Results for Monday, July 16, 2018

Sacramento 4, Fresno 3

W- Tyler Beede (4-8)
L- Reymin Guduan (3-3)
S- Pierce Johnson (2)

Fresno home runs: None.

The Grizzlies got nipped by a run in the 8th. They were also not very satisfied with home plate umpire Clay Park as their feud was re-ignited.

D.J. Fisher and Nick Tanielu made their displeasure known about Park's strike zone; Park was clearly not receptive to their criticism and tossed them both from the game. Fisher's night ended in the 3rd and Tanielu joined him in the 6th. Rogelio Armenteros was also not pleased and let Park know about it in a more subtle fashion.

Armenteros turned in a bare minimum quality start, allowing nine hits and striking otu six. Reymin Guduan allowed the go-ahead run on four hits and struck out one in 1.2 innings, and Riley Ferrell retired all four Rivercats he faced, striking out two.

All three Fresno runs came in the 4th as J.D. Davis smacked a two-run double; he came around to score on a Tony Nuñez single. Nuñez went 3-4 with a stolen base (7); Jamie Ritchie finished 2-4 with a double and scored a run on Davis' two-bagger.

Josh James takes on Daniel Camarena in game two of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Frisco 5, Corpus Christi 3

W- Justin Topa (1-2)
L- Akeem Bostick (1-3)
S- Cole Wiper (1)

CC home runs: None.

A three-run homer from Destin Hood in the 6th condemned the Hooks to a defeat on Monday night.

Corpus got on the board in the first as Andy Piñeda and Chas McCormick both scored on wild pitches. Piñeda scored again in the 8th when Carmen Benedetti drew a bases-loaded walk.

Piñeda and McCormick both finished with two hits and a stolen base on the night. For Piñeda, that is is his first theft of the season, while McCormick now has 13 on the year.

Akeem Bostick went six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits (three-run homer), walked three, and struck out four. Alex Winkelman allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out five over three scoreless innings.

Jorge Alcala will get the nod for game three. He'll face Ariel Jurado at 7:05.

Winston-Salem 12, Buies Creek 10 in 10 innings

W- Daniel Gonzalez (1-0)
L- Colin McKee (1-1, 4-2 season)

BC home runs: Osvaldo Duarte (7, solo in 5th)

The Carolina Stros saw an 8-2 lead vanish and they eventually walked off with the loss after the Dash hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 10th.

Jake Meyers and Osvaldo Duarte had big nights at the plate for Buies Creek as they, along with Bryan de la Cruz, finished with three hits in the contest. Meyers doubled to lead off the game and Duarte opened the scoring by bringing him in with a single. Meyers drove in a run with a sac fly in the 2nd inning. The Carolina Stros scored twice in the 4th as Chuckie Robinson hit an RBI single and Meyers added an RBI double to his ledger.

Duarte led off the 5th with a homer and then Jake Adams smacked a two-run double in the 7th. An error on the play allowed Adams to advance to third and he came home on Robinson's second RBI base hit of the evening. J.J. Matijevic hit a two-run single in the first extra frame that briefly gave Buies Creek the lead. Adams and Robinson had two hits apiece in this game.

Abdiel Saldaña went 4.1 innings and allowed two runs, both of which were inherited runners that were charged to him. He also allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out four. Jesús Balaguer got the final two outs of the 5th and he technically turned in a scoreless outing, but Saldaña's two baserunners scored on his watch. Balaguer allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out one. Patrick Sandoval and Colin McKee had to bear the brunt of the Winston-Salem assault in this one...

Buies Creek has Tuesday off as they head back to Campbell. The Salem Red Sox are in town for three starting Wednesday.

Bowling Green 6, Quad Cities 5

W- Orlando Romero (3-0)
L- Tanner Duncan (2-2)

QC home runs: Chandler Taylor (3, solo in 6th)

Both teams scored in three separate innings; the difference was the Hot Rods scoring two runs in three innings, while Quad Cities scored two runs in two separate innings and only one run in another. The Banditos pitchers were all over the place as they issued ten walks on the day.

Chad Donato and Enoli Paredes both pitched three innings on the afternoon. Donato hit his first speed bump of the year as he allowed four runs (two inherited runners charged to him) on four hits, walked five, and struck out five. Paredes didn't allow a hit, but he walked three, struck out five, and allowed two of the three runners he inherited from Donato to score. Tanner Duncan allowed two of everything in his two innings. He also struck out... two.

Marty Costes doubled to lead off the 2nd and scored the first run of the day on an error that also allowed David Hensley to reach. Hensley smacked a two-run double in the 4th. Chandler Taylor led off the 6th with a homer and Mike Papierski added an RBI single later in the frame. Seth Beer finished 2-4 with a double and scored a run.

Quad Cities has Tuesday off as they make their way back home. They'll start a three-game series with the South Bend Cubs on Wednesday.

Tri-City 2, State College 1

W- Nivaldo Rodriguez (1-1)
L- Kevin Hamann (0-1)
S- Tim Hardy (3)

TC home runs: None.

The ValleyCats are heading out of Penn State with a sweep thanks to a run in the 9th that broke a 1-1 tie.

Carlos Hiraldo and Nivaldo Rodriguez both threw four innings for Tri-City; Hiraldo allowed the Spikes' only run on four hits, walked one, and struck out three. Nivaldo turned in a scoreless outing, allowing three hits and striking out two. Tim Hardy worked around a couple of walks in the 9th to close it out, striking out two.

Ramiro Rodriguez walked to lead off the 5th and advanced to third thanks to an errant pickoff attempt. Carlos Machado brought him in with a sac fly. Michael Wielansky singled with one out in the 9th and he wound up scoring the winning run on a base hit from Oscar Campos. Tri-City did not record an extra-base hit in this game.

The ValleyCats are back in the Capital District and they will start a three-game series with the Brooklyn Cyclones at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 3, GCL Marlins 2 in 10 innings

W- Fredy Medina (1-0)
L- Cason Sherrod (1-2)

GCL home runs: Ronaldo Urdaneta (1, 2-run in 8th)

Ronaldo Urdaneta launched a game-tying two-run homer in the 8th and the Palm Beach Stros walked off with the win in the first extra frame. Hector Martinez started the 10th in scoring position and scored the winning run when Cason Sherrod went full aggy (apologies to any Aggies reading this). Juan Ramirez laid down a sacrifice bunt and Sherrod threw the ball away after fielding it, which allowed Martinez to come home.

Matt Ramsey allowed a double in the 1st which ended up becoming an unearned run due to an error. Ramsey also struck out one in his two innings. Jose Bravo allowed two hits and struck out one over three scoreless innings of work. Javier Navas allowed a run on a sac fly that turned into an inning-ending double play, a single, and walked one in the 6th. Fredy Medina allowed a hit, walked two, and struck out six in four scoreless innings.

DSL Astros 2, DSL Red Sox1 1 in 7 innings

W- Ricardo León (2-1)
L- Miguel Suero (2-1)
S- Diosmerky Taveras (2)

DSL home runs: None.

This game was called with one out in the top of the 8th due to rain.

Abraham Castillo hit a two-run single in the 1st inning for the Academy. Jairo Lopez allowed three hits and struck out one over four scoreless innings. Ricardo León didn't allow a hit and also struck out two in his 2.2 innings, but he allowed a run and also issued five walks. Ronny Garcia got the final out of the 6th. Diosmerky Taveras got the first out of the 7th and walked the bases loaded before play was halted.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Sunday, July 8, 2018

Fresno is off until Thursday

The 2018 Triple-A All-Star Game, which pits the Pacific Coast League against the International League, will take place on Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio. J.D. Davis, A.J. Reed, Garrett Stubbs, and Grizzlies pitching Coach Dyar Miller will represent Fresno in the Pacific Coast League delegation.

Corpus Christi 9, Northwest Arkansas 2

W- Ryan Hartman (7-2)
L- Foster Griffin (3-11)
S- Cionel Perez (1)

CC home runs: Alex De Goti (9, solo in 6th)

This game was delayed because of this:
Yeah, bees could pose a problem. After a 27-minute delay, the bees were extracted from what looks like the first base side dugout without incident.

Ryan Hartman was on the hook for a loss until Abraham Toro saved him from this fate by clearing the bases with a double to put Corpus in the lead. Hartman allowed two runs on five hits (solo homer) and struck out seven in his five innings of work. Cionel Perez shut it down in the last four innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight.

Corpus fell behind 2-0 and then finished the game on a 9-0 run that started with Toro's bases-clearing double in the 5th inning that put them on the board and in the lead. Alex De Goti whacked a solo homer in the 6th. Stephen Wrenn reached on an error to start the 7th and then stole second. He moved to third on Josh Rojas' base hit and scored on a Randy César single. Toro smacked an RBI double to bring Rojas in; César got thrown out at the plate. The Hooks tacked on three more in the 8th as Aníbal Sierra scored on an error while Wrenn was stealing second. Chas McCormick, who came on in the top half of the 8th as a defensive sub, added an RBI single, and Ryne Birk drove in the last run of the night in painful fashion as he got plunked with the bases loaded.

Toro finished 2-2 and drew three walks to reach in all five of his plate appearances. Birk was the only Hooks position player to go hitless but he still recorded an RBI. Wrenn stole two bases (26) and scored three runs. Rojas and Sierra scored two runs apiece, and De Goti has a new career high in home runs.

Akeem Bostick will take on Arnaldo Hernandez in the series finale. First pitch is at 7:05.

Buies Creek 8, Myrtle Beach 7 in 10 innings

W- Yohan Ramirez (1-0, 6-7 season)
L- Casey Bloomquist (2-3)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros took the series finale in thrilling fashion and ended up taking four of five from the Pelicans. Buies Creek scored a run in the 8th to tie the game to finally claw back from an early 3-0 hole. It looked as if the comeback would end up in vain as Myrtle Beach scored a couple in the first extra frame to re-take the lead, but the Carolina Stros just kept at it.

Cristian Javier went three innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits, walked two, and struck out three. Gabriel Valdez was the first man out of the bullpen and went 3.1 innings, allowing two runs (one inherited runner charged to him), on four hits (solo homer), walked one, and struck out two. Colin McKee was next and he technically did have a scoreless outing, although he allowed one of the runners he inherited from Valdez to score. In 1.2 innings, McKee allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out two. Yohan Ramirez allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, walked one, and fanned three. Javier became the second pitcher in the system to reach the 100-strikeout mark for the season after Josh James.

Ronnie Dawson ripped a two-run double in the 4th to put Buies Creek on the board. He then stole third and scored on a Bryan de la Cruz single. Myrtle Beach got a run in the top of the 5th to go back in front but the Carolina Stros kept pace as Corey Julks smacked an RBI double in the bottom half. Julks walked to lead off the 8th. He then stole second and scored the tying run on a double from Osvaldo Duarte. Buies Creek won it with three in the 10th without making an out.

Chuckie Robinson started the inning in scoring position and came home on a base hit from Jonathan Arauz, who moved to second on a wild pitch. Julks joined him on the bases by drawing a walk, and Jake Meyers sent everyone home happy with a two-run double to win it. Arauz (2B, RBI, 2 R), Julks (2B, RBI, 2 R, 2 SB), and Dawson (2B, 2 RBI, R) all finished with two hits on the afternoon. Julks, Meyers, and Dawson also took part in some petty larceny on the bases. Julks swiped two; he's got ten with Buies Creek and 24 on the year. Dawson now has 24 as well, and Meyers' first stolen base in the Carolina League gives him 14 on the season.

The Down East Wood Ducks will be Buies Creeks' guests this week as the latest iteration of the Lone Star Series in North Carolina kicks off on Monday at 6:00 Eastern

Quad Cities 5, Burlington 0

W- Leovanny Rodriguez (4-1)
L- Jose Soriano (0-3)
S- Brendan Feldmann (4, 5 season)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos fulfilled two of the three true outcomes of baseball with 12 walks and 15 strikeouts. They did not hit a home run, however. They also went 1-17 with runners in scoring position and left 17 men on base. They still got the win behind fine outings on the mound from Leovanny Rodriguez and Brendan Feldmann. In the end, it doesn't really matter how a team arrives at a win as long as they get the win.

For the third straight game, a Quad Cities starter recorded a new career high in strikeouts. This time, it was Leovanny's turn to accomplish this feat as he allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out ten over 5.2 shutout innings. For Leovanny, this game marked the first time in his career that he recorded double-digit strikeouts. Brendan Feldmann completed the shutout by allowing a couple of hits, walking one, and striking out four in 3.1 innings of work.

Quad Cities had the bases loaded with one out in the 1st... and came up empty. However... Seth Beer was able to open up the scoring with an RBI single in the 2nd, an inning in which they loaded the bases once again. But... all they could get out of that situation was one run, which came when Marty Costes got plunked, allowing Mike Papierski to score. They loaded the bases yet again in the third inning and got one more run out of it when Chandler Taylor scored on an Alfredo Angarita groundout.

The Banditos loaded the bases for a fourth time in the 5th inning and got one run out of that situation as Costes drew a walk to bring Papierski in. David Hensley drew a walk with one out in the 8th and scored the final run of the night on a Jonathan Lacroix triple. Lacroix and Beer both finished with three hits apiece on the night. Papierski and Miguelangel Sierra both walked three times. Costes drove in two runs without recording an official at-bat; he walked twice and got plunked twice in his four trips to the plate.

The Banditos and the Bees will wrap up this series tonight at 6:35 as Jairo Solís faces Denny Brady.

Tri-City 7, Aberdeen 3

W- Mark Moclair (1-2)
L- Hector Guance (1-4)

TC home runs: Enmanuel Valdez (4, 2-run in 3rd), Ramiro Rodriguez (1, solo in 3rd)

The ValleyCats broke this one open with a four-run third, aided by a couple of home runs.

Gilberto Celestino singled to lead off the 3rd inning and then stole second. Enmanuel Valdez followed by smacking a two-run homer to open the scoring. Austin Dennis kept things moving by drawing a walk, stealing second, and advancing to third on a wild pitch. He wound up scoring on a sac fly from Juan Piñeda. One batter later, Ramiro Rodriguez launched his first home run of the season, a solo shot that gave Tri-City a 4-0 lead. The ValleyCats added three more in the 8th when Celestino drew a bases-loaded walk and a botched force out attempt allowed Oscar Campos and Trey Dawson to score. Celestino went 3-4 with a couple of stolen bases, giving him 12 on the year. The ValleyCats went 5-6 on stolen base attempts in this game. Valdez finished 2-5.

Jose Luis Hernandez continued his rehab by allowing a run on five hits and striking out two in 3.2 innings. Mark Moclair was the first man out of the Tri-City bullpen and threw 2.1 perfect innings, striking out six of the seven Ironbirds he faced. Luis de Paula tagged in for two scoreless innings, walking two and striking out two. Aberdeen spoiled the shutout with a two-run homer off Hansel Paulino in the 9th. Paulino allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out the side.

The ValleyCats will be looking for a sweep first thing in the morning. First pitch is at 11:00 AM Eastern.

GCL Astros 3, GCL Mets 0

W- Elián Rodriguez (1-1)
L- Michel Otanez (0-3)
S- Julio Robaina (1)

GCL home runs: None.

Both teams recorded four hits on the afternoon, but the Astros scored all the runs.

Edgardo Sandoval, Elián Rodriguez, and Julio Robaina pitched three innings apiece and kept the Mets off the board. Sandoval allowed three hits and fanned five, Rodriguez allowed a hit, walked two, and struck out one, and Robaina walked two and struck out two to complete the shutout.

Ronaldo Urdaneta reached on an error in the opening inning and after stealing second, he scored on a single from Nerio Rodriguez. Urdaneta scored two of the Palm Beach Stros' three runs on Sunday; he scored again on a Deury Carrasco single. Carrasco wound up advancing on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a single from Nathan Perry.

Astros Minor League Recaps

Results for Wednesday, July 4, 2018

The Astros' affiliates did battle with the A's affiliates down in the lower levels of the farm on this Fourth of July. How did they fare?

Fresno 5, Las Vegas 0

W- Mike Hauschild (7-6)
L- Drew Gagnon (1-4)

Fresno home runs: Taylor Jones (2, 14 season; 2-run in 8th)

Mike Hauschild was excellent as the Grizzlies kept their opponents off the board for the second straight night.

Hauschild allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out seven over eight shutout frames and Kent Emanuel worked around a walk to complete the shutout, striking out one.

Garrett Stubbs tripled with one out in the 3rd and scored on a Nick Tanielu single. J.D. Davis drove in another run with a base hit in the 5th. Tanielu reached on an error with one out in the 7th and scored on a triple from Myles Straw and Taylor Jones capped off the evening with a two-run homer in the 8th inning. Tucker, Tanielu, and Jon Kemmer all finished with two hits in the contest.

Trent Thornton will take on Kevin McGowan in game two of this series. First pitch is at 7:05 Pacific.

Arkansas 5, Corpus Christi 2

W- Nathan Bannister (5-5)
L- Jorge Alcala (1-4, 2-6 season)
S- Matt Festa (11)

CC home runs: None.

The Hooks scored twice in the 8th to cut the deficit to one run, but the Travs scored twice in the 9th to seal the deal.

Chas McCormick walked to start the 8th and scored Corpus Christi's first run on a Randy César groundout. Stephen Wrenn finished 2-4 and added an RBI single later in the inning.

Jorge Alcala went 4.2 innings and allowed two runs (one inherited runner charged to him) on seven hits, walked three, and struck out four. Kit Scheetz got the last out of the 5th, but before he did so, he allowed a hit and issued a walk. Akeem Bostick threw the last four innings and allowed three runs on four hits (two-run homer), walked two, and struck out four.

Forrest Whitley will try to get himself back on track in game two of this series. He'll face Johendi Jiminian at 7:05.

Buies Creek 4, Myrtle Beach 3

W- Gabriel Valdez (4-3)
L- Casey Bloomquist (2-2)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros stunned the Pelicans with a run in the 8th and three more in the 9th to walk off with the victory.

Carson LaRue pitched well but was on the verge of having to take the loss. Fortunately, the offense got him out of dodge. LaRue went seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits, walked one, and struck out one. Gabriel Valdez allowed a run on a groundout, walked one, and struck out two in two innings.

Jake Meyers and Corey Julks got on with one-out base hits. Meyers got to third when Abraham Toro flew out and scored on a single from Ronnie Dawson. The real fun started in the 9th, when Buies Creek loaded the bases before they made an out.

Osvaldo Duarte walked and moved to third on a Bryan de la Cruz single. Chuckie Robinson drew a walk to load the bases and Orlando Marquez walked Duarte in. Jonathan Arauz grounded into a force out but the bases remained loaded for Meyers, who tied the game with a sac fly. Julks won it with a base hit. He and Meyers finished with two hits apiece.

Buies Creek and Myrtle Beach continues their series at 6:00 Eastern.

Beloit 6, Quad Cities 5

W- Jared Poché (4-6)
L- Humberto Castellanos (1-1)
S- Jesús Zambrano (3)

QC home runs: Jonathan Lacroix (2, 3-run in 1st)

The Banditos got off to a quick start, but the Snappers hit back for five runs in the 7th to take control.

All four Quad Cities runs in the opening inning came with two outs. Miguelangel Sierra kept the 1st inning alive with a triple and scored the first run of the evening on a single from Colton Shaver. Marty Costes got plunked, and one batter later, Jonathan Lacroix whacked a home run. After the Snappers went off in the top of the 7th, Seth Beer managed to get a run back with an RBI single in the bottom half. Beer went 2-3.

Enoli Paredes allowed a run on two hits, walked one, and struck out five in six innings of work. Humberto Castellanos got knocked around in the 7th... I'll leave it at that. Tanner Duncan allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out one over 2.1 scoreless innings.

This series now shifts to Quad Cities for the final two games. First pitch is at 6:35.

Vermont 6, Tri-City 1

W- Slater Lee (2-1)
L- Luis de Paula (0-3)

TC home runs: Gilberto Celestino (1, solo in 4th)

The Lake Monsters went nuts in the 9th in order to break a 1-1 tie.

Gilberto Celestino smacked a homer to lead off the 4th which accounted for the lone Tri-City run and was also the ValleyCats' only extra-base hit of the game. Celestino also stole a base, his 9th of the year.

J.B. Bukauskas walked one and struck out one over two scoreless innings as he tries to get back to speed. Austin Hansen also threw two scoreless innings; he allowed a hit, walked two, and struck out three. Cody Deason worked around a walk to throw a scoreless 5th. Hansel Paulino threw three innings and the one hit he allowed was a homer that tied the game at 1. Paulino struck out four. Luis de Paula bore the brunt of the Lake Monsters' assault in the 9th and I don't think there's any need for me to elaborate any further.

Game five (well, game two in Tri-City) of this series starts at 7:00 Eastern.

GCL Astros 3, GCL Cardinals 1

W- Layne Henderson (1-0)
L- Perry DellaValle (0-1)
S- Jervic Chavez (1)

GCL home runs: None.

The Palm Beach Stros went 4-19 with runners in scoring position and had 13 hits. They had plenty of traffic but could only manage to push three runs across. However, they also held the Cardinals to one run on the afternoon.

Nerio Rodriguez ripped a double to start the 2nd inning and scored the first run of the day on a single from Andrés Santana. Deury Carrasco also doubled to lead off an inning; he smacked a ground-rule double to start the 3rd and scored on a single from Freudis Nova, who tripled to start the 9th and scored on a base hit from Nerio. Nova, Nerio, and Juan Ramirez had three hits on the afternoon, while Hector Martinez finished 2-5 with a double and a stolen base (2).

Miguel Figueroa and Layne Henderson started it off with three scoreless innings apiece. Figueroa struck out two in a perfect outing while Henderson allowed two hits and struck out four. Christian Mejias allowed a hit and struck out three in two scoreless innings, and the Cardinals spoiled the shutout with a run off a groundout against Jervic Chavez in the 9th. Chavez allowed a single, walked one, and struck out one.

DSL Astros 3, DSL Dodgers Robinson 1

W- Flaer Gonzalez (1-1)
L- Juan Gonzalez (1-2)
S- Valente Bellozo (1)

DSL home runs: None.

A big hit early set the tone for the Dominican Stros.

Junior Marte opened the scoring with a two-run double in the 2nd, although he got thrown out at third to end the inning. Franklin Pinto hit a two-out double in the 3rd and scored on a single from Carlos Hurtado. Marte finished 2-3 on the afternoon.

Fabricio Reina went three innings and allowed an unearned run on two hits, walked four, and struck out two. Flaer Gonzalez tagged in to throw two scoreless, allowing a hit, walking one, and striking out one. Valente Bellozo pitched the final four innings to earn the save, allowing a hit, walking two, and striking out four.

The Grizzlies will start a three-game series in New Orleans tonight at 7:00. Brock Dykxhoorn will start the opener against Pablo Lopez.

This roadtrip apparently hasn't gotten off to a great start.

San Antonio 5, Corpus Christi 1

W- Jerry Keel (5-2)
L- Akeem Bostick (0-2)

CC home runs: Alex De Goti (8, solo in 7th)

Unfortunately, the Hooks had to settle for the split in this series. They are two games behind the Missions and their elimination number for the first half now stands at five.

Alex De Goti smacked a solo homer in the 7th which represented the only Corpus Christi run of the night. Jamie Ritchie went 2-4 with a double and Randy César extended his hitting streak in his last plate appearance once again. His single in the 9th brings his streak to 34 games.

Akeem Bostick went three innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, walked one, and struck out two. Alex Winkelman allowed a run on a single, walked two, and struck out one in the 4th. Framber Valdez pitched the last five innings and allowed a run on three hits, walked one, and struck out ten. It's the second time that Framber has recorded double-digit strikeouts in a game; he fanned 11 on June 28 last year when he was with Buies Creek.

Forrest Whitley will start the first of a four-game series in Midland. First pitch is at 6:30.

Game 1: Carolina 9, Buies Creek 4

W- Marcos Diplán (3-2)
L- Brett Adcock (3-3)

BC home runs: None.

Both teams scored in three different innings in the first game. Unfortunately, the Mudcats put up crooked numbers in all three of the innings in which they scored.

J.J. Matijevic led off the bottom of the 1st with a single and scored the first run of the afternoon session on a wild pitch that was also called ball four to Jake Adams. Kristian Trompiz hit a one-out single in the 2nd. He moved to second on a Chuckie Robinson groundout and scored thanks to two wild pitches. Abraham Toro smacked a two-run triple in the 5th inning.

Brett Adcock went four innings and allowed six runs (three earned) on five hits, walked three, and struck out three. Jesús Balaguer was the first man out of the Buies Creek bullpen and the three runs he allowed came on a homer hit by Cooper Hummel in the 5th. He allowed two other hits, walked three, and struck out five. Robert Corniel struck out one in a 1-2-3 7th inning.

Game 2: Buies Creek 2, Carolina 1

W- Brandon Bailey (2-6)
L- Conor Harber (1-3)
S- Ronel Blanco (3)

BC home runs: None.

The Carolina Stros earned the split by scoring in more innings than the Mudcats did in the evening session.

Osvaldo Duarte opened the scoring in game two with an RBI single in the 3rd inning. Abraham Toro scored when Kristian Trompiz grounded into a force out in the 6th.

Brandon Bailey allowed two hits, walked three, and struck out five over 5.1 shutout innings. Ronel Blanco pitched the last 1.2 innings and allowed an unearned run on a sac fly, a single, walked one, and struck out three.

Buies Creek and Carolina will wrap up this series at 6:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 4, Clinton 0

W- Enoli Paredes (1-3)
L- Nick Wells (4-4)
S- Yohan Ramirez (1)

QC home runs: None.

The Banditos locked the LumberKings down in game one of a new series.

Dean Deetz made his season debut, pitching a scoreless 1st. He allowed a double and walked two in the inning, but he picked a man off first base, another man got caught stealing third, and the last out came via strikeout. Enoli Paredes came on for five innings and allowed a hit, walked one, and struck out seven. Yohan Ramirez completed the shutout, allowing two hits, walking one, and striking out six over the last three innings.

Bryan de la Cruz opened the scoring with a two-run single in the 1st. He added another RBI single to his ledger in the 6th and scored the final run of the evening on a single from Adrian Tovalin in the 8th. De La Cruz finished 3-4, while Tovalin and Corey Julks both went 2-4. Jake Meyers went 3-4 with a couple of doubles and scored twice.

Leovanny Rodriguez will start game two of this series. He'll take on Clay Chandler at 6:35.

DSL Astros 2, DSL Red Sox1 1

W- Jose Antonio Hernandez (1-1)
L- Yoelvis Guedez (0-1)
S- Flaer Gonzalez (1)

DSL home runs: None.

The Academy scored in more innings than the Red Sox did, so they won.

Yefri Carrillo tripled to lead off the 5th and scored on a single from Jose Alvarez. Rolando Espinosa walked with two outs in the 7th and scored what turned out to be the winning run on a single from Abraham Castillo. Carrillo and Alvarez both finished with two hits on the day, while Jeury Castillo went 3-3.

Ernesto Jaquez allowed a run on two hits, walked two, and struck out six in 3.2 innings. Jose Antonio Hernandez tagged in for 4.1 scoreless, allowing a hit, walking one, and striking out three. Flaer Gonzalez struck out two in a 1-2-3 9th to earn a save.

Happy Dominican Summer League Opening Day!

Fresno 5, Albuquerque 2

W- Trent Thornton (4-3)
L- Sam Howard (3-4)
S- James Hoyt (4)

Fresno home runs: Tyler White 2 (10; solo in 1st, solo in 8th), Kyle Tucker (8, 2-run in 1st)

The Grizzlies got off to a quick start as they launched two homers in the opening frame.

Kyle Tucker opened things up with a two-run blast and Tyler White made it back-to-back with his first solo shot of the evening. Eduardo de Oleo led off the 7th with a double and scored on an Alejandro Garcia triple. White drove himself in with his second solo homer in the 8th inning. He and Jack Mayfield both finished 2-4.

Trent Thornton went six innings and allowed a run on four hits and struck out six. Reymin Guduan, Brendan McCurry, and James Hoyt all pitched an inning. Guduan recorded a strikeout in a 1-2-3 7th. McCurry allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out one in the 8th and Hoyt struck out one in a 1-2-3 9th to get the save.

Rogelio Armenteros will start the series finale. He'll face Yency Almonte at 1:35 Mountain.

Corpus Christi 3, Tulsa 2

W- Kit Scheetz (1-0)
L- Dylan Baker (3-3)
S- Riley Ferrell (4)

CC home runs: Alex De Goti (3, 2-run in 9th)

The Hooks stole the win by stunning the Drillers with three runs in the top of the 9th.

Randy César extended his hitting streak to 25 games by leading off the 9th with a single. Ryne Birk followed with a single and Stephen Wrenn moved them both over with a sacrifice bunt. César scored Corpus Christi's first run of the night on a Jamie Ritchie groundout that put them down to their final out. Alex De Goti didn't care though because he whacked a home run that put the Hooks in front and it turned out to be the difference. De Goti's homer was the Hooks' lone extra-base hit on the night.

Alex Winkelman allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, walked two, and struck out four. Kit Scheetz came on for his Texas League debut and his first task was to get Winkleman out of a bases-loaded, one out jam, which he successfully did without incurring any further damage. Scheetz wound up striking out two over 3.2 perfect innings. Riley Ferrell struck out one in a 1-2-3 9th to get the save.

Corpus and Tulsa will wrap up this series at 1:05. Ryan Hartman will take on Justin DeFratus.

Potomac 8, Buies Creek 2

W- Wil Crowe (7-0)
L- Hector Perez (1-2)

BC home runs: None.

Walks kill.

Luis Payano's two-run double in the 4th was Buies Creek's only scoring play.

Four Buies Creek pitchers issued 15 walks in nine innings. That might have had something to do with how this game shaped out. I will decline to elaborate further. Jesús Balaguer was the only pitcher who did not allow a run; he walked one and struck out two in the 9th.

Gabriel Valdez will take on Joan Baez (not the singer) in the series finale. First pitch is at 2:00 Eastern.

Quad Cities 10, Beloit 9 in 10 innings

W- Humberto Castellanos (1-0)
L- Josh Reagan (0-3)

QC home runs: Jake Adams (8, 2-run in 7th)

The Snappers tied the game in the 9th and took the lead in the 10th.... only to watch the Banditos walk off with the victory.

Leovanny Rodriguez has been excellent since he joined the Quad Cities roster, but he got roughed up for the first time this season as he allowed seven runs on ten hits (solo and three-run homers), walked three, and struck out two. Willy Collado restored order in his season debut as he allowed a run on three hits, walked one, and struck out two in four innings. Humberto Castellanos allowed the leadoff runner to score on a single and struck out one in the 10th.

Jake Meyers doubled to lead off the bottom of the 1st. He proceeded to steal third and scored the Banditos' first run on the errant throw down. Miguelangel Sierra and Mike Papierski hit RBI singles in the 3rd and the 4th, respectively. Meyers led off the 7th with a single. He then stole second and scored on a Jonathan Arauz single. Bryan de la Cruz and Sierra went down to put the rally in jeopardy, but Jake Adams delivered another blow with a two-run home run. De La Cruz put Quad Cities in front with a two-run single in the 8th.

Roman Garcia led off the 10th in scoring position. Papierski grounded out, but Adrian Tovalin drew a walk. Corey Julks was summoned to pinch-hit and he sent everyone home happy by ripping a two-run double to win it for Quad Cities. Meyers and Arauz both finished with three hits on the evening and Papierski went 2-4.

César Rosado will start the series finale. He'll face Xavier Altamirano at 1:15.

DSL Royals1 3, DSL Astros 1

W- Daury Cabrera (1-0)
L- Wender Oberto (0-1)
S- Cruz Noriega (1)

DSL home runs: None.

The Academy could only rue their missed opportunities as they went 0-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base.

Heitor Tokar had an impressive pro debut as he allowed just one man to reach via a walk and struck out one in his four innings of work. The Royals got to Wender Oberto, though. Oberto allowed three runs on five hits, walked four, and struck out one in two innings. Ronny Garcia struck out one in a 1-2-3 7th, and Flaer Gonzalez allowed a hit and struck out three over two scoreless innings.

Enmanuel Morillo led off the 5th with a single. He then advanced to second on a balk, to third on an errant pickoff throw, and then scored the DSL team's first run of the season on a wild pitch. Carlos Hurtado's double in the 8th was their only extra-base hit of the day.

Sunday is a league-wide off day in the Dominican. The Academy will travel to the Royals complex to play them again on Monday.

Astros May 2018 MiLB Standouts

With the calendar turning from May to June, the minor league standings find all four of the active Astros minor league affiliates in either first or second place in their respective divisions with the second place teams lagging by only one game (Corpus Christi) and a half game (Quad Cities). Quad Cities was particularly impressive, having overcome a really rough start to their season. Here are a few of the players who have helped contribute to the success of those teams in May. I have noted a few of the more outstanding accomplishments in red.

Note: If a player played at multiple levels during the month of May, he is listed under his current level, but his stats are cumulative.

Arguably, Corey Julks had one of the more dramatic turnarounds at the plate between April and May. He hit only .198/.261/.321 in 21 games in April. (Julks is from the Houston area and was drafted out of the University of Houston so I may or may not be rooting for him just a little bit harder than some.)

Corey Julks struck out, but Meyers came through with an RBI single and Jonathan Arauz capped off the evening with a two-run single.

Meyers finished 3-5 on the night. Bohanek went 0-2, but he drew a couple of walks and scored twice.

Patrick Sandoval will take on Kirk McCarty in the series finale. First pitch is at 6:35.
