Fresno home runs: A.J. Reed (9, solo in 6th), Tony Kemp (2, 2-run in 9th)

The Grizzlies nearly clawed their way back from a 14-5 deficit. Unfortunately... no cigar.

Reid Brignac hit an RBI single in the 2nd to put Fresno on the board. In the 3rd, Tyler White hit into a fielder's choice and an error on the play allowed two runs to score. White, who advanced to 2nd on the miscue, scored on Preston Tucker's double.

A.J. Reed launched the comeback bid by whacking a homer to lead off the 6th. The elder Tucker added a sac fly, Juan Centeno hit a 2-run single, and Reed hit a 2-run single in his second plate appearance of the inning. Tony Kemp smacked a 2-run homer in the 9th to 2. White and Tucker followed Kemp's blast with singles, but they were both stranded to end the game.

Big Tuck finished 4-5 on the evening. Centeno was 3-5 with a double, his 2-run single, and scored twice. Kemp (2-R HR, 2 R), White (2 R), Reed (solo HR, 3 RBI), and Jon Kemmer (2B, 3 R) all posted 2-hit nights.

Dean Deetz got roughed up in his 3+ innings as he allowed 5 runs (2 inherited runners charged to him) on 5 hits, walked 4, and struck out 2. The Chihuahuas had 8 straight reach base to begin the 4th before the Grizzlies could record an out. Ashur Tolliver was the first man out of the Fresno bullpen but failed to record an out. He got tagged for 6 runs (3 inherited runners charged to him). allowed 3 hits, and walked 2. Tyson Perez went 2 innings, and the 3 runs that were charged to him came on a homer hit by Jabari Blash in the 5th. Perez allowed 3 other hits and walked 1. Brian Holmes stopped the bleeding with 3 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 2.

Frisco 3, Corpus Christi 1

The Hooks couldn't get much off of Arlington's top prospect, Yohander Mendez, on Friday night and had to settle for a split in the series.

Framber Valdez went 6 innings in his Corpus debut and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 4, and struck out 3. The one hit that Sean Stutzman allowed in his 2 innings was a solo homer to Michael O'Neill in the 7th. Stutzman also walked 1 and fanned 3. Riley Ferrell worked around a hit to throw a scoreless 9th, striking out 1.

Jamie Ritchie's RBI single in the 6th was the Hooks' only scoring play. An error on the play allowed Garrett Stubbs to advance to 3rd, but he was stranded there to end the frame.

Corpus heads up I-37 to take on San Antonio. Kyle Smith will start the opener against Brett Kennedy at 7:05.

Buies Creek 7, Wilmington 4

BC home runs: Jake Rogers (4, 10 season; solo in 1st)

The Carolina Stros jumped out to a 5-0 lead, then saw it get whittled down to one run. Fortunately, they managed to score a couple of crucial insurance runs to come away with the win.

Jake Rogers launched a solo homer in the 1st to open the scoring. Buies Creek got 4 in the 4th on a 2-run single from Rodrigo Ayarza and RBI singles from Ryne Birk and Spencer Johnson. Rogers, who finished 3-5 with a stolen base (3, 4 season), scored on a wild pitch in the 8th and capped off the evening with an RBI infield single in the 9th. He now has a 9-game hitting streak. Birk and Randy César also finished with 3 hits on the evening.

Justin Ferrell allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and fanned 2 in 5 innings of work. Carlos Sierra was the first man out of the Buies Creek bullpen and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. Andrew Walter got the save with 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing a hit, walking 1, and striking out 2.

Quad Cities 8, Beloit 3

The Banditos scored 4 in the 7th to create some separation between them and the Snappers. They're just one game out of a playoff spot with 9 games to go in the first half of the Midwest League season.

Gabriel Valdez pitched 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. Cionel Perez pitched the last 4 innings and allowed an unearned run on an error, a double, and struck out 4.

Carmen Benedetti ripped a 2-run double in the 3rd to put Quad Cities on the board. Wander Franco smacked an RBI double in the 4th, and Jonathan Arauz scored on a wild pitch in the 5th. Arauz drew a 1-out walk in the 7th and eventually scored on an error that allowed Benedetti to reach. Later in the frame, Yordan Alvarez hit a sac fly, and Chuckie Robinson launched a 2-run homer to bring in the last of the Banditos' runs.

Arauz (3 R, BB), Ronnie Dawson (2 2B, R), Osvaldo Duarte (2B, R), and Benedetti (2B, 2 RBI, R) all finished with 2 hits on the evening.

Carlos Sanabria gets the start in game 2. He'll go up against Dalton Sawyer at 7:00.

DSL Astros Blue 9, DSL Red Sox 1

Blue home runs: Ronny Rafael (3, 2-run in 3rd)

Team Blue swept the Red Sox in their first encounter. They got out to a 5-1 lead and tacked on 4 more in the 9th for good measure.

Ronny Rafael's 2-run blast in the 3rd opened the scoring. Rhandall Sanchez scored on an error in the 4th. César Cortez tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the 5th, and Kendy Moya had an RBI single in the 6th.

The Blue team parlayed a bases-loaded, 1 out situation into 4 runs in the 9th as Anthony Rodriguez hit an RBI single, Sanchez had a sac fly, and Ronaldo Urdaneta ripped a 2-run triple. Rafael finished 2-5 on the day.

Angel Macaure allowed 2 hits, walked 4, and struck out 4 over 4 scoreless innings. Oscar Severino allowed a run on a groundout, a double, and struck out 1 in the 5th, and Antonio Pujols allowed 4 hits while striking out 4 over 4 scoreless.

The Blue team will face the Marlins at 10:30 AM Eastern.

DSL Dodgers2 3, DSL Astros Orange 1

Orange home runs: None.

Both teams had 7 hits... the Orange team scored fewer runs. They threatened in the 9th but left the bases loaded to end the game.

Michael Garcia went 2-4 and spoiled the shutout with an RBI single in the 9th. Ramiro Rodriguez also went 2-4.

Diosward Gonzalez went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits (solo homer), walked 2, and struck out 5. Carlos Perdomo pitched the final 5 innings and allowed an unearned run on 3 hits and struck out 3.

Team Orange will take on the Cubs 1 at 10:30 AM Eastern.

The Grizzlies are back home, and they'll start a 4-game series with Iowa tonight at 7:05 Pacific. César Valdez will start for Fresno.

Northwest Arkansas 13, Corpus Christi 3

This was a 4-3 game after the 7th inning, but the Naturals turned it into a laugher with 9 runs in the final two frames.

Both teams scored a run in the 1st; Corpus Christi's run came in the form of a sac fly from J.D. Davis, who also ripped an RBI ground-rule double in the 5th, Tony Nuñez added an RBI single in the 6th, James Ramsay scored 2 of the 3 Hooks runs.

Cy Sneed went 6 innings and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits (2 solo homers), walked 1, and struck out 6. Eric Peterson tagged in for 2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and struck out 4. Unfortunately, the 9th inning was where it all unraveled for the Hooks; Michael Freeman and Jacob Dorris bore the brunt of the Naturals' wrath in the final inning. I'll leave it at that.

The Hooks will start a 3-game series with Arkansas tonight at 7:05. Trent Thornton will take on Alex Blackford.

Lancaster 8, Inland Empire 6

Inland Empire got on the board with 3 runs in the 2nd, but the JetHawks responded with 6 in the 3rd to take control of this game.

Marc Wik ignited the big 3rd inning with a one-out single. He advanced to 3rd on a Johnny Sewald double and scored Lancaster's first run on an Osvaldo Duarte groundout. Bobby Boyd followed with an RBI single; he advanced to 3rd on a single from Bryan Muñiz and wound up scoring on a wild pitch. Jamie Ritchie put the JetHawks in front with an RBI single, and Trent Woodward finished off the 3rd with a 2-run double. Boyd hit a sac fly in the 4th, and in the 7th, Muñiz scored on an error following a sac bunt attempt from Ritchie.

Sewald went 4-5 with 2 doubles, a run scored, and a stolen base (20, 36 season). Muñiz (2 R) and Woodward (2B, 2 RBI) both finished 2-5.

Akeem Bostick went 5.2 innings and allowed 4 runs on 10 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 4. Scott Weathersby was the first man out of the Lancaster bullpen, and he struck out 2 over 1.1 perfect innings. Andrew Thome allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits and struck out 1 in the 8th, and Dean Deetz struck out 2 in a 1-2-3 9th to get the save.

Tonight, the JetHawks will start a 3-game series with San Jose. First pitch is at 6:35 Pacific.

Peoria 7, Quad Cities 4

L- Matt Bower (4-2, 6-5 season)

The Banditos tried to climb out of a 7-0 hole, but it proved to be too much for them to overcome.

Matt Bower went 4 innings and allowed 7 runs on 8 hits, one of which was a grand slam, walked 3, and struck out 5. Justin Ferrell allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2 over 3.2 scoreless innings, and Adam Whitt got the final out of the 8th with a strikeout.

Dex McCall ripped a 2-run double in the 6th to put Quad Cities on the board. Myles Straw finished 2-5 and drove in the other two River Bandits runs with an RBI single in the 7th and a groundout in the 7th. Randy César and Arturo Michelena also had 2 hits apiece.

Framber Valdez will start game 3 of this series. He'll face Jorge Rodriguez at 7:00.

Game 1: Tri-City 13, Lowell 2

The ValleyCats romped to a game 1 victory.

Rodrigo Ayarza put Tri-City on the board with a 2-run double in the 2nd inning. One batter later, he scored on a Miguelangel Sierra double. Spencer Johnson missed out on the party, but he was involved in a play that resulted in runs for the ValleyCats in the 3rd; he reached on a botched force attempt also allowed Chuckie Robinson and Taylor Jones to score. Later in the inning, Ayarza added a sac fly. Ronnie Dawson launched a 2-run homer in the 4th inning, and the ValleyCats capped it off in the 7th with an RBI double for Marcos Almonte, an RBI single from Ayarza, and Brauly Mejia provided the cherry with a 3-run homer.

Edgardo Sandoval went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3. Makay Nelson allowed a hit, walked 4, and struck out 1 over 3 scoreless to get the win.

They played another one in Lowell. How did that go for the ValleyCats?

Game 2: Lowell 7, Tri-City 0

TC home runs: None.

Tri-City missed a chance to pull even with Lowell in the standings as they got blanked in game 2; all they could muster up on offense was 4 singles.

Enrique Chavez allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (2-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 4. Sean Stutzman was the first man out of the bullpen; he allowed 4 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. Howie Brey allowed 2 hits and got the final out of the 6th.

In their final series before the New York-Penn League All-Star Game, the ValleyCats will head to Vermont. Game 1 of this series starts at 7:05 Eastern.

Johnson City 14, Greeneville 3

L- Colin McKee (0-2)

Greeneville home runs: None.

Johnson City stormed out to a 10-1 lead after two innings and basically cruised to the win.

Ray Henderson drove in 2 of the 3 Greeneville runs; he grounded into a force out that allowed Jonathan Arauz to score in the 1st inning and hit an RBI double in the 8th. Vicente Sanchez hit an RBI groundout in the 7th.

Colin McKee and Diogenes Almengo both had tough nights on the mound. Luis Ramirez was the third pitcher to appear for Greeneville, and he allowed a run on 4 hits and struck out 1 in 3.1 innings. Patrick Sandoval pitched the final 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits (2-run homer), walked 1, and struck out 1.

Forrest Whitley will make his Greeneville debut tonight. He'll face Ian Oxnevad at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 1, GCL Marlins 0

There was only one run in this game, and it belonged to the Kissimmee Stros. Joan Mauricio hit a sac fly that turned into an inning-ending double play in the 2nd inning. Wander Franco and Randy Vasquez had 2 hits apiece; Vasquez scored the only run of the day.

Felipe Tejada allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 4 over 3 scoreless innings. Saul Martinez was next, and in 1.2 innings, he allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 2. César Rosado got Martinez out of a bases-loaded predicament in the 5th and completed the shutout. He allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 9 in 4.1 innings.

DSL Astros Blue 4, DSL Dodgers2 3

The Blue team took control of this game with 2 runs in the top of the 8th inning.

Angel De Leon opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 1st inning, and Carlos Canelon scored on an error in the 2nd. In the 8th, Canelon drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game, and De Leon scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Ronny Jimenez finished 2-5.

Yulian Frontado allowed a run on 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 2. Yeremi Ceballos went 2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1, and Carlos Perdomo allowed 2 hits and struck out 3 in 3 innings.

OKC home runs: Kiké Hernandez (1, solo in 4th; 2 season)

The RedHawks offense was mowed down by Mike Fiers, who struck out 10 of them. Kiké Hernandez went 2-4 with a solo homer (1) in the 4th and scored 2 of the 3 OKC runs. They got a pair of RBI groundouts from Robbie Grossman and Ronald Torreyes in the bottom of the 9th. Gregorio Petit went 2-5, and Andy Simunic finished 3-4.

Jake Buchanan went 4 innings and allowed 3 runs (all on a homer from Hunter Morris) on 6 hits and struck out 2. 5 relievers pitched an inning each: Darin Downs (5th) gave up a run on 2 hits and struck out the side. Chia-Jen Lo (6th) worked around a hit and a walk to throw a scoreless inning. Ditto for Jason Stoffel (7th), who struck out 1. Kevin Chapman (8th) allowed a run on 2 hits and struck out 1, and Josh Zeid struck out the side in order in the 9th.

Corpus Christi 6, Frisco 4

With Jayne in attendance, the Hooks jumped out tot a 6-1 lead, although it got a little close for comfort at the end righ there. I don't know the exact record of all Astros affiliates when she's in attendance, but I'm pretty sure she's the good-luck charm.

The Hooks went all relievers in this one, although the guy that started has done so in the past. Jordan Jankowski got the start as the starting pitchers got an extra day of rest. He went 3 innings and gave up a run on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. The first man out of the bullpen was Troy Scribner, fresh from Kissimmee. Clearly not fazed from the effects of going straight to the Texas League from extended spring training, Scribner tossed 2 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking 2, and striking out 1 in the process. The organization's top facial hair prospect, Michael Dimock, was next, and he threw 2 scoreless. He allowed a hit and struck out 1. Pat Urckfitz allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits and struck out 1 as he got 2 outs in the 8th, 1 via strikeout. Jorge De Leon did allow an unearned run in the 9th, but was able to get the 4-out save, allowing a hit and striking out 1.

The Hooks got the scoring started in the 1st as Andrew Aplin scored on an error that allowed Preston Tucker to reach. After Frisco tied it with 1 in the top of the 2nd, the Hooks responded with a Tyler Heineman RBI single and a 2-run double from Nolan Fontana. Jio Mier chipped in with a 2-run double of his own in the 6th inning. Preston Tucker and Chris Epps had 2 hits apiece, while Leo Heras was 1-2 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored.

Brady Rodgers will take the mound in game 2 of this series; he'll be opposed by Luke Jackson. First pitch is at 7:10.

Lancaster 6, Rancho Cucamonga 3

Lancaster home runs: Carlos Perdomo (1, solo in 5th)

The JetHawks were held in check by Clayton Kershaw for 5 innings. Let's see... the reigning Cy Young winner against a Class A Advanced lineup... that's to be expected, right?

Well, someone forgot to tell Carlos Perdomo that. On his 24th birthday, he had both of the JetHawks' hits off Kershaw, including a home run to lead off the 5th (1) that put them on the board, down 2-1. Perdomo was the only player on either side to have a multi-hit game; both teams only had 5 apiece.

After Kershaw exited, they got themselves going and finished on a 6-1 run. Rio Ruiz tied it with a double in the 6th and wound up scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Ruiz wasn't done yet; he drew a bases-loaded walk in the 7th, and Brandon Meredith provided some separation with a 2-run single. In the process, they rocked Julio Urias, the 17-year-old phenom from Mexico who was rated by Baseball America as the Dodgers' #3 prospect.

Kyle Smith fought hard against Kershaw. The result was a very solid outing for him, and he got the W to boot. In 5 innings, Smith gave up 2 runs (both on solo homers), one other hit, walked 1, and struck out 5. Lance McCullers had a bit of a scare, as he slipped on the mound and was favoring his elbow (initially leg) a little in the 9th.

At the time of this incident, there was 2 outs in the 9th. He shook it off and got that last out. McCullers went 4 innings and gave up a run on 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 3.

Peoria 8, Quad Cities 4

The River Bandits were victimized by the multi-run homer in this one; namely the 3-run home run and the grand slam. Peoria only scored in 2 innings, but they put up 4 in both of them.

Brian Holberton went 2-4 and put QC on the board first in the 1st with a 2-run double. James Ramsay hit an RBI single in the top of the 6th, and Conrad Gregor went 3-5 with an RBI double in the 7th. Chan-Jong Moon was 1-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 steals (6).

Kent Emanuel went 4 innings and gave up 4 unearned runs on 5 hits (3-run homer), walked 2, and struck out 3. Chris Cotton allowed a grand slam and struck out 2 in the 5th. Jandel Gustave allowed 2 hits and struck out 3 in 2 scoreless, and Tyler Brunnemann struck out the side in order in the 8th.

In the middle game of this series, Michael Feliz and Evan Grills will face Silfredo Garcia at 1:00.

IF Carlos Perdomo (24)
Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela by the Phillies in 2007, Perdomo signed with Houston as a minor league free agent prior to the 2013 season. Perdomo spent the vast majority of last season at Lancaster, hitting .294/.374/.377 for the season. In the first 11 games of the 2014 campaign, he is hitting .355/.421/.452 for the JetHawks.

1B Chuck Harrison (73)
Harrison was the first major league player to have come out of Texas Tech University. He played for the Astros from 1965 to 1967. Although quite a slugger in the minor leagues where he hit 40 home runs in one season in 1964, he was never able to even come close to that kind of power in the Astrodome. He was traded to Atlanta along with Sonny Jackson in 1967 for Denny Lemaster and Dennis Menke.

RHP Bill Greif (64)
Drafted by Houston in the third round in 1968, Greif only pitched in seven games for the Astros in 1971 before being shipped to San Diego as part of a trade for LHP Dave Roberts. His first major league victory came when he went in to pitch in relief in the 20th inning of a 21 inning affair against the Padres.

OKC home runs: Jon Singleton (5, 2-run in 7th)

The RedHawks were trailing 6-1 after the 3rd inning, but finished the game on a 7-0 run which culminated in Singleton's tie-breaking blast in the 7th inning. And so, life after George began with a victory for the Oklahoma City RedHawks.

Gregorio Petit opened the scoring with a sac fly in the 3rd. Domingo Santana extended his hitting streak to 7 games with a single in the 2nd and hit a groundout that scored Singleton in the 4th. OKC got 4 in the top of the 6th to tie the game. Jonathan Meyer hit an RBI single, and then Andy Simunic hit into a force out that brought Erik Castro home. Austin Wates went 2-5 with a 2-run single. Everyone in the lineup had a hit except for Simunic, who still got an RBI and scored despite going 0-4. Singleton finished 3-5, while Wates, Meyer, and Ronald Torreyes had 2 hits apiece.

Jake Buchanan was knocked around in his 2.2 innings; he allowed 6 runs (4 earned; all 6 runs came in the 3rd) on 7 hits (solo homer) and walked 2. The bullpen picked him up and limited the damage to only the 3rd inning.

Jose Cisnero got the final out of the 3rd... in fact, he retired all 9 Sky Sox he faced, striking out 6 of them. Raúl Valdés came on with 2 outs in the 6th.... and got 2 strikeouts in the inning. He struck out Jason Pridie on a wild pitch (he reached), and then got Tim Wheeler to look at strike 3 to actually end the inning. Valdés then proceeded to throw a scoreless 7th, working around a ground rule double from Ben Paulsen. Jason Stoffel struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 8th, and Josh Zeid finished it with a 1-2-3 9th.

In game 3 of this series, Collin McHugh and Nick Tropeano will take on Tyler Matzek. First pitch is at 7:35.

Lancaster home runs: Tony Kemp (2, led off game), Carlos Correa (2, solo in 7th)

The JetHawks took the series in emphatic fashion as Kyle Smith and Lance McCullers combined on a 3-hit shutout, and the offense completely overwhelmed the High Desert pitching staff. Everyone in the starting 9 had a hit, paced by Tony Kemp, who was a double shy of the cycle in 5 at-bats, and Carlos Perdomo, who finished 3-3. Lancaster scored in 5 straight innings (3rd-7th).

Kemp wasted no time in kicking off the scoring as he took Dylan Unsworth deep to begin the game. Teoscar Hernandez hit an RBI ground-rule double and Carlos Correa added a sac fly in the 2nd. Dan Gulbransen had a 1-out triple in the 4th and came home on a Perdomo sac fly.

Ruben Sosa led off the 5th with a single and scored on a triple from Kemp. An error from High Desert SS Tyler Smith allowed Kemp to score and Hernandez to reach; Teoscar was later credited with an RBI on the play. He would steal 2nd (6) and eventually score on Roberto Peña's single. Perdomo doubled to lead off the 6th and came around to score on a Danry Vasquez single. Correa led off the 7th with a homer (2), and one batter later, Rio Ruiz hit a double. Perdomo brought him home for the JetHawks' final run of the game, although he was thrown out between 1st and 2nd to end the inning.

Kyle Smith doesn't seem to be fazed by High Desert's reputation as being the most extreme hitter's park in baseball; remember, he threw a complete game shutout while allowing 2 hits in his 2nd start with the JetHawks on August 10, 2013. This time, he tossed 5 shutout innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 2, and struck out 4. Lance McCullers finished it off with 4 scoreless and gave up a hit, walked 2, and struck out 2.

The JetHawks will head home to face these very same Mavericks. In the opener, Chris Devenski and Josh Hader will take on Tyler Pike at 6:30 Pacific.

Quad Cities 3, West Michigan 2 in 11 innings

QC home runs: None.

The Bandits won the series as Chase McDonald delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th. The big man finished 3-5 as he's looking to get himself going at the plate. They opened up the scoring with a pair in the bottom of the 1st; both runs came with 2 outs. Jack Mayfield doubled, then scored when Conrad Gregor sent a ball back up the middle. After a McDonald single put runners on the corners, Brian Holberton brought Gregor home with an infield single that was grounded to the pitcher. Gregor now has a 7-game hitting streak.

Michael Feliz got the start and threw 4 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits, walking 3, and striking out 4. Evan Grills allowed 2 runs (both in the 6th) on 6 hits and issued a walk in 3.2 innings. Tyler Brunnemann walked 1 and struck out 2 over 2.1 scoreless frames, and Zach Morton worked around a hit and a walk to pitch a scoreless 11th, striking out 1.

In a rematch of last year's Midwest League Championship Series, the River Bandits will welcome the South Bend Silver Hawks to Modern Woodmen Park for a 3-game series. Gonzalo Sanudo and Adrian Houser will take on Braden Shipley at 7:00.

Tuesday's Games

Lancaster over Inland Empire 6-1 in 10 innings
This was a pitchers' duel through the first nine, but the JetHawks bats came alive in the 10th inning to force a Game 5 back in Lancaster. Tommy Shirley took the mound and allowed the only Inland Empire run on four hits over five and a third innings. He walked one and struck out two. Gera Sanchez followed and got a key strikeout to leave the bases loaded in the sixth. Jordan Jankowski, Kenny Long, Mike Hauschild and Travis Ballew each took their turn and each provided hitless relief to keep the JetHawks in the game. The 'Hawks scored their first run in the eighth as Carlos Perdomo (3x4 2B BB RBI R) doubled in Joe Sclafani (2x3 2B 2BB 2R) who had doubled earlier in the frame. Perdomo was given the start at second in place of the slumping Delino DeShields. In the 10th inning, Lancaster loaded the bases in short order on a Sclafani walk and singles from Nolan Fontana and Perdomo. An Andrew Aplin sac fly scored the first run, but then back-to-back two-run doubles from Tyler Heineman and Brandon Meredith (3x4 2-2B BB 2RBI) blew the game open. Lancaster was dubbed the Heart Attack Hawks in 2012 for coming back and coming from behind time and again. I am thrilled to tell you that the Heart Attack Hawks are back!

State College over Tri-City 2-1 in 11 innings
This was another pitchers' duel with the two teams combining to allow only eight hits on the night. Evan Grills pitched a beauty, allowing one run via the long ball in the fifth inning. That was one of only two hits he gave up in eight innings of work. He walked one and struck out six. Chris Munnelly followed with two scoreless frames. Edison Frias was charged with the loss as he allowed the go ahead run to score in the 11th on a throwing error. The 'Cats lone run came in the second on a Brian Holberton sac fly scoring Brett Booth (2x5). Tri-City will now travel to State College for the second game in the three-game series with their backs against the wall and Michael Feliz on the mound. It should be a good one.

Player of the Day: Carlos Perdomo gets the nod for making the most of his first playoff start. Not only did he double in the tying run in the eighth, his slash hit single in the 10th was a big key to the JetHawks rally.

Pitchers of the Day: I cannot say enough about the entire JetHawks pitching staff. Tommy Shirley made his first start since July 30th and pitched like a champ. And then FIVE relievers come in and don't allow another hit the rest of the way? Gravy. But I cannot ignore the beautiful start from Evan Grills. It was arguably the best start of his professional career and, in a perfect world, it should have resulted in a "W."

Oklahoma City over Nashville 5-4 in 14 innings
Bobby Doran tossed the first five and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four. He was followed by five and a third scoreless innings from Pat Urckfitz, Jose Cisnero and Jorge de Leon. Jason Stoffel allowed one run in the top of the 12th, but the RedHawks came back to re-knot the game in the bottom of the frame. Stoffel went on to put up zeroes in the 13th and 14th and was rewarded with the win when Jose Martinez (3x7) hit a walk-off double to end the marathon. Way back in the fourth inning, George Springer scored the first run on a passed ball, and Japhet Amador scored the second on a Che-Hsuan Lin sac fly. Another run came across in the eighth on a Springer RBI single. Although Springer went three-for-six with an RBI and scored twice, he did not add any home runs or stolen bases to his totals. Currently at 37/43, he has four more games in which to gain entrance to the 40/40 club.

Corpus Christi over Frisco 6-2
R.J. Alaniz (6IP 4H 2R 3BB 3SO) allowed the only two Frisco runs in the second and improved his record to 8-9. He was followed by two picture perfect innings from Andrew Robinson. Jonas Dufek allowed no hits in the ninth, but finally allowed his first walk since his promotion to AA (while lowering his ERA to 0.56). Michael Burgess hit a lead-off double and was driven in by Ronald Torreyes (3x4 R) for the first Hooks run in the second. Torreyes doubled in another run in the fourth. The Hooks put up a crooked number in the fifth, scoring three on RBI singles from Matt Duffy and Jio Mier. The final run came in the sixth on an RBI double from Kike Hernandez. Jonathan Meyer went four-for-five and scored a run.

Lake Elsinore over Lancaster 11-9
Kyle Smith got hit hard. He was charged with seven runs on six hits (three home runs) and two walks in only two official innings of work (he pitched to three batters in the third without recording an out). Blair Walters and Tyson Perez let four more runs score over the next four innings. Jordan Jankowski did a great job pitching the final three and halting the parade of Storm runners from crossing the plate. Carlos Perdomo did his best to keep the 'Hawks in the game as he went three-for-four with a walk, three doubles, four RBI and scored twice. Nolan Fontana was also three-for-four with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored. Fontana drew his 101st and 102nd walks of the season as well. Delino DeShields was one-for-five with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. DeShields also stole his 50th base of the season. Joe Sclafani hit his 27th double of the season.

Quad Cities over Wisconsin 6-3
Joe Bircher (3.2 7H 3R/2ER 3BB 2SO) got the start and was followed by Jamaine Cotton who pitched four strong innings of relief for the win. Patrick Christensen got his first save for Quad Cities. Rio Ruiz (3x4) singled in two runs in the first and one in the third to go with a Danry Vasquez RBI double in the latter frame. Roberto Pena (2x4) doubled in the final two runs in the ninth. Austin Elkins went two-for-three with a walk and scored twice.

Vermont over Tri-City 8-3 in 7 innings (Game 1)
Evan Grills took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in only one and two-thirds innings. Justin Hess got the final out of the second, but then struggled as he pitched to five batters in the third without recording an out and allowed two additional runs to score. Zach Dando righted the ship with four scoreless innings. Conrad Gregor went three-for-three with a ground rule double RBI, and Brett Booth went two-for-three with an RBI.

Vermont over Tri-City 4-0 in 7 innings (Game 2)
Kevin Comer (4.2IP 5H 3R 2BB 7SO) took the loss. The fourth Vermont run came against Chris Munnelly in the seventh. The 'Cats were held to five hits with Ryan Dineen having the only multi-hit game, including a double. Conrad Gregor also doubled in the game.

GCL Yankees2 over GCL Astros 5-2
Agapito Barrios (4IP 6H 4R/0ER 2BB 1SO) got the start and the loss. He wasn't helped by the five Astros errors in the game. Jorge Perez tossed three scoreless, and Juan Santos allowed the final run in the eighth. The Astros got one in the third on a Yonathan Mejia sac fly scoring Luis de la Rosa and one in the seventh as Hector Roa scored from third on a ground out. Alex Gonzalez went two-for-four and Luis Reynoso had the only extra-base hit, a double.

Player of the Game: Carlos Perdomo did his best to keep Lancaster in the game last night. Perdomo is hitting .457/.512/.543 over his last 10 games. Rio Ruiz gets honorable mention for his three RBI night.

Pitchers of the Game: I'm going to award the honors to both Jordan Jankowski and Jamaine Cotton. Jankowski did his best to give Lancaster the opportunity to come back and Cotton really stretched it out with four terrific innings of relief to get a well-deserved win.

Saturday's Games

Greeneville Astros 6, Pulaski Mariners 5
Greeneville broke their losing skid on Saturday at four games. Jordan Mills (4-1) threw the first five innings and tallied the win, giving up two runs on three hits, walking one and K-ing three. Austin Chrismon earned his first ever save after throwing the final four frames. Chrismon had to work for it, allowing three runs, including a homer in the ninth, four hits, two walks as he struck out four. Angel Ibanez was the only Astro with more than one hit in the game, batting two-for-three with a double, two runs scored, an RBI, a walk and a strikeout. Brian Holberton batted one-for-three with a pair of RBI, a double and a walk.

GCL Pirates 2, GCL Astros 3

This game was tied in the sixth and the Astros went on to win it in the bottom of the ninth after Jose Fernandez (2X4 R 2B) and Ydarqui Marte (1X2 2B 2RBI BB) hit back-to-back doubles. Marte's was good for the win, in walk off fashion, at home. Luis Ordosgoitti started on the hill for the Astros and through five only allowed a hit, walking a pair and striking out three. Matt Heidenreich picked up his first blown save after allowing two runs that tied the game in the sixth. Zachary Dando (1-1) pitched the final two frames and left with the win, not giving up a hit, walking one and striking out two. Jose Solano (1X3 RBI BB SO) knocked in the first run of the game in the third with an RBI single, his 28th RBI of the season.

DSL Astros 5, DSL Rays 3

The DSL Astros scored three runs in the fourth and pulled away for what would be a win a Saturday. Four Rays errors on the night and two in the fourth inning would help them. Harold Arauz (4-0) tossed the first six innings and earned the win, allowing two runs on seven hits as he struck out three. Angel Heredia collected his 12th save after working the final two frames. Heredia recorded a run, three hits and four Ks, retiring the final five in order. Kristian Trompiz was the only player with multiple hits, batting two-for-five and Alexander Melendez (1X3 R 2B 2RBI BB) recorded the only Astros extra base hit of the game and stole second and third base in the three-run fourth. [Note from Jayne: The DSL team held on until a week left to play in the season before being eliminated from playoff contention and are poised to put up a winning record for the season, a far cry from their 22-47 record in 2012. Well done!!!]

Tri-City ValleyCats 6, Staten Island Yankees 3

Tri-City had the lead the entire game and their four runs in the seventh was just icing on the cake of their third win in a row. No ValleyCat had more than one hit and only one recorded and extra base hit on Saturday. To start the seventh inning, three of the first four batters drew walks, loading the bases. Tyler White (1X4 R 2RBI) then hit a single, bringing two runs home. The final two runs of the inning scored on a fielding error and wild pitch. Troy Scribner (1-1) threw five and a third, coming on for the last out of the third, and tallied the win. Scribner allowed a run on four hits, walked one and struck out eight along the way. Tyler Brunnemann was awarded his first save after taking over for the last two outs of the game. Charles Basford began the inning, but quickly gave up two runs before Brunnemann entered to retire the final two batters in order.

Burlington Bees 6, Quad Cities River Bandits 4

Quad Cities moved to five losses in a row after this game on Saturday. Joe Bircher (3-3) was on the hill for the first five frames and would take the loss after giving up five runs, 10 hits and a walk during his shift. Carlos Correa was on fire at the plate as the only River Bandit with multiple hits. Correa hit three-for-three in the game with two doubles, an RBI, a walk, a run scored and a stolen base.

High Desert Mavericks 13, Lancaster JetHawks 9

13 proved to be very unlucky for Lancaster on Saturday, representing the runs scored against them in the loss. Even after a six-run eighth inning, Lancaster was still short five runs for the tie. Jesse Wierzbicki (1X5 R HR 3RBI SO) and Dan Gulbransen (1X5 R HR RBISO) were part of the offense in the eighth, hitting back-to-back home runs for the first three ticks of their run in the inning. MP Cokinos (2X5 R 2RBI) added a couple RBI to his total in the eighth with an RBI single. Carlos Perdomo went three-for-three in the game, scoring two runs and drawing a walk. Brady Rodgers started and collected the loss after five and two-thirds innings on the bump. Rodgers was charged with six runs (5 ER) on 12 hits, two walks while he struck out seven.

Corpus Christi Hooks 3, Arkansas Travelers 9

The Hooks allowed all nine runs through the first three innings and spent the rest of the game trying to catch up. After a single in the fourth, Hooks pitchers didn't allow any more hits or walks in the game, although four Arkansas batters reached after being hit by pitches in that time. Kyle Hallock (0-3) picked up the loss after working the first two frames. Hallock allowed seven runs on seven hits (2HR), walked two and struck out one. Kiké Hernandez went three-for-four batting with two runs scored, two doubles and a walk. Raoul Torrez (2X4 2RBI BB SO), Domingo Santana (2X2 2B BB) and Drew Muren (2X4 R SO) all had two hits in the game.

Albuquerque Isotopes 1, Oklahoma City RedHawks 5

After allowing an unearned run in the first, the RedHawks went on to shutout Albuquerque for the rest of the game, picking up their third win in a row. Giving up just a pair of singles in the fourth and ninth innings after that. Starter Paul Clemens (3-1) picked up the win, going six and two-thirds, allowing the unearned run, two hits, walking three and striking out six. Brandon Laird (2X4 R), Jimmy Paredes (2X3 RBB SO) and Che-Hsuan Lin (2X4 R SO) all had two hits in the game and scored runs, but Carlos Perez led the offensive charge, batting two-for-three with a run scored, a double, two RBI and one strikeout.   

Player of the Day: Three players, Carlos Correa, Carlos Perdomo and Kiké Hernandez share the crown today. All three were on fire yesterday at the plate and perhaps more impressive, between the three—not one strikeout.

Pitcher of the Day: Paul Clemens pitched well Saturday and is taking the honor today because of it. Austin Chrismon also gets a mention for his first career save, a four inning affair. [Note from Jayne: I'm giving Luis Ordosgoitti an honorable mention in his rehab start with the GCL. I've always been a fan of Ordosgoitti and I'm happy to see him healthy and pitching well again.]

Sunday's Games

Las Vegas over Oklahoma City 4-3
David Martinez didn't exactly receive a warm welcome to AAA. In four and a third innings, he allowed four runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out three. One of those runs came across on Wade LeBlanc's watch who otherwise provided scoreless relief, as did Jose Cisnero and Pat Urckfitz who followed him out of the bullpen. The RedHawks scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning. Jimmy Paredes doubled, advanced on a sac fly and scored on a ground out, with the other two coming across on back-to-back RBI doubles from Jon Singleton and Jose Martinez. Marwin Gonzalez was two-for-four and scored a run.

Arkansas over Corpus Christi 7-4
Kyle Hallock took the loss as he gave up four runs (three earned) in his four innings of work. Alex Sogard pitched an uneventful fifth but gave up a three-run homer in the sixth and was followed by three scoreless innings from Carlos Quevedo. The Hooks scored their runs one at a time with Domingo Santana singling in Ronald Torreyes in the first, Erik Castro scoring on a ground out in the second, Santana hitting a solo shot in the third and Castro also connecting on a long one in the eighth.

Lancaster over High Desert 9-8
Colton Cain got the win despite allowing six run (five earned) in his six innings of work. He was followed by two scoreless from Gera Sanchez in his Lancaster debut. Travis Ballew came in to pitch the ninth and allowed the final two runs, but ultimately converted his 19th save. The JetHawks wasted no time in starting the scoring as Delino DeShields doubled and scored on a Carlos Perdomo (3x5 HR 4RBI 3R) line drive in the first; Perdomo scored later in the frame on a Chris Epps sac fly. Dan Gulbransen took one deep in the second for his first 'Hawks home run. Perdomo took his turn knocking one out in the fourth and scoring three in the process. Perdomo was in on the scoring in the sixth inning as well, scoring the first of three 'Hawks runs in that frame. Jesse Wierzbicki was three-for-five with a double and scored a run; Tyler Heineman went two-for-three with a double, walk and RBI; and Joe Sclafani tripled, walked and scored a run.

Tri-City over Jamestown 11-5
Evan Grills allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in five innings to get his fifth win of the season. Charles Basford and Kevin Comer each allowed a run across in their outings. Andrew Walter pitched a scoreless ninth. The 'Cats put up a three-spot in the first on a Conrad Gregor RBI single and a Mike Martinez two-run home run and three more in the second as Adam Nelubowich (2x4 2B 2R) scored on a wild pitch and Tyler White (2x5) singled in a pair. That would be all the runs the 'Cats needed, but they went on to score two more in the fifth on RBI singles from Ronnie Mitchell (2x3 BB) and Jake Rodriguez. The final three scored in the eighth courtesy of two wild pitches and a throwing error. James Ramsay went two-for-three with a double, walk and two runs scored.

Kingsport over Greeneville 7-2
The bad weather and ominous sky before this game seemed to foreshadow the coming events. Austin Chrismon, who had only walked three batters in his prior seven appearances, walked the first two batters of the game. Both of those runners came across in the first and Chrismon allowed another two runs in the fourth, victimizing himself with a wild pitch and two hit batters in the inning. He was followed by a scoreless fifth from Christian Garcia. It was then Jordan Mills' turn. Mills allowed three runs (two via the long ball) on five hits and a walk while striking out two in his four innings of work. The offense only mustered six hits in the game, with Alfredo Gonzalez' fifth inning double. The Astros were 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and ended four innings with men on third. It was not their finest hour, but I'm sure that they will bounce back today when they head to Johnson City.

Player of the Day: If anyone has been paying the slightest attention over the last two years, you will know that I routinely drool over Teoscar Hernandez. His two home run, five RBI night for Quad Cities does nothing to change that. Carlos Perdomo gets honorable mention for his great night in Lancaster.

IF Carlos Perdomo (23)
Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela by the Phillies prior to the 2008 season, Perdomo signed with Houston as a minor league free agent during the off-season. He spent the last two seasons playing for the Phillies Low A affiliate. Perdomo played in five games with the Quad Cities squad, hitting .294/.429/.294 before being sent to Lancaster where he has appeared in four games thus far.

Former Astros with birthdays today ~

1B Chuck Harrison (72)
Harrison was the first major league player to have come out of Texas Tech University. He played for the Astros from 1965 to 1967. Although quite a slugger in the minor leagues where he hit 40 home runs in one season in 1964, he was never able to even come close to that kind of power in the Astrodome. He was traded to Atlanta along with Sonny Jackson in 1967 for Denny Lemaster and Dennis Menke.

RHP Bill Greif (63)
Drafted by Houston in the third round in 1968, Greif only pitched in seven games for the Astros in 1971 before being shipped to San Diego as part of a trade for LHP Dave Roberts. His first major league victory came when he went in to pitch in relief in the 20th inning of a 21 inning affair against the Padres.
