allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2 in 3.2 innings. Aaron West allowed 2 hits and fanned 1 over 2.1 scoreless. Reymin Guduan came on to pitch the 8th inning and faced 3 batters, but he failed to record an out. Two of the batters he faced ended up scoring after he left the game; he allowed a hit and walked 2. Kevin Chapman took ownership of the 8th and ended up pitching the final 2 innings, allowing a run of his own on 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2.

Brad Peacock will start the series finale. He'll take on Jordan Pries at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 7, Arkansas 1

W- David Paulino (5-2)
L- Jose Molina (0-3)
S- Kyle Smith (2)

CC home runs: James Ramsay (4, solo in 4th), Ramon Laureano (3, 13 season; 3-run in 7th)

David Paulino was a winner in his return to Corpus Christi and helped the Hooks take 2 of 3 from the Travelers.

Paulino threw 6 innings, and the one run he allowed came on a solo homer hit by Wade Wass in the 2nd inning. He allowed 3 other hits and struck out 6. Kyle Smith pitched the final 3 innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2.

Yulieski Gurriel opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 1st inning. Wass's homer tied the game at 1, but Gurriel put Corpus back in front with an RBI single in the 3rd. James Ramsay smacked a solo homer in the 4th inning to push the Corpus lead to 3-1. Chase McDonald, Ramsay, and Mott Hyde all singled to lead off the 7th inning, and the Hooks took full advantage of the situation. Bobby Boyd hit a sac fly, and one batter later, Ramon Laureano capped off the evening with a 3-run home run. Laureano (3-R HR, 2 R, SB [2, 35 season]), Ramsay (solo HR, 2 R), and McDonald (2B, R) all finished with 2 hits on the night.

After a day off, the Hooks will begin their final tour of Arkansas.

Lancaster 9, San Jose 4

W- Elieser Hernandez (2-4, 6-7 season)
L- Austin Fleet (0-1)

Lancaster home runs: Marc Wik (3, solo in 6th)

A 4-run 6th inning pushed the JetHawks' lead to 9-3, and the big inning propelled them to a series win.

They also stormed out with 3 runs in the 1st inning: Drew Ferguson drove in the first run of the evening with a sac fly, and Jason Martin whacked a 2-run triple. Ferguson added an RBI single to his ledger in the 2nd, and Brooks Marlow ripped an RBI double in the 3rd. Marc Wik's solo home run was the first run of the 6th inning, and Lancaster later got RBI singles from Aaron Mizell, Ferguson, and Bryan Muñiz.

Everyone in the JetHawks lineup recorded a hit; Ferguson (3 RBI, R), Osvaldo Duarte (2B, R), and Myles Straw (2B, 2 R) all finished 2-4. Martin was the only player who didn't score, but he did have that 2-run triple in the 1st. Ferguson also stole his 28th base of the season.

Elieser Hernandez had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 5 hits (2 solo homers) and striking out 9. Ryan Deemes allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1 over 2 scoreless innings, and Dean Deetz allowed a run on a double in the 9th; the runner reached after getting hit by a pitch.

Tonight, the JetHawks will begin a 4-game series in High Desert. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 4, Peoria 0

W- Franklin Perez (3-2)
L- Ryan Helsley (8-2)
S- Albert Abreu (4)

QC home runs: Pat Porter (8, solo in 3rd)

The young guns joined forces for a shutout that gave the Banditos a series split.

Franklin Perez has announced his arrival onto the prospect scene with a fine year in a full-season league at age 18. He allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9 over 5 shutout innings. Albert Abreu has been a bit up-and-down, but there is no denying his raw talent. He completed the shutout, allowing 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 5 over the final 4 innings.

Pat Porter opened the scoring with a home run to lead off the 3rd inning. Kyle Tucker hit an RBI single in the 6th, and Randy César capped it off with a 2-run single. Little Tuck finished 3-4, and Porter went 2-4.

Yoanys Quiala will get the start for the River Bandits as they start a 4-game series in Clinton. He'll face Pedro Vasquez at 6:30.

Game 1: Tri-City 3, Vermont 0

W- Sebastian Kessay (3-1, 4-4 season)
L- Heath Bowers (2-6)
S- Carlos Sierra (1)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats took the first game in the twinbill with a one-hit shutout.

Ryan Hartman and Sebastian Kessay both tossed 3 innings; Hartman's 3 innings were perfect, and he ended up striking out 3. Kessay allowed the one hit, walked 1, and struck out 3, and Carlos Sierra struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 7th to secure the win.

Ten zeroes were put up on the scoreboard before the ValleyCats made the breakthrough in the 6th inning. Chuckie Robinson led off the inning with a double, advanced to 3rd on an error that allowed Taylor Jones to reach, and scored on a Ronnie Dawson double. Bryan De La Cruz followed with a sac fly. Marcos Almonte hit a one-out single in the 7th, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a Miguelangel Sierra single, and scored on an errant pickoff throw. Almonte and Sierra had 2 hits apiece.

How did the ValleyCats fare in their final game before the New York-Penn League All-Star break?

Game 2: Vermont 2, Tri-City 1

W- Matt Milburn (1-0)
L- Nick Hernandez (1-1)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats only had 3 hits, and they walked off with the loss.

Rodrigo Ayarza's sac fly in the 5th was Tri-City's only scoring play in game 2. Gabriel Bracamonte, Alex De Goti, and Marcos Almonte each hit a single.

Abdiel Saldaña allowed a hit and struck out 3 over 2 innings. Austin Nicely was the first man out, and he allowed a hit and struck out 3 over 3 innings. Angelo Serrano got 2 outs in the 6th, both via strikeout, and allowed an unearned run on 2 hits. Nick Hernandez got the final out of the 6th, but the winning run scored on a two-out single in the 7th. That single was the only hit he allowed, and the run was unearned. Hernandez struck out 2.

The NYPL All-Star Game will take place tomorrow from Wappingers Falls, New York, home of the Hudson Valley Renegades. Tri-City will return to action on Wednesday.

Greeneville 7, Kingsport 3

W- Reggie Johnson (3-2)
L- Adrian Almeida (0-3)

Greeneville home runs: None.

The Appy Astros fell behind 3-0 after 2 innings, but they scored the game's final 7 runs to win on Sunday.

Abraham Toro put Greeneville on the board with a 2-run single in the 3rd inning. In the 4th, Luis Payano scored on an error, and then Toro struck again with an RBI single that put Greeneville in front. Carlos Machado followed with an RBI single. Machado got plunked to lead off the 7th and scampered home on a Vicente Sanchez triple. Sanchez scored the final run of the evening on a Ruben Castro sac fly. Toro and Castro both finished with 2 hits in the game.

Ben Smith went 2 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits (solo homer) and walked 3. Reggie Johnson allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 2 in 2 innings. Cristian Javier was next; he went 4 innings and allowed a hit and fanned 3, and Lucas Williams allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 1 in a scoreless 9th.

Carlos Sanabria will take on Darwin Ramos in the third game of this series. First pitch is at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Nationals 8, GCL Astros 6

W- Matt Tindall (4-1)
L- Bryan Abreu (1-3, 1-4 season)

GCL home runs: Edgar Lorenzo (1, 2-run in 2nd)

The Nationals took control with 4 runs in the 7th.

Edgar Lorenzo's 2-run homer put the Kissimmee Stros on the board. He added an RBI single to his ledger in the 4th inning. Jose Benjamin drew a bases-loaded walk in the 5th, and Wilson Amador scored on an error following a successful double steal in the 6th inning. Benjamin went 3-4 and hit an RBI single in the 9th. Lorenzo finished 2-4 on the day.

Juan Robles went 3 innings and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 4. Saul Martinez and Bryan Abreu pitched 2 innings apiece; Martinez allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2, while Abreu allowed 4 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 3. Manuel Gonzalez struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 8th.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Saturday, June 18, 2016

Fresno 4, Tacoma 3

W- Brady Rodgers (6-3)
L- Kraig Sitton (0-2)
S- James Hoyt (15)

Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (9, solo in 1st)

A 3-run 7th inning turned the tide in the favor of the Grizzlies. Tacoma scored a run in the bottom of the 7th to make things a little too close for comfort, but Kevin Chapman and James Hoyt quashed any thoughts of a comeback.

Brady Rodgers pitched 7 innings and allowed 3 runs on 8 hits (solo homer), walked 1, and struck out 8. Kevin Chapman got the first 2 outs in the 8th via strikeout, and James Hoyt closed out the game by striking out 3 in 1.1 innings.

A.J. Reed opened the scoring with a solo home run in the 1st inning. He finished 2-5 and added an RBI double to his ledger in the 7th. Later in the inning, Reed came around to score when Matt Duffy hit a 2-run double. Preston Tucker (2 BB, R) and Eury Perez (2B, R) also finished with 2 hits on the evening.

Mike Hauschild will get the start for Fresno today. He was slated to face Adrian Sampson, but since Sampson made his Major League debut on Saturday, Tacoma will have someone else make the start. First pitch is at 1:35 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 6, Frisco 2

W- David Paulino (4-2)
L- Jacob Shortslef (1-1)
S- Eric Peterson (1, 3 season)

CC home runs: Conrad Gregor (3, solo in 4th)

Once again, the Hooks broke open a tie game in the 7th inning on their way to taking 4 out of 5 from the Roughriders.

Conrad Gregor's solo home run came with 1 out in the 4th inning and was the first run of the game.
D.J. Fisher smacked an RBI double in the 5th. Frisco scored 2 runs in the 6th to tie the game, but Corpus Christi mounted the perfect response by scoring 4 in the top of the 7th.

Just like on Friday, the Hooks' 7th-inning outburst began when the first three batters of the inning reached. Mott Hyde and Danry Vásquez led off with singles, and Alex Bregman joined them on the bases by drawing a walk. Fisher and J.D. Davis drew walks to bring in Hyde and Danry, and Bregman wound up scoring on a wild pitch. Nick Tanielu drove in the final run of the evening with a sac fly.

David Paulino went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6. Eric Peterson pitched 3 scoreless innings to record the save; he allowed 3 hits and struck out 4.

Tonight, the Hooks are in San Antonio to begin a 4-game series with the Missions. Keegan Yuhl will start game 1, and he'll take on Zech Lemond, a graduate of Waltrip High and a former Rice pitcher. First pitch is at 6:05.

Bakersfield 10, Lancaster 7

W- Tyler Pike (3-5)
L- Andrew Thome (1-1, 3-2 season)
S- Jake Zokan (2)

Lancaster home runs: None.

The JetHawks managed to respond to a 6-run 6th inning from the Blaze with 4 of their own in the 7th to make it a 1-run game, but in the end, Bakersfield was able to put the game just out of reach with a run in the 8th and another in the 9th.

Lancaster scored 3 in the 3rd inning to take the lead. Ramon Laureano drew a one-out walk and scored the JetHawks' first run on a double from Bryan Muñiz. Muñiz later scored on a botched force attempt that saw Trent Woodward reach base safely; Woodward was credited with an RBI on the play. Johnny Sewald followed by laying down an RBI bunt single to bring in Garrett Stubbs.

Bobby Boyd finished 3-5 with 2 doubles and a 2-run triple in the 7th inning. He scored when Laureano grounded into a fielder's choice. Laureano advanced to 3rd on a Muñiz single and scored on a sac fly from Stubbs.

Rogelio Armenteros went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7. Andrew Thome got burned in the 6th, and I will leave it at that. Jacob Dorris was the next pitcher to appear; he allowed 2 runs (1 earned, 1 inherited runner charged to him) on 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 5 in 2.2 innings. Ryan Thompson got the final 2 outs of the 9th via the strikeout.

The JetHawks will look to avoid the sweep as Dean Deetz gets the start. He'll take on Eddie Campbell at 2:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 3, Cedar Rapids 2

W- David Schmidt (2-0, 3-1 season)
L- Cam Booser (0-2)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos got on the board in this series by breaking a 2-2 tie in the 8th inning.

Myles Straw doubled to lead off the bottom of the 1st, advanced to 3rd on an Osvaldo Duarte sacrifice bunt, and scored the first run of the evening on an RBI single from Pat Porter. Kristian Trompiz hit a sac fly in the 5th, and Connor Goedert put Quad Cities in front with a sac fly in the 8th inning. Dex McCall finished 2-3 and was the only player on either side to record a multi-hit game.

Albert Abreu allowed a run on 3 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3 in 7 innings of work. This was his longest outing of the season. Abreu didn't post a gaudy strikeout total, but he did his job by keeping the Kernels at bay. David Schmidt pitched the final 2 innings and allowed a run on an infield single, walked 2, and struck out 1.

Justin Ferrell will start the River Bandits' final game of the 1st half. He'll take on Sam Clay at 1:15.

Connecticut 9, Tri-City 5

W- Jose Fuentes (1-0)
L- Ben Smith (0-1)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats split their first series of the season as an 8-1 deficit after 2 innings proved to be too much for them to overcome.

Stephen Wrenn doubled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and scored Tri-City's first run on a Taylor Jones RBI single. Wrenn, who reached in all 5 of his plate appearances, going 3-3 with a couple of walks, scored 4 of Tri-City's 5 runs in this game. He and Alex De Goti scored on a Daz Cameron double in the 3rd. Wrenn scored on a wild pitch in the 5th and on an RBI single from Carmen Benedetti in the 7th. Daz, Benedetti, and De Goti all had 2 hits on the night.

Ben Smith pitched 1+ inning and allowed 8 runs (5 earned) on 3 hits (3-run homer) and walked 4. Smith probably did not envision his pro debut going the way it did on Saturday, but after what he has had to endure health-wise over the last two years, he is probably immensely grateful for the opportunity to play baseball again. I'll definitely be rooting for him this season.

Hector Perez was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen, and he stopped the bleeding by throwing 4 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 3, and striking out 6. Edgardo Sandoval walked 1 and struck out 1 in 2.2 innings of work, and Josue Uribe allowed a run on a single and walked 1 in 1.1 innings.

Austin Nicely will be on the mound for the ValleyCats today as they begin a 3-game series in Brooklyn. First pitch is at 4:00 Eastern.

DSL Astros Blue 11, DSL Marlins 10

W- Ronel Blanco (2-0)
L- Anderson De Leon (0-1)
S- Johsson Arias (2)

Blue home runs: None.

The Blue team just wins. This latest victory saw them withstand a 7-run 1st inning from the Marlins and rally to erase a 10-7 deficit by scoring 4 runs in the top of the 9th inning to snatch the victory.

Juan Piñeda opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 1st inning. The Blue team scored 4 in the 2nd as Ozziel Sanchez-Galan ripped an RBI double. Nicolás Miranda drove in another run with a groundout, and Sanchez-Galan and Ronny Jimenez scored on errors. Angel De Leon ripped an RBI double in the 6th, while Carlos Canelon scored on a wild pitch in the 7th inning. The Blue team headed into the final inning trailing 10-7.

Canelon led off the inning with a double. He advanced to 3rd base on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Ronny Rafael. Miranda tied the game with a 2-run single and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Miranda (2 RBI, 3 R, 3 BB), De Leon (2B, RBI), Canelon (2B, 2 R), Rafael (RBI, 2 R), and Samir Caraballo (R, BB) all had 2 hits on the day for the Blue team.

Juan Lopez struggled out of the gate, and we'll leave it at that. Robert Corniel was the first man out of the bullpen and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing a run on 2 hits, walking 2, and striking out 1. Jesus Bernaez allowed a run on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 2 in 1.2 innings. Ronel Blanco was next, and he allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 in 3.2 innings. Johsson Arias worked around a walk to record the save; he got the final 2 outs of the game, striking out 1.

The Blue team will play the Marlins again on Monday.

DSL Astros Orange 8, DSL Rays2 2

W- Diosward Gonzalez (1-0)
L- Luis Gonzalez (0-1)
S- Kilvio Peralta (1)

Orange home runs: None.

The Orange team saw their 4-0 lead get cut into a little in the 6th inning, but they responded by scoring 4 in the bottom of the 6th to put this game out of reach.

Ramiro Rodriguez put the Orange team on the board first with an RBI triple in the 3rd inning. They scored 3 in the 5th as Ronaldo Urdaneta hit an RBI groundout and Ramiro and Gilberto Celestino hit RBI singles. In the 6th, Urdaneta reached on an error that allowed Kendy Moya to score. Ramiro followed with an RBI single, and Celestino hit a 2-run single to bring in the final runs of the day.

Ramiro Rodriguez, Moya, Urdaneta, and Felix Lucas scored 2 runs apiece for the Orange team. Ramiro finished 3-4, while Celestino went 2-3.

Diosward Gonzalez allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 over 5 shutout innings. Asael Uribe pitched the 6th and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. Kilvio Peralta got the 3-inning save, allowing 3 hits, walking 2, and striking out 2.

These two teams will play again on Monday.

W- Juan Minaya (1-3)
L- Mike Broadway (0-3)
S- James Hoyt (13)

Fresno home runs: Jack Mayfield (1, 5 season; 3-run in 9th)

Jack Mayfield's 3-run home run with two outs in the 9th was the difference in this game.

Mayfield was the one-man show on offense from the #9 spot in the order; he finished 2-4 and drove in Fresno's first run with a sac fly that turned into a double play in the 5th inning. Matt Duffy also finished 2-4; one of his hits was a double and he also scored twice.

Mike Hauschild allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 1, and struck out 7 in 7 innings of work. Juan Minaya threw a 1-2-3 8th, getting two groundball outs and a lineout in the process, and James Hoyt worked around a walk to record his 13th save of the season, striking out the side to do so.

Tommy Shirley will start game 2 of this series. He'll take on Joan Gregorio at 7:05 Pacific.

Corpus Christi 8, San Antonio 1

W- Keegan Yuhl (6-1)
L- T.J. Weir (1-2)
S- David Paulino (1)

CC home runs: Nick Tanielu (4, 8 season; 3-run in 1st), Roberto Peña 2 (3; solo in 5th, solo in 7th)

Keegan Yuhl had his way on the mound, and the Hooks offense had its way at the plate as they dominated the Missions in game 2 of this 4-game series.

Yuhl allowed just 1 hit, walked 1, and struck out 4 over 5 shutout innings. San Antonio spoiled the shutout by scoring a run against David Paulino in the 6th, which was the only blemish on what was still a solid performance. Paulino allowed 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 in 4 innings of work.

Nick Tanielu put Corpus on the board first with a 3-run home run in the 1st. Beginning in the 3rd inning and ending in the 7th, the Hooks scored 5 runs and scored one run in each inning. In the 3rd, Chase McDonald hit an RBI single. J.D. Davis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 4th, Roberto Peña hit his first solo homer of the evening in the 5th, Tanielu added an RBI double to his ledger in the 6th, and Peña capped off the evening with his 2nd solo shot of the game in the 7th.

Tanielu and Peña had 2 hits apiece, while Alejandro Garcia finished 3-4 with a run scored and a stolen base (1, 7 season).

In game 3 of this series, Kent Emanuel will face Michael Kelly. First pitch is at 7:05.

Rancho Cucamonga 8, Lancaster 1

W- Josh Sborz (6-3)
L- Dean Deetz (3-2)

Lancaster home runs: None.

This current roadtrip has been an absolute nightmare for the JetHawks as they've lost all 5 games so far and have been outscored 37-6.

Bobby Boyd's bases-loaded walk in the 3rd was Lancaster's only scoring play. They were held to just 3 hits on offense; all of them were singles.

Dean Deetz went 3.2 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits (solo and 2-run homers), walked 3, and struck out 3. Rogelio Armenteros had a weird line in his 2 innings; he allowed 3 unearned runs (2 inherited runners charged to him), walked 6, and struck out 3. Kevin Comer pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 4.

Josh James will start game 2 of this series. He'll take on Andrew Sopko at 7:05 Pacific.

Quad Cities 12, Wisconsin 0

W- Justin Ferrell (2-3)
L- Devin Williams (1-2)
S- Albert Abreu (2)

QC home runs: None.

Everyone in the Quad Cities lineup took part in the hit parade, and on the mound, Justin Ferrell and Albert Abreu shut down the Timber Rattlers.

Ferrell threw 5 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2. Abreu pitched the final 4 innings and allowed 1 hit, walked 3, and struck out 6.

Christian Correa opened the scoring with an RBI single in the 3rd inning. He advanced to 3rd on an error following an Arturo Michelena single and scored on a single from Osvaldo Duarte. Kristian Trompiz added a sac fly later in the inning. In the 4th, Pat Porter scored on an error that allowed Connor Goedert to reach; Goedert later scored on a wild pitch. Anthony Hermelyn ripped a 2-run double in the 5th, and Correa brought him home with a double. Michelena hit an RBI single to drive in Correa. Porter hit an RBI double in the 6th, and Goedert capped off the night with a 2-run double in the 8th. Michelena led the way in the hit column, finishing 3-4. Five other River Bandits had 2 hits.

In game 2 of this series, Jose Luis Hernandez will take on Marcos Diplan. First pitch is at 7:00.

DSL Astros Blue 1, DSL Royals 0

W- Jesus Bernaez (1-0)
L- Janser Lara (0-1)
S- Juan Lopez (2)

Blue home runs: Ronny Jimenez (1, solo in 1st)

Ronny Jimenez's home run in the 1st was the only scoring play of the game.

Four pitchers combined to throw a 1-hitter in this game. Maikel Sepulveda walked 4 and struck out 5 in 4 innings. Jesus Bernaez was the first man out of the Blue team's bullpen and struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 5th. Yeremi Ceballos struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 6th, and the Royals spoiled the no-hit bid against Juan Lopez, but he completed the shutout. In 3 innings, he walked 3 and struck out 4.

The Blue team is currently playing against the Rays 1.

DSL Astros Orange 7, DSL Mets2 4

W- Kilvio Peralta (1-0)
L- Jaison Vilera (0-1)

Orange home runs: Enmanuel Valdez (3, 3-run in 3rd)

Enmanuel Valdez continued the torrid start to his career; he has recorded a hit in 7 of the 8 games he has played. He clubbed a 3-run homer in the 3rd and drove in the Orange team's final run of the day with an RBI double in the 9th. Juan Infante hit an RBI double in the 2nd and scored on a single from Bernardo Heras. Hector Martinez scored on a passed ball in the 8th inning. Heras and Valdez had 2 hits apiece.

Diosward Gonzalez went 4.1 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 3. Carlos Espinoza got the final 2 outs of the 5th and allowed 2 hits. Jacques Sambo struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 6th, and Kilvio Peralta pitched the final 3 innings, allowing an unearned run, a hit, walking 1, and striking out 2.

The Orange team is currently going up against the Red Sox 2.

W- Juan Cuevas (3-0)
L- Alfredo Benitez (0-1)

One batter, Jose Benjamin ripped a 2-run homer. Carlos Canelon was the hero in the 10th as he delivered a walk-off double. Orange home runs: Anthony Rodriguez (1, 3-run in 8th), Vicente Mota (1, solo in 8th)

The Orange team used a couple of longballs in the 8th to take control of this one.

Juan Infante put the Orange team on the board first with a sac fly in the 2nd. Later in the inning, Fredy Medina hit a 2-run single. Infante added an RBI double to his ledger in the 4th and scored on a groundout from Jose Miguel Hernandez. They got 2 more in the 5th on a couple of RBI singles from Vicente Mota and Felix Lucas.
