MLB Draft Deep Dive: Kansas City Royals

In order to satisfy my innate curiosity as it pertains to the MLB Draft, I have taken a comprehensive look at the 2018 draft for each of the 30 MLB organizations. But I also wanted to get an idea of what each of the teams had done for the 20 years prior so that is included as a prelude to the 2018 information. I'll be looking first at each team in each division, starting with the National League East, and then I'll follow up with a an overall look at both the historical draft results to date and the early 2018 results.

My goal is to get a better idea of the big picture as to how the systems compare in terms of draft results, as well as how a good or bad draft class affects a system, the overall impact of the draft on the baseball talent pool and the circuitous ways in which draft picks are used to bolster a system for which they may never even play. This project is just a first step. I intend to expand on this information over time (including a later revisit of the 2018 class and the addition of the 2019 class next offseason) and I will share my findings as I do so.

The highest WAR to date, both total and individual, is from 2002. The five other players in this group who managed to make it to the MLB combined for a negative 2.1 WAR so this Draft class really belongs to RHP Zach Greinke (1st round, 65.7 WAR). His seven seasons for the Royals (2004 through 2010) were worth 26.3 WAR, one All-Star appearance and an American League Cy Young award. Greinke has gone on to collect four additional All-Star nods, five Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger since being traded away from the Royals. In December 2010, he was traded (along with Yuniesky Betancourt) to Milwaukee for four players, including OF Lorenzo Cain (7 seasons for KC, 25.1 WAR) and SS Alcides Escobar (8 seasons for KC, 9.2 WAR). Greinke is currently with the Diamondbacks.

2018 DRAFT

29 College | 28 Signed | 18 Pitchers | 10 Position Players
5 JC/CC | 2 Signed | 2 Pitchers | 0 Position Players
9 HS/NS | 3 Signed | 0 Pitchers | 3 Position Players

Notable: The Royals received one additional draft pick for Competitive Balance (Round A) and two additional first round picks as compensation for losing OF Lorenzo Cain and 1B Eric Hosmer to free agency. Kansas City signed 19 of their first 20 picks with the first holdout being 15th round Texas HS OF Milan Walla.

PITCHERS
All but two of the 20 pitchers signed (11 RHP, 9 LHP) logged at least some playing time. Five of these pitchers were promoted beyond the Short Season A* level, three to Full Season A and two to Advanced A. Six of them debuted on MLB Pipeline's Top 30 Prospect list for the Royals, four of them as Top 10 prospects.

🔟 Top 10 Prospect

In total, the Kansas City 2018 Draft pitchers combined for a 3.72 ERA and a 1.348 WHIP over 549 innings as compared to the 3.67 ERA and 1.299 WHIP (average of 376.2 innings per affiliate) compiled by the total 2018 Draft class in 2018.

POSITION PLAYERS
All of the 13 position players signed (1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 7 OF, 2 C) logged at least some playing time. Three players were promoted beyond the Short Season A* level, two to Full Season A and one to Advanced A. One player debuted on MLB Pipeline's Top 30 Prospect list for the Royals.

Top Prospects

OF Kyle Isbel (L/R), 3rd round, University of Nevada - Las Vegas, A
64 G | .326/.389/.504/.893 | 26 BB : 60 K | 24 SB : 6 CS | 22 2B / 2 3B / 7 HR

Noteworthy Debut

OF Nathan Eaton (R/R), 21st round, Virginia Military Institute, Rk
66 G | .354/.427/.581/1.008 | 33 BB : 60 K | 19 SB : 5 CS | 20 2B / 12 3B / 5 HR | 53 RBI

With numbers like these, Eaton should certainly have been challenged to a higher level of competition than the rookie level Pioneer League, but his numbers are eye-popping nonetheless. Out of the entire 2018 Draft class, Eaton was tied for most triples.

In total, the Royals 2018 Draft position players combined to hit .282/.364/.412/.776 as compared to .261/.349/.386/.735 batting line compiled by the total 2018 Draft class in 2018.

*Notes on players include the highest level achieved for the 2018 season using the following abbreviations:
Rk = Rookie
SSA = Short Season A
A = Full Season A
A+ = Full Season A Advanced

GENERAL NOTES: Information was obtained from Baseball-Reference and the MLB Draft History site. The occasional discrepancy in historical information was resolved to the best of my ability by delving into the player information available on B-R. On the historical information, the player position in the totals reflects the position at which the player was drafted (and not any subsequent change of position). On the 2018 information, the player position reflects the primary position played in 2018 for all players who were signed and the position at which the player was drafted for those who did not sign. Prospect listings on MLB Pipeline were as of early January and may not reflect any subsequent changes to that site.
